Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Soulful and just plain fun.......2007-03-08

Saw the Broadway Revue many years ago on Broadway. Always loved the moving music. Reordered the CD so I could put it on my ipod. Some songs are soulful, like "Black and Blue", but most are just plain fun and funny, like "Your feets too big". This should be brought back to Broadway now!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2006-08-25

Very few revue shows are as satisfying as this one. I'm obsessed with the finale right now; can't get enough of it! The cast is stellar, and it's very obvious that each song is telling its own story. What makes it outstanding are the arrangements.

4 out of 5 stars Great, Late Nell Carter.......2006-07-30

What a shame that Nell Carter didn't do more theater or sing more than she did. I would have loved to have seen and heard her do more. An incredible voice. How sad that she passed so young. I had the pleasure of meeting her and talking with her at length in 1984, and she was as warm and charming as could be. A lovely woman.

5 out of 5 stars Best Broadway musical of 1978 - hand down!!!.......2006-07-28

Fans of Fats Waller should all have this in their collection. The night I went to see the show was so close to what is on the CD - it's amazing. This CD allows me to re-live that magical evening.

It was hard to find this CD. I looked high and low in my hometown, and am glad that Amazon had it to offer. Thanks to Amazon for having what some consider "out of the way" items for us 'finicky' consumers.

4 out of 5 stars OOPS.......2006-07-18

CD itself was satisfactory - however the cd case was cracked - since it did not impact the cd itself I decided against returning it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars three Stars is Generous.......2007-03-20

You can forgive the early album experiments prior to Phenomenon but this and the Misdemeanor album are in my opinion poor and not identifiable as true UFO sounding albums. This is OK if you like AOR with "Between a Rock and a Hard Place" being the best track on offer. For a trademark UFO album Schenker on guitar is a bonus but you must have the song writing combo and performance crunching backbone of Phil Mogg and Pete Way. Thank goodness these two got back together to create the trademark sound again on "High Stakes" and the other later UFO and Mogg/Way albums which are all significantly better. Three stars is generous for these seven tracks which are a little bit but not much better than the last efforts on "Misdemeanor". Save these 'till last if your collecting the back catalogue.

5 out of 5 stars Another UFO classic.......2004-03-14

In '88 UFO had a lot to prove. Their last album, as great as it
was, was their least successful in many years, and the rock
landscape was far less hospitable to the band than ever before.
So Mogg, Simpson, Gray and Atomic Tommy shrugged and got down
to business with this mini-album. This cd is a scorcher. UFO
hadn't rocked this hard in years, and the performances are
every bit as amazing as anything the band would ever do.
Sadly, "Ain't Misbehavin" was even less popular than
"Misdemeanor", selling to the hardcore fans and not even being
noticed by anyone else. It proved to be the final release
from this lineup, as when the next UFO slab finally
appeared four years later Mogg had again reorganised the band.
UFO never put out substandard work, and "Ain't Misbehavin" can
proudly stand alongside the rest of their amazing catalog.

3 out of 5 stars An easy review to write knowing that better stuff is coming.......2004-02-26

While "Ain't Misbehavin'" isn't on par with any of UFO's more shining works like "Light's Out", "Obsession", or even "Mechanix", it's nowhere near as bad as "Misdemeanor", (which was so bad that it should have been called "Felony".) This is the kind of '80's metal that might grow on you if given time, but I doubt you'd pack it for a road trip. At least the band isn't doing the Eric Carmen thing with their hair anymore.

3 out of 5 stars Their Hair Band Phase.......2002-04-30

These seven tracks find perennial frontman Phil Mogg wandering in the wilderness of late 80's hair metal with the same group (minus Paul Raymond) who cranked out the Whitesnake-ish "Misdeameanor" album a few years after the Mogg-Way-Chapman-Parker-Raymond lineup gave up the ghost and Phil had to start again from scratch. If you hold your nose and close your eyes, you'll get past the obilgatory sexpot strut and frenzied shredding to find that this stuff ain't half bad if only because Mogg always surrounds himself with guys who know how to produce solid hooks and a satisfying crunch. Far from the best UFO, but hardly the worst. If you got some disposable dough you don't know what to do with, there are more reprehensible ways to squander it.

    3 out of 5 stars phil mogg,lost soul.......2002-03-18

the songs are not bad , the album is not bad, but I can sence a touch of sadness in this music, as if phil became a lost soul and a soul survivor, it's like he was saying I am here to rock,
but hey Michael,Pete,Andy,Paul .....Where is everybody? i'll still hold on the name ufo as long as i can.

