Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable.......2007-02-07

If you're familiar with these two artists, you'll get just what you expect. Jimmy Smith contributes his soulful Hammond, with bass pedals on most tunes. Wes Montgomery adds quite a bit of the "double-note octave" melodic style he is known for. They are accompanied by only light drumming on most tracks. But on Milestones, they are more like the accompaniment to a full brass-based orchestra. That digression is a bit shocking -- led me to think there was a manufacturing error on the CD.

Definitely a keeper.

4 out of 5 stars About "This CD is SMOKIN' live.".......2003-02-21

That reviewer is talking about Jimmy Smith "Root Down", this is a studio Album, it is much more mellow than the Dynamic Duo. Easy and smooth.

4 out of 5 stars Cool Album!.......2000-08-04

A great album, with some great solos by both artists. The interplay between Smith and Montgomery is beautiful, and they produce some elegant versions of familiar tunes. Not quite as 'rockin' as their first outing together, 'The Dynamic Duo', which has some great accompaniment. If you like either of these artists, or just like smooth guitar licks and the jazz organ sound, then you'll love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Catch the moment.........2000-02-06

I have listened to this album endlessly, and the thing that will strike the listener is the absolutely seamless counterpoint of action between Smith and Montgomery. Solos become intertwined and in tune with the corresponding backgrounds. ROUND MIDNIGHT and MILESTONES are especially striking--very good band arrangements as well.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is SMOKIN' live........1999-12-17

This live recording in a small club is SO INCREDIBLE. It really smokes and is definitely one of the hottest Jimmy Smith recordings available. I have 30 or so titles by Jimmy Smith and have seen him a few times. This is one of my favorites, although there are very few I am not crazy for. The thing about this one is that it starts out without the crowd paying much attention because it is obviously very late and there is alot of loud talking and laughter in the room (this is from the LP version, I think the CD version has alot of the crowd filtered out), but when they get smokin' around the second song, the VERY LOUD crowd is like, DEAD SILENT and in awe. This recording really makes me shiver every time I listen to it.

Album Description

One of THE most anticipated follow-ups in the modern era of independent hip-hop, MADLIB's most famous alterego returns with a playground of stoned-out, helium-pitched rhymes over his hottest beats yet. Includes appearances by MADVILLAIN, and MED. Please note promotional advances of this release have a sampled deep voice that says (loudly and repeatedly)"THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF LORD QUAS". This sample is only on promo advances (and perhaps bootlegs), not on the version that you can purchase from reputable record retailers.

4 out of 5 stars LOVELY, BUT IT IS NOT AS INTERESTING AS THE FIRST ONE.......2007-02-15

oh, it is still lovely, but the first one is soooooooooooo much better to me. i agree with one of the reviewers about doing too much.......way to much. however, it is still an enjoyable listen. i love what he did with showbiz and a.g.'s FAT POCKETS on FATBACKS. that blew me away and made me blow the dust off RUNAWAY SLAVE. there are some welcoming listens on here, but i strongly recommend THE UNSEEN.

5 out of 5 stars Lord Quas does it again........2006-10-18

5 years after releasing the seminal-classic, The Unseen, Madlib came back to his alter-ego with a larger fanbase. He picked up quite a few fans through the Madvillain project, which showed heads he wasn't just acclaimed by alternative music circle, but could appeal to even the strictest of heads. With arguably twice the fanbase, Madlib took another dose of heelium, and gave us The Further Adventures Of Lord Quas.

This album is just as absurd as its predecessor; and while it may not be quite AS dope as The Unseen, it is still a classic in its own right. Much like It Was Written is to Illmatic, Quasi released a classic sophomore album, which deserved tons of critical acclaim, but didn't garner it, because critics were expecting another Unseen. While the formula is the same, there are subtle differences in between the two albums that set them apart from one another, and make The Unseen slightly better; still, this release on its own deserves no less than five stars.

