5 out of 5 stars An absolutly amazing artist!.......2000-05-15

Inessa Galante's work brings tears to my eyes every time. Not only is she my idol and one of the most amazing artists out there today, but also an extremely nice person. I had the pleasure of working with her in a production of La Boheme and I was blown away. Her performance on this recording was breath taking!

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected pleasures.......2000-01-22

You might, coming across a CD entitled 'The Tchaikovsky Experience', expect yet another compilation of over-familiar favourites - not so here. While Tchaikovsky's ballets and symphonies are in danger of over-exposure, his ten operas are, with two exceptions, unfamiliar.

This beautifully planned recital provides extracts from every one of them - even an abandoned one (Undine). Four singers: two sopranos, tenor and baritone perform a selection of arias and duets. Inessa Galante delivers an engrossing and very emotional performance of the most familiar item here, the Letter Scene from 'Eugene Onegin', she enters fully into Tatyana's world. She is just as good in an extended duet from Tchaikovsky's last opera 'Iolanta', partnered ably by tenor Alexander Fedin - and she darkens her voice convincingly for a plangent account of Joan of Arc's aria from 'The Maid of Orleans' - traditionally mezzo territory. Marina Shaguch (familiar from many recent Kirov Opera recordings)has a brighter timbre, which suits Undine's delectable song, and possibly the most ravishing aria on the disc, that from 'Vakula the Smith', a rustic comic opera that cries out for a modern recording - it is almost totally unknown and contains some of Tchaikovsky's most delicious music. She is less involving in the final scene and deranged lullaby from 'Mazeppa', which doesn't pack the necessary punch here, though it is beautifully sung. Alexander Fedin is less consistent, best in the familiar excerpts from 'The Queen of Spades'. Sergei Leiferkus has the least to do, but does it well, though his account of Yeletsky's aria from 'The Queen of Spades' does not bear comparison with Pavel Lisitsian's classic account. But it is the wealth of unfamiliar music here that counts, and with sparkling support from the Royal Opera House orchestra and Neemi Jarvi, this disc is a winner, and should be essential listening for every Tchaikovsky lover.

Don't be put off by the most awful jacket design - a green tinged Sloane-y young gel(presumably Tatiana)who looks as if she's strayed in from a photoshoot for 'Brides' magazine. Ridiculous, inappropriate and unimaginative, but we all know better than to judge a CD by its cover, don't we?

5 out of 5 stars Inessa is a big star. I love her voice!.......1999-08-31

Chaikovski's music requires a very emotional performance. Inessa Galante delivers a beautiful, warm, and thoughtful experience!

She's a famous star of Latvian Opera and a well-known european artist.

5 out of 5 stars Massage Music.......2007-03-29

I buy anything from this artist. His music is probably the best I have found to use when I am giving a massage. I am a massage therapist, and in my mind, the background music I use is about 30% of the effectiveness of the massage, so I always try to use music that will calm, soothe , and help relax my clients. The work of Michael Hoppe always does the trick.

5 out of 5 stars A fairytale opera.......2002-01-17

At last there is a chance to hear the magical opera, Cherevichki, in a modern recording. And an excellent one. I warmly recommend every operafan and operadirector! to get acquainted with this seldomly performed but most theatrical and surprisingly beautiful opera.
The lyrical Eugen Onegin and the dramatic Pique Dame are well-known to most people, and many also appreciates the elegical, almost flegmatic Yolanta and the more robust but still beautiful Mazeppa. But Cherevichki, which is musically related to the fresh and spirited Nutcracker though more grotesque than the ballet, is still comparetively unknown in the west. It is, however, probably only a matter of a short time before it will be played in any adventurious operahouse anywhere in the world.
The opera consists of many individual scenes with lots of appeal. After the brillant ouverture there is a wonderful parlando-scene between an imp and Vakula, the smith's mother, apperently a witch. Tchaikovsky at his most humourous! Consequently there are beautiful arias for the obligatory tenor and soprano, splendid chorus-scenes and marvellous stagemusic describing a fairytale landscape full of snow and undines.
This live-recording is ravishingly conducted by Rozhdestvensky and all the roles are splendidly sung and performed by the russian cast, though I find the first scene more charmingly grotesque on the older recording conducted by A. Melik-Pashayev.
This opera adds another, lively!, facet to Tchaikovsky's works, while we are waiting for a new recording of his more problematic, The maid of Orleans.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2004-06-01

"Cocktails At Eight" is a collection of twelve original and three cover tunes played as piano solos and small ensemble pieces. Free and improvisational, Hilton's style incorporates jazz, classical, and new age elements, creating strong and sensitive musical lines that feel effortless. One of the reviews I read said, "She's satin and silk with a touch of denim," and that seems very appropriate. Many of the pieces are elegant and graceful, and others are more bluesy and fun. I really like this album!

