Sinatra already had one youthful career behind him by the time he made Songs for Swingin' Lovers! His were no longer the lustrous pipes of the kid crooner from Hoboken--the voice that made bobbysoxers swoon--but from the first notes of the opening track ("You Make Me Feel So Young") he seems to have discovered a musical fountain of youth that fully justifies the exclamation point in the album title. There's a buoyant new spring in his step, accented by Nelson Riddle's lighter-than-air arrangements, that makes the Columbia records of Sinatra's younger days sound stiff and stodgy in comparison. Even chestnuts like "Old Devil Moon," "Pennies from Heaven," "Makin' Whoopee," and "Anything Goes" are rejuvenated by his vibrant touch. Put this alongside his previous Capitol album, In the Wee Small Hours, and you have the definitive statements by both sides of Sinatra's mature musical personality: the lonely "saloon singer" and the swaggering, sophisticated swinger. Sinatra's carefree confidence achieves its supreme expression in "I've Got You Under My Skin," a performance that builds steadily to an ecstatic climax. Cole Porter may have hated his lyrical embellishments, but by the time the singer jauntily breaks the "fourth wall" on "Anything Goes" ("...may I say before this records spins to a close..."), you can't deny he's taken the title to heart. --Jim EmersonCustomer Reviews:
Quite Possibly the Greatest Sinatra Album of All Time--And One of the Greatest Albums of All Time.......2007-06-19
I have this on both CD and vinyl. The sound quality on the CD is clear and sharp.
One of the Greatest Albums of all times.......2007-06-10
If you want some upbeat romantic songs, this is it.
If you want a great 2nd marriage song for your 1st dance , new kinda love is or you.
enjoy
Too marvelous for words.......2007-02-28
The CD opens with the Frank Sinatra signature song "You Make Me Feel So Young." Frank's voice has matured into a strong, masculine and potent force that could caress a song or belt it out depending on how Sinatra thought it should be performed. The big band arrangement by Riddle shines, too. This track alone is worth the entire cost of the CD!
"It Happened In Monterey" follows; this song has a beautiful intro by the musicians and Sinatra sings this number with all the panache of the most consummate professional ever! "It Happened In Monterey" explores a romantic affair that may well have been Frank's one true love even if he was already committed to another woman.
Other great classic numbers on this CD include the playful "You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me;" "Too Marvelous For Words" which deals with the joy Frank experiences with his new lover; "Pennies From Heaven" with its great orchestration and the amusing song entitled "Makin' Whoopee" by Donaldson and Kahn.
"Our Love Is Here To Stay" gets the super-duper romantic treatment from The Chairman Of The Board; Riddle's arrangement helps to make this number an instant Frank Sinatra classic. "Anything Goes" again demonstrates the magic Sinatra and Riddle infuse into a song to make it so very special.
The CD ends with "How About You?" written by Lane and Freed. Sinatra asks his new love if she likes all the same pleasures in life that he values so much. "How About You?" also draws you in so that you experience the irresistible temptation to listen to the entire CD all over again!
The liner notes boast great cover art and the song credits are provided, too. Pete Welding contributes an essay about the work that Sinatra and Riddle did together.
Sinatra fans should consider this CD to be a "must-have" for their collection; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will treasure this album, too. If you enjoy this CD I highly recommend other Sinatra CDs. Diehard Sinatra fans will also want to get Frank Sinatra: Vegas which features four CDs and a DVD as well.
Thank you, Frank and Nelson!!!!
Awful mastering muddies up a truly great album.......2007-02-23
A Must.......2007-02-14
I think this is the best representation of Frank's finest vocal years.

John Coltrane has always been best known for stretching the limits, creating titanic, extended improvisations filled with exploding, cascading flurries of notes, but he was also one of the most lyrical of musicians, capable of the most heartfelt and touching ballads. The material here is taken from his Impulse! recordings made between 1961 and 1963, drawing largely on Ballads, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, and Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, albums that showcased his sensitive side. Coltrane's silvery sound brought an utterly new dimension to tenor saxophone balladry, a metallic clarity in which each note is given its own luster and nuance. Listening to these ballads gathered together, Coltrane seems to touch on every mood of romance, from longing to rapture to reflection, imbuing each song with an ineffable grace. His theme statements are sublimely beautiful, while his improvisations add new depths with their unique mix of strength and delicacy. "In a Sentimental Mood," with Ellington's shimmering, bell-like piano figure and Elvin Jones's animated drums perfectly complementing Coltrane's tenor, is simply one of the most memorable ballad performances ever recorded, but it's surrounded here by other gems. "Soul Eyes" is wistful reverie, while "You Don't Know What Love Is" has touches of an unsettled, passionate incantation. The tracks with Johnny Hartman are a rare meeting between a singer and a musician who are profoundly attuned to one another, with Coltrane's flutelike fills on "My One and Only Love" or his solo on "They Say It's Wonderful" conversational expansions on the lyrics' sentiments. --Stuart BroomerCustomer Reviews:

