A Perfect Gem from so many years ago...STILL Available!.......2007-07-18

Wow! I happened to stumble on this listing, and, frankly, had forgotten about it. I was first introduced to this album on LP years and years ago (late 60's?) and quite frankly, it was one of my very favorite albums.

Years passed, and cds came, and it was transferred, and I immediately snapped up a copy of it, again. In these following years, I fear I had completely forgotten about it....shame on me! I am so pleased to know that it is still available, and that I can recommend something that is STILL available to you (which is rare for me to be able to do).

I cannot recommend highly enough that you purchase a copy of this great album to enjoy, over and over again. I guarantee it will become a highlight in your collection. I have taken my copy off the shelf and am listening to it as I type this review. I recommend you go to the little snips above, and listen to # 2, Villa Lobos...that should do it! ~operabruin

Like Finding An Old Friend.......2007-07-14

This album, now in its thirty-oddth year, is a treasure. Almeida, Terri, and maybe now also Ruderman have passed on. They were mortals after all. The playing by Almeida and Ruderman just on its own is wonderful, and too magical to be called merely good, or solid, or workman-like. Add the third ingredient of no less than the voice of Salli Terri, and the listener may as well be levitated. Good music takes us perhaps the nearest we can ever get to a ride on a magic carpet. Duets with Spanish Guitar is fine music by a trio of, well, if not genies exactly, flesh and blood beings with extraordinary musical abilities.

A Sweet Piece of Art Work.......2007-05-13

I first heard this recording on vinyl. This CD lives up to the quality first captured in that original recording. Laurindo Almeida requires no review or publicity; he is a legend exceeding Segovia or Montoya. Salli Terri, mezzo-soprano, happily, has no vibrato. When she hits a note, she means it...no wavering somewhere between tones leaving you some subliminal perception of the intended note. She has an absolutely pure, rich voice and a profound comprehension of aesthetics. I have not heard other works by Martin Ruderman, who accompanies on flute, but his skills are notable within this sweet ensemble. A wealth of skill and mastery contained on this tiny CD! I am sure you will be transported.

Haunting Beauty.......2007-03-22

I'm fascinated by the reviews from those who remember this album of long ago. In 1971 my girlfriend and I spent a night in a rustic B&B in Big Sur. The following morning, as we dined on a scrumptious breakfast and the love in each other's eyes, I had to ask the waitress about the music playing in the background. We bought the record as soon as we got home, and I have cherished it ever since. Six additional selections on the CD reissue are almost superfluous. The memories, and the music, are precious.

Superb .......2007-01-08

From beginning to end, I am enthralled by this album. I bought the original LP when it came out over 40 years ago and I also own the CD version. All performers are themselves excellent and they blend wonderfully on a Grammy awarded sound track. The biggest thrill for me is always Salli Terri's Bachianas Brasileiras number five. I have heard many recordings of this Bachianas by the most famous sopranos in the world. Salli Terri's singing of the Bachianas is in a class of its own --absoulutely spine-tingling.

Pure instrumental magic!.......2007-06-13

The purchase of this CD was highly recommended by a fellow member of Yahoo's "Beautiful Instrumentals Group." Containing several formerly unavailable on CD selections, this album is pure instrumental magic! For example, some of you may recall Monte Kelly's mid-1950s rendition of "Tropicana," from the LP of the same name, and other songs from that collection. They are here at last! I have been waiting since CDs came out to see "Tropicana" and many other "magical instrumentals" from the US and Europe finally appear on CD, and this is the first in a series of new CDs produced by Nick Acquaviva to hit the market that feature these wonderful instrumentals. I highly recommend that anyone who loves classic instrumental check this and the entire series out. You will not be disappointed!

Great Brazilian Guitarrist with an Orchestra in his mind.......2003-07-27

Toninho Horta comes from Minas Gerais, from the same place and the same group of composers and musicians which gave us Milton Nascimento. Some of the most notable songs recorded by Nascimento are Horta's compositions, featuring "Beijo Partido" in Nascimento's album "Minas".

Three qualities distinguish Horta's work:
1 - He is a great guitarrist and he plays within a conception of a big orchestra. His guitar playing seems to float wonderfully upon a sea of strings. Wonderful and unique playing! This CD shows his extraordinary conception of Henry Manicini's "Moon River". I am a big fan of Mancini's and I tell you Mr. Horta is brilliant in his recreation of "Moon River".
2 - He is a sophisticated composer of intricate songs and a great melodist. "Durango Kid" and "Diana" are among his inspired compositions. Though sophisticated, his songs are beautifully melodious for new entrants.
3 - His guitar playing is a parameter for guitar instrumentalists in Brazil, notably those who are in their advanced playing.
4 - Sometimes, Mr. Horta decides to sing and his singing is not so good. I wouldn't mind about it.

