5 out of 5 stars The emergence of bop tenor.......2004-01-23

The kings of bop were Dizzy and Bird - on trumpet and alto, and there were Bud Powell, Monk, Kenny Clarke and Max Roach on piano and drums. It may be true that the tenor sax is just not suitable for bebop, just as the soprano sax is certainly not - but for other reasons. The tenor sound is just too big for the fast flurry of arpeggio notes, that is part of bop playing.
Dexter Gordon was one tenor player who managed to excell playing bebop without loosing any of the sound qualities of his instrument. His deep and elastic sound was part of the great tenor tradition, yet perfectly modern. I am convinced that the evolution of Sonny Rolling, Joe Henderson and John Coltrane, could not have been what it was without the influence of Dexter's sound.
It is interesting to compare Gordon with the great Wardell Gray, who is co featured on many tracks - especially the third cd. Gray's harmonic ideas were modern - but rhythmically he was part of the older tradition.

These recordings, spanning an era between 1943 and 1950, are crucial to the development of bop tenor saxophone playing. They contain exciting live jam session recordings as well as studio recording, and great playing from all musicians involved - Fats Navarro, Gray, Teddy Edwards, Howard Mcgee, Leo parker, and of course Dexter Gordon himself. I recommend the four CD package to anyone interested in the tenor sax and in bebop.

5 out of 5 stars An essential collection of the first great bop tenor player.......2002-06-22

As I parse through this collection I am amazed that Proper was able to compile such a complete collection surveying the early years of Dexter Gordon. It's all here, the historic Savoy sides that Dexter led between 1945 through 1947 which include a stellar cast of sidemen such as Bud Powell, Max Roach, Fats Navarro and Leo Parker. There is also the historic Dial sides w/ Wardell Gray and Teddy Edwards that produced tracks like "The Chase" (w/ Gray), and "The Duel" (w/ Edwards). A set containing the Savoy and Dial sides would be fantastic on it's own but Proper has also included a number of other tracks of Dexter featured with the Billy Eckstine Band, Dizzy Gillespie's Sextet, Red Norvo, and Benny Carter's band. Also included is the historic 9/4/45 date led by Sir Charles Thompson for the Apollo label that also featured Charlie Parker! And if that wasn't enough there are 5 lenghty tracks recorded on 7/6/47 at the Elk's Auditorium in Los Angeles and billed as the "Hollywood Jazz Concert". These tracks include Howard McGhee, Trummy Young, Sonny Criss, Wardell Gray, Hampton Hawes, and Barney Kessel and although the sound is not superb on the live tracks, the performances are excellent and give the listener an inside look at what the Central Avenue scene must have been like in the mid to late 1940s.

All in all this collection is an excellent compilation of one of the true greats of modern jazz.

5 out of 5 stars OUT AND UP TO THE STARS...................2006-10-22

JAZZ CRITICS BACK IN THE FIFTIES AND EVEN NOW CERTAINLY HAVEN'T "SET THE PACE" BY FAILING TO RECOGNIZE THIS ALBUM, BUT PARTICULARLY COLTRANE'S EXTENDED IMPROVISATION ON "IF THERE IS SOMEONE LOVLIER THAN YOU" AS ONE OF THE GREATEST JAZZ SOLOS OF ALL TIME - ON TENOR OR ANY OTHER INSTRUMENT FOR THAT MATTER. COLTRANE SOUNDS AS IF HE IS SIX A HUNDRED FOOT TALL GIANT PLAYING AN ENORMOUS MARK VI - BLOWING OUT A SHIMMERING, GLITTERING
AVALANCHE OF SOUND OUT AND UP TO THE STARS. LYRICALLY, THIS IS A MASTERWORK OF COLTRANE'S USE OF MELODIC FRAGMENTS FOR AN UNEQUALLED DISPLAY OF INTERWOVEN THEMATIC TEXTURES INTERPOSED WITH HIS VOLCANIC "SHEETS OF SOUND". THIS PIECE DEMANDS A THOUSAND LISTENING SESSIONS - ONCE YOU'RE HOOKED EACH ONE WILL BE A MAGNIFICENT ROLLER COASTER RIDE - WHERE EACH TIME YOU WILL PASS THRU SOME NEW PATHWAY UP AN OVER - DOWN AND THRU THE MOST INTENSE AND BEAUTFUL MUSICAL STORM YOU ARE LIKELY EVER TO HEAR - SURPRISED NONE OF THE SO CALLED CRITICS HAVE BEEN ON THIS RIDE.

