Brilliant.......2005-09-03
Sir Georg was an institution, like Mazur and Bernstein. He lacked the flamboyance of the latter, and of course Kurt Mazur would on occassion address the orchestra pit with neither podium nor music sheets nor baton. That was pretty impressive too the first time I saw him (Fantasy Overture, NYP).
But it seems to me that Matthew Passion brings a need for unison between the conductor and the musicians and the chorus dare I say slightly more than other efforts and repeatedly, it seems that Solti's brilliance elevates him over others.
In the "Come, ye daughters" beginning we are both caught and mesmerized and anything else that could absorb our attention is discarded. And of course Kiri is as always, magnificent. The tenor, Mr. Johnson is equal to Bach's criteria.
Like other reviewers, I love this work and the beautiful timing between all. 5 stars. Larry Scantlebury
An ideal melding of music, vocalists, and conductor.......2002-09-23
On the opening piece, "Kommt, ihr Tochter, helft mir klagen" ("Come, ye daughters, share my mourning"), the chorus perfectly captures the combination of knowingness, sadness, and dazed disbelief regarding the crucifixion. The strings are especially fine here, providing a delicate, almost spiderweb-like underpinning for the choral verses. The tenor aria "Ich will bei meinem Jesu wachen" ("I would beside my Lord be watching"), the chorus backs up tenor Anthony Rolfe Johnson's supple, unshowy singing with an ghostly, almost otherworldly tone.
The soprano/alto duet of "So ist mein Jesu non gefangen" ("Behold, my Savior now is taken") features Kiri Te Kanawa and Anne Sophie van Otter, who are matched seamlessly in terms of volume, technique, and crystalline purity of tone. Their weary litany of sadnesses is punctuated vigorously with the choral vereses of "Last ihn, haltet, bindet nicht!" (Loose him, leave him, bind him not!"). It's a thrilling piece, especially when it transforms itself into the thundering waterfall of sound that forms "Sind Blitze, sind Donner in Wolken vershwunden" ("Have lightnings and thunders their fury forgotten?"). The power in this piece alone is absolutely awe-inspiring.
I can't recommend this CD highly enough. It truly is a superlative recording of the "St. Matthew Passion" highlights, featuring as it does these great soloists, this talented conductor, and this amazingly on-the-ball chorus and symphony.
A contender!.......2001-07-26

Oh, my God?!.......2005-05-17
Besides jazz standards like "Strollin'" and "Stockholm Sweetning," Ellyn takes on old standbys like McHugh's "Can't Get Out of This Mood" (haven't heard this one since Lee Wiley) and Lerner-Lowe's "Heather On the Hill" as well as two contemporary bossa novas in 5/4 meter. A record producer's nightmare (artists who can't be easily categorized or who offer eclectic programming and varied textures along with supporting soloists who aren't household words) is the listener's gain on this rich, varied and generous set.
I suspect it's by choice that Ellyn elects to have her voice blend in with the mix rather than take on a more forward presence. Her musical colleagues are more like equal contributors than accompanists. And unlike many bassists, Dave Young doesn't use his featured role as a license to overplay (overly busy, overly amplified "acoustic" bass players are simply killing the music on most of the live sets I catch these days). His grooving arco turn on the aforementioned "Strollin" is the closest I've heard any player come to Paul Chambers' mastery of the technique.
This is a low-key, simmering session that occasionally sizzles, all the more so on repeated listenings. I would have preferred less crowded arrangements on a couple of the selections (the string synth is far more effective on "Estate" than on "Now") and a bit more favoring of Ellyn's voice on the part of the sound engineer, but this session is no one's individual showcase. It's a playful moment in time that resonates with music from the past while offering singularly sparkling sounds of the present.

