Product Description

An immediate must-have for fans of Detroit-based soul-man Robert Bradley, the two-disc What About That: New Year's Eve in Bloomington spans the blind, growly voiced singer’s career, while also featuring several previously unreleased tracks, including an infectious cover of Joe South’s “Games People Play”, a stunning a cappella rendering of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” and the moving original “What About the Man” two of five solo and acoustic tracks recorded during soundcheck and collected on disc two. (Also included in that batch is an acoustic version of “Once Upon a Time” and “New Orleans” an ode to the Crescent City that Robert wrote some 10 years before Katrina). Finding the 56-year-old Bradley taking his Bloomington faithful to church on electrifying versions of “Once Upon a Time” and “Comin' Down” What About That: New Year's Eve in Bloomington features an expanded version of the Blackwater Surprise (augmented by backing vocalists, a second guitarist and percussionists) and a cover of Elmore James' “Something Inside Me."

5 out of 5 stars Don't walk, run to get this!.......2006-09-22

These two discs are really full of wonderful musical energy. The live New Year's Eve performance at one of my old favorites convey's the party that either was truly going in person or certainly going on between Mr Bradley and his musicians. Other than the typical rude undergraduate working on her Communication degree and unfortunately heard while Mr Bradley was performing his solo, the selections are flawless and tight. Mr Bradley's voice reminds me of Joe Cocker performed correctly. And tough guys, if the homage to Marvin Gaye et al does not draw tears on you, you are a schmuck who shouldn't even be allowed the privilege of music in the first place. I remember...

I cannot recommend this more. You'll hear the soul and sensibilities of artists like the Staples Singers and Bill Withers. You'll hear tight blues, you'll hear gospel, you'll hear another time of your life when you were younger and in a very hopeful and bright tone. Thank you Robert Bradley and your Blackwater Surprise. You made me wish I was in Bloomington again studying Anthropology and having gyros at the Trojan Horse!

3 out of 5 stars Plenty of saxophone.......2006-09-17

This is a live album made in Bloomington, Indiana, home of Indiana University. It's a trio album, so it's basically A LOT of Branford. Branford is of course a very good saxophonist. However, it's 77 minutes of saxophone playing, mostly soloing, with some melody. The songs are mid-tempo or slow. For me, it starts to all run together. Someone with higher powers of concentration might have a different response.

5 out of 5 stars Xavier>Everything>Beatiful ones.......2004-11-04

The highlight of the concert. I love this album and I always return to it and satays for weeks on my cd player. The multifacetic, polifonic, esquizofrenic Marsalis breaks all the lines between armony and noise; without rest he keeps playing and playing, constructs and de-constructs... the result is a breath-taking album, plenty of violence, love, peace and beauty. For every mood and only for wide-open ears.

5 out of 5 stars Great Concert and Great Album.......2002-01-23

My freshman year at IU, I had the opportunity to attend this concert and was fortunate enough to sit in the front row. What a performace I was treated to. If you are a fan of Branford then this album is a must have. I now get the opportunity to replay this concert anytime I want.

5 out of 5 stars A Super Trio By The World Greatest Musicians.......2000-11-20

Delfeayo Marsalis said, " Branford Marsalis is the most creative and imaginative person playing music today." I strongly agree to what he said, in other word, Branford is the best saxman playing the saxophone today (I wonder how many people agree with that?). Maybe you will agree with that statement after hearing to this trio album.

Hmm, how do I start? Ok, the musicians.. In this trio, we have Robert Hurst playing the bass and Jeff Watts playing drums. These 2 guys are no ordinary musicians who just only play simple jazz standards or simply just come together for some lame jamming session. Robert Hurst, is by far the best bassist I have ever heard. Many people have given a lot of acclaim to the new bassist, Eric Revis (in Branford's band) whom is also a great bassist, but I still find something is missing in Eric's bass playing, that Robert has. Robert got a deep sounding bass line filling with complex harmonic, rhythmic structures and humor, at times he would do some tension thingy like the late Jimmy Garrison, sustaining low notes, banging his bass line that would give listeners a feel of susdiminish sensibility (I don't know how to explain the sound!). And most important of all, he keeps the groove in a solid condition. Not to mention he can swing at any odd-meter vamp with great ease. A bassist with deep running power of his beat provides a very strong foundation for the band in case of any earthquakes! And by the way, where's Robert, I haven't heard anything from him since he played in the Ellis Marsalis album - another great album.

Jeff Watts is one hell of a drummer, his function as a drummer is far beyond from just timekeeper. I just love his creative thundering herd of drum patterns. He is actually one of the drummers whom have invented many drumming "idioms" to the Jazz community (I don't know how to call that!). No matter what kind of music from post-bop contemporary to Ballads, the fire and polyrhythmic conception is always there. And everybody knows it!

Branford is the best sax player of his generation, his playing is so consistent that those melodic and harmonic idea flows like a stream. His command on the instrument is so complete that one almost takes it for granted. The song is 15:14, you can listen throughout the song, he never run out of ideas, there Tain and Robert juxtaposing different time meters, call-&-responses and man, Branford is improvising on top of that!!!