What caught my ear first was Hilton's excellent arrangement of Paul Desmond's "Take Five." Joining Hilton on piano is Tal Bergman on drums and Reggie McBride on bass. The trio is true to the original, creating a mellow groove. I love "Seduction," a slinky blues solo with lots of sparkling trills and runs all over the piano - fun and funky! Duke Ellington's "Echoes of Harlem" is another ensemble piece with piano, bass, and drums, and is also a standout. The walking bass line on the left hand and bluesy melody on the right are infectious, with the bass and drums staying in the background, adding to the dark, smokey mood. "Kilimanjaro" is a bit more classical and pensive. The melody is simple, elegant, and rather sad, but very beautiful. "August 1999" is a graceful, introspective piece with a flowing quality. "Candlelight" is quiet and mysterious. "Moon River" is played by the trio - an easy, gentle arrangement with heartfelt emotion. "Waterfall" is a lighter, more rhythmic piece than most of the other piano solos. I really like this one, too - it sounds like a lot of fun to play! With a compelling bass line on the left hand, the right hand skips around like water bouncing off of rocks. "I'm On My Own" closes the collection with a beautiful ballad. This time the ensemble includes piano, violin, cello, and woodwinds, so it is more of a chamber piece, reminding me a bit of the flowing elegance of Suzanne Ciani's music with her band, The Wave.

"Cocktails At Eight" is the first of Lisa Hilton's albums that I've heard, but I'm hooked! I love her versatility and the ease with which she changes styles and moods. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy Cocktails at Eight.......2003-11-04

Rarely does an selection of music captivate ones interest so that your enjoyment intensifies each time you listen to the pieces. As you familiarize yourself with the CD you look forward to the next time you will be sitting by the fire, reading a book or merely relaxing with "Cocktails at Eight".

The melodies have a sophisticated aura to them, a light jazz that exemplifies "Easy Listening". This CD is one that you will never tire of and is a great accompaniment to all types of entertaining. Weather it be quiet dinner parties or a solo night of enjoying music.

Ms. Hilton is an accomplished pianist and composer. I look forward to future albums.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2004-09-03

"Jazz After Hours" is an ensemble recording featuring Lisa Hilton on piano, Eric Marienthal on sax, Tal Bergman on drums, and Reggie McBride on bass. Of the eleven tracks, seven are originals and four are arrangements of jazz classics. I have to admit that I prefer Hilton's solo piano work, but this is a really nice selection of pieces that place an emphasis on fun. "Malibu" has been receiving extensive airplay in the US and abroad, and recently reached the #1 position on the Top 20 SIngles World Jazz Chart. On most of the tracks, the piano is part of the ensemble rather than the lead, but the band is excellent and Eric Marienthal really cooks on sax.

"Malibu" is an upbeat and joyous tribute to Hilton's seaside hometown. Known for its carefree surfers and sunny beaches, this piece captures that kind of party spirit. Bill Evans' "Waltz For Debby" is a beautiful trio for piano, bass, and drums - soulful and sensuous, and a great arrangement. "Nocturne" was inspired by Chopin and is a standout. Cool, dark, and slinky, it does indeed sound like the middle of the night. "All That" is another favorite, and sounds like a blast to play. Hilton and Marienthal pull out the stops and really let loose. Duke Ellington's "Azure" is again piano, bass, and drums, and is leisurely and "bluesy." "When We Met" is the only solo piano piece, and I love it. Composed in the style of a standard, it is both old and new, and has a beautiful, romantic feeling. "Listen to Your Heart" closes the CD on a gentle, intimate note.

"Jazz After Hours" is a great album for relaxing and reenergizing, a backdrop for an intimate dinner, or even good party music.

