5 out of 5 stars masterpiece.......2007-05-23

one of Mingus's best, to be sure, which means, of course, that it's one of the best in the history of American music. a bona fide classic, there's not much that I could say about Tijuana Moods that hasn't already been said elsewhere by other far more gifted critics than myself. at any rate, Shafi Hadi's alto and tenor work with Mingus, for one, was never better than it was on this session. worth owning in any release, but if you can track either down new and at a reasonable price, spring for the single disc or double disc RCA/Bluebird reissues from 1996 and 2001 which feature alternate takes of the whole session. while all these additional performances make for great listening, the composite alternate of Ysabel's Table Dance, in particular, is simply stunning, if not possibly superior to the master. buy and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Give this one a spin in your CD player.......2007-02-16

"Tijuana Moods" is one of Charles Mingus' favorites. Adding to the mystique, and for whatever reason, I've seen copies of this CD for sale new, unimported, as exorbitant prices. Amazon was reasonable, so I bought it before they raised it back higher. What do you get? Two CD's, one is the original LP. The other has uncut versions. The script is flipped with "A Colloquial Dream", which didn't come out with the original LP. The long version is on CD1, the short on CD2. The music starts with "Dizzy Moods", a swinging song which simply sounds like typical Mingus. If you like Mingus, you'll like "Dizzy Moods". "Ysabel's Table Dance" starts the Mexican portion of the album. There's a somewhat stereotypical castanet rhythm driving the song. The song sounds like turbulent, excited Mingus. There's vocalizing, presumably by Charles, off mic as the band churns through the fast sections. "Tijuana Gift Shop" has a fleeter melody, though like all of the songs the tempo slows and surges. "Los Mariachis" has horns parts that push and pull against each other in typical Mingusian fashion. "Flamingo", written by Anderson & Grouya, isn't as good as the Mingus compositions. "A Colloquial Dream" is another Mingus attempt at marrying verse and music. I haven't found one that really clicks yet. To summarize, it's a very good Mingus CD with a Mexican veneer. I say "veneer" because it sounds like a short impression of Mexico, like a visit to Tijuana. I'm sure if the band lived in Mexico for a year and spent a year learning and playing Mexican music, the Mexicanization would sound more convincing. Its lack of world music bona fides isn't a big knock on the very good CD. Better than "Mingus Ah Um"? No, but much better than "The Clown", which also came out in 1957.

Recorded in New York in 1957 (though not released until 1962), Tijuana Moods was, according to Mingus himself, "the best album I ever made." The music is a vigorous stew of Mexican rhythms and sophisticated post-Ellington arrangements, further invigorated by the soloing of trumpeter Clarence Shaw, trombonist Jimmy Knepper, and, particularly, saxophonist Shafi Hadi. Mingus's vision of Tijuana was clearly sensual, the music evoking strippers, frenetic street scenes, and heart-broken lovers. Making use of suitelike thematic material and various forms of counterpoint, the group sounds much larger than it is, and points toward Mingus's later experiments with form. The bristling sound and spirit of the music, however, are its primary attractions--a remarkable place where Mexican fantasy and hard bop meet. The second disc consists of outtakes and a long-lost remnant of the original recording session, "A Colloquial Dream," a poem about jazz narrated by Lonnie Elder and set to programmatic music by Mingus. It's a worthy addition to his legacy, but Tijuana Moods is the highlight here. --Wally Shoup

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent music for the ages!.......2004-11-16

No two ways about it.....Charles Mingus was one of the greatest American composers, regardless of genre, certainly greater than Copland and Gershwin, possibly even greater than Duke Ellington (though, of course, Mingus came partly from Ellington, and Ellington created a completely unique sound-world that had not existed in music before). By co-opting classical composition techniques, applying modal and Eastern scales and harmonies, and skilfully blending in improvised solos and ensembles that both complement and enhance the whole, he created an entirely new vision and sound-world that had not existed before...what he called "jazzical moods."