5 out of 5 stars One of my personal favourites...and the sound..........2003-10-15

This time, I get to follow Mr. Adams and to say that I may like this a little better than he does! I totally agree that this is an underrated, relatively too-obscure, and completely accessible Coltrane recording. Coltrane with Red Garland's trio is nearly perfect. And the recording is SO good, it sounds like it was already re-mastered. That's Rudy Van Gelder. Something about Red Garland and the rhythmic setting (even when another horn is present) seems to bring out the best in Trane, to my ear: always romantic, accessible, and sharp - never too far out there. Yes, this is a pivotal year for Trane - 1958 - but there is no restlessness on this one. For those who are discerning Trane lovers, this one is right on the money. His next recording - "Standard Coltrane" - is also 5 star.

4 out of 5 stars Unfairly obscure accessible Coltrane disc..........2003-05-05

"Settin'" was recorded on a single day in March of 1958 at the now famous Rudy Van Gelder studio in New Jersey. For some reason, Prestige apparently did not release this on vinyl until 1962. Perhaps that's why this title seems so little known in the Coltrane catalogue. The four songs here take 41 minutes to unfold, and all of them are enjoyable. Like his "Soultrane" and "Lush Life" releases, from the same era, the saxophone genius was mostly doing standards written by others, and being creative with his horn while not detouring into dissonance or the avant-garde mode which was to come six or seven years down the road. If, like me, you like this tamer Coltrane, don't hestitate to invest in this CD if you can afford it. It starts off with a nearly 10-minute version of the slow lovelorn lament "I See Your Face Before Me." That song got some attention in that era because Sinatra included it in his legendary album of 1955, "In the Wee Small Hours". Earlier this week I played Frank's vocal a couple of times, then Coltrane's instrumental. Both are high art. One wishes John and Frank could have been paired for at least one record the way Coltrane and Johnny Hartman were a few years after "Settin' the Pace" came out. Really, friends, the whole CD is nice and worth owning. Not a landmark like "Giant Steps" which is total excitement, but I rate this romantic release a little better than "Lush Life" and a tiny bit below "Soultrane." Red Garland and Paul Chambers and Art Taylor each have nice moments with piano, bass and drums here as well.

4 out of 5 stars Spreading his wings.......2000-08-26

This release captures Trane during a key year of development, 1958. Like the great release of the same year, "Soultrane," "Settin' the Pace," shows how far his playing had come during three years of work with Miles Davis, and it probably deserves an extra half star above 4. While it is not quite as impressive as the 5-star "Soultrane," it still provides plenty of self-assured and passionate playing from one of our greatest artists.

Trane's unswerving command of his instrument is demonstrated most effectively on Jackie McLean's Monkish "Little Melonae." The 14-minute ride is kicked off by a fine piano solo from Red Garland, and then Trane takes off on one of his incredible "sheets of sound" improvisations, spurred on not only by Garland's comping but by the muscular bass of Paul Chambers. Terrific performance.

The mellower side of Coltrane is also in good supply, particularly on "I See Your Face Before Me." Trane treats this gentle ballad with respect, producing a lovely sound while he carefully lays out each note with clarity. It's romantic music for grownups: full of genuine emotion and meticulous attention to a beautiful melody. Red Garland's patented block chording adds to the beauty of the performance.

Coltrane's Prestige discography is large, and some of the recordings are much better than others. If you are adding his Prestige stuff to your collection, "Settin' the Pace" should be one of the first choices.