Not that it should come as any surprise that Marian McPartland--the longtime host of NPR's Piano Jazz and a leading figure in jazz piano for over four decades running--has released another fine album of piano duets, but this one is even more satisfying than longtime fans could rightly expect. Transferring the format of her radio program to the stage of Chicago's venerable Jazz Showcase, Ain't Misbehavin' matches McPartland with the veteran Chicago pianist Willie Pickens, and the result is pure piano-jazz heaven. Right from the opening title track, the chemistry between McPartland and Pickens is electric, with McPartland's more reserved style perfectly complementing Pickens's dense and outgoing playing that at times has him sounding like two pianos all by himself. On "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" the two effortlessly trade licks and accompaniment until their styles seem to merge into a wonderfully united blur, and on "Along Came Betty" Pickens's more bluesy soloing style contrasts perfectly with McPartland's accompaniment. But it's the pair's versatility that really pushes Ain't Misbehavin' into another sphere, with the two not only trading licks on some well-worn jazz standards but also lighting up some lovely solo performances here as well, like Pickens's impressionistic "Spring Is Here" and McPartland's beautiful rendition of "Autumn Nocturne." --Ezra Gale

5 out of 5 stars Communion of two distinct, and fine-aged, spirits.......2002-07-03

Some say that all creativity and inspiration is a communion with God. The precision of science displays how God thinks; while artistic effort hints at the emotional side of God. What we are suposed to do with this gift is, in part, portrayed in the music on this album.

Truth and beauty alternately flow and surge from the shared minds of McPartland and Pickens. The two of them are simply dazzling with each other--picking up each other's ideas, examining them, elaborating on them, merging them in a "wall" of sound and then softly winding down and disengaging in quiet reflection. The essence of jazz is musical conversation----spontaneous and disciplined conversation.

There are no distractions in this dialogue--just the stark beauty of twin and solo acoustic pianos. This is a live concert and the audience is very enthusiastic. Clearly, there is a spiritual "electricity" connecting Pickens and McPartland, which got transmitted to the crowd. Their response is thunderous.

Pickens and McPartland are from different jazz generations. He from Be-Bop and she from Swing. Even though their styles are well individuated from each other--they easily get "in each other's backyard" so to speak. These are old traditions; but the music on this disc is as fresh as the odor of a newborn infant. Though both musicians are "about as old as The Hills", neither one sounds "dated" in any way. This music, like most great art, is timeless.

Their solo works are mini-masterpieces. Willie Pickens' versions of "Spring is Here" and "Paper Moon" are unique and I don't think I have ever heard "Spring" done more delicately and with such quiet intensity--it's a great, romantic, mini-concerto all it's own. I can't hear enough of McPartland's "Autumn Nocturne". It makes me go "Aaahhhhhh...." each time I hear it.

I can only hope that they will do another one like this very soon.

        5 out of 5 stars "McPartland & Pickens glitter...are hot together!".......2001-07-18

We all know the distinctive style of Marian McPartland...unmistakable...but let's look at Willie Pickens...plays up a storm on the piano, never stops when it comes to pleasing the audience...Marian and Willie are completely spell-binding on every track...but the stand out ~ "JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS", a Cole Porter tune...the two musicians burn up the keyboard with over a seven minute performance...can only be described as the epitome of two classic jazz-people enjoying what they do best...perform on the piano...so do yourself a favor...pick this one up...spin it, sit back and groove to the best live jazz concert you'll ever witness.

Actor-turned-director Peter Chelsom calls Town & Country the "story of a man who dips his toe in the water of extramarital activity and nearly drowns," but it is better described as a comedy of manners tailored to the talents of stars Warren Beatty, Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn, and Gary Shandling. Chelsom wisely delegates the musical score to fellow Englishman Rolfe Kent, a musician who's become one of the foremost practitioners of sophisticated comedy scoring (see Slums of Beverly Hills, Election, Nurse Betty). This soundtrack kicks off with a slate of pop tunes--from Patsy Cline and Louis Armstrong to Django Reinhardt and the Royal Crown Revue--that set the film's screwball tone, and Kent manages to subtly evoke the same sentiments in his playful orchestral writing. The musical touchstones here are the European comedic scores of Rota, Piovani, and, especially, Morricone's rich '70s oeuvre, though Kent infuses his distinctive work with modern touches and imaginative instrument choices. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars An interesting, unique soundtrack.......2002-02-08

O.K., O.K. I know the film bombed. Call me and my husband weird, but we enjoyed the film and we really like listening to the soundtrack. It has a great variety of music. It has moody stuff, dancing stuff, mysterious stuff, etc. If you have eclectic tastes, I think you'll like this soundtrack. I really do. If you're into hip-hop, rap, techno, or anything even approaching these genres, forget it. You'll hate this. This is good old fashioned MUSIC.
