Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for any Manilow fan.......2007-06-20

What's different about this set is that it has some alternate recordings of songs we all love. There are several "live" recordings and some songs sung the way they were originally written. I especially liked the original version of "I made it through the rain." You also receive a book with comments from the original composers/arrangers of the songs - lots of "behind the scenes" information. Thanks, Barry, for continuing to feed our hunger!

4 out of 5 stars Barry Manilow- Complete Collection surprises included.......2007-01-20

To potential buyers of the Barry Complete Collection: I grew up singing his songs and have never stopped. I went on to have a 20 year classical singing career but Barry always remained part of my "I call it happy Music"....This collection is interesting for it combines so many different styles and Barry himself is not shy to try for EX: Ave Maria which is my least favorite. I also have never been a lover of the very fast Copa and and other's like it. I have alwys been a ballad gal at heart. Barry does not fall short here with this extended 4 CD and one DVD collection. What I lOVE is that he shares with us so much of his early years with demos where he can even make a mistake and we won't care. He shows us he is a human who sighs and may sing a note that is too edgy or added words on a never released song that you do not hear on the released album. I find this a lot of fun and the added booklet gives you a solid history of the background of Barry's talent which is immense. His voice is his voice and he never feels that he needs to make a big deal about it. It is and appropriate for what he does and he is one of the best song writers we will ever have. I am and will always be a true fan of Barry Manilow. If you ar a die hard Barry fan "This one is for you"

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-01-16

This collection is great for anyone who has a lot of other Manilow music. Songs that have not been released, or alternate versions. It's a historic collection.

5 out of 5 stars Let it storm. I've got this collection to keep me warm.......2006-10-10

This 4-CD + 1-DVD + Book set is awesome! 70 arrangements of Barry s-s-s-s-o-o-o-ngs on CD and 12 more on DVD! (Sorry, I got so excited, I stuttered! Geeze! That's 82 songs!!! You can drive from here to Kookamonga with this set! By the way, you need a car, too.) I put the 4 CDs in the car the other day and took the 1 ½ hour trek up to Lancaster to shop. Had the CDs playing ALL DAY LONG, without a repeat. Went up to Lititz, Kissel Hill, and all around the cat's barn, dodging bad drivers on cell phones, and back home to Baltimore again. Had a great time with these Barry songs. This is a fantastic collection of so many great songs, even if you already have many other Manilow CDs.

There are many Barry classics and many Barry songs only found on a limited number of CDs, and some I haven't even heard before. Some of the classics or semi-classics are just a wee bit different from other arrangements on other Barry CDs.

This is the only place I've found "Ave Maria." It's on Disc 3--absolutely beautiful--sung in both English and Latin. I also found a combo of "My Girl/No One in This World" on Disc 4, that is so very pretty. "How Do I Stop Loving You" is also another beauty on Disc 3.

On Disc 2, "I'm Your Man" always makes me wanna dance, and depending on where I am, I do just that! This version is extended, all the better to dance with, my dear. "Hey Mambo, Riders to the Stars, Beautiful Music," rev me up to do battle with the negative-ites of the world. "Memory" and "If I Can Dream" are beauties also found on Disc 2.

Disc 4 has "Let Freedom Ring," a patriotic song from 1991, also found on the "2 Nights Live" set. "If Tomorrow Never Comes" is a Garth Brooks Country Western song and is such a gorgeous song (If I don't wake up in the morning, would she know how much I love her?) I would have cried when I heard it, but I'm tuff (nah-try stay puft marshmello)!

I recently read a comment Barry wrote about "I Write the Songs," and Hey, I get it! I thought the song was beautiful before, but now, WOW! He basically said that the lyric's writer was referring to the Spirit of music as writing the songs (through a person), rather than a person writing them. Listen to this song in that perspective. It gives it very special meaning. You'll also hear reference to Spirit in "Daybreak".

Got some broadway musical songs here, too, on Disc 4 that are great and are also on "Showstoppers" CD.

