There's an intuitive branch of chamber jazz that began with Lennie Tristano and continued through to Paul Bley, Keith Jarrett, and the Swedish trio E.S.T. Israeli-born pianist Anat Fort is the latest iteration of an approach that's based in intuitive interplay and an austere, Bauhaus sense of dynamics. Echoes of Keith Jarrett circa the mid 1970s and his band with Charlie Haden, Dewey Redman, and Paul Motian reverberate throughout her ECM debut. The comparison is perhaps more facilely drawn because Motian is her drummer on this session. (He also happened to play with Tristano.) He's joined in his colorfully shaded and fluid rhythms by bassist Ed Schuller, who has a Mississippi-deep sound, anchoring even the freest improvisations on the disc. Most of the tracks consist of this trio, but they're joined by clarinetist Perry Robinson on a few songs like "Chapter Two," and those head for the hinterlands of avant-garde playfulness. Songs like "Just Now, Var. I" have that mix of stateliness and gospel chords that Jarrett employed at the time. On the other hand, "Just Now, Var. II," rendered solo, could have dripped from the pen of Annette Peacock, the early muse and composer for pianist Paul Bley, with whom Fort studied. Fort is a pianist of melodic gifts who can also play the angles of abstract expression as she does on the solo piece, "Chapter One," but she shares Keith Jarrett's gift for deeply integrated ensemble play, which shines on tracks like the freely played "As Two/Something 'bout Camels" and the cloudy moods of "Not the Perfect Storm." This is Anat Fort's second album, and she's quietly establishing herself as a composer of graceful beauty and an improvisor of daring exploration. --John Diliberto

Album Description

A Long Story is Anat Fort's debut release on ECM, and is comprised entirely of her original compositions, with one joint effort between Fort and Perry Robinson. From the very first track, the standard-in-the-making "Just Now Var. I," Fort's attractively melodic and Eastern-flavored jazz writing is apparent and ECM's storied history of piano-led groups (think Keith Jarrett, Bobo Stenson, and Tord Gustavsen) continues with the addition of this fine quartet. The "sidemen" on A Long Story are three well-known jazz veterans, led by the great Paul Motian on drums. Perry Robinson makes his ECM debut here and Ed Schuller rounds out the group on double-bass.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Quite nice.......2007-07-19

Whiel having the typical ECM sound that can be slightly unnerving, even if I like it a lot, this is a very nnice CD with intimate piano pieces by Anat Fort.

4 out of 5 stars Already one of the years' best!.......2007-04-27

"A Long Story" marks the ECM debut of the Israeli-born New York-educated
pianist Anat Fort. And what a great debut it is. Although it is only April it seems destined to be one of the year's 10 best jazz albums.
Fort's compositions run the gamut from wistful to whimsical. She can be introspective and contemplative without becoming dreary or cumbersome. The cohesiveness of this project is further enhanced by the rhythm section that not only provides the essential foundation but also the framework for many of the compositions. But what else would you expect from living legend Paul Motian?
While this album was not recorded at the ECM studios, it nonetheless has that characteristic ECM sound. Open. Spacious. Subdued. The only question is why this took 3 years to be released since it was recorded in early 2003. But, in the end, who cares? A great album all the way around. One can only hope that Fort's future efforts will build upon this impressive beginning.

5 out of 5 stars Almost too subtle for me to catch the vibe . . ........2007-03-18

. . . but I finally did. This disc demands close listening. Its nuanced pleasures, from Fort's gently slurred piano notes and brilliant pedal deployment, to Ed Schuller's deep, woody bass played with precisely bent notes and sly overtones, to Paul Motian's magical, dancing cymbals and sprung time, reveal themselves only to those who pay attention. Casual listening makes it almost sound--heaven forbid--mundane.