This CD is a compilation of previously released material. I suggest you'd rather have all the originals. If this is to be your first album on Horta's work, I tell you it's an excellent bet.

A true jazz stylist.......2002-08-26

Koorax is a true jazz stylist. People cannot compare her with the typical Brazilian singers rooted in samba or folk music. This superb classically trained songstress, gifted with a stunning vocal range, was influenced by ballad masters such as Shirley Horn and Carmen McRae. She applies her tremendous musical knowledge to all the tracks on Serenade In Blue, giving us some precious singing lessons in tracks like Bonita, The Shadow of Your Smile, and the Glenn Miller title song. Soon she will become a BIG jazz star in the USA. It is just a matter of time, folks...

Imaginative, versatile and very distinctive.......2002-08-21

This album is also languid, elegant and lovely. A stunning stroke of cool genius, beautiful and neo-classic. Koorax is no wispy Astrud Gilberto. The lady has class and a real sense of how to deliver the idiosyncrasies of a jazz standard. The nine arrangements are well-formed and nicely-balanced. There are guest appearances by Deodato, Azymuth and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. But, no matter who's in support, the voice that's out front is totally in charge and totally satisfying.

Superb album by the best Brazilian jazz singer ever. Period.
Sumptuous arrangements and outstanding performances by Deodato, Azymuth, Marcos Valle, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Jay Berliner, Kevin Jasper, Dom Um Romao, Nelson Angelo and countless other Brazilian greats. This woman deserves to receive international recognition, specially in USA, where Down Beat readers already voted her one of the top jazz singers in 2000. Forget about Jane Monheit or Norah Jones. Koorax is the best.

Charming and sensuous vocals in a jazz singing lesson!.......2002-07-14

It's a superb album, and Ithamara sounds wonderful. With her smart, mostly medium-tempo CD, she shows her class: the flexible, warm, four-octave voice fascinates the listener in each track. She finds new ways of doing classic jazz songs, making each one come alive again with a most efervescent style and approach. Ithamara may come to the edge, but never goes over. Rio's sensuous, caressing influence asserts itself. The opening track, "Bonita", is charming and elegant. My favorite jazz-oriented Brazilian singer ever!

Avoid at all costs.......2001-10-30

Ithamara Koorax has scored a lot of hits with acid jazz fans, but that's not necessarily a recommendation (in my book, at least).

Forget the hype on this one: it's one of the worst Brazilian vocal albums to hit the market in this or any year. if you want the best of the best, try Monica Salmaso, Gal Costa, Marisa Monte, Maria Bethania, Beth Carvalho . . . the list is endless, and includes plenty of men, too. (Go after master sambista Paulinho da Viola's "Bebadosamba" for starters.)

I can't believe how bad this is - the guitar in question isn't even in tune..incredibly tinny sounding. All I can think is this is some student recording. Only their parents would feel proud. Just remember the old addage - you get what you pay for - buy something else!!!

I was intriquied with this CD when I first heard it played during an aromatherapy massage. Great easy listening music for car, massage or at home.

Does not sound like classical guitar.......2005-02-09

This sounds like it was played using a pick, or using thumb and index finger. The notes seem disconnected and not very smooth. The two last peices (Recurerdos... and Malaguena) sound good enough though. As I listened to this, I could not help but wonder how it was recorded (is almost sounds like duets on some peices). I wish I knew who recorded this.

Elegant and Romantic.......2002-11-23

I am going to use this cd for my wedding. Canon in D by Pachelbel is beautiful. I wanted classical music, but felt it might be too formal for my casual outdoor wedding. Having the music played by guitar gave me the best of both.

Ran across this one while digging around for wedding music. Too bad the quality of these recording suck. I'm may know very little about classical guitar technique and recording, but this is junky. Keep looking.

Great CD.......2004-03-20

I thoroughly enjoyed this CD. I enjoyed it so much that I was moved to purchased the sheet music for several of the selections so that I can learn to play them myself.

The only reason I didn't give it a full five start is because I can imagine that there might be a CD somewhere out there that I might enjoy just a little bit more. I very rarely give either the highest, or lowest, rating in any situation. However bad, there is almost always something worse, and however good, there might well be something better.

Buy it and enjoy!

Offensive Spanish swear words in track titles.......2002-06-06

Maybe some kind of factory fluke on my CD, a practical joke by a disgruntled employee, but the 13 track titles on my CD did not correspond to the printed labels on the cherubic paper cover. Instead they were unprintable vulgarities in Spanish. Moreover, the unidentified guitarist plays out of tune.