Disc 1 also has some beauties, such as "As Sure as I'm Standing Here, I Don't Want to Walk Without You, and If I Should Love Again."

And there are just so many other great songs here, all the classics and more, HOURS of great entertainment. Check out the list. There's also the DVD and a substantial booklet of nostalgic pictures and comments, including the stud-muffin picture of Barry on the inside cover. I'm guessing he was in his early 30s.

People ask me why I'm so happy all the time and some ask "what I'm on." Recently, someone said, "You're not normal." I said, "Been there, done that. Normal is overrated." I try to tell them my big secret is all that Barry music, but they just won't believe me. (Don't tell anybody, but it keeps me young, too. S-h-h-h-h.) Hey, let the Spirit COME ON IN! Buy this set. It is well worth the price. It's also a great gift for someone. A lotta music for what you can easily spend on dinner at Outback!

5 out of 5 stars I Wish I Bought This Years Ago.......2006-04-03

If you just want to listen to Barry's biggest hits, buy The Essential Barry Manilow. But if you want to get a closer look at many of his songs--alternate versions, early drafts--and just get a great feel for the evolution of Barry's songcraft, this collection is superb. Sure you can hear Copacabana if you wish on this collection, but you can also hear part of his at-home audiotape when he was actually writing the darn thing! There are a handful of never-heard-before songs and some oldies I remember loving but hadn't heard in quite awhile ("All the Time" is an example--superb song, heartfelt performance).

Did you know that "I Made It Through the Rain" was originally written about a songwriter trying to persevere? The version in this set is that original version, different lyrics ("I made it through the rain, I kept my songs protected...")while the booklet explains why Barry and friends rewrote the lyrics to the one that became a hit. The version of "Can't Smile Without You" contains a soft-shoe middle that is very enchanting, and never before heard.
The set is filled with stylistic changes and different versions of hit songs so that even if you own one of his "Best Of" collections you'll still regard this compilation as fresh.

Barry is the performer I keep coming back to. When I haven't listened to his songs for a while and then come upon a collection like this, I wish I had never paused in my listening. He possesses a unique talent--an ability to write beautifully, play piano masterfully and evocatively, and sing so well. He doesn't have the voice of a Josh Groban (few do) but his voice is easily among those most enjoyable to hear; powerful and yet down to earth; an old friend. And he puts across his songs in such a heartfelt way, you know he has a depth to his spirit and an artistry that not every performer possesses.

Plus, you get a DVD and a large booklet with photos and pages of liner notes written by Barry and others, describing the songs presented herein.

All in all, a treasure. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars These Cyns Are Good For You.......2007-05-08

"Twelve Deadly Cyns...and Then Some" is the offical greatest hits of Cyndi Lauper. The album was released in 1994 and is the best greatest hits of Cyndi's to date. The album features Cyndi's number one hits of her career, the album also features at that time three new songs made specially for this compilation, they are "Hey Now (Girls Just Want To Have Fun)", "I'm Gonna Be Strong" which is a re-recording of a song that Cyndi sang when she was with the group "Blue Angel" and "Come On Home". The album was released with similar packaging but track listings varyed based on which songs charted in various parts of the world. It's greatest sales success was in Japan where it went Platinum 5x. It's greatest chart success was in the United Kingdom where it reached #2 on the charts spending almost nine months on the chart, eventually going double platinum selling almost 900,000 copies. In the USA it reached Gold status. The album would go on to sell over four million copies worldwide. There was some issue with the division of royalties due to the wide array of co-writers on the various tracks that prevented Cyndi from releasing the longer version in the United States. The album was originally called "13 Deadly Cyns" and in fact a promotional cassette with this title (and an alternate track listing) was pressed and distributed in the United Kingdom in June of 1992. Out of all the Cyndi Lauper greatest hits compilations, this is the one to buy, it was released by Epic, where Cyndi still makes albums for.

P.S. - Better late, then never.