Quasimoto still sounds like a mix of Q-Tip and Eminem on this album in flow, and sounds like an incredibly stoned Kool Keith lyrically. He's greener than a head of lettuce on this release, and gives you even more suburban jazz with his production. You're not going to bump this in your ride, no, but when you need an album to take you to a farawar land where everyone is tripping off of shrooms, and listening to scat records, this is one of the finest choices you could make this side of The Unseen.

If you're familiar with Madlib, then this album won't be difficult to get into; even though it'll still be weird as hell. It may make no sense to you at first, and even after repeated listens, it becomes more and more clear that the stuff Quasi spits only makes sense in Madlib's warped mind. Perhaps if your mind is equally warped, you'll be able to enjoy this even more than the average music critic; I know I did.

1 out of 5 stars What?.......2006-09-05

The first Quasimoto album is in my top 20 faves of all time. I thought it was a masterpiece when I first bought it and I love it more the more I hear it. Thats rare. I dont understand the love for this album here. The Further Adventures. Am I not hearing this album correctly or what. These rave reviews are killing me. This was one of the most unfocused albums I have ever heard. I forced myself to sit through this album 3 times before making my decition. This album is absolute garbage!!!! There is not one cut that gets play in my ride or in my studio. The Unseen was so inventive. It had style. It had creativity and the beat selections where outstanding.Great samples to some great breaks. It worked just right. I think Madlib did too much of a good thing on his second album here. He tried to take The Unseen out a little further. Big mistake. TO MUCH OF A GOOD THING IS NOT A GOOD THING!!!!! He over did it. I dont think you could even call this an album. Its more like a series of 2 minute sloppy skits and tracks that are not all that interesting.Being weird isnt enough. It has to be good too. Go back and listen to The Unseen from front to back. Then do Further Adventures. If you dont see the damage he did to his style then you are just raving because you like Madlib. He is one of the best to ever do it but even he can mess up. Lets get real people.

4 out of 5 stars For when you're feeling green..........2005-12-22

The hype surrounding Quasimoto's 2000 debut album, The Unseen, rendered Madlib (aka Lord Quas, aka Otis Jackson Jr., aka DJ Rels, aka Monk Hughes) as a forever stoned, twenty-four hour beathead unable to function outside of his private basement studio. The albums' curious, multi-personality design had much of the hip-hop press wondering if Madlib was okay; the rock press, however, loved it. Was this another case of the alternative press turning a hip-hop act into a novelty, or were folks really grasping what Madlib was trying to do while standing on stage dressed as a six foot tall yellowish, furry, snouted creature?
Eventually word surfaced that while working on multiple serious projects, Madlib pieced together his Quasimoto concept on the side, never planning to release it. The story goes that Stones Throw owner/Madlib landlord Peanut Butter Wolf talked Jackson into taking a chance and releasing what was at the time perhaps the most daring hip-hop album to see widespread distribution. In the years since, Madlib has become arguably the most creative and prolific figure in underground hip-hop. And Lord Quas? He's done a nice job of dividing hip-hop fans with his lunacy, and believe it or not, he's back for more mischief with his unimaginable sophomore album, The Further Adventures of Lord Quas.
Spread out over twenty-six tracks, Adventures plays out more like a Captain Beefheart or Frank Zappa project than your typical rap release. Using more samples than any standard ten rap albums combined, Madlib has created an ambitious sound menagerie that can hardly keep it's focus long enough to ever hit the two minute mark. Mixing oddball samples, vocal experiments, various sound-bites, and other unidentifiable sources with beats and an occasional rap, Jackson doesn't tell a story, but further sculpts the world he shares with his high-pitched alter-ego Lord Quas.
So what exactly is Quas like, you ask? First off, he is the bad character. Much like Madlib, Quas is a big fan of the greens. In fact, similar to The Unseen, Adventures often feels like a testament to the raw creative madness that can be brought on by a little bit of reefer, or in Jackson's case, a boat load. Rather than exploring themes, Madlib focuses on style and attitude, spending the glut of his time developing the personality of his all-too-bored studio partner Quasimoto.
Equal parts funny and confusing, Adventures is not for the everyday rap (or rock) listener. In fact, Adventures isn't for the everyday mind. With repeat listens, the beats start setting in and the subtle themes and jokes become lovably novel. Believe it or not, the vocal effects, bothersome as they may first seem, might even start to make sense. Quas is not here to be easy, Madlib makes that very clear from beginning to end with only the single, "Rappcats Pt.3," coming off as accessible.
Often times feeling more like a hip-hop version of a Cheech and Chong film, Adventures retains a high entertainment value throughout; that is, if you realize before pressing play that you are in store for a wholly madcap listening encounter. Jackson already has a number of first-rate hip-hop and jazz albums under his belt; to some, Adventures is just another peep into Madlib, hip-hop's current classic character, and his studio shadow, Lord Quas, the bad character.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Talent of Our Time.......2007-01-12

