Album Description

Although this quintet with Charles Tolliver in place of Randy Brecker debuted on the second half of Serenade To A Soul Sister, this album, despite its "could only happen in the sixties" artwork, is among Silver's best, if least recognized, efforts. The compositions, six by Silver and one by Maupin, and the playing are excellent throughout. This album makes its first appearance on CD.

Groovy, but a throwback.......2007-06-21

This is a Horace Silver Blue Note session from 1969 which has recently been re-issued. Horace has hornmen Bennie Maupin and Randy Brecker, and Billy Cobham on drums. Despite the fusion lineup, you get straightahead jazz. The opener and title track is a R&B shuffle which, unfortunately for Bennie Maupin, shows he's not very comfortable with that style. "The Risin' Sun" is another jaunty number with a tempo that slows and surges in spots. "It's Time" is a softer, slower song with a pretty melody. Bennie Maupin opens "Lovely's Daughter" with a flute solo. "Down And Out" is a blues. I'm finding it difficult to be too descriptive, since each song is 4 - 7 minutes long, and has the basic head-solos-head format. "The Belly Dancer" has an Asian cast, and "Brain Wave" has a slightly exotic melody. Aside from the first song, Bennie Maupin sounds good, and Randy Brecker sounds virtuostic throughout. Compared to the other stuff that came out in 1969, like "In A Silent Way" and various lesser-known avant-garde jazzers, this CD sounds hopelessly out of style. Proper enjoyment, then, comes from imagining it came out in 1963 (and does it really matter whether it was recorded 44 or 38 years ago?) and pretending the album cover art was daringly ahead of the curve.

Still cookin' like always.........2007-05-31

I have to admit that I love Horace Silver's music. His style is unmistakable, and he has that 'delicious' ability to combine the intricate harmonies that are characteristic of the idiom commonly referred to as 'Jazz', with the music's rhythmic origins. Whatever composition he performs or pens, Horace Silver's piano style is so distinctive that to me it imbues familiar melodies with an exotic tinge.

Horace Silver always delivers; "You Gotta Take A Little Love" is no exception.

While the inspiration on this session isn't as sustained as on "The Tokyo Blues," highlights like the grits-n-gravy "Down and Out" and the superlative "Brain Wave" elevate this to near-classic status.

A Genius, A God, The Master of the Saxophone.......2001-11-05

Why hasn't anyone written a review on this album? This man is a genius, he is a god and the master of the sax. There isn't an artist alive with his passion, he loves to give you his music and it shows in all his work.

Don't ask me why but I never seem to collect albums in the order they were released and despite this being one of Richard's earliest releases it was the latest to my collection with the exception of Crush. Take to the Skies bears Richard's spirited and moody playing, he really is the best at getting every single emotion out of each and every note. If your familiar with his work then you'll know what I mean when I say his music is instantaneously recognisable and only others can follow. A saxophone comes alive in the lips of Richard and this album is an excellent example of his heady and fervent playing. His latest release, Crush, demonstrates a little mellowing with age so for any one new to Richard my recommendation would be this album or Chill Factor. Take to the Skies is a worthy purchase just for the classic track "When a Man Loves A Woman" alone. There aren't the words to describe this guy's talent, each and every album is a masterpiece, his works should be in every jazzers collection.

Essential edition for opera lovers.......2005-02-01

This set gives you the opportunity to follow the entire recording career of one of the greatest singers in Operatic History. Enrico Caruso was the first superstar of the 20th century -- and this without the benefit of mass media. His person and his records were his greatest publicity.

The set begins with Caruso's Italian made recordings. They show a great raw talent. The artistry is lacking with many sobs, over acting and mistaken cues. The 1902 and 1903 clearly show a tenor with a lot to learn. But learn it he did. His 1904 sessions show a mature artist on par with any heard since. His voice matures before your very ears and by 1910, you wonder if you will ever listen to any other tenor the same way again.