5 out of 5 stars Cyndi Lauper's Best Stuff.......2007-02-19

This is a compilation of all of Cyndi Lauper's greatest hits. If you are a fan of Cyndi's hugely beautiful voice and and her perky, positive New York attitude this is the CD to have. It has all of her hits plus two previously unreleased songs that are just as good. The lyrics of all songs are also provided. If you have just discovered how interesting Cyndi is, this is a lot cheaper than buying all her original CDs.

great purchase recieved on time and in great shape

5 out of 5 stars Classic 80s.......2006-08-18

"Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" is probably one of the best 80s songs of all time in my opinion. I heard it at most dances in high school, including prom. I saw Cyndi in concert a summer during college and even twenty plus years later, she still looks young and sings great. The other songs on this album are great as well. Rock on Cyndi!

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't get much better.......2006-04-05

As an album it was my first Cyndi.
Heady tracks with percussion and bass, a voice so strong and unlike anything else I'd heard.
I was enthralled.
'I'm gonna be strong' as an initial track sets a high bench mark for the rest of the tracks.
'Time after time' the essential Cyndi classic, hard hitting and deep, a song full of loss that is given in complete contrast to the following song 'She bop' which is upbeat and funky, an enjoyable opposite.
'True Colors' takes it down a peg again, soft and sombre, bass tones that you can relax with and then up again with 'What's going on'.
A rollercoaster ride to be sure - this album led to me buying many more, the extent and depth of Miss Laupers range has not yet been exhausted it seems.
This is a very good album for anyone to start their collection of Cyndi with, I would also hazard to say that anyone who has never considered a Miss Lauper album would enjoy this as a one off to their collection.

Chicagoan Oscar Brown Jr. stormed his way to early '60s prominence with the Columbia debut album that provides the bulk of this satisfying collection. A lush, nimble baritone and a keen sense of his identity as an African American made Sin & Soul a triumphant calling card, its range of characters and narratives going far beyond the usual canon of romantic pop covers, as Brown dug into the knotty experience of black America, a volatile prospect in 1960 when the original version of the album was cut. It's not a stretch to argue that tracks like "But I Was Cool," his hilarious portrait of a clueless loser, or "Bid 'Em In," a riveting slave auctioneer's patter, prefigured rap, but Brown also delivers shuffles, tender ballads, and theatrical set pieces, some reworking solid instrumentals from Bobby Timmons, Herbie Hancock, Mongo Santamaria, and Bobby Bryant. From the tender paternal pride of "Dat Dere" to the teeth-gritting chain gang anthem, "Work Song," the set remains a classic, sensuous, vibrantly moral, funny, and tragic. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding! .......2007-07-20

Is this great music or what? To me, there's absolutely nothing like it. That voice of his, that booming, beautiful baritone... I get goose bumps just thinking about it. I own this classic on both vinyl and CD. Of the thousands of recordings (of all genres) that I own, I would place this one in my top twenty favorites. It is definitely one of my top ten favorite jazz vocal albums and I usually can't go more than two weeks without playing it. Each time, I hear something completely new and exciting.

From the moment you pop this one on and hear "Work Song" this recording grabs hold of you and never lets go. The range of emotions this man is able to emit from his voice is simply unparalled. Bottom line, this one will knock your socks off! Plus, his version of "Dat Dere" can't be touched. I love playing that song to my son, and can't wait until he's old enough to sing it with me.

I promise you that if ever a recording is worthy of five stars, this one is it!

4 out of 5 stars Flash from the past...........2007-05-17

Dat Dere has been stuck in my head for weeks! What a great song and voice. Most songs on the CD are super and fun to revisit.

5 out of 5 stars This 'Sin & Soul' Has Always Run Deep.......2007-03-20

I was a kid looking up at being a teenager when I first experienced `Sin & Soul.' In fact, it was the sudden retrieval of an up-til-then forgotten memory that made me wish madly that I could find a copy of this Oscar Brown, Jr. classic.