This Trio is not about just playing Jazz, what there are doing here is beyond the word "Jazz". Tell me how many bands can switch on and off in so many different time meter vamps? (5/4, 7/4, 15/8). How many bands can play in 13 bar or 11 bar blues? How many bands can exhibit such a fine dynamic extreme? These are what conventional bands can't do, as they normally play in 4 and 8 bar phrases, 12-bar blues, 4/4 or 3 /4 time meter, and that AABA sequence or that 2-5-1 progressions.

This album display some of the most sophisticated, innovative, contemporary Jazz todate. Very few Jazz musicians can play in this setting comfortably.

is a kind of music that is not very easy to categorize. On the start of the track, Branford kinda evoke Coltrane's lyricism on the soprano and Robert Hurst mimics the bass playing of Jimmy Garrison which have a strong north India flavor. And slowly they increase the musical intensity and there, you have Tain playing his drum in reminiscence to the Tabla playing of the north India classical Tabla players (I guess you can imagine how it would sound!). Branford playing with a Coltrane lyricism throughout the music, with an extreme dynamic sensibility. Then they came to a momentary pause at 12:57, Robert Hurst did a fantastic bass solo beyond the explanation of Jazz improvisation theory, as I have say before, his bass playing here got a strong north India flavor. To me, that solo reminisces Imrat Khan' s Surbahar playing (a bass sitar that got a deep and mellow tone). I think it would be appropriate to use the Indian classical terminology on this track. The things they are doing here got a little sensibility to do with Raga Alap and Raga Jor. As in the Indian Classical music terminology, the depth of imagination and creative musicality of the performer and improviser is revealed in the Alap and Jor. Alap is the first movement of the raga (raga = solo). It is a slow, serene movement acting as an invocation and gradually develops the raga (Branford did it with the Coltrane's lyricism, like the way was played). Jor begins with the added element of rhythm which, combining with the weaving of innumerable melodic patterns (and Tain did it!), gradually gains in tempo and leads to the final movement (the trio achieve this too!!).

a New Orleans music that is very complex and have many mathematical solo structures by Branford...

This album deserve all the credits it got. Nevertheless, like many other great albums by Coltrane, or , Bloomington will not automatically arrive at your door step inviting you for a friendly listen. To understand the essence and true meaning of it, you would require some guts and depth. Listen it with an open-mind and you shall know what real joy is.

4 out of 5 stars branford live: pure steepy!.......2000-07-18

this album captures mr. marsalis (aka steeplone) live at IU with one of his best trios. he keeps the piano-less format of the preceding albums "the beautyful ones" and "trio jeepy" and again allows the absence of a chordal instrument to allow for free exploration of melody and rhythm, key since most of material on this album comes from the aforementioned "beautyful ones..." album. on this live set, the mood is relaxed, even playful, but no less artful. "xavier's lair" opens things up with mr. marsalis in a sonny rollins mood and segues beautifully into the ballad "everything happens to me." next up is steepy does trane with a quiet, but burning rendition of "beautyful ones." one of the great listening pleasures is mr. marsalis on soprano sax, and this is yet another example of just how good he is on the straight horn. the album closes with the humoresque "friday the 13th" (check out the ending) and the tribute to the late, great charlie rouse on "roused about," a great swinging conclusion to what must have been a wonderful evening in indiana. jeff watts and bob hurst provide their usual superb support. the only gripe, and this is minor, is that i wish there had been more new material. mr. marsalis records so rarely that every chance to hear him on record is worth hearing him explore new ground. still, a great set.

      Album Description

Cary Boyce's oratorio Dreams within a Dream, for soprano, chorus, and orchestra, crosses the night with dreams archetypical of the human experience: dreams of love, loss, terror, death, and ultimate revelation. The composer has assembled and set dream texts from various poets into representations of our hopes and fears, in a work of remarkable beauty. Commissioned and premiered by the Bloomington Chamber Singers, this recording is based on the premiere performance in May, 2003.

The Lark Ascending, one of Ralph Vaughan Williams' best-loved works from the first half of the 20th century, is for violin solo and orchestra. A kind of lyric soliloquy for the violin supported by the orchestra, it offers a pastoral view of the English countryside as evinced by the song of the lark as portrayed by the violin, played here with stunning musicality by internationally renowned violinist Corey Cerovsek.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Discovering an Unexpected Treasure.......2005-03-12

"Dreams..." is the kind of subtly compelling music that continues to reward with repeated hearings. Its surfaces only hint at the mesmerizing treasures to be discovered within its depths -- much as the title suggests. Boyce's sensitivity to text, texture, timbre and meaning combine to create music full of drama and transcendence. From the same sound world as Benjamin Britten, Samuel Barber and George Crumb. Don't overlook this gem. Artfully paired with a rapturous performance of Vaughn Williams' "The Lark Ascending."
