I have only one objection to this album. She sings only 2 choruses of "To Keep My Love Alive" while the orchestra keeps playing the music over and over. A lyric like that, and they play just the music! There was plenty of time to put the whole lyric in. "If I Were You" (an imitated idea, most notably to my mind by Adams & Strouse in "All American") is a knock-out, and on this one she sings both verses (there is only one chorus). Highly recommended (if you can find it) anyway. "To Keep..." can be heard in it's entirety on other recordings, like on the revival cast recording of "Connecticut Yankee" by Vivienne Segal (on 2 releases!). Now if someone would just record the complete lyrics of "Mt. Greenery" and "Manhattan" - for a change!

5 out of 5 stars a hidden classic.......2006-10-07

Von Stade is in very fine voice on this CD, and her rendition of "My Funny Valentine" is one of the best ever, with a rich, expressive delivery. Her voice has sometimes been considered too operatic for pop material but on this she's just right. Other standouts are "Moon Of My Delight" and the playful "To Keep My Love Alive" but the whole album is solid.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful record.......2002-11-11

A wonderful record !! Mrs. Von Stade's voice is perfect. I also raccomend this recond because all the arrengments are recreations from the original shows.

5 out of 5 stars exquisite album.......2000-11-10

Contained in this CD are some of the most beautiful versions of the great timeless songs of Rogers and Hart. Coductor John McGlinn's orchestrations are flawless, as are Frederica's vocals. My favorites are 'I Didn't Know What Time It Was', 'My Funny Valentine', 'Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered', 'Atlantic Blues' and 'A Ship Without a Sail'. Every song is well done and everyone I have turned on to this album loves it.

5 out of 5 stars Delight-ful for all.......2007-03-24

After being out of print for a while, it's good to have this one back again. Art Taylor was a lyrical yet forceful drummer, though never overpowering a la the way Art Blakey could be at times. One never doubts his presence on any of these tunes, but his solos can be quiet and introspective (EPISTROPHY) and also explosive (MOVE). Trumpeter Dave Burns is a fine hard-bop player, very effective throughout the album (he really tears it up on MOVE, fully muted). Turrentine's strength and dynamism are major assets here, and Wynton Kelly's piano is a delight; it's fun to hear him go down a very Monkian road at the beginning of his solo on EPISTROPHY before changing his mind and doing his own thing. This is a very classy album, A.T.'s best, and a delight for any hard-bop fan of the classic Blue Note period.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyably 'Inauthentic,' Authentically 1950s Version.......2005-05-14

By rights, this 1955 version of John Gay's much-adapted 1728 'ballad opera' should sound antiquated beyond redemption: the musical version used is Frederick Austin's well-worn, prettified (& verbally expurgated) 1920 arrangement, subjected to the indignity of being blown up from chamber ensemble to full orchestra; Sir Malcolm Sargeant's tempi are impossibly 'inauthentic' (ie. slow); there are numerous cuts even beyond Austin's omissions; & the 2 separate casts, of opera singers & actors, recorded in different months, are not always convincingly 'matched up.' Yet it's one of the most enjoyable recordings I know of.
A quick scan of the cast list(s) will tell you why: the singers include Elsie Morison, John Cameron, Monica Sinclair, Ian Wallace, Owen Brannigan & Alexander Young & the actors Zena Walker, John Neville, Rachel Roberts, Eric Porter & Paul Rogers. In other words, these are top pros & strong audio personalities who grab their every opportunity. The musical performance is sumptuous & sheer pleasure to listen to, the actors & dialogue 'production' brisk, funny & sharper than you might expect. And the sound for both music & dialogue is of demonstration quality, one of the best of the period.
Those who find this version too musically ponderous or dramatically reactionary can find antidotes in the Bare Baroque Basics one by Jeremy Barlow & The Broadside Band (Hyperion), word & note complete, & the radical & often inspired 1948 Benjamin Britten arrangement (complete on Argo, abridged with the original cast on Pearl). They'll be missing some good 50s fun, though.
They'll also be missing the only available excerpts (15 numbers) from Edward German's tuneful 1907 operetta 'Tom Jones.' This really IS 'cleaned up' 18th century, genteel beyond the call of duty, but for those who respond to musical theater of the period, highly recommended. The 1966 recording is lively & accomplished. As Miss Jean Brodie would say, For those who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they like. And a good thing too.

    Album Description

John Duke (1899-1984) is one of the acknowledged masters of the American art song. This release of twenty-three of his finest songs will afford lovers of vocal music the opportunity to discover Duke's little-known corpus. Comparison with the musical language of other notable American art song composers (Griffes, Loeffler, or Ives, for instance) reveals an unusually consistent and personal style throughout most of Duke's career, the composer venturing only slightly afield of a conventional tonal practice derived mostly from European music of the nineteenth century. Musical influences on his language, in fact, are almost entirely European; most of his songs have an accompanimental texture unmistakably his, continuing, in a way, the tradition of the German Lied, using poems in English.

Duke often claimed, both in his writings and in conversation with colleagues, to have developed his art song style somewhat self-consciously after having studied in great detail the historical, poetical, and musical contexts of three previous genres exhibiting a marriage of music and poetry: the Elizabethan song, the nineteenth-century Lied and the French mélodie of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His choice of poetry avoids almost completely the abstract in favor of the tried and true themes of love and mortality, themes that most composers have found the most suitable for musical treatment. Duke's music is taken very seriously by those who know his work intimately. After all, about how many American composers could it be said that all 265 songs have a natural feel for the voice, an elegantly matched pianistic accompaniment, a recognizable and personal style, and a musical language that never resorts to false syntax? It is easy to see why American singers love to sing his songs.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Generous Packet of Art Songs by American Composer John Duke.......2006-01-27

Though his name may not be a household word among American composers, to singers the lieder of John Woods Duke are a staple of the recital repertoire. A composer well respected in his lifetime (1899 - 1984), his 265 catalogued songs are the epitome of the marriage of text and music. His musical style never veered from melodic but his integration of poetry with his expressive understanding of the voice places him in the same category with Ives, Griffes, Rorem, Barber, Heggie et al.