4 out of 5 stars pretty darn good.........1999-10-12

i found this album lying in the bargain bin at a music store and thought i'd give it a try (hey, even bad coltrane is interesting).. to my surprise, it wasn't bad at all. chambers (b) and taylor (d) are real sold (chambers in particular - he's laying down grooves as fat and even here as he was on 'Kind of Blue'), red garland on piano isn't that exciting but his sprinkly, syncopated chording complements coltrane well, and coltrane is really cookin'.. moving between lyrical flow to crazy bop stuff, and all accessible - unlike some of his later stuff, you don't have to be at all into free jazz to enjoy this disc. all the players work well together, solo well.. it's a real treat.

This CD gathers all of Dexter Gordon's recordings as a leader for Savoy, with one session each from 1945 and 1946 and two from December 1947. Gordon had already worked in the bands of Lionel Hampton, Louis Armstrong, and Billy Eckstine, and he was among the very first players to adapt the innovations of Charlie Parker to the tenor saxophone, creating his own voice out of an amalgam of Parker and Lester Young. Gordon's sound was already his own, a harder-edged tenor sound with very little vibrato, and there's evidence as well of the striking harmonic imagination that would later influence John Coltrane. Ballads like "I Can't Escape from You" and "Dexter's Mood" show Gordon's romantic side, but it's the bop tunes that most clearly chart his rapid evolution.

Two of bop's most brilliant--and doomed--players make substantial appearances here. Pianist Bud Powell is present on the eight takes from 1946, adding Tatum-esque filigree to the ballad and driving, incandescent play to the other tracks, prodding, testing, and usually exceeding the horns. Trumpeter Fats Navarro appears on the final session, along with composer-pianist Tadd Dameron, and it's once again apparent that he was Dizzy Gillespie's only serious rival among bop trumpeters.

Whether it's the presence of a working band or growing maturity, Gordon is at his best on "Index" and "Dextivity," with a relaxed drive and full command of his substantial ideas. While most of the tracks are around three minutes--the compressed jolts of bop energy dictated by the limited playing time of the 78--"Settin' the Pace," originally divided over two sides, is nearly six minutes. It's a saxophone chase with baritonist Leo Parker, in the same vein that Gordon explored to great acclaim with Wardell Grey. The wealth of alternates includes several issued for the first time, among them tracks with Powell and Navarro. --Stuart Broomer

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars your most revolutionary music comes young.......2003-08-03

dexter had his share of problems -- drug arrests kept him out of circulation for 10 years, and he was celebrated for his comeback and his role in "'round midnight." but if you want his young, unvarnished, revolutionary sound, this is the place to go. young dexter is working through the fast, fresh changes of bebop on the tenor saxophone, at a pace that no one thought a horn deeper than an alto could handle. "long tall dexter" is a remake of charlie parker's "now's the time;" "i can't escape from you," is an uncommonly mature treatment of a ballad; "dexter digs in" -- all three takes -- is full of restless energy and power. for dexter, this is his armstrong's "hot fives," monk's blue note; bird's savoy and dial. it doesn't get 5 stars because i'm a tough grader.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Dexter Gordon CD!.......2001-03-01

Over 70 minutes of finely recorded bop and blues by tenorist extraordinaire Dexter Gordon. His full beautiful tone is both relaxing and exhilarating. These recordings are from 3 dates for Savoy in 1945-1947. (The CD notes that this is not a thorough collection of EVERY track cut for Savoy, alternative takes from two sessions are not included. Only Dexter "completists" should be concerned.)

Of the 23 selections, 11 include either Max Roach or Art Blakey on drums. Fats Navarro brings his wonderfully rounded sound to six cuts recorded in 1947, and Tadd Dameron plays piano on eleven. What's surprising, however, is not the great playing of the jazz legends here, but the work of not as celebrated musicians such as Leo Parker on baritone sax and Sadik Hakim on piano. This is great bop playing which will get you moving!