Silky and Sentimental Smooth Jazz.......2007-01-07
The sensual mood of "Coltrane for Lovers" dips into sentimental beauty throughout and creates a dreamy romantic world of smooth jazz. The entire album is slightly more than intoxicating, with the feeling that you have just fallen in love and are living in some jazz haze.
Don't be surprised if you start to look for songs by Ella Fitzgerald or listening to songs with lyrics like "I think of you night and day." ;). The cover of "Dedicated to You" leads in that direction. The entire album has an old-fashioned appeal with a modern mood.

Milk Trane.......2006-10-25
Coltrane was a man of incredible surprises, but the greatest of them may be his genius around a ballad - stunning contrast to the explosive "sheets of sound" that put him on the map and secured his place in history.
The folks at Impulse! - with characteristic marketing savvy - have done their cherry-picking wisely, the CD is almost an assortment of "big hits," if such a thing is possible in jazz. Coltrane stalwarts are here including McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and the amazing Elvin Jones on drums. There's also the treat of hearing Coltrane and Duke Ellington together, arguably a more historically important pairing than the much trumpeted, recently released, Trane and Monk collaboration.
Aside from Sentimental Mood, with Duke Ellington, and One And Only Love, with Hartman, the jewel that shines most brightly in this crown is After The Rain, an original Coltrane composition. (The slow descent and brooding atmosphere are reminiscent of Naima.) Tyner's piano is especially choice. After The Rain is simply one of the most beautifully evocative songs ever recorded by anyone.
One might say Coltrane For Lovers is for people who want the hipness of owning a Coltrane CD without the trouble of listening to him - the "rose without the thorn" syndrome. However, if, in the middle of making out with this music on in the background, they learn a little and are encouraged to dig further - where's the harm?
The more interesting question, or objection, is, to what extent is woozy, cocktail lounge music ideally suited to lovers? I would argue that this CD is perfect for couples in the first 6 weeks of love - while CDs like A Love Supreme, Ascension, and The African Brass Sessions paint out a more three-dimensional, passionate, and realistic portrait of love. Let's hope the neophytes dig that deep.

Oh So Soothing.......2002-03-23
The tone is pretty constant on the eleven tracks. However that is probably the only drawback. Because this collection most certainly can set a romantic mood. Pick it up and play it for your special someone. You'll certainly charm his or her heart.