Amazon.com essential recording
Berlioz's works are so typical of him, and yet so unlike each other, that it's almost impossible to select one as representing "the essential Berlioz." Nonetheless, if the choice has to be made, then The Damnation of Faust would probably be the strongest contender. It has everything: fabulous orchestration, great tunes, tremendous special effects (try the scene in Pandemonium), and most of all--so typical--a great literary basis (Goethe), which Berlioz proceeds to alter with total impunity according to the dictates of his musical inspiration. More specifically, in Goethe's story, Faust gets saved in the end. "Never mind," Berlioz seems to ask. "What would you rather have? Faust redeemed or a really cool scene in Pandemonium?" Solti's performance pushes all the right buttons: it's brilliantly played, urgently exciting, very well sung, and recorded with panache. Great fun. --David HurwitzCustomer Reviews:
The Greatest Damnation!.......2007-05-09
Possibly my favorite recording of anything...ever!.......2004-11-30
Anywho, history teaches us that often we, the performers, conductors, and listeners, are at fault and not the "problematic" composer. A brilliant composer often needs great performances otherwise nothing seems to hold together properly and we--even those of us smart enough to know better--blame the half-arsed results on compositional incompetence or just bad judgement. Look how badly even Nielsen's astonishing symphonies fair with anything less than white hot interpretations. So, Beethoven was "mad" at the end of his life, Schumann didn't know how to orchestrate, Gluck was a poor composer, Berlioz was inconsistent and downright amateurish, and so on. Strangely, all the major works of these composers are still in the repertoire despite the alleged flaws. Somebody out there must love them without hesitations.
Anyway, this is exactly the performance of "Damnation of Faust" that the ghost of Berlioz deserves. I'm aware of his perfectionism and attention to detail in his own conducting and I'd imagine this would constitute an ideal performance for him. Solti, his orchestra, his chorus, and his soloists treat this as the unqualified masterpiece that it certainly is.
And while I'm at it, to hell with the text! Berlioz gets a lot of flak for not adhering to the original "story" in many of his works. Well, Branagh gave us the whole Hamlet straight up and just as many people seemed to whine about that too. You can't please everybody. Fact is, any adaptation, film, operatic, or otherwise is an attempt to jam 200 pounds of culturally significant excrement into a 10 pound bejeweled bag. Editing is unavoidable and often that editing means changing essentials to suit a new purpose or a different kind of audience. If one wants it exactly the way it was written then go read the book. This is not "Hector Berlioz presents Goethe's Faust" and it was never meant to be. That sort of thing's an affectation for a later and more ridiculous age.

This is work?.......2004-04-02
I was already familiar with Spike, one of the great if underrated players in jazz 1985-1995. But on few of his recordings does he sound as playful as he does here. Listen to him spin out non-stop, purposeful melodic lines on "You'd Be So Easy to Love" or complement Ellyn's vocals on "Everything I Love" and "Lover Man" with melodic statements matching the tenderness of the lyrics.
On a couple of the tunes Ellyn lays down her own swinging bass lines; otherwise, the rhythm section is anchored by Monty Budwig's bouyant bass. This is one of those recordings--too rare these days--that swings from the opening bar to the last. Whether your thing is hip female vocalists, grooving pianists, Getz-inspired tenor, a rhythm section capable of lifting you out of your chair, or simply a great Cole Porter song or two, this CD has got it all.

Rucker Rocks.......2005-10-09
On the latter tune, Red Mitchell practically matches the delicate phrasing and melodic sensibilities of the vocal with his extended bass solo. On many similar sessions, bass solos are little more than "extenders" and "fillers," conventions that permit the featured soloist to catch her breath, or regather her strength, before the "out" chorus. But on this date, Mitchell is afforded opportunities to play an entire chorus even on the ballads, and he makes the most of each turn, eschewing fingery technique in favor of thoughtful melodic constructions.
My only quibble is with the sound of the recorded acoustic bass. Since at least the early '70's, engineers have boosted the sound of the bass while bassists themselves have gone to lighter strings placed closer to fingerboards sporting overly sensitive pick-ups. The result is a bass sound that is "organ-like" and far more "generic" than the individual, inimitable bass voices of Ray, Pettiford, Mingus, Watkins, Paul, Sam, and even Red himself in the '50's and '60's. I wish we could return to "honest," balanced sound and trash the sub-woofers but, as I was reminded when a teen-ager's van pulled up alongside me the other day, these are different times. (Unfortunately, my ears haven't changed with them.)
