This is an excellent compilation of CCR's tunes from the late 60s, early 70s. There's a reason why Credence tunes kept popping up in movies and commercials. It's great music and evocative of the era from which it comes. No need for me to review the individual tunes; anybody with a radio has head most of them. A must-have for any music fan.

The End of the Big Voice?.......2007-04-16

This CD, which is truly fine overall, reminds me of Marilyn Horne's lament that we have probably seen the end of the big voice and it makes me sad. I agree with the reviewer who refers to "microphonies". And more justice could be done to Bjorling's voice with a better transfer. But at some point, music becomes a matter of taste and I prefers singers who have the instrument and the support and the training, whether formal or not, to just let fly and take a chance on making a mistake. Domingo can be wonderful and so can his musicianship but he tends to be so stiff. I have to wonder at the virulence and asperity with which some people go after Pavarotti. It's true that late in his career he made some questionable recordings but the answer to that is simple: don't buy them. At his best, he belongs for all time in the top echelon of tenors. I love this CD and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys great (big) voices.

Highly recommend this CD with these beloved arias of the greatest tenors in opera. I have owned this CD for a couple of years and purchased another for a friend who always requests that I play it ... perfect for listening in the car, dinner, bridge games, relaxation ... just so perfect. You won't be disappointed in this one.

Plesantly surprised..........2006-01-14

I don't remember how I found this CD the other day surfing through the "Amazon" such as it is, but I did. I listened to a few clips provided & on the strength of that, I purchased this CD.

First it is a great buy. A booklet with pictures of each tenor, a small bio, the year recorded and TRANSLATIONS of each aria are provided. This is really nice. It seems more & more that translations are being left out. Being a former opera singer, I may know most of the words, but sometimes it's just nice to read along (sometimes it's just nice to listen too).

Being on the Decca label, there is admittedly quite a few Pavarotti selections. Out of 20 selections, he has 6 of them. But I love Pavarotti, so this is no problem for me. These are all early recordings & his voice is magnificent! Being a singer, I still marvel at his ability to sing "All'armi!" on a high D and still say the 2nd syllable "mi" on such a note! WOW. There is also of course his very sweet, impassioned and lyrical turn as Rodolfo in "La Boheme" as well as the lesser known (although I still have it on casette) "La Favorita" which has a particularly high tessitura.

Also featured are a young Plácido Domingo singing a VERY nice "Flower song/ La fleur que tu m'avais jetée" from Carmen. He usually sounds too pushed for me on the top notes (as one might expect from a Pavarotti fan, I like free top notes) but in this recording he is pretty darn fabulous. He also sings an aria from "Tales of Hoffman/Les Contes d'Hoffman" and I have always felt that he, like Neil Schicoff, were well suited to this role.

Lamentably there are only one selection each from Carreras, Correlli, Monaco, Aragall & Kollo. Especial kudos to the young recording they feature for Aragall. He had a very free and nice high tenor well suited to Verdi. Of course as his career went forward with the natural darkening of his voice and the "heavier" roles, he did start to develop a wobble. But this recording is before that. His top, his phrasing are all beautifully done in his featured aria from "La Traviata."
Mario del Monaco's "E lucevan le stelle" is hauntingly beautiful and has such a wonderful pianissimo in it that it makes you just want to gasp for beauty's sake. I now know every tenor I've heard sing this aria was trying to emulate what he did.

This is a great CD because it does bring together on one CD some of the greatest singers of the 20th/21st century. Bergonzi, di Stefano, Björling, in addition to the previously mentioned artists is quite an impressive collection. I'm sure there's only one of each for Carreras, Aragall (I believe they are formerly EMI/Angel artists) and perhaps some of the others because they are "imported" from another label. There's so much Pavarotti on this CD because he IS a Decca artist.

A highly recommended CD, affordable, not the usually obscure and unpolished artists that are sometimes found on compilations. Plus acutal linear notes and translations. Nicely done, Decca!!!

Absolutely Agree About Corelli.......2005-05-27

Franco Corelli's "Nessun Dorma" is still the best of them all - clear, passionate, and exciting. (And those final two notes...! Gives me chills just to think of it.) I was fortunate enough to see him live in both "Turandot" and "Romeo and Juliet" a year before his retirement, and he was still a Calaf and a Romeo to die for... as, of course, Liu and Juliet did! As it is, I tend to buy compilations depending on how much Corelli they include - though Bjorling is a strong second, and I have happy memories of Domingo. Long live the Golden Age of Operatic Tenors!