Tijuana Moods is one of the prime exponents of this style, and in some ways the most perfect. Mingus made sure of this by editing the working tapes himself in the RCA studios prior to release. I personally feel that the earlier, rejected take of "Los Mariachis" is superior to the commercial release, it is sadder and has more feeling though the playing is not as crisp. But no matter which takes you prefer, this is undoubtedly one of the landmarks in 20th century music. High recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Deserves to be much better known..........2004-02-27

If I ask a casual fan of '50's jazz to name the album I am about to describe, I know what the answer would be. First the description: A jazz genius creates a suite for large group, in which the influence of a foreign land is dominant. Of course, "Sketches of Spain" by Miles Davis and Gil Evans comes right to mind. But the description fits "Tijuana Moods" as well, and for my tastes, this Charles Mingus project is far more satisfying than the ultra-famous Davis record. Why is "Tijuana" superior? For one thing, it is lively, not melancholy. The Davis work has beauty, but is so unrelentingly somber that I seldom play it. "Tijuana Moods" is great fun, and worth hearing two times in a row. Mingus fanatics already own it, and for casual fans, the price of this package might be too high, but I found mine recently at a huge discount and I am delighted--so you might shop around. It would be hard for me to say this project is better than Charles' Columbia release "Mingus Ah Um"---although done only two years apart, with similar arrangements and some of the same musicians, the two records are quite different in effect. Both are super. The best part of this Bluebird double-disc set is the original "Moods" album issued in 1962 (although recorded in '57.)The first five songs on Disc One give the listener that experience. The rest of CD One are alternate takes of four of those tracks, worth hearing for sure. Disc Two presents more alternate takes, some false starts, some rehearsal or session chatter, and a long poem set to music, but not meant as part of the "Tijuana Moods" package. It also is worth hearing once or twice, but Disc One is the treasure--all 77 minutes are interesting. If you can buy Disc One separately, it might be a better value than the two-disc set. The booklet here is informative, the packaging colorful. Sound quality seems great to me. If you like other Mingus albums, you surely will love this one.

When it was first released in 1962, five years after it was recorded, Charles Mingus declared this musical account of a bacchanalian trip to the notorious border town the best record he ever made. That may be exaggeration, but it's certainly one of Mingus's best, a suite of pieces that gives form to the range of both his oversized emotions and his varied compositional techniques. The sextet, which sounds like a far larger group, includes several musicians who would become perennial Mingus associates--drummer Dannie Richmond and trombonist Jimmy Knepper--as well as the gifted trumpeter Clarence Shaw, an obscure musician with a distinctive lyricism. In its tumult, passionate breadth, and programmatic content, Tijuana Moods looks ahead to Mingus's later masterpiece, The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. --Stuart Broomer

2 out of 5 stars There are so many better Mingus albums..........2007-07-15

I have a feeling I really should like this more. After all, it is one of Mingus' most critically acclaimed discs, and the man himself declared it the best thing he ever did. However, I don't see it as an example of the breadth of Mingus' talent: there are plenty of other albums like that. This album has a "Spanish tinge", inspired by one of Mingus' trips to Mexico. And while I don't know much about Spanish music, the "Spanish tinge" seems more like stereotypical Hollywood bullfight-scene music than anything else: "Ysabel's Table Dance" (bet Mingus enjoyed that!) is a great example. Another one is "Los Mariachies". Neither really strike me as anything close to what I've heard of Spanish folk music - for my money, Sketches of Spain is much closer to the mark. So it's not Spanish music. Why's that reason to slap a 4 on an album Mingus himself had claimed all his life to love? Well, it's just not very good music, either. Like I said before, the music has a dated, Hollywood flavor to it that completely sinks the boat - take "Flamingo". However, there are two songs I really do enjoy on this album. One is "Dizzy Moods", a good bop song; the other is "Tijuana Gift Shop", with a lovably bizarre melody that I'd say sounded like a demented cross between the Simpsons and Rocky & Bullwinkle theme songs if both themes weren't penned years after this came out. Two of five... failure, in my eyes. I prefer A Um, Oh Yeah, At Antibes, Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, Pithecanthropus Erectus... the list goes on and on.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2006-06-10

