5 out of 5 stars Cole's best years were with the trio..........2001-09-19

This 2nd volume of vocal numbers with the Trio covers the years of 1947 - 1950. Recorded before Nat was to become more of a "pop" vocalist and receive backing from arrangers like Gordon Jenkins and Nelson Riddle, the work done with the trio reveals a jazzier side of this great vocalist - not only can he sing but he was incredible jazz pianist with a style that was light and fun. The arrangements for piano, guitar, and bass are always tight and pulled off with perfection. Add to these numbers Nat's "smooth as silk" delivery and you've got a winning collection of standards including "What'll I Do", "Makin' Whoopee", "Too Marvelous for Words", and "Dream a Little Dream of Me".

The sound is slightly better than volume 1. There is a little hiss throughout BUT when you consider the age of these recordings and the generally quiet and open nature of a small jazz combo (i.e. nothing loud to cover up the hiss) it's perfectly understandable and it in no should detract from the enjoyment of the these performances.

Also pick up the 1942 - 1946 collection to round out the collection. There's a third volume which contains only istrumental numbers but part of the magic of these recordings is Nat's voice.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great jazz, lush music. Melllow, rich, fabulous! .......2005-02-07

George Shearing is one of the greats of jazz piano, and here his smooth and elegant style shines beautifully. Shearing has a lean, spare approach to his playing. Instead of pyrotechnics, he uses fluid, flowing chords and riffs to get to the essence of the song. At the same time, he brings out the tune -- he actually does play the melody -- and leaves the song in your heart when the record's over. On this disc there are lush strings on a number of tracks, vibes (Gary Burton and others), flute and various other tasteful accompaniments.

The classics "Lullaby of Birdland" and "Jumpin' With Symphony Sid" swing tunefully; "Blue Moon" has a uptempo feel, with vibes and flute making the track move nicely. "Early Autumn" and "I Wish You Love" have lush, romantic strings filling out Shearing's lively piano. "Blues in 9/4" may have been inspired by contemporary Dave Brubeck's experiments in unusual time signatures, such as "Take 5." Like the Brubeck song, 9/4 has a toe tapping rhythm -- but you're not quite sure when to tap. "Bel Aire" is an uptempo romp with Gary Burton on Vibes and Bill Yancey on bass. There's even a Beatles song, "Michelle," with a lush string arrangement and gently swinging piano. The other songs are all strong; there's not a bad track here.

This is fine jazz, full-bodied music that's also mellow and soothing. A versatile disc, suitable for many situations: listening, dinner, relaxing, parties, etc. George Shearing is a legendary name in jazz, and this collection is a fine place to begin enjoying his music.

5 out of 5 stars Nothin' better!.......2001-10-02

When I first got into jazz, I was at a loss for exactly WHO to listen to... There was just soo much out there, and there was no one I knew to guide me. Along the way, and early on, I found this CD. Horace Silver is (still alive I believe as I saw him live about 2 years ago) definitely one of the BEST jazz musicians to have ever come on the music scene. Like Art Blakey, the musicians that came under his wing later left far better for the time they spent with him. His arrangements, his compositions, his ear, his direction -- they have all left a mark on jazz that cannot be measured. For all the Henderson's and Breker's and the like out there, they would be so much less but for the true genius of Mr. Silver. This is truly a wonderful album to give as a jazz intorduction. If this does not hook em' and pull em' in, probably nothing will...

5 out of 5 stars A golden introduction to Horace Silver.......2000-07-31

I first heard Horace Silver's "Song for My Father" in the Jazz History class I took a few years back and loved it. This prompted me to find more by the artist, and I was led to this CD. I can't even imagine what Volume 1 must be like, because jazz better than this must be mind-blowing. Every single track is marvelous. The grooving "Song," breezy "Serenade for a Soul Sister," jazzy "Pretty Eyes," frenetic and brassy "Nutville," soulful "Jody Grind," and funny "Mexican Hip Dance" are all good songs.

Aside from "Song," the best numbers here are the smooth, suave "Gregory is Here" and the magnificent "Cape Verdean Blues," which is one of the best recordings I have ever heard. Joe Henderson rips through one of the greatest jazz solos ever, chorus after chorus of masterful playing.

This CD is an excellent introduction to Mr. Silver's music, sort of a blend of cool jazz and bop, always with its own special sound that sets it apart from other artists. He's still playing today, I'm told, self-nicknamed "The Hard-Bop Grandpop." Making music like this, we should hope he's playing forever. Definitely worth your money.

4 out of 5 stars Grant Green's Jazzy funky best.......2000-09-18

Those of you who are fans of Grant Greens early work (idle Moments, Matador, grant stand ect.) may turn your nose up to some of his later funkier efforts. Personally I love it. Grant green was one of the first artist to start what they now call acid jazz and his work heavily influenced hip hop music. Volume II of the best of grant green contains the best of his jazz/ funk records from the late 60's and early 70's. What's here is the trademark grant green non chord playing and improvisationational style laced with funky beats. The gems of this collection is the incredibly fonkay james brown cover ain't it funky now and the staple of blue note breakbeats sookie sookie. Other tracks that stand out is the effortless ballad cease the bombing and the all out jam session windjammer.