Best Beach Boys.......2007-06-04

No need for much analysis here. An excellent Beach Boys compiliation. It's got all of the radio hits, the fun in the summer in the 60s. Maybe that's why "In My Room" and "When I Grow up to Be a Man" aren't here, which is because they're more thoughtful and introspective. Too bad, but what's here is excellent, great ambassador from its era.

Makes You Feel as if You Live by the Ocean.......2007-04-02

This album brings together all the all time favorites from the infamous Beach Boys. The classics like Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl, and Good Vibrations are all included in this CD that is guaranteed to get your blood pumping. Its hard to resist getting up and dancing to these wonderful tracks. If you like the Beach boys, you are sure to love this album. Its got all the right tunes and grooves. It makes you feel as if you live right there, ten feet from the beautiful ocean. I highly recommend this album to any person of any age, its safe for kids, another perk of these amazing tracks.

Every track on this CD contains a beautiful melody, many of them easily recognizable, all of them exuding tranquility. "O mio babbino caro" from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi opens the disc, with Bell delicately accompanied by a harp and spinning the long melody with great sensitivity. Bellini's "Casta diva" from Norma lives up to its reputation as the epitome of bel canto in Bell's hands; his violin sings. The middle movement of Mozart's 21st Piano Concerto takes well to the violin, and Debussy's "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" is played with great warmth and sensuality. It would be easy to turn a recital like this into treacle, but Bell is wise enough to realize that the music is already sweet enough and he plays with great reserve and a minimum of sentimental slides. The light accompaniments always support, with woodwinds prominent but used with grace. This CD, in short, is a beauty: a fine gift, a lovely mood setter. --Robert Levine

I am a Joshua Bell fan, and this album is the one that I enjoy with my dessert, it calms me at the end of the day, and makes me think of my 6 year old granddaughter's visit. She has to have music on during meals at her home. Usually it is some kid stuff, but I do not have anything like she has at home, so I chose to play Joshua Bell during our dinner. When I placed the dessert before her, she looked up at me and said: "This music is so beautiful, I want to play the violin just like that". What more could I say.
He is inspiring, and she is right. This album is beautiful.

That's how I want to play this CD! It's a wonderful line-up of rich, mellow, captivating compositions played with a warmth and vibrancy that is seldom heard. Joshua at his very best. You won't be disappointed.

Non-standard CD format.......2007-04-22

The music on this CD deserves five stars, but the CD itself is a non-standard format that doesn't work on all players. There's a tiny warning on the back of the CD. You won't notice the warning until you discover that the CD doesn't work on your player. My Macintosh computer wouldn't read the non-standard format so there was no way for me to listen in my office or put the music on my iPod.

A friend's PC was able to read the CD and make a copy in standard format that can be read on any player, including my Mac. The story had a happy ending, but I can not comprehend why the publisher chose the oddball CD specification.

The music is excellent and worth the trouble of making a copy, but the publisher really shouldn't make you go to that effort just to listen to a CD that you paid for.

It is an excellent collection of classical music. I would recommend this CD if you have a friend who don't like classical music, since it has the most beautiful overtures and portions of famous artists. If you are a Classic Music Savvy you probably will not be impressed by it, unless you want to play the CD as background music in a friends gathering.

Of all the reasons you'll click the Add to Shopping Cart button next to Baby Einstein's Baby Mozart--and there are many--the best one is that playing this record for babies doesn't feel weird. Instead of subjecting tiny, tender ears to the kind of Mozart that can make adult classical fans wilt when tackled by a maestro who means business, this is Mozart lite, mixed and mastered by a dad, Bill Weisbach, who's clearly hung around for his share of crib-side cooing. The slightly tinny sound of a child's piano sweeps the sting out of Piano Sonata in B Flat's third movement; the first movement of Concerto for Flute and Harp in C floats by, birdlike; variations on "Ah vous dirai-je, Maman" translate to a fancy-sounding (but adorable) "Twinkle, Twinkle"; and Piano Sonata in F's third movement snuggles so deeply into its childlike setting that if you close your eyes, you'll see a pastel parade of animals floating by overhead. Other pieces (more aptly called fragments, since only one track stretches beyond the three-minute mark), like Symphony No. 41's fourth movement, wander into more robust Mozart territory, but it's here the claims about classical music enhancing young kids' abstract reasoning skills and spatial intelligence crystallize. Although the selection of music was good, I was disappointed at the synthesized sounds of the music. I have heard much of the "Mozart Effect" for stimulating learning in young minds, but why market it this way? Just turn on your radio to your local classical music station and give your child the benefit of the real thing without having to put more money in Disney's pockets.