This fine recital by soprano Lauralyn Kolb, a former student of the highly regarded Howard Swan of Occidental College and a sought after oratorio soloist and recitalist, with pianist Tina Toglia is a study in musical intelligence. Kolb's soprano voice is beautifully focused and her communication of the texts ranging from ee cummings, Emily Dickinson, Elinor Wylie, Sarah Teasdale, Robert Frost, Richard Nickson, Mark Van Doren to James Joyce is pristine and warmly sensitive. Her collaboration with Toglia demonstrates the way musicians should approach the art song. There are many excellent songs in this collection that could be singled out, but the pleasure of the recital is that the variety selected by the artists is very satisfying for a survey of works by a relatively unknown (to the public) composer. Recommended. Grady Harp, January 06

5 out of 5 stars Richard Tauber is sensational singing popular music........2003-05-13

I have heard this CD many times, it is my favorite Richard Tauber recording because it features the popular music (including operetta) that I love, the selections are all in supurb mono sound and because most of the songs are in English.

My favorites are "Vienna, City of My Dreams", "My Gypsy Dream Girl", Let Me Love You Tonight" and "Lippen Schweigen" (Merry Widow Waltz).

5 out of 5 stars Superb Operetta Collection.......2006-09-12

Surely this must be the finest collection of songs in Enlgish from operettas and early 20th century musicals available anywhere. Marilyn Hill Smith is in fine voice and is admirably partnered by baritone Peter Morrison. This two CD collection is truly a 'treasure.' It belongs in the collection of any English speaking lover of operetta.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-09-21

This is really an interesting group of songs; most by Henry Purcell, but one by Pelham Humfrey, three by John Blow and one by David Purcell. The Continuo Song-scored for one or more solo voices with theorbo or harpsichord accompaniment- was perhaps the most universal musical genre in late 17th century England. The roots of the genre lay in the early 17th century lute song, from which it gradually developed during the 1630's. The modern term "counter-tenor" denotes an adult male singing in the falsetto voice. Ryland Angel and Mark Chambers are very well matched for these duets. Their tone quality is similar but not so much so that you cannot discern their individual voices. Their sound is well suited to the song material, some of which are also sung as solos. The duets are:'Sound the trumpet'( a great favorite of countertenors)-'In vain the am'rous flute'-'No resistance is but vain'- 'o Dive custos'- all by Purcell. 'Ah Heaven what is't I hear?'-'Quam diligo legen tuam'-'Paratum cor meum' all by John Blow. Each singer sings 4 solos all very attractive and well done!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars A.T's Delight.......2005-11-08

I was surprised to see this cd in a used record shop this weekend. This album is a classic, and I would assume most jazz afficionados would call this album an important part of Blue Note's library. However, this album is at the same time, obscure. It hasn't been done by Rudy Van Gelder, and I'm imagining the copy I picked up from the used record shop is very old, and that I wouldn't find it at a place like Tower, Borders, etc..

Art Taylor is a great drummer. He was one of the drummers to come out of the Philly Joe Jones style of drumming, and was sometimes accused of copying Jones's style. Wherever he was getting his ideas from, he could play them well.

Art Talor did not lead many sessions, but was a sideman on countless numbers of Prestige recordings in the 50's. This album opens up with, probaly my favorite song, and most definately, my favorite Trane original. Art was on the original recording of Giant Steps on which this tune appeared a couple months before the release of this album. Syeeda's Song Flute is fabulous. Art and the guys take this tune up tempo, a little different than this tune is usually taken, but they do it well.

The next track, is a great Monk original. Epistrophy is one of his classics. This song recieves special treatment here, with Potato Valdez on conga.

Denzel Best's Move is the third track. Art sets the mood with cross stick patterns, then Dave Burns plays the melody, before Stanely Turrentine, Wynton Kelly, and Paul Chambers come in to finish it out.

A couple Kenny Dorham originals are left on the album. I'm glad I picked this recording up. It is a great addition to my Blue Note collection.

4 out of 5 stars Why oh why is this CD so EXPENSIVE?! It's 40 min........2003-08-30

This is A.T.'s second (and last, I think) date as a leader, but the lineup is all-star and Stanley Turrentine is all over it, as is Dave Burns on trumpet, who I had forgotten about. The recording is clean, but a little underrecorded volume-wise. No matter. Wynton is...well, Wynton - clean, precise and swinging as always. I'd like to hear Chambers a little better, but due to the obscurity of this recording, don't count on a remastering. The whole groove is totally different than the previous Taylor date ("Taylor's Tenors - 1958) It is now 1960, and the sidemen dictate a different type of recording, and that's cool. "Syeeda's Song Flute" is the opener, and the tone is set. "Epistophy" is a slow grooving blues shuffle with Valdez providing a conga countergroove. You can almost hear a "Kind of Blue" coolness running through this one. "Move" does just that, with Valdez, Taylor, and Burns burning it up. Honestly, Burns really reminds me of Diz here, especially with Valdez pushing the beat. Turrentine is brilliant - Creed Taylor had yet to get a hold of him and change his playing toward more funk. He shines althroughout. "Cookoo and Fungi" give Taylor and Valdez the chance to stretch out some rhytymic dynamics, and the results are close to pure African. All in all, someone would be wise to remaster both Taylor dates and reissue them at a reasonable price in a 2 CD set. And for the record - the name of this CD is "A.T.'s Delight".