Jane pulls out all the stops and gives us a stellar recording connecting us to the women who pioneered jazz and standards. Ms. Horrocks' impressions of these amazing women is mind boggling. She has thier voices perfected right down to phrasing and calls there personalities from the great beyond. Thank you Jane for a phenominal recording.

4 out of 5 stars Incredible Mimick.......2006-11-04

Bubble from Ab Fab sounds exactly like Marilyn Monroe, Billie Holiday, Judy Garland and others. What a talent. She needs her own Las Vegas Show. She would be beyond great!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous!!!.......2001-12-09

I recently acquired this CD through amazon.co.uk after catching Ms. Horrocks on Michael Parkinson's BBC talk show. To hear her sing as Garland, Holiday, Dietrich, Bassey and Monroe was simply fantastic. What knocked me out was her choice of songs, and the contributions of Robbie Williams and Ewan McGregor (let us not forget Dino, through the magic of modern technology).

I have become a fan of this gifted performer through her work on "Absolutely Fabulous," and of course, the film that inspired this CD, "Little Voice." More please!!!

5 out of 5 stars Horrocks recently sang on Parkinson (BBC America)-Wow!.......2001-06-20

I saw Little Voice but never bought the CD. Last Sunday Jane Horrocks was on the Parkinson talk show on BBC America and sang "Too Close for Comfort" as Shirley Bassey. That convinced me that I need to buy this CD. What a talent!

5 out of 5 stars SO amazing.......2000-12-10

Jane Horrocks is an unbelievable acting and vocal talent. If you've seen Little Voice, you know that she is also an exceptional mimick. This C.D. furthur exhibits her mimicking talents. She sings Carol Channing, Ethel Merman, and even Frank Sinatra (his classic It Was a Very Good Year), and every song leaves you astonished and leaning over to press the play button again on your C.D. player.

5 out of 5 stars Close to the End..........2006-05-21

It's such a shame that one of the most original and brilliant collaborations in jazz within memory drew to a close with this album.

DMP and the boys were getting a little "raggedy" here, and it shows. But there are still some amazing listening experiences in store:

"Strutting Down the Avenue" shows the range of cymbals (for gosh sakes). The opening melodic line of the piece is all done by percussion, marking this as really original.

    it's a great album - one of a kind.

5 out of 5 stars And the 5 Star adventure continues..........2005-12-30

You can be assured that any time a Flim and the BB's CD enters your digital stereo domain - you are in for a treat. THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF FLIM AND THE BB'S is no stranger to this idea. It is jazz and improvisation at its finest. Dick Oatts and Billy Barber continue to remain innovative and creative in their approach to Jazz improv. Bill Berg is as masterful a drummer as you could ever "wish upon a star" for and Flim (JImmy ) Johnson has proven over and over again to be one of THE bassists that the world of jazz must stand up for. Add this CD to your collection byut don't stop there, you must also add BIG NOTES, TUNNEL, NEON, NEW PANTS, TRICYCLE, and THIS IS A RECORDING to your collection as well. Lift them all onto your MP3 player and enjoy hours of pure Jazz GENIUS.

3 out of 5 stars Good Flim but...........2005-09-27

It's okay, but clearly not their best effort. Essential for your Flim collection but only one or two tracks are memorable.