The album (yes, it was and always will be the album I remember and hear) was my big sister's. I wore out that record more listening to it more than she did until I had every word of every lyric memorized. The magic was that you do not memorize the lyrics of what Oscar Brown, Jr. has compiled here - you feel them, deep within you. From the first time I heard `Chain Gang' I visualized with crystal clarity not what being on the chain gang was like, but why the person in the song was on the chain gang in the first place. And I was the kid asking the wild questions of `What Dat Dere?'

I can never think about `Signifyin' Monkey; I always see and act out the play that the story is revealing to me. It was a long time that I was even conscious that neither Oscar Brown, Jr. nor I were singing the song with a straight voice, but with character voices. That's how vivid that song is.

"Watermelon Man" brings up images from my days of summer vacations with my Chicago cousins as we visited our aunt and cousins in St. Louis. `Rags and Old Iron' was one of my St. Louis aunt's neighbors: a very sweet but lonely older lady who sat out on the front porch most of the day and into the night. Oscar Brown Jr.'s depiction of the slave trade hits me more deeply than seeing his images come to life in the TV miniseries "Roots." I think I learned a lesson without knowing it from the desperate, life-weary old man in `Somebody Buy Me a Drink.'

It will always be difficult to categorize `Sin & Soul.' It defies pigeon holing. Oscar Brown Jr. displays a diversity here that is part poetry, folk, jazz, blues, and plain ol' singer-songwriter. The arrangements are not fancy but even as a musician who has arranged a lot of music, I cannot imagine touching any of `Sin & Soul.' Some things are just perfect as they are, even 40 years later.

`Sin & Soul' is one of those musical experiences that makes your soul cry out that everyone needs to listen to this and feel it and get into it and understand it and enjoy it. I wish it could get more exposure to more people. If you haven't heard `Sin & Soul,' you need to. I wish Oscar were still around....

5 out of 5 stars A Jazz Phenomenon.......2006-12-22

Oscar Brown Jr was one of a kind. A wonderful baritone voice, a wonderful way with words, a historian's eye for what was going on and a journalist's eye for reporting. He was fully as much the voice of the 60s as Dylan, only he sang better, and he did swing. Oh my did he swing. My all time favorite album was Between Heaven and Hell, but that hasn't been rereleased as yet. Two songs from that album are here, though. Mr Kicks and World Full of Gray. He felt the Black experience, but I'm not Black and I loved his songs. One fantastic song I haven't heard since the 60s is Elegy. Oscar Brown Jr will be missed. Buy this CD before someone realizes that it's meaningful music and takes it off the market.

4 out of 5 stars Absolute Blue Collar Twang.......2001-07-19

Aaron Tippin is hard-core country. His raw, ear-jarring twang often sounds like a howling coyote. Yet Tippin has found a successful niche in country music by consistently relating to working class values on his best singles (most of which he also wrote). All of those very best cuts are found on this thirteen-track collection - along with a few also-rans.

"Working Man's Ph.D." and "I Got It Honest" take a proud stance on manual labor. "You've Got To Stand For Something" and "I Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way" celebrate sticking to one's beliefs and doing the right thing no matter where you come from. Tippin also appeals to his less-than -wealthy core audience through humor on "There Ain't Nothing Wrong With The Radio". This novelty number depicts the car from hell which an upbeat Tippin won't unload, due to its lone remaining sonic asset.

Tippin even fits some romantic songs into his repertoire (usually of the unsuccessful at love type). The honky tonkin' "My Blue Angel" finds Tippin yodelling about a lost love he's still searching for, while in the straight forward ballad That's As Close As I'll Get To Loving You," he pines for a girl he can never have. When Tippin does finally get the girl in a song, it turns out...he has to answer "The Call Of The Wild."