Only after easing into its subtle sensibilities do the furtive melodies began to reveal their hidden beauty and rigor. And just when one gets used to the finely tuned piano-trio concept, enter Perry Robinson, who has a unique approach and beguiling tone on clarinet, to lift the session to new heights. What seemed an entirely lovely outing suddenly turns mysterious, and sometimes even scary, starting with the very Charlie Haden-ish "Lullaby," continuing with the spooky "Chapter Two," a Fort/Robinson duet, and resurfacing whenever Robinson joins the proceedings ("Not a Dream?" with its magical-realist soundscape, "As Two/Something 'Bout Camels," certainly the most ambitious number on the disc, drenched in longing until, about midway through, a huge angst surfaces with Robinson's skittish clarinet and Schuller's brave bass solo, soon resolving into a more familiar-yet-still-alien territory, Robinson playing obsessive ocarina over delicate piano chords, and, finally, "Just Now, Var. III," with such palpable Sehnsuct that the listener almost keels over from longing).

Two solo piano numbers underscore Fort's understated genius, "Just Now, Var. II," with its delicate wistfulness, and "Chapter One," a study in quiet virtuosity, full of spiky melodies and faux-Romantic yearnings, all dolled up in gloriously ruminative wrappings.

As I say, you might be fooled by the apparent ease of execution that permeates this remarkable disc. But take the time to listen closely, and I think you'll agree that only a musician of the highest accomplishment could conceive and imbue such seeming ordinary music with such magic.

Highest recommendation.

This five-CD box set soundtrack to filmmaker Ken Burns's 10-part, 19-hour documentary Jazz spans nearly a century of jazz styles, from the martial rhythms of James Reese Europe to the soul-jazz of Grover Washington Jr. It includes time-tested classics like Benny Goodman's 1938 classic, "Sing, Sing, Sing"; John Coltrane's chanting 1965 immortal track, "A Love Supreme"; Billie Holiday's blue-ember ballad, "God Bless the Child"; and Ella Fitzgerald peeling off "A-Tisket A-Tasket." Bebop is represented by Charlie Parker's orchestral bop version of "Just Friends"; Thelonious Monk's nocturnal calling card, "'Round Midnight"; and Dizzy Gillespie's "Salt Peanuts" and "Groovin' High."

The jazz-instrumentalist-as-singer comes to life on Coleman Hawkins's "Body and Soul" and Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers' "Doodlin'." Clifford Brown and Max Roach's "I Get a Kick out of You" epitomizes the hard-bop era, while Miles Davis's "So What" stands as the modal masterpiece. The cool school is in session with Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan dishing out "Walkin' Shoes," and the Modern Jazz Quartet's soulful elegy "Django" straddles all the above musical orbits. As for Django Reinhardt, he's featured on "Shine" with the justly famed Le Quartet du Hot Club de France.

Louis Armstrong's "West End Blues" and "Potato Head Blues" and Duke Ellington's rousing rendition of Billy Strayhorn's anthem, "Take the A Train," and his moody "Solitude" show why they are the Olympian masters of this art form--and the most frequently featured artists in the series. Although Ken Burns tries bringing the music up-to-date with Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson, and two jazz-hip-hop-influenced tracks--Herbie Hancock's robotic "Rockit" and the French-language "Un Aige en Danger" by MC Solaar and bass legend Ron Carter--there are significant holes here. After Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman, the avant-garde period from the late 1960s to the 1980s is lacking. And aside from the bossa nova hit "Desafinado," Latin jazz is also missing. It's a tough task summarizing jazz in five CDs, and Burns has given us a vibrant and vivid multicolored aural portrait of the music. --Eugene Holley Jr.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Selection, An Odd Accompaniment to the Documentary.......2007-04-25

To chronicle the first six decades or so of American jazz in five CD's is an ambitious undertaking. Ken Burns pulled it off by making it the soundtrack to stories he wanted to tell. This made for heavy representation of songs from Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis easy choices. The documentary, in some ways, tells like an allegory of racism and civil rights in 20th century America, yet the soundrack includes white musicians like Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Dave Brubek and Benny Goodman in the CD selections. Brubek's inclusion is particularly notable after the documentary was so dismissive of "West Coast Jazz" - I don't even remember Take 5 being mentioned in the documentary. It would have been nice to include Bill Evans since every jazz pianist that followed him credited Evans as an influence, but his work as side man on "So What" is all we get. Herbie Hancock's Rockit is nowhere close to representative of his body of work. My main disappointment is that after Free Jazz and the like, jazz had nowhere left to go except backwards, yet the contemporary "pop" jazz at the end comes across as the latest and greatest thing yet. I respectfully disagree.

