Beautiful Journey.......2005-07-17

I just saw Jennifer Cutting perform with the equally incredible Grace Griffith (who does vocals on the album) and the Ocean Orchestra at a store in Hagerstown, MD outside Washington D.C. Jennifer richly deserves all the awards she has won! I, like all in the audience, was blown away! This is truly a transcendent body of work that transports the listener to a magical place in one's soul. I purchased four copies of this CD as Christmas presents for friends.

I also recommend the groups Connemara and The New St. George, and the solo projects of Grace Griffith who, despite the young onset of Parkinson's Disease, has an otherworldly angelic voice and an inspiringly wonderful spirit. In short, listening to this cd will make you feel so good in so many ways. My love, best wishes and gratitude to all involved in this project.

This composition is a truly magical mystical hero's journey into haunting and healing melodies and lyrics! From the cover art, the liner notes, quotations, and without question the music one is immediately taken with the first sounds of the waves and the siren's voice calling you to discover what is next on this wonderful composition. I love it and am telling everyone I know to buy this CD immediately! Hurrah for you Jennifer for staying the course with your vision. It took composer and keyboardist Jennifer Cutting seven years and several Atlantic crossings to complete her "Ocean" journey, to meld sea and soul, myth and music into a thoroughly absorbing listening experience. It may take the rest of us nearly as long to fully appreciate the achievement.

No mere folksy, salt-water song cycle, "Ocean: Songs for the Night Sea Journey" is an album-length enchantment, orchestrated with great care, imagination and color. Cutting, well known in folk-rock circles for her tenure with the New St. George, wrote or arranged all of the music, drawing from sources as diverse as J.S. Bach, Gustav Holst and fusion guitarist Steve Morse. Among her own compositions is "Forgiveness," a splendid showcase for special guest Maddy Prior's soulful soprano. But the Steeleye Span vet isn't the only singer who leaves a deep impression.. Grace Griffith brings an angelic voice and yearning emotions to several ballads, beginning with the welcome unearthing of an ancient Irish song, "The Gladdest Breeze." Singers Polly Bolton and Lisa Moscatiello also contribute to the album's haunting charms, while Bulgarian vocalist Tatiana Sarbinska and the Washington-based women's ensemble Slaveya create a spellbinding weave all their own on "Neptune Reel / Woman of the House." Surrounding Cutting is a stellar cast of instrumentalists, many of them based in the Washington area, who share her talent for gracefully incorporating traditional and contemporary influences.

In the liner notes to "Ocean," Cutting writes: "May you lose yourself in its changing waters, only to find yourself again, renewed and restored." It's a wish fulfilled.

Absolutely fantastic.......2003-12-23

This album got to be one of the best pop (or whatever you call it) albums of the eighties. It`s packed with great stuff from the upbeat "I can hear your heartbeat" through the mesmerizing and carefree "hey you" to the dark and melancholy "candles". I listened to that album many times in 83 and the years thereafter, and it helped me through a great crisis in my life, especially the wonderful and almost heartbreaking "candles" . Just listen to that intro, magnificent !!

Chris Rea has to be one of the best, virtually unknown (at least in N America), blues/rock musicians at present. Every song on this album is worth listening to, a true rarity these days.

Some Excellent Tracks.......1999-03-17

This album has two of Chris Rea's best tracks, in my opinion. The rocky, slightly sleazy, 'Let It Loose On Me', and the the weird 'Love's Strange Ways'. The rest are standard Chris Rea - melodic, reflective, and atmospheric, and none the worse for that.

If you love keyboards,funk,jazz and technical talent and you're also a maniac of those fantastic 80's this is your record to listen together with others Lorber's masterpiece suh as "Galaxian","It's a fact"and "Wizard Island".

The Fusion At Their Funkiest!.......2004-07-01

'Water Sign' is this groups Arista debut and is the most
groove orientated of thier albums to date!"Toads Place","Tune
88","Right Here" and "Lights Out" all have solid,righteous
rhythms and a delectable sense of groove.In the meantime the
more tame "Rain Dance" is,as it was,more commercialized but no
less inventive.Later on melodic,funky fusion such as this would
have it's teeth knocked out by a radio playlist that had become
very rigid and homogonized-becomming known as smooth jazz.But all that is is very light pop in the end;in 1979 fusion was
fusion and that's what you'll get here!Unfortunately this is
the only available CD statement by the pre-Kenny G Jeff Lorber
Fusion lineup available.It would be nice if the Inner City label
would reissue the bands first two LP's that came before this one so they could be heard because THEY were the absolute hardest-edged music that this band ever made.But for a glimpse into that period when Jeff Lorber was still making genuine
funk/fusion this is the place to go!

It's no Bamboo Forest..........2000-03-17

Granted, Steve Reid is multi-talented and a genius with music, but I guess I was a little disappointed with Water Sign because I put Bamboo on such a high pedistal. I really enjoy Reid's work with the percussion and making you feel like you are in a jungle, but this one won't do that for you. This is good, but not what I was looking for. Water Sign is better than Mysteries though.

Excellent Music from the percussion master.......1998-07-14

This CD by the percussionist for the Rippingtons is wonderful music full of feelings for mother ocean. If you like the Rippington's music, you will love this CD. Many of the members from the Rippingtons play on Steve's CD. He has masterfully mixed the music and it is easy listening over and over again. Don't be fooled thinking this is a percussion album, it is full and rich music with a similar feel to the Rippingtons, but with perhaps a bit more feeling!

I highly recommend this CD and am off to buy his other two.