The ... and then some in the album title refers to the four new tracks which you never heard on a radio station near you since Tippin had parted company with RCA (who subsequently didn't give them a promotional push). Too bad, since a couple of the tunes are vintage Tippin. "The Door" uses typical Tippin metaphors like a hammer, saw, and hard work to construct the tale of a struggling relationship whose inhabitants need a little space, while the atmospheric "Cold Gray Kentucky Morning" revisits the lost love angle.

You won't find a lot of emotional depth on this collection. Tippin seeks foremost to entertain his listeners and, within the confines of his working man persona, he usually succeeds. If you are in the mood for some country music that's festive and you don't mind a lotta twang, give this set a try.

4 out of 5 stars A Different Kind of Country.......2000-11-02

Aaron Tippin has one heck of a unique voice, and is a very talented performer. His song lyrics are always from the heart, and one can tell he lives by his own rules. I know people who don't like country who like Aaron Tippin. Stand-out tracks on this album include "My Blue Angel," "You've Got to Stand for Something," "Working Man's PH.D," and "Whole Lotta Love on the Line." Give this CD a try....it's well worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Up there with the best.......2000-09-03

When I first listened to this CD I was reminded of everything I hated about Country Music, back when "twang was the thang" and all songs promoted feelings of suicide. However, this album walks a great middle line between "classic country", and "new American music" - and I have to say does so very well. From the cow call balladeering of Blue Angel to a masterful cover of You have to stand for something. This is the kind of music you can play loud or incidental, a good all round album, with something for everyone. Sadly most New Country in England is unavailable or overpriced unless it is deemed mainstream. This Album is a great introduction to Aaron's extensive vocal and musical range, standing shoulder to shoulder with many of todays other artists, and deserves a wider audience.

5 out of 5 stars A CD CAN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!.......1999-04-26

I WAS TOTALLY DELIGHTED WITH THIS CD. I QUIT LISTENING TO COUNTRY MUSIC ON THE RADIO QUITE A WHILE BACK BECAUSE I THINK THE MAJORITY OF THE NEW COUNTRY ARTISTS TODAY ALL SOUND ALIKE. I ACCIDENTALLY FOUND A COUNTRY STATION THAT PLAYS ONLY "OLD" COUNTRY MUSIC AND AARON TIPPIN WAS THE FEATURED ARTIST FOR THE DAY. WHEN HE SINGS "THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I HOLD YOU" -- EVEN THOUGH I DON'T SMOKE -- I NEED A CIGARETTE! THAT HAS GOT TO BE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONG I HAVE EVER HEARD. I BOUGHT THE CD JUST FOR THAT SONG. I WAS THRILLED WITH THE REST AND SOON BECAME QUITE ENTHRALLED WITH HIS "THAT'S AS CLOSE AS I'LL GET TO LOVING YOU". THERE IS NOTHING ANYONE CAN CRITICIZE ABOUT THIS CD OR THIS MAN. WHAT A MAN! WHAT A SINGER!

More comedy monologue than musical performance, Bea Arthur's one-woman show Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends collects memories from the silver-haired star's life on Broadway (Fiddler on the Roof, Mame, The Threepenny Opera) and television (Maude, The Golden Girls).

"I wanted to see if I had the guts to just come and be myself," Arthur says in this performance recorded in front of a live audience in December 2001. Alongside co-creator and pianist Billy Goldenberg, she offers wry and often funny anecdotes about her career and the people she's worked with (Angela Lansbury, Pia Zadora). When she does sing ... well, even decades ago Arthur didn't have a beautiful voice, but she's well-suited to the comedy songs. And her versions of Kurt Weill's "Pirate Jenny" and Goldenberg's own "Fifty Percent"--while they won't make anyone forget Lotte Lenya or Dorothy Loudon--are effective in their own right. Bea Arthur on Broadway is definitely more Bea than Broadway, but it's a career well worth remembering. --David Horiuchi