I bought this CD with a gift card, because I wanted some soothing music for my daughter's naptime. In looking at the titles of the pieces, I didn't recognize very many, but in listening to the CD I found that I recognize much of the music. I was pleased at how calming it was and found myself humming various pieces throughout the day.

I would recommend this CD, and plan to purchase other Baby Einstein music!

My musical tastes are quite eclectic to say the least. I move from Bach to Rock and all places in between as long as its quality. However, whenever I listen to "back 2 good", I feel like I am actually transported into the body of a person who has deep pain and sorrow. This song continues to have an effect on me over 10 years later from the first time I heard it. Most of the other songs are great for the unusual mix of depth and pop appeal. This album is highly recommended!

MB20 Is Someone Like You.......2006-10-03

Southern rock band: Matchbox 20 made their Mainstream debut with YOURSELF OR SOMEONE LIKE YOU. The album was released in late 1996, and it was a major breakthrough in the sound of popular rock. Vocalist Rob Thomas fronted the rhythm section with gritty and yet very melodic lines. His sound and style is what would have made or broke the band. Luckily, Thomas' sound was a style people liked and were soon in demand for. Single after single, and performance after performance, the public could not get enough of the band's southern gritty rock. It is quite clear that Thomas' parts are the foundation to the band, and all the other instruments' parts are written to fit his sound. The end result is a standard I-IV-V progression with a passing chord thrown in here and there, but the guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards are in sync with each other almost perfectly. Dynamics are a big trait with this group, and the musicians know how to use this aspect just right for their pieces. YOURSELF OR SOMEONE LIKE YOU is a good record and one for any Matchbox 20 fan.

This CD arrived on a Saturday before my husband and I started out on one of our weekend joy rides ( At over $3.20 a gallon there is just slightly less joy). We slipped the disc in and right from the very opening notes we were possessed. What a performer. We nearly had to pull the car over and start dancing, we COULD NOT sit still.
I love it when Brown gets so worked up he literally squeals with excitement, it send chills up your spine. I would think that listening to this CD would be more effective than medication for the manic depressive personality.

Pretty Much of Historical Interest Only.......2007-04-14

I found James Brown fairly boring back in the day, and I must admit I still find him fairly boring. Back then though I couldn't have predicted that this kind of music would evolve into fusion or Steely Dan pop. It's probably a large exaggeration to say that James Brown and his musicians invented funk, but it may be reasonable to say that they were its chief--or most visible at least--exemplars.

The instrumental parts are of much more interest than James Brown's quasi-parlando, repetitive vocals. The sound quality is generally better than I expected, and the instrumental parts are generally performed cleanly, but the horns are a bit off in "Make it Funky". There is another tune here in which it sounds as if a horn section crescendo is achieved artificially by riding the faders (on the mixing board)--a disagreeable effect.

These must be some of the silliest lyrics ever written, and I find "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World" especially amusingly ridiculous. "Try Me" is supposed to be James Brown's breakthrough tune, but it sounds to me like an utterly conventional, undistinguished fifties recording. At least three of these tracks are essentialy one piece with differing lyrical snippets.

"Your Cheatin' Heart," "Honky-Tonk Blues," "Cold, Cold Heart," "Lovesick Blues," "You Win Again," "I Can't Help It," "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," and the rest. The quality of the recording is pretty decent, considering that some of the music was originally recorded a long time ago. Sell 10 million copies of your debut album and you might find yourself putting on a few airs. Evidence that it's happened to matchbox twenty can be found in the new, spelled-out format of their all-lowercased name and the pretentious insertion of that name into the title of this, their sophomore set. The level of popularity achieved by their 1996 debut, Yourself or Someone Like You, posed a more profound problem, though--should they follow in the footsteps of that smash effort, or strike out in a different direction? To their credit, the Orlando quintet puts their massive popularity on the line by opting mostly for the latter course: there are no obvious retreads here of earlier hits such as "Push," "3 a.m.," and "Real World"--or of "Smooth," the multiple-Grammy-winning Santana hit penned and sung by matchbox frontman Rob Thomas. Instead, the album sports a nice mix of material that is catchy, but may take a little longer to settle into your memory banks, such as the moody yet intense "Bent," the horn-driven rocker "Black & White People," and several songs examining various aspects of relationships, "If You're Gone," "Rest Stop," and "Bed of Lies." Whatever the members of matchbox twenty want to call themselves, these guys may yet be able to have it all--artistic growth as well as massive sales. Not amazing, but has AMAZING moments.......2007-01-25

