Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Woody Shaw was one of the great trumpeters, combining saxophone-like fluency with a sound that was capable of the subtlest expressive nuance. This set dates from 1983, and finds Shaw backed by a superb rhythm section of Cedar Walton on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Victor Jones on drums. It's an empathetic group, and the absence of other horns puts the emphasis clearly on Shaw's trumpet and flügelhorn. His conception of each tune flows naturally from theme to variations. His lyric gift shines on "There Is No Greater Love" and Walton's "When Love Is New," while there are real fireworks on his own "Spiderman Blues." --Stuart Broomer

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent performer.......2007-03-09

This plates are wonderful. I was charmed, and when I close my eyes now, I see scenes with American in Paris or Porgy and Bess but my favorite piece of music is Rhapsody in Blue. It's more than excellent is fantastic. Jack Gibbons perfectly feels the unique tone Gershwin's music, the mixture rythms of jazz with influences of impressionists and clear and beauty melodies.
    I'm fascinating.

    5 out of 5 stars A unique project.......2006-11-23

Gibbons' undertaking is unique: to reconstruct and then execute and record the note-for-note playing of Gershwin as documented on the composers' piano rolls, sound recordings and certain published arrangements. I agree with the reviewer who points out that the result is like a library and not a recital you sit back and listen to (or get up and dance to). In fact Gibbons does some editing of his "library" now and then, and clearly documents it in his liner notes: in some reconstructions he augments accompaniment effects and even the melodic line itself. I don't mind that at all, especially as Gibbons scrupulously accounts for such tampering in his liner notes; but it seems to me that it is in this area of "tampering" that Gibbons the artist is asserting himself...which of course undermines the "library", the "historical archive": you have to search and read a bit to find out when you're hearing only Gershwin and when you're hearing some added Gibbons. I don't mind; Gibbons is a remarkable artist in his own right, not merely an impeccable documentarian. For sheer generosity of production Gibbons' Gershwin must also be unique: 4 cd's, scholar-level liner notes (yes, you need a magnifying glass to read them), and rock-bottom bargain price.

5 out of 5 stars Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12

First: this is 4 high-end produced cd's (in low-end jewel cases) for the price of 2. The liner notes of all 4 cd's are condensed in a booklet of microscopic print, so you may need to spend the savings on a magnifying glass. MONEY WELL SPENT.
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.

    5 out of 5 stars Definative.......2005-07-23

Here's the whole Gershwin catalog at a great price... Five plus hours of bliss. Definately five stars!

Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.

5 out of 5 stars Setting the Standards.......2002-09-10

Woody Shaw had his up and downs in his recording career, but this album is one of his finest displays. He carves out beautiful lines through the various standards on this recording, epitomizing how he comes from the same vibe as Freddie, but is so much more thoughtful and relies on his technical prowess less than his more famous peer.

This album needs studying - its true worth only surfaces to the listener after several plays, but when it does it never fails to bring something new to your ears. A master class in how to use pentatonics and fourths in a subtle, uncliched way.

3 out of 5 stars This jazz duo swings with the best........2002-02-07

Julie and Kelly have elevated the Tuck&Patti formatt of jazz guitar and vocals to a new level. I was impressed and I could hear how much this duo has grown over the years. I was most impressed with their connectivity between improvation and traditional blend style of jazz. Although the only pit fall on the cd is when traditional jazz balads have been given a dramatic finish. Most needed a fade out. Overall this a great cd and I would recommend it to friends.

5 out of 5 stars Naked - Davis and Dow.......2001-08-12

For all of us who remember June Christy and Stan Kenton in "Duet" of the late 1950's, or those who have discovered them, or those who should, Davis and Dow's "Naked" is the new millenium's discovery of what jazz should be. Julie Davis' voice is equally mellow and scat, whatever she wants it to be. Her command over her voice is phenomenal. Kelly Dow's guitar is the perfect accompaniment that has will of its own when they want it to with solos that leave us wanting to hear more of him. Listen to the wonderfully innovative and delightful lead-in to the old classic, Julie London's "Fever," then settle into the sensual sounds of Davis and Dow. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Davis & Dow are Sensational!.......2001-04-29

The first time I heard them was when they were performing to a crowd of two on an open air bandstand at the Riverwalk in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

After telling them that they were even better than they thought they were, I invested in their first CD.

When they got back from an extended gig in Japan, I invited friends to hear them perform at the Bar Amici Restaurant on Las Olas Blvd. The food was excellent, but Davis & Dow were even better. I was happy to buy a copy of their new release. They keep learning and get better every time I hear them.

When I met them at the restaurant and complimented them on their performance I found out that Julie was the talker. Kelly speaks volumes with his guitar and is content to let Julie make new friends.

If you like to hear the standards done in a jazz style that is reminiscent of Ella, June Christie, Anita O'Day, and Lee Wiley, don't miss Davis & Dow.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz Shines Brightly on "NAKED".......2001-03-23

Davis and Dow's place in jazz history will be most definately assured with their new release "NAKED". Blessed with a wonderfully flexible voice and a natural feeling for swing, jazz, blues and scatt ,unmatched {only by Ella}jazz singer Julie Davis and Kelly Dow on guitar give spectacular performances here on "Naked".Given the subtleties of such material, Davis and Dow try on many different roles, much like actors. The arrangements of each song are so incredible you will encounter many shadings of mood. Always interested in the clear articulation of the words of a song, Davis and Dow graviated to the best lyricists . Julie's vocal qualities served her well on the ballads. "Passion Flower" and "What are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life" are exquisite proof of how well the Davis and Dow magic works. Dow's accompaniment on "Take Five" is pure genius and Davis's scatt is breathtaking! All tracks are equally brilliant due to the manner of how the songs are treated. Each one is like its own masterpiece. The most striking interpretation of "My Favorite Things", I have ever heard! Dow's original "Deja Vu" is haunting. I am eager to watch Davis and Dow's career grow as time and life experience can only enhance their God given gifts. Dont miss these great artists!

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Unique!!.......2001-03-20

This CD is wonderfully refreshing! I was really delighted when I heard all of their unique arrangements. I absolutely love Julie's crisp, clean voice! She is truly a purist with a totally fresh style all her own. And Kelly's guitar playing is innovative and powerful. Together they have produced a great collection of favorites. This couple is doing very well and I look forward to hearing as much new material as they can muster. And if any of you live in Florida, go SEE THEM LIVE...they are absolutely mesmerizing!