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Jazz.......2007-03-23

For those just getting into Jazz or just need a refresher course this is a great CD. I brought it for my husband who is a big Jazz fan and he just loves it and gets alot of use out of them.

5 out of 5 stars Ken Burn's Jazz CD.......2007-01-14

A great cd with many remastered original recordings of jazz greats. Each cd features a different jazz era, so one can select a jazz genre to suit one's mood.

5 out of 5 stars A must have.........2007-01-05

..for any jazz fan or music history buff. LOADS of content, hours and hours of great music.

5 out of 5 stars Good starter set for jazz beginners.......2006-02-22

This is a beautifully packaged 5 disc set highlighting some of the greatest jazz artists of all time. If you buy this set and are really excited about the sound and the masterful artists presented then, I highly recommend collecting the 22 discs of individual artists by Burns which showcase the popular and influential music of those artists. Having all of the Ken Burns Jazz editions is of course just a start but a good start into the world of jazz it will be.

With its dedication to Amadou Diallo and its poems covering subjects like reparations, slavery, and Mary J. Blige, Sekou Sundiata sets out to make "poems that are African American as bean pies and be-attitudes."

There's a righteous anger that permeates this disc, but its expression comes off more as a burning coal than a blowtorch--that is, instead of using the staccato rhythms and the relatively harsh vocals of the rappers, Sundiata's approach is more down-tempo, almost elegiac, and his voice is mellifluous, intimate, and warm. Not a huge voice like, say, James Earl Jones; rather, he uses a slow, seductive, clearly enunciated delivery to draw you into his words.

His interest is to write popular verse that functions both as dance music and serious spoken poetry. To him, it's not an either/or, you can do both-you can "dance and be still." While most people won't be dancing to this disc, the music-mostly keyboards, bass, and drum-is coolly competent, and his efforts to make poetry accessible are more than commendable. --Wally Shoup

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Powerful poetry.......2003-04-14

This cd has quite an unusual sound to it. Sundiata recites poetry while music --
mostly hip-hop, blues and funk (and a didjeridoo in track 9!) -- plays in the background.
Although a lot of the rhythms are funky, this is definitely not a record to dance or
to sit back and relax to-- the imagery is complicated and actually requires intellectual
concentration. The lyrics are often highly political and provocative, which I find
refreshing, especially since Sundiata is an accomplished poet, who can play with
words to create original and powerful images.

5 out of 5 stars Sundiata tells it like it is.......2001-07-17

Sekou Sundiata describes his work as "rhythm and news"; taking the beats of the street and using them as a backdrop for his poetry. Captivating and engaging songs tell the story of the African American people...

Sundiata's music echoes these sentiments. Whether a poem about slavery of the past or street life of the present, each one holds many striking truths. His style of layering spoken word over R&B and jazz with smooth vocals makes his work appealing accross many age groups and backgrounds. Fans of R&B, jazz, soul, folk rock, and poetry alike will embrace Sudiata's message; we can't live our lives today without remembering how we got here.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Blend.......2001-06-30

I've read the negative reviews of Sundiata's albums, and I can understand how his art is not for everybody. Nevertheless, if you are looking for something more from today's fairly shallow popular musical scene, the work of Sekou Sundiata is an excellent place to turn. His poetry blends perfectly with the music and draws the listener into the tribal rythm of his voice and the pulsing funk/blues accompaniment. I recently saw Sundiata open at an Ani Difranco show and his live performance is equally strong. An artist in all respects, Sundiata brings his message to the masses in a form that both pleases and inspires. For those who don't readily associate with poetry, the accompaniment offers an alternative in understanding the pieces on this album. I would highly recommend the work, but would suggest that you listen to some other more (but not quite) mainstream artists before attempting this sonic journey into the heart of Black America.