5 out of 5 stars Lisa Does It Again!!.......2004-06-02

Her latest album contains the same formula as her last release. Assisted by veteran Saxophonist Eric Marienthal, she continues her venture of providing great, classic Jazz. "Malibu" starts the CD off right with an assist from Bassist Reggie McBride and Drummer Tal Bergman. Her covers of the Miles Davis classic, "All Blues" and Duke Ellington's, "Azure" gives fans of 50's & 60's Jazz something to appreciate. My personal favorites were "Listen to Your Heart" and "All That". The old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies to this CD. Lisa definitely sticks to the same old routine and she scores another winner!

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2005-07-10

"Seduction" is one of Lisa Hilton's too rare solo piano albums (most of her recordings are jazz ensembles). Ensemble recordings are fine, and I enjoy a lot of them, but I love the intimacy of solo piano - especially from an artist with Lisa Hilton's exceptional playing style. The music ranges from smooth ballads to mellow jazz to full-blown blues, and twelve of the thirteen tracks are original.

"Evening Song" opens the album on a quiet, peaceful note. Almost a lullaby, the gentle melody envelops the listener with warmth. Next is the slinky, down-and-dirty "Seduction," which I first heard on Hilton's more recent "Cocktails At Eight" CD. I really love this piece! "Close To My Heart" is a gentle ballad that has lyrics in the liner notes that are not sung on the recording, but you can always sing along! "29 Palms" is a dark, earthy piece with an interesting rhythm that slips a beat here and there, giving it an edge. I really like this one, too! "Angry Again" returns to the blues style that Hilton does so well. Lyrics for this song are also in the liner notes for those who are so inclined. They also explain why the music goes from fiery to conciliatory and pleading. The one cover tune is a straightforward arrangement of "The Way You Look Tonight." It's a really nice arrangement, but seems a little out of place. "Waterfall" is a beautiful, sparkling piece that's a bit more abstract than some of the other pieces. The infectious rhythm suggests the flow of water while the right hand displays the more random splashes. This is also a favorite! "Desire" is slinky and sexy. "Remember" closes the album with a darkly introspective piece that is wistful, kind of sad, and very beautiful.

"Seduction" is a great album for active listening, but would also provide a sophisticated backdrop for other activities, a party, or an intimate dinner. Very enjoyable!

      5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2005-05-03

This is a great CD. Lisa's music has been the backdrop of so many pleasant interludes for me. It's wonderful when having cocktails with friends or relaxing with loved ones and I highly recommend it for yoga.

5 out of 5 stars From Solo Piano Publications.......2006-08-09

"Midnight In Manhattan" is jazz pianist Lisa Hilton's eighth CD release, and features seven original compositions and four cover tunes. Backed by Bobby Militello on sax, John Friday on drums, and Reggie McBride on bass, some of the tracks really cook and others cool it down to sweet and sultry. Lisa Hilton successfully straddles the line between smooth jazz and the more "out there, anything goes" route jazz often takes. In the studio, the acoustic instruments were recorded without overdubs or similar effects, and the musicians worked without sheet music or chord charts on Hilton's original pieces, keeping an edge on the improvisational spirit. Possibly Hilton's best album to date, the music is strong and sensual, and Hilton keeps the piano at the forefront more than on some of her previous ensemble releases (yea!).

The CD opens with an arrangement of "Hit the Road, Jack" that is inventive enough that I didn't recognize it until I read the liner notes. Then it's obvious, but the sax and piano improvisations and the emphasis on the blues (something Hilton does especially well) make this an especially good cover. "City Streets" is also a favorite with its playful piano and slinky bass and percussion. Good stuff! The title track was inspired by a walk back to her hotel after a jazz concert on a chilly January night, savoring the energy that is unique to New York. Militello's sax is especially effective on this track, creating a mood that is dark but very alive and vibrant. Henry Mancini's classic, "Moon River," is a lovely duet for piano and sax that is leisurely and sensuous - beautiful! "Sunday Morning" is warm, cozy, and blissfully lazy. Another classic, "Over the Rainbow," is a piano solo played in a style reflective of the era when it was created (the 1930's). "The Easy Life" picks up the tempo a bit, but is still very peaceful and relaxed. "Late Night" is another wonderful piano solo that is reflective, a little dark, and very sensual.

"Midnight in Manhattan" is a great album from start to finish! Highly recommended!