5 out of 5 stars What's so badddd about Flim and the BBs?.......2000-06-30

Apparently Flim organized the BB's in Cambridge at about the same time that the engineers in the area were developing digital sound, and they made some of the first digital recordings. They wanted to explore the possibilities of the medium, so they wrote tunes with great dynamic range, and they recorded them meticulously. The result, great sound.

It was also helpful that Flim et.al. were great musicians. The band is unique, in that the tunes are melodic, highly arranged, dramatic, so that they sound more like a Broadway theatre pit band tunes as opposed to jams. The tonality of the band is determined mostly by the keyboards, and the keyboard sound, combined with the tunes themselves gives the band a sonority unlike any that I have heard. This music is very easy to listen to. But, at the same time, the melodies and rhythms are constantly changing, so this is not bland 'elevator' music.

But, still, what is so badddd about Flim and the BBs? Answer: the horn player, Dick Oatts. Every time this guy blows a note the intensity of the music ratchets up about 100%. He plays lines with a fierce precision that propels the band. And when he is turned loose, it's "Katy bar the door", cause this guy will do some damage fast!

After first hearing the CD "New Pants" I ended up buying all the Flim CDs on the bmp label. I wanted to review "New Pants" but amazon doesn't have it, perhaps it's out of print. This review applies to all the bmp releases.

5 out of 5 stars Great background music for your life!.......2000-06-15

I used this disc as the soundtrack to a home-movie compilation I did for my siblings. That pretty well sums up its effect on me: The music is full of subtle commentaries on life that seem to echo one's day-to-day activities...full of dynamic extremes, sometimes fast paced and energetic, sometimes reflective, but always imbued with a sense of hope and optimism. It's really a beautiful album, I recommend it. One cannot miss with the Flim and the BBs catalog.

    5 out of 5 stars Bruce's Highest Adventure.......2006-08-30

In the late 1970s, Bruce Cockburn was undergoing his transition from introspective Canadian folkie to socially-conscious 80s rocker. "Further Adventures," along with "Dancing in the Dragon's Jaws," represent not only the progress of this transition, but also the artistic apex (thus far) of his long career. "Further Adventures" features upbeat melodies (Rainfall, Laughter, Prenons la Mer), contemplative acoustic wanderings (Red Ships Take Off in the Distance), jaw-dropping lyrical imagery and complexity (Outside a Broken Phone Booth, Feast of Fools), the loveliest post-apocalyptic ballad I've ever heard (Can I Go With You) and brilliant instrumentation throughout.
If I had to select any essential album from Bruce's extensive discography, "Further Adventures" would be the one. It never ceases to put me in a thoughtful and uplifted mood.

5 out of 5 stars Can We Go With You?.......2006-03-21

The 'Further Adventures of' was Bruce Cockburn's ninth album following the highly successful live concert 'Circles in the Stream' and preceding his most succcessful Americn album, 'Dancing in the Dragon's Jaws.'

Still in his joyous, contemplative musical phase this -11 track-album/CD (there's one bonus track on this re-release) is a delightful mixture of upbeat melodies focusing on both the natural wonders of the world around us as well as displaying a deeper appreciation for the spiritual mysteries laying behind physical creation.

Whether singing in English or French, 'Further Adventures of' is yet another wonderful listening experience from the incredible Bruce Cockburn!

Heard this CD on Hober Radio, had to have it. Flatt, Scruggs and Fiddler Joe on speed. And every now and then, a small echo of Snake Farm (without the voices).

i am completely baffled that nobody has taken the time or initiative to praise this incredible band and album. i purchased this on a whim and i don't regret it one iota. i only wish i'd stumbled upon this earlier. this quintet (drums, guitar, bass, marimba/vibraphone, trombone) rocks with a zany twist, utilizing all of their instruments to blend into a groov-a-licious cacophony. tight rhythms, mixed meters, great musicianship, and alot of fun obviously went into this album's creation. i never liked the trombone very much until i heard this band.
highly recomended for anybody wanting to listen to something a little different. also recomended for those individuals who listen to mr. bungle, primus, zappa, zorn or estradasphere.
amazon says it is released on the 'mammoth' label, but my copy lists 'prawn song' (les claypool's label).