Okay, maybe I'm not really authorized to write a review on this album. I don't even really own it, I just borrowed it from the library. However, I loved a few of the songs so much I bought them from iTunes. Songs like "Leave", "If You're gone" (the hit frequently heard on the radion), and, most importantly, "You Won't Be Mine". This song is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. It's one of my very favorite songs. It's SO pretty, and I love the orchestral arrangement. Rob Thomas does a fantastic job on the piano in this number. The bad thing about the version that you can purchase from iTunes is that the end is cut off, in order to make the song shorter, because the song on the album seems to end, but then there are three minutes of silence, and the orchestra comes in again. Rather strange, maybe, but a beautiful part of the song that you cannot get on iTunes.
Apart from these songs, there are none that particularly stand out to me. I do enjoy "Bent", "Angry", "Bed Of Lies", and "Crutch", but not enough to go out and buy the CD. They are nice in small doses, but not worth the money. The chord progressions seem not quite finished, almost, but the lyrics are very meaningful, which makes up for it in part, but not entirely.
In conclusion, my final rating for the album is three stars for several outstanding numbers ("You Won't Be Mine"!!!), and a whole lot of okay ones.
P.S. "Black and White People" is not, as I thought at first, a rather racist title-it's refering to the minds and/or souls of people... Black and white as opposed to technicolor, you might say. :)

it's unnerving.......2006-12-25

It's not coincidental that Mad Season begins with the hard-driving rock & roll and the suppressed, denied, explosive anger of 'Angry'.

Not coincidental. Rather an announcement that the fabulous band Matchbox Twenty is back and is still who they were. Only better, if that's possible.

They're still remembering:

'So scream you, out from behind the bitter ache
Heavy on the memory, you need most'

'Black and White People' continues this heavily-caffeinated album, with its brass back-up, upbeat tempo, and enigmatic lyrics:

'If it's just that you're weak
Can we talk about it
It's gettin' so damn creepy
Just nursing this ghost of a chance
The fiction, the romance
And the Technicolor dreams
Of black and white people'.

OK, then. I think we need some color commentary.

Or not. Because the anger resumes with highly intelligible clarity on the next track, 'Crutch':

'Man I feel like hell so come on over
Be a love machine and I could be your friend
Ain't no shame feel strong for one another
Make a real true color come end to end then
God damn, change of pace
I think there's still a piece of my heart on your face
It's a shame to let it waste
How does it taste? How does it taste?

I don't want to be the crutch
One step from down
I don't want to be the crutch
One step from down, down, down, down, down'


It's too earlier to tell how this emotionally raw self-disclosure will wear. Will we hum 'Crutch' in 2025?
But for now, the golden appeal of Matchbox Twenty derives from the fact that they write this stuff down as the feel it. And then they sing it to really, really good music.

One hopes, for their sake, that they find some mutuality, some enduring reconciliation of love and self-interest, some peace. One hopes for the music that they don't make this discovery too soon. Not, say, before one more album like this one.

Alas, the boys of Matchbox Twenty are only sure of one thing: that hearts will continue to break. In this, they are the quintessential children of their generation:

'It won't be the first heart that you break
It won't be the last -- beautiful girl
The one that you wrecked wont' tak you back
If you were the last ...

This will all fall down
Like everything in the world
This too must end
And all the words we said
We can't take back.'

But they were only words, or at least words is all that's left because the stuff of those words has gone. Again. Leaving only loneliness and a sing-able melody line. Good grief, guys, didn't it ever go right, just once? Didn't it last?

No? OK, then. Please keep writing, singing, recording. We need to hear more of this.