    5 out of 5 stars And Then There's BEA!.......2007-01-20

Thank goodness this is available on CD. I saw the show twice in Manhattan and once in P-town MA. She is an American treasure. What's nice is that you don't need to have had seen the live performance to enjoy this CD. (Though I'd love to have it on DVD.) Just Bea, Billy, a piano and yet so much more!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Golden Girl Shines Brightly.......2005-10-21

For anyone who has ever laughed as Bea Arthur deftly put people in their place with her lightning quick wit as Dorothy on the "Golden Girls", they will not be disappointed with this CD. Arthur, some 9 years after leaving the small screen, returns triumphantly to her professional roots, the stage, and does not disappoint. Mixing antedotal stories with classic songs, all to the accompianment of Billy Goldenburg, Arthur weaves her life in a brillant 90 minute tapestry so that the listener regrets ever reaching the end. Anyone who has ever seen Arthur perform on stage, or as Maude or Dorothy, they will not regret purchasing this CD. For that rare minority of people who have not have the privilage of seeing Arthur previously should find out what they have been missing of this American icon.

5 out of 5 stars Alive and Unforgettable.......2004-11-21

Bea Arthur. Nearing 80. And yet, her continuing vitality is blatantly obvious in this live recording. I will tell you this--I bought this disc with no expectations whatsoever. I like Golden Girls as much as the next chap, and I was slightly curious about what Bea had become.

The simple truth was that I was stunned. Completely stunned. Again, this sounds as the same, alive, malicious woman who portrayed those "affirmative women" on TV (per her own words). She mocks her own voice, recalling the humiliation of being mistaken for the man of the house through the phone ... and some--who buy this disk with the intent of getting a faultless musical performance--might agree (and according to some reviews her, HAVE agreed) that her voice is perhaps too deep, too cutting, not pure enough. But this is NOT (and I stress it) a musical performance per se, it is not a perfectly rounded voice singing perfect standards.

What this disc is? A drama performance. The songs are intermissed with speech interludes, during which Bea narrates anecdotes from her past experience as an actress--and that's is PRECISELY what is MAGIC. You feel as though she's inviting you to witness the high points of her life, and it's a very nice place. The songs, seem alive as rarely before, because they are performed. She renders them with life, and make the most of her abilities.

I really appreciated some of the smaller things. You get to recognize her trademark, slightly embarassed, `You know' ... She'll make you laugh with good natured reminiscence ("A Mother's Ingenuity"!); some of the songs are delightfully imperfect, (I learned to love the half-sung/half-spoken "What Do You Start" ...), some others are wonderfully dynamic ("What Can You Get a Nudist For Her Birthday?", "Threepenny Opera/Pirate Jenny" ...), but all are very enjoyable ...

Be it "Isn't He Adorable?" or "If I Can't Sell It, I'll Keep Sittin' on It" ... every track on this disc will have you fondly reminisce or curiously discover the career of one helluva woman.

You really can't be disappointed. I promise.

If only we could have a visual as well!

5 out of 5 stars A trip down memory lane..........2003-10-19

Bea Arthur, one of the finest performers of her time.
Bea is most known for her role on the sitcoms Golden Girls and Maude, but she's done so much theater work as well.
She was in the cast of the original U.S production of "Threepenny Opera" starring Lotta Lenya, and in the original cast of "Fiddler On The Roof" and "Mame". But Bea started her theater career in a show called "The Shoestring Revue".
Bea stoled the scene every night when she performed as yente the Matcmaker on "Fiddler On The Roof" and she also got a hole lot of response as Vera Charles on "Mame", starring Angela Lansbury. In this live performence Bea performs a collection of songs chosen by herself, such as, "Let's Face The Music And Dance", "Isn't He Adorable", "Fifty Percent" and her theme song from Mame "The Man In The Moon". Bea is absolutely one of our time finest performers, with her witty sence of knowledge and her indefiable voice she has establised herself as a broadway legend, alongside Judy Garland, Elaine Stritch, Mary Martin. She is one of the last broadway female legends alive. And still going strong, Bea is rounding 80, but you wouldn't notice.
Do yourself a favour and take a trip down down memory lane, it's your chance to hang out with the last female broadway legend around.