2 out of 5 stars Another unlistenable entry.......2000-07-09

Frought with the same kinds of musical mistakes as his first record. Combining poetry with music is always tricky business. A lot of people think it looks awkward, and more times than not, a lot of poets don't nail down the right music for their messgae. Sundiata continually hits us with stock folk/blues music that doesn't seem to go anywhere on its own, and the poetry suffers for it.

5 out of 5 stars Sekou Sundiata does it again........2000-05-01

Sekou Sundiata proves himself to be one of the most daunting artists able to combine poetry and music. His work continues in the tradition (set with extraordinary standards) by Langston Hughes with Charles Mingus, and later by Amiri Baraka with David Murray and Jayne Cortez and the Firespitters.

On Longstoryshort, Sundiata continues his deep previous explorations of American culture, racism, music and more-- and with great success combines them with music for life -- this CD has something for everyone -- great beats, memorable grooves and searing words. Poems about Harlem, about Nelson Mandela, about listening to Eric Dolphy with a past love. A blessing.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT for kids and parents, too!.......2007-04-13

I rarely write reviews, but just had to write about this amazing CD. It's not your typical kiddie-fare. My three kids (ages 4, 6, and 8) listen to this one over and over again, and my husband and I are hooked, too. We are not into jazz at all, but the songs here are so catchy and fun. It's cool enough that you could even play it at an adult function, and everyone would like it. In fact, I'm buying it for my mom, who is 64, because I know that she'll be singing it around the house in no time at all -- just like we do!

4 out of 5 stars cute for kids.......2006-08-13

I bought "Nicky's Jazz Lullabies" before my baby was born and loved it, so I decided to purchase this CD. My baby is a little young for it yet, but it fun to listen to while we play. The songs are cute and catchy, and I'm sure she'll love it eventually. I'm a jazz lover and hope to introduce her to some of the greats. Plus, in my opinion, this beats those cheesy kids songs any day.

5 out of 5 stars Everybody listens when they come to my house.......2006-07-25

This is a delightful program of songs that will please everyone with a garden of word-tune delights. My family and I loved it. We've played it over and over again for our friends. I bought it for several other children I know. They loved it. One 4-year-old is determined to learn every song. And that means learning lots of words, rhymes, syncopation, from great artists of American jazz culture. A verbal infusion for the young that is great fun.

5 out of 5 stars A gem!.......2006-01-23

I rarely write reviews, but I need to comment on how fantastic this compilation is. I have a four-year-old and an eighteen-month-old, and this CD is in heavy rotation at our house. My husband and I love the music at least as much as they do -- it's stylish and sets a great mood as we're making dinner and doing dishes. The kids love it too, needless to say. My four-year-old's favorites are Three Blind Mice (she loves when the farmer's wife squeaks that she'll give back the tails) and the final track by Peggy Lee (where she says the word *poop*, as in "party poop" -- endless laughter ensues). Ella Fitzgerald's A-Tisket, A-Tasket and Chew, Chew Your Bubblegum are priceless. All in all, I highly recommend this CD -- everyone will be happy to hear it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most under rated cd's on the market.......2005-05-03

This cd has won awards and delighted anyone who has listened. Why it isn't a requirement for kids learning about music, especially in the US where Jazz became Jazz, is beyond me. Perfectly charming songs from the best of the best who made Jazz, lots of passionate Jazz.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Pat Metheny's most ambitious solo project is also his most emotionally rich work as composer. A conceptual song cycle inspired by a tumultuous relationship frames the CD's alternately intense and introspective motifs with sweeping orchestrations and a shifting array of global musics spanning Asia, Europe, and the Americas. With a vast cast (including numerous Metheny Group members past and present), and Metheny himself marshalling percussion, horns, and keyboards as well as guitar and guitar synthesizer, Secret Story is by turns lush, heroic, heartbroken, at once epic and intimate. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars A worthwhile NEEDLE in the haystack if found.......2007-07-13

This is some of Pat Methany's best work especially "The Truth Will Always Be". It is very hard to find because it is out of print.