"UHP! I'M AN IDIOT.".......2007-04-16
The last time I went home to Los Angeles - (You remember, I told you THAT story in my review for the Huffy Good Vibrations Men's 24-Inch Cruiser Bike. Are you paying attention here, or not?) - I called the BITTER BROTHERS and arranged a "Bitter Breakfast." That's a meeting where a bunch of us macho fellas - er, I mean, "Men" - get together to blow off steam over quiche and champagne. Uhm, that is, over Huevos Rancheros and strong, black coffee. (Let's be honest, the "blowing off steam" part could just as easily be called "Male Gossip", but . . . well, you know, I've faked a pretty good masculine facade for myself at Ammyland up to this point, and I'd hate to see it all go to ruin now.)
So, me an' my Bitter Bros were expressing our bitterness at The Sidewalk Café on Venice Beach one morning (perhaps the definitive "L.A. Experience") and observing the Frisbee-catching dogs, the rays-catching one-eighth dressed roller-skating babes, and the usual Carnival of Human Freaks parading past the Café, when I noticed this young cat playing some pretty fancy guitar over yonder. My soul emptied of its bitterness, and my glass emptied of its champa - my cup emptied of its coffee - I went to talk to the young cat and learned that he was a Russian bloke named VADIM, and I bought one of his self-produced compact discs. ["Vadim #1"; vadimrecords at yahoo dot com, or (310) 801-4212]
Well, I eventually just went crazy for track three: "Bossa-Nova." And having heard the term about a zazillion times (that's a lot!), I decided I simply must find out just what BOSSA NOVA really is. So I did an internet search and what I learned is that I have been in love with Bossa Nova music for pretty much my entire life without ever knowing it. {*He's a tad slow, folks, but give him four and a half decades and he'll figure it out.*}
You see, as a young kid in the early and mid-1960s, when the Bossa Nova craze was at its zenith, my Grandpa used to play it around his house. My Ma had an 8-Track tape (yeah, I'm bitter AND old, OK?) containing the gorgeously haunting song "The Shadow Of Your Smile." I loved it, and the song still makes me think of her. Wait a second. . . . . {*"Macho fellas" don't get teary-eyed, Stephen!*} . . . . Sorry. OK. Then later, in my mid-20s, I owned the classic Jazz album "Getz/Gilberto" on licorice pizza (that's LP, not 8-Track!) and I played the hell out of it (well, I would have if there had been any hell in it), falling in love with the beautiful saudade in Astrud Gilberto's voice. (Saudade? Look it up on Wikipedia.) Only Karen Carpenter's voice was infused with more, and - in my op - the standard ballads by Bobby Darin are the only example of Saudade in a male voice. (Despite the jocular exterior, my entire life is one of Saudade, but I don't know you well enough to tell you more.)
Then love came to me again in the form of Pat Metheny's three brilliant Brazilian-influenced albums, "The First Circle", "Still Life Talking", and "Letter From Home." About the same time, I owned a Cannonball Adderley album that included "Clouds" and "Morning Of The Carnival" and they were my favorite cuts, but I couldn't have told you why exactly. I also loved Vince Guaraldi's "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" from his "Jazz Impressions Of Black Orpheus" album, but the Bossa Nova connection eluded me. And when my Good Friend Melanie gave me Angelique Kidjo's "Black Ivory Soul" recording, I loved it immediately from the first few notes down to the very last ones, and I rarely embrace new music that quickly. But I still hadn't made the Bossa Nova Connection. It took a Russian cat playing Brazilian music on Venice Beach to make this American dude finally realize that the thread running through it all has always been Bossa Nova, and that Bossa Nova is the thing I dig! Hey, it required only 43 years for me to piece it all together; I'm just a mental dynamo! {*"Uhp! He's an idiot."*}
So, I just bought "BOSSA NOVA FOR LOVERS", and here's my assessment of each of its 16 tracks:
1. VIVO SONHANDO: Classic! I remember this one from my Getz/Gilberto album. Stan was one of the first major Jazz cats I got into.
2. WAVE: Wow! I've just learned that Antonio Carlos Jobim is the musician who transformed Samba into Bossa Nova.
3. THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE: [Sniffle! Sniffle!] I want Astrud to sing this one at my funeral.
4. CORCOVADO: Not the version from the Getz/Gilberto set, but nice guitar from Almeida, and Getz really plays that tenor sax! {*Yeah, but can he pitch?*}
5. MY FOOLISH HEART: Marry me, Astrud! I promise I can learn to behave myself!
6. AMOR EM PAZ: Sheesh! Talk about Saudade. Love it!
7. MISTY ROSES: Makes me misty. Astrud, play Misty for me.
8. DESAFINADO: Jobim is the Boss of Nova.
9. SO NICE (SUMMER SAMBA): Oh, gee, I swear, I melt. One of my very favorite tracks. Too short! More! More!
10. WINTER MOON: "Winter" warms my heart. "Great Getz!"
11. INSENSATEZ: Well, let's face it, along with "The Girl From Ipanema", this is the face of Bossa Nova.
12. DINDI: Astrud sings. What else ya need to know?
13. BAHIA: Cool!
14. THE GIRL FROM IPANEMA: I prefer the version with Getz and Astrud, of course, but great melody regardless.
15. O GRANDE AMOR: Beautiful!
16. MEDITATION: I dunno; let me contemplate it further.
I see that I used the word "love" seven times in this review. I don't ordinarily use that kind of language, but the collection IS called "BOSSA NOVA FOR LOVERS", and I guess I'm a lover after all. {*Nah. He's an idiot.*}