Everytime I hear that breakdown in Flamingo it gives me an emotional choke up. Fantastic. The album as it stands is an introspective reflection, and we are merely observing bystanders. But it is this element which makes the recording so magical

5 out of 5 stars great mingus!.......2006-06-01

This is one of the best Mingus albums, for sure. Interestingly, I can appreciate the original edited versions of the tunes that were released in 1962, and can see why the edits were made. Of course it's good to hear the unedited versions and alternate takes, but the editing did lend the tunes a "perfection" quality. I guess that says something for album producers, and Mingus himself was quite an editor in his own right.

5 out of 5 stars "This is the best record I ever made" - Charles Mingus.......2006-01-26

Charlie Mingus is cited as being one of the most serious and hard-edged composers in jazz history. For Mingus to declare that 'Tijuana Moods' is the best album he's ever made is a serious statement, meant to be taken with much gravity. He was one of those composers who would write essays about their albums, and then print them on the record sleeves. He was very vocal and forward about his work, and was never shy or humble.

Charlie could have very well been fully accurate when he released this quote on the back of his album cover; this album is indeed a masterpiece! A slightly overlooked masterpiece, if I may add, that often gets overshadowed by other more critically-praised works such as 'Mingus Ah Um'. What is interesting and worthwhile about 'Tijuana Moods', in my view, is not just the superb craftsmanship of this series of pieces, but additionally the relatively unique playing and improvisation styles of the musicians. The term most would use to describe this kind of playing is 'lyrical', a description used to parallel the similarities between the horn player and a singer. Many instances of this lyrical style are evident on this album, most significantly found played by the trombone player and the trumpet player.

What makes lyrical styles so fantastic, especially in a Mingus piece, is that it gives the music a touch of accessibility, making this album a fabulous fusion between complex, innovative structuring, and easy-to-understand melodies and rhythms. In other words, this is a great place for a Mingus 'newbie' to begin his/her explorations. It allows the awe-inspiring insanity of Mingus' designs to be heard and accepted by a wider audience. And, of course, for the Mingus veterans, this album contains a chock full of instrumental goodness, such as the inevitable inclusion of abstract percussion instruments, and crazy, psychotic vocals thrown in there for good measure. But overall, this album is a brilliant creation, good for both the newcomers and the well-experienced. It would be easy to claim that this album is both a worthy first, or tenth, Mingus purchase.

This album comes highly recommended from me. Enjoy the music!!

-Andrew

5 out of 5 stars A tormented mind.......2005-02-24

This is not regular jazz. Mingus was one of the musicians that went beyond Jazz. Even beyond music itself. Music was just a way for spreading his message out: His inner feelings. The concepts which made impact on his life. And I guess (from what I've heard) it was a difficult one. That's one of the reason why his music is so complex and so full of sound. For one who still haven't catched the music of Mingus, it would seem too confusing and abstract. And even too annoying because all that vastness in sound in some of its passages (how couldn't you get lost at first hearing?). But after such a fierce momentum so and then he could suddenly relieve you with such a beautiful and pleasant landscape which I thought was only capable of being expressed by the Classical Geniuses. Such an overwhelming contrast. Speaking of that, Mingus played with tempo and rythm changes like Beethoven. No wonder why both were considered mind tormented. They tried to portray the complexities of their inner livings through music. And in my point of view they quite succeed on that.

He went to Tijuana in order to escape but made us a great favour: He shared with us what this trip was like and above all, what could had been. A strong mixing of sorrow, laughter, awe, sun and sandness. All of that with no order. Just like our own hearts. With no easy pattern to follow.

This is no ordinary music. So if you want just to find here great jazz, look somewhere else. I don't like the dubious feeling of myself and my then seemingly deplorable life after coming back from a trip to Tijuana where every sound is a journey to excitement. How I hate to feel like Mingus but not being able to express it so you can understand me!.