No relenting. 'If you're gone' continues what looks like a MAD SEASON theme if not a Matchbox Twenty dominant motif. Only this time, the loss comes with a hint, a whisp, a remote possibility of reconcilation:

'If you're gone, maybe it's time to go home
There's an awful lot of breathing room
But I can hardly move
If you're gone, baby, you need to come home
Cuz there's a little bit of something me
In everything in you'

But not too much hope:

'I bet you're hard to get over
I be the room just won't shine
I bet my hands I can stay here
I bet you need more than you mind'

Good grief, they captured the loss, didn't they?

The eponymous song of the album is actually quite forgettable. It's kind of a foil to the hauntingly beautiful 'Rest Stop', arguably the song we *will* be humming in 2025:

'Just three miles from the rest stop
And she slams on the brakes
She said I tried to be but I'm not
And could you please collect your things ...

She said: while you were sleeping
I was listening to the radio
And wondering what you're dreaming when
It came to mind that I didn't care
So I thought - hell, if it's over ...

Jus three miles from the rest stop
And my mouth's too dry to rage
The light was shining from the radio
I could barely see her face
But she knew all the words that I never said
She knew the crumpled-up promise of this
Broken-down man, and as I opened the door ...'

This is the selective verbiage of abandonment that isn't supposed to come to men's pens until they've turned forty-five and suffered enough for poignance.

But it keeps on flowing out of the tracks of this magnificent CD. Hear 'The Burn':

'I thought about
Leaving but I couldn't even get outa' bed ...

Thought about
Singin' but I couldn't remember all the words ..

So I wonder how I ever got the burn
Everything and everyone I needed before
Tryin' to get a handle on a reason to shine
Pickin' up the pieces that are falling behind takes time'


There's a sad, almost dissolute self-absorption in all of this, but one that finds its way quickly outward to the lips and hips of Matchbox Twenty's fans and followers. Like the biblical psalms (though these work there way more quickly towards hope), the typical ballad in this CD is intensely personal, yet offered up to a wider community to words that they can instantly claim as their own. There is *almost* not a miss on this entire album, the headline track laid aside for one moment.

'Bent' comes closes to describing the trauma of their voices in a way that takes some degree of responsiblity:

Yet even the confession of being 'bent' ('So can you help me, I'm bent // Im' so scared that I'll never get put back together') is a plea for community, for togetherness, as though the solution to bent-ness is not one to be found in solitude or self-reform:

'If I fall along the way
Pick me up and dust me off
And if I get too tired to make it
Be my breath so I can walk

If I need some other love
Give me more than I can stand
And when my smile gets old and faded
Wait around, I'll smile again'


There are other deeply soulful tunes. 'Bed of Lies'. 'Leave'. 'Stop'. 'You Won't be Mine'. In fact, one rattles on from one emotionally draining track to the next, marveling that MT can keep up the pace.

But they do. These dudes have articulated a life, a throbbing, mobile, abandoned, wishful, painfully memorable pain.

Embedded in this sea of music, listening to it over and over, one hopes for the men of Matchbox Twenty that they truly are 'marking it down to learning'.

There Isn't a Single Bad Song........2006-07-05

Out of the Some odd 200 CD's I own and listen to, this ranks in the top five. Rob Thomas' vocals draw you into each and every song and demand your attention. There are some awesome guitar riffs and the beat to every song is original and catchy. I enjoy the full band sound on "Black and White People", the lyrics to "If You're Gone", and who can NOT like the funky beat in "Mad Season"? With hits such as "Bent" and "Crutch", this CD is too great not to own. Like another reviewer said. "Go buy this. Now."

I bought this CD after hearing "If You're Gone".
I'd never heard of Matchbox 20 before that track. I absolutely fell in love with the whole album. Great listening!

Crossing the Threshold From Pop Success to Serious Artist Expression.......2005-12-02

The fact that these guys hit the charts with their debut release "Yourself or Someone Like You" with such Pop appeal didn't impress me enough to run out and buy this second release; I received it in a bulk buy on eBay. One listen to this artful, soulful expression of the guy's take on relationships, sudden success and enduring sense of innocence and vulnerability made this a 'score'.

Forget the cut by cut commentary - this music reflects an artistic maturation process that is awe-inspiring and stunning; they've become tighter in their delivery and, perhaps that is reflected by the truly talented arraingments and writing. They make it sound easy.

The last cut, "You Won't Be Mine" signals very good things to come. Indeed, it does it's job so well that you will simply sit and contemplate it's delicacy until, perhaps four minutes after it has ended you will get another surprise and a variation of the arraingment floods the senses with the promise of what talent and sensitivity can mean to such an art form as this.