The engineering used for this set is wonderful. There is no attempt at all to use the soundstream process of computer sound enhancement as heard on the RCA issued sets. These are near perfect mint conditioned discs copied by engineer extraordinary Ward Marston. They sound like natural 78s, they way Caruso himself must have heard the playbacks at the (RCA) Victor studios.

Also included are outtakes and extra takes. There is a "Celeste Aida" from 1908, complete with a broken high note, previously released by RCA in a 1973 set commemorating the tenor's centenary birthday. But there are new treasures here as well, including extra takes of two of Caruso's greatest recordings, the Italian song "L'Alba separa dalla l'uce ombra" and an aria from Rubinestine's Nerone. Listening to them, one wonders what Caruso could have possible thought inadquate in those long lost altenative takes.

Finally, there is the simple joy of hearing so many things so well sung. Caruso was the pinnacle of the tenor art. He can be compared to no other single tenor since ... he has the brilliant ring of Bjorling, the passion of Gigli, the beauty of Gedda, the youthful enthusiasm of Lanza, the warm tonal quality of Tucker, the pure strength of Corelli, the charasma of Pavarotti and the artestry of Domingo.

Whether you are an opera fan, a voice fan or just a music lover. This set is worth every penny.

Sound Feast.......2001-09-23

Night Creature is a universal feast of sonorous and dissonant sounds for aesthetes; in a word, it is beautiful. To me, it as a rare delight of incessant sheer music in a world relentlessly drowning out beauty with noise.
I hear Ellington at his apogee. Jazz? Classical? Why not "Ellington music."
Being one generally shunning live recordings due to the transcendent destructions of hand-clapping noise, I note that one of its myriad of delights is the applause follows in lieu of interrupts the music. Another delight is that the improvisation is by the Civica Jazz Band and Ensemble dell'Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Guiseppe Verdi performed at the Teatro Lirico di Milano; i.e., Europeans deeply aware of Ellington's earned status. Since the six-week ago first hear, I have quotidianly listened at least twice. After each hear, I hear Beethoven say to Mingus, "That gets yo' soul ahit." To which, Mingus sighs in delight, "Oh Yeah."

The best of the 4 I recently bought.......2005-04-27

For some reason I recently decided to buy a variety of Early Music CDs from Amazon. I purchased four, including this one, enough to spend $25 for free shipping. Of the four (the others being 'Praetorius: Dances from Terpsichore', 'Music of the Troubadours', and 'Music of the Crusades'), this is my favorite.

I particularly like the song whose title is translated on this page as 'Be sure to drink in moderation' - I don't know enough contemporary Dutch to know if learning to sing this as recorded on this CD would be comprehensible to native speakers of Dutch today, but I certainly hope so, because it would make a terrific ice breaker at parties in Holland.

As for the music, it's hard to imagine that a gaggle of trained geese would sound as good as these Crumhorns. This album really rocks.

a little jewel of Renaissance music.......2004-01-17

If you are looking for an album with all types of renaissance-music from the Low Countries this is the album. Different composers from that time-area and different types of music are recorded. Some songs are very modest, others makes it difficult not to hum with. This cd is a jewel worth listening. Renaissancofiles: this album should be in your collection.

A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26

These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.

I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

A great "first step" to the magic of "The Great White Way".......2006-11-26

With the Thanksgiving passing of songwriter Betty Comden, I recalled that I had, in my album collection, this album, not just featuring her songs but Comden singing on "Carried Away" and "Some Other Time" from the Tony-award-winning "New York." Two other songs from the play are featured, culled from a 1960 recording.

This compilation has some of the best of Broadway, not just the songs but the performers as well. Familiar names like Boris Karloff, the legendary Rosalind Russell, Nancy Walker, Chita Rivera, and Carol Lawrence are showcased in various selections from the likes of "Peter Pan," "Trouble in Tahiti," "Wonderful Town," "Candide," "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue," and, in this writer's opinion, the best musical in the history of the stage, "West Side Story."

The liner notes provide brief but insightful descriptions of the various plays, including an introduction from Comden and her longtime collaborator Adolph Green, also heard on the album.

The music is definitely Bernstein with his uniquely American style, coupled with Old World influences.