    5 out of 5 stars A Truly Remarkable Accomplishment.......2003-06-16

As a huge fan of Bea Arthur's, I was very excited when I heard she would return to Broadway to do a one-woman show. Not since winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for "Mame" has Bea Arthur been on stage. Well, what a way to follow up! This cd (which was recorded during a live performance) Bea gives fans an intimate look into her show business life. The stories are very funny and touching, and the songs (which Bea picked out herself) are fun, beautiful, and magical. A favorite part of this cd for me, is when Bea talks about her days on TV. She was the star of two very successful and groundbreaking sitcoms, "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" I am a huge fan of "The Golden Girls" and Bea's character Dorothy was always my favorite. This cd is a must for any Bea Arthur fan, but the appeal of this amazing show goes beyond her hardcore fans. Any fan of classic Broadway and cabaret songs will love this cd. This is one of the favorite cds I own, and should be treasured by more people. And finally, as a sidenote, Bea's one-woman show was nominated for a Tony Award in 2001 in the category of Best Special Theatrical Event.

5 out of 5 stars James King sings from the heart.......2006-03-23

As is the norm for James King, his songs come from the heart. Because of this, expect your emotions to be tweaked, the tears to flow and many hours of listening enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars James King shines.......2004-01-10

James King is an impressive traditional bluegrass vocalist. Of the three albums of his I own this is definitely my favorite. The album title makes a lot of sense, because it will make you feel lonesome. The song selection is great, and my favorite is Hazel Dickens "Just A Few Old Memories." He has a truly powerful and stunning voice that will capture the fan of any traditional country or bluegrass lover. I would describe this entire album as "The Stanley Brothers meet George Jones." And if you think both or either of those are great musicians you will absolutely love "Lonesome and then Some." If you don't own any of King's stuff this a good album to start with.

5 out of 5 stars Nice mix of bluegrass picking and Country soul.......2003-01-23

James King is currently one pof my favorite bluegrass singers, a traditionalist with a nice ear for new tunes. This was the album that really turned my head in his direction... It's a great record, with a couple of brief lulls, but it mainly packs a real wallop. I particularly like King's ability to dip into George Jones-ish heartsongs, notably on his version of Hank Cochran's "It'll Be Me," as fine a tribute to Ole Possum's country crooning as anyone might ask for... The picking on here, courtesy of Dudley Connell, Tom Adams and others, is also mighty fine. A really nice record... recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Bluegrass sad love song singing.......2000-07-26

James King told me that his version of Hazel Dickens 'Just a Few Old Memories' was Dolly Parton's favorite. James King reaches deep into America's Bluegrass tradition to find tearful love songs that he sings with his tenor Bluegrass sound. A former U.S. Marine, he uses his strength of character to sing sad love songs about broken hearts with the inflection that only a spurned lover could feel.

The musicians backing King play with feeling and percision and provide subtle harmonizing to complement King's strong tenor. - 2000

The songwriting is honest and emotional yet never cloying or trite. A great album.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing music, amazing lyrics.......1998-05-05

I honestly believe (and earnestly hope) that Christine Kane is an up-and-comer whose name everyone will know very soon. Her voice, her guitar playing (and that of fellow guitarist Richard Birt), her sheer ability to capture incredible emotion into every song, have caused reviewers to compare her to the Indigos, Shawn Colvin, and Mary Chapin Carpenter. And she's at least as talented as any of these. This album, though somewhat spartan in arrangement, features some truly great songs and while more orchestration would be fine, it's completely unneeded. They're songs you feel completely comfortable in from the first time your hear them, like your favorite chair. Ms. Kane's ability to understand human emotion and her capacity for what Tom Robbins calls "joy in spite of everything" make her albums indispensable for anyone even remotely interested in the best of the modern acoustic world.