5 out of 5 stars A "secret" that EVERYONE should know! .......2007-06-05

I first heard this on cassette, stuck in my greenhouse during a 40 minute rainstorm! Fortunately I had suitable refreshment with me. I stayed long after the rain!!! Just listen to "Always an Forever" and pay the entrance fee! Then experience the whole. This album wakens the dead! It is an artist at his absolute peak with musicians who are there because they love the experience. I have expended loads on PM since hearing this album. All worth it...but this album is just SO SO good. When I listen to Secret Story I can conjure up the best times in my life..and that is worth the trip. WOW...what a triumph.
Thanks Pat!

5 out of 5 stars Re-release coming from Nonesuch.......2007-05-06

Don't muddle around trying to find a decent used, or overpriced new Geffen version of this cd. According to Pat's website, Nonesuch is working on a remastered version, as they did for Still Life (Talking) and Letter From Home.

1 out of 5 stars Shopping center music.......2007-01-10

One of my friend recommanded to me this album, as an introduction to Pat Metheny's music. He said it was a masterpiece, it seems that we don't have the same taste for music. I am not telling that he is wrong or that I am right, I just want to say that for me, this album is a shopping center music, the kind you heard in a Wal Mart. I am a music lover, I can appreciate almost anything but not this, I didn't experience any feeling or emotion while listening to it. As always, almost every rating here comes from fans of the artist, well, I am not and this just make a good balance to the whole thing. Thanks for reading.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-11-15

This cd is awesome, Pat just shows all sides of Jazz and Fusion. The melodies and textures. Incredible guitar work etc. This is a "MUST HAVE" if you are a fan of Pats work

4 out of 5 stars Little Richard on "I Feel Pretty" alone is worth the price........2007-06-08

Bought the CD through Amazon after hearing the Little Richard cut, "I Feel Pretty". Playing to type, LR gives one of his all time best performances. This cut alone is worth the price of CD.

The rest of the CD - fair (Tevin Campbell - poor song choice for his otherwise cooool voice) to good (Selena - expected better) to outstanding (Aretha)

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2006-12-17

Hearing Little Richard sing "I feel Pretty" is worth the price alone!
I found this to be a really neat way to introduce younger generations to this classic Broadway show.

I would love to see more R&B versions of Broadway hits.

    5 out of 5 stars A contemporary , edgy version worth buying!.......2005-09-19

This is a welcome, edgy adaptation of the classic songs of West Side Story. While the original version brought the concept of inner-city gangs to the consciousness of middle America, it was necessarily sterilized to make the message more palatable.

THESE versions of the familiar songs help us imagine the reality... the tension, the passion, the despair, and the love.

Fresh sounds for a new audience, this will be enjoyed by long-time West Side champions, as well.

    2 out of 5 stars Self-indulgent crap.......2004-05-07

There are a few high points to this disc which I suppose make it worth owning, but on the whole I find it extemely off-putting. "Somewhere" will bring tears to your eyes, but, alas, the producer seemingly didn't have the balls to tell AF to wrap it up--and so it becomes tedious, the opposite of tasteful self-restraint. And Patti LaBelle? Well, she is the patron saint of masturbatory yammering. On the other hand, Brian Setzer cuts loose on "Jet Song" in a way that'd be certain to put a smile on the face of Mr. Bernstein. There are some nice interpretations, but all in all, it has an inorganic, overproduced, Yamaha DX7'y sound.

5 out of 5 stars This is a real gem!.......2004-01-19

What a fabulous collection of re-interpretations of these classic songs!
I take my hat off to David Pack for doing such a fantastic job on the arrangements. I just can't praise this CD enough! I wish the label had done more to promote this recording! All the artists did an amazing job on their vocals and instrumentation.
My favorites are : Selena, Michael McDonald/ James Ingram, Kenny Loggins/Wynonna, Patti Austin, Aretha Franklin,Tevin Campbell and Trisha Yearwood.
This is a great CD for any collection. It's a terrific way to expose your children to real music!