There has never been an instrument that conveyed more romance than Stan Getz's tenor saxophone, from the breathy, beautiful tone--all air and gauze--to the rapturous sweep that he could bring to a melody. It's a sound both warm and cool--able to convey everything from hesitation to keening passion. Getz could also swing hard, but this compilation puts its emphasis squarely on the ballad side, picking up highlights from his Verve recordings from 1952 to 1968, placing him in intimate small groups to orchestral settings. Getz perfectly captures the breezy warmth of a Brazilian beach in his collaborations with João and Astrud Gilberto, including "Corcovado" and "Girl from Ipanema," while there's another kind of poetry in the way he floats across the orchestra on "Moonlight in Vermont" and "Alfie." Herb Ellis's guitar frames Getz beautifully on "I'm Glad There Is You," while Getz's stunning melodic invention is highlighted in two quartet tracks with pianist Bill Evans, "But Beautiful" and "Melinda." --Stuart BroomerCustomer Reviews:

This CD pairs the first two 10-inch records Sinatra recorded for Capitol. In 1955, full-length albums by popular singing stars were still few and far between. These two platters marked the beginning of Sinatra's phenomenally successful relationship with conductor-arranger Nelson Riddle, and presaged the "concept albums" that would become such an important part of Sinatra's Capitol period. Songs for Young Lovers includes such romantic numbers as "My Funny Valentine" and "I Get a Kick Out of You," while Swing Easy offers up danceable versions of "All of Me," "Just One of Those Things," and others. Sinatra sounds great, and there's magic galore in these grooves. --Dan EpsteinCustomer Reviews:

"You Took The Part That Once Was My Heart!".......2006-01-27
I recently had dinner with a good friend of mine at one of my favorite restaurants, Buca di Beppo, and we were ushered-in at the Frank Sinatra Room. And to our delight, some Frank Sinatra music was playing on the background and I recall "All Of Me," a meaningful song from this CD, was played.
"Your goodbye. . .
Left me with eyes that cry
How can I get along without you?
You took the part that once was my heart
So why not take all of me?"
I consider this CD as one of the very best from my Sinatra collection. You can't just ignore Riddle's spectacular arrangements and Sinatra's par excellence vocal sophistication in all his performances. The first eight tracks were taken from November 1953 recording of "Songs For Young Lovers" and the last half was taken from "Swing Easy," an album recorded fifty-one years ago in April of 1954.
The Chairman of the Board will serenade you with the quintessential Valentine song, "My Funny Valentine" and an extraordinary song about gazing at stars, hearing guitars, walking as though you had wings, bump into things and feeling . . . "Like Someone In Love." He will dance with you and swing it easy to the danceable tracks such as "A Foggy Day," "I Get A Kick Out Of You," "They Can't Take That Away From Me," "Taking A Chance On Love," "Just One Of Those Things" and "All Of Me."
One more thing . . . this is one of the many masterpieces of the great Sinatra/Riddle team.
One last thing . . . this is timeless music and so deserves that special spot in your music library.
A Tale of Two Albums - One Good, The Other Great!.......2004-09-18
Getting back to the first point: With the exception of "A Foggy Day," "I Get a Kick Out of You," "They Can't Take That Away From Me," and "My Funny Valentine" (and, possibly, "Violets for Your Furs"), the 3 remaining songs suffer from overly mawkish arrangements and singing. In particular, "Little Girl Blue" is just plain wimpy, and "The Girl Next Door" is handily beaten by Frank's Reprise-era rendition from 1962. George Siravo's arrangements are too syrupy for my taste, and Sinatra seems to be trying too hard to merely sound pretty as opposed to really grabbing you by the lapels as he normally does.
Don't get me wrong - I usually love Frank's ballad singing every bit as much as his handling of up-tempo numbers. However, this album falls short of his admittedly stellar standards. For far superior ballad singing, I would strongly recommend the following Capitol albums: "Where Are You?", "Frank Sinatra Sings For Only the Lonely," "In the Wee Small Hours," "No One Cares," and "Close to You." In other words, any of his other ballad concept albums for Capitol!

Gershwin For Lovers (Of Gershwin).......2002-09-22
For "The Man I Love", the descriptive words that come to mind are elegance and sophistication. Herlin Riley provides the entry for "Our Love Is Here To Stay" which evolves into a low key restrained treatment overall. "Summertime", after an elaborate entry, which includes some fine arco bass work on the part of Reginald Veal, switches tempo with more than just an allusion to Ahmad Jamal's "Poinciana". There's quite an elaboration by Roberts on the verse of "Someone To Watch Over Me". The whole treatment of "It Ain't Necessarily So" is very unique and compelling.
Make no mistake, there is no stride piano treatment here in this music from the thirties. This is a fantastically very contemporary treatment of the works of Gershwin, one of the best jazz trio presentations that I've heard.