Story's remarkable 1983 debut is the intellectual sister of Winston's December--a discursive series of solo piano improvisations that draw on the rich jazz harmony of pioneers like Bill Evans, Story's acknowledged chief inspiration. Yet Colors is almost minimalist next to Evans's more densely textured works--a spacious blend of polychords, breezy runs, and finely timed sustenutos, with an accessible spirit and memorable melodies--like the uplifting figure she plays over a simple descending bassline in "Hymn," or the indelible major-key main theme of "Things with Wings." More economical than Keith Jarrett, more florid and changeable than Winston, Story finds a compelling middle ground here between jazz harmony and classical technique, outside improv and sturdy songcraft, complex performance and inner stillness. --James Rotondi

5 out of 5 stars Liz Story is Terrific!.......2005-10-14

I have loved this album for years. Somehow in my moves in recent years, I lost it, so I just HAD to replace it! What joy she gives with her music! The energy is so positive, sensitive and just downright enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Whimsical reveries for solo piano.......2004-01-01

Redolant with imagination, fancy and emotion, the piano stylings of Liz Story are always appealing and the gentle, modern keyboard fantasies on "Solid Colors" are no exception. I normally prefer hearing the sounds of multiple instruments playing together, but Story's gentle, accoustic improvisations are so rich and varied that I find I really don't miss the backup band. Though this Narada CD tends to be classified in the nebulous, ever-widening net of "New Age" music, I'd categorize instead as light jazz, of the sort you'd expect to enjoy hearing over brunch at a fine city restaurant. It makes a great backdrop for a brunch of your own too, served warm at home for a few good friends. For more of Liz Story's stylish compositions and superb musicianship, check out her many other releases. If you enjoy her work, you may also like the work of pianist Keiko Matsui as heard on her albums "White Owl" and "Doll"--more orchestrated but equally whimsical and passionate.

    5 out of 5 stars My Mentor & Inspiration.......2002-02-24

Liz Story. What can I say? As a fellow pianist/composer, Liz put the joy & inspiration back into my playing. With her debut of Solid Colors, which, in my eyes, is her best of all, she gave me back a passion I lost over the years. When I serendipitously fell upon her first music anthology book, my heart actually began to race with excitement. Finally the songs I fell in love with, I could learn. Within a month, I had the entire book memorized & an entire new confidence came over me. Her style, rhythms, chord progressions et al, influenced & enlightened my playing. I also had the priviledge to see her in concert, hug her & have her sign my music anthology "Escape of the Circus Ponies". Pure acoustical genious. Thank you Liz. (check out my single CD "The Promise" while you're at it!)

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Solo Piano!.......2001-08-07

Solid Colors is a beautiful compilation of melodies, most of which where written by Story herself. This is one of her earlier works, released in 1982, and is also my favorite Liz Story cd. This cd ranges in a variety of emotion, which makes for a wonderful blend of music. Like George Winston, Liz Story is an anchor for Windham Hill Records. Bravo to Will Ackerman on his ability to showcase great talent (He is the founder of Windham Hill and incidently, produced this cd). She has a lovely flow to her playing. I listen to this cd over and over and over......For some reason, it reminds me of the Fall season. Maybe Solid Colors is a suitable autumn name afterall. If you aren't familiar w/ her music, this would make a great cd to start with. "17 Seconds to Anywhere" is another good one. I can tell you this, this is some great music to relax with and if you enjoy solo paino, then you'll love Solid Colors...any season, day or night!

5 out of 5 stars Great relaxing CD that I can't get enough of!.......2000-06-28

I'm a student and usually listen to music to help me relax while studying. This one is my favorite! The melodies are nonintrusive and memorable. The entire CD flows like a river from beginning to end. If you like this particular Liz Story CD, check ot Jims Chapell's "DUSK", very similar and also listenable over and over.
