5 out of 5 stars Sophie is wonderful!.......2006-08-24

There will never be another Sophie Tucker but there IS a great entertainer named SHARON McNIGHT who does a one woman show in which she practically CHANNELS Sophie to us, the audience.
Catch her when you can.

5 out of 5 stars A real entertainer.......2006-06-19

Who remembers Sophie Tucker anymore?
One of the first of the type of the high- power entertainer and truly independent women , . She had a sense of humor about herself, and especially about her weight, that was a major part of her act. But she also could truly sing.
A legend of her time and age, who like so many others great in their own time seems to have faded from public consciousness with the years.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag.......2001-11-11

This Gershwin collection is divided into two CDs; the first has many of his more popular pieces from Broadway productions, and the second has a selection of his symphonic works. Some of the songs on the first CD are performed by singers such as Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Bing Crosby, and sound absolutely spectacular. Unfortunately, the compilers opted for some lesser know and less talented names for several of the tracks, rendering about a quarter of the CD mediocre. The one pick that really didn't fit in, however, was Audrey Hepburn's rendition of "How Long Has This Been Going On?" Audrey Hepburn, despite all her wonderful acting talent, simply cannot sing, and listening to the entire song even once is a difficult thing to force yourself to do. In my humble opinion, however, listening to Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong singing "Summertime" completely makes up for it.

The performances on the second CD are wonderful across the bar, and a delight to listen to. My own personal gripe with this CD, however, is that, instead of selecting three or four compositions and including full performances of all of them, the producers have used a number of medleys and suites in order to include a larger representation of Gershwin's work. You may like this, and as I said, all the performances are top notch, but I found myself wishing that entire works had been used, instead of just pieces of them. There are a few which are presented in the entirety: the ubiquitous Rhapsody in Blue (an extremely good recording of it), Lullaby, and his three preludes for the piano, but these are the only ones.

I, sadly, do not have the discriminating ear of a musician, but there were certainly no flagrantly obvious problems with the sound on either of the discs; this album seems extremely well done from a technical perspective. I would recommend it to someone looking for a Gershwin album with a little of everything, but for someone who already has or is looking to start a collection of his work, this CD will add very little of note.

5 out of 5 stars a great collection of gershwin's hits.......2001-08-14

This is clearly one of the best collections of Gershwin's ever-lasting musical masterpieces. Rhapsody in Blue is a favorite piece, and the cd contains many songs sung by some of the greatest singers, including Ella Fitzgerald. If you've been searching for the perfect gershwin cd, consider purchasing this particular one.

5 out of 5 stars marvelous mixture of songs and instrumentals on 2 CD's.......1999-01-14

This collections includes seventeen Gershwin songs sung by superb artists over several decades and 11 wonderful "best of" instrumentals. Singing artist incude original recordings by Billie Holiday, Louis Armstong, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, and others. Instrumentals include Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris. Many of the instrumentals were recorded by Arther Fiedler and the Boston Pops. There is 140 minutes of music on two CD's

Erin McKeown's quirky, folksy music weds the intimacy of the coffeehouse circuit with the braininess of her daytime gig as an ethnomusicology student at Brown University. Accompanying herself on guitar, piano, banjo, and the odd sampler, this precocious Virginia native has crafted a winning album of original songs that range from the coy minimalism of "Queen of Quiet" to the genuine beauty of "How to Open My Heart in 4 Easy Steps." McKeown infuses her songs with a droll wit and a keen awareness of jazz, blues, and Tin Pan Alley traditions (how many 23-year-olds cover Rodgers and Hart's "You Mustn't Kick It Around"?). With its echoes of Gillian Welch, k.d. lang, Suzanne Vega, and the Handsome Family, Distillation is an eclectic collection of mostly upbeat tunes that play nicely while the barn is burning. --Bill Forman

She's different than the rest -- some old fashioned sounds with an entirely unique style -- entirely McKeown.

4 out of 5 stars www.glasswerk.co.uk review.......2003-04-09

The topics of uncertainty and love has never been so subtly expressed as Erin McKeown has managed to do so, and in her debut proper 'Distillation' she explores swing, folk and Tin Pan Alley jazz with beguiling consequences. Acoustic guitar number 'Queen of Quiet' is the first and the shortest song, with McKeown's Deep South drawl adding to the uplifting mood set by this opener. 'Blackbirds' develops with a more of a jazz/blues style, delivered with a great deal of swagger, and she manages to do that to more or a lesser degree in every song.

It is with lyrics that the 24 year old excels in the most. Subjects of death among others are dealt with humour and sensitivity, "....we both found heaven right then, you just chose not to come back...." in 'La Petite Mort' a country number with bluegrass roots, and touches on the topics of cocaine and roses in the poignant 'The Little Cowboy' where McKeown reaches Joni Mitchell levels of diva dizziness. The slim production of the record successfully brings out McKeown's ability to use an instrument both rhythmically and sonically. As a result of this the songs sound resolute and bright, with the result that the quieter moments on this record are at times the memorable and striking moments, especially on the quieter times on 'Daisy and Prudence' and the yearning 'Love In 2 Parts' which shows her songwriting to be strong and her delivery impeccable. Swing is also an obvious influence, and provides the jollier moments with a cover of Rodger and Hart's 'You mustn't kick it around' and the quirky 'Didn't They?'. Each song is intricate despite its simplicity, overflowing with invention and sentiment, and is sure to win the hearts of those who cross her path. With 'Distillation' Erin McKeown has proved that less is indeed much, much more.

Wow, what can I say, the lady is the complete package, an intersting voice, the most original lyrics and the coolest guitar playing I've heard since Richard Thompson. Hearing blackbird once propelled me to buy Distillation and have not been dissapointed. It has occupied my #1 slot in my 6 disc changer for 4 months, obsessed? I guess!

5 out of 5 stars distilled!.......2003-02-19

She's the queen of quiet and soon the UK is going to see what the US has been keeping from them when her debut album "Distillation" gets a UK release in February. Already very popular and well known among the folk community of the states, this is the 24 year old Erin McKeown's first major release after her two successful 2,500 cassette only releases, a self-titled debut and "Monday Morning Cold" (1998) and. One of America's best-kept secrets and well worth the wait.

Mrs McKeown in her songs achieves the goal of both being distinctly modern, living up to her post-Bjork and Moby comparisons and at the same time old fashioned brining swinging 1920's jazz onto such songs as "Blackbirds". Erin grew up in Virginia and it was at Brown University that she found her unique gift for combining music old and new into her own hybrid style. Very difficult to pigeonhole in one genre toying with everything from modern pop, swing jazz and cabaret. She showcases here all her past influences and love of music and movies. While it's easy to get caught up with the comparisons it must also be said that this is unlike anything else before it, Erin is the first of her kind and it's easier to imagine that in the future people will compare artists to her, instead of visa versa which is a view shared by many writers like Dar Williams, "Don't let anybody tell you that Erin McKeown is the 'next' anyone. She's the very first Erin McKeown, and she's great."

Another extraordinary thing is the production, or lack of it. All of this record is self financed and instead of confining her sound to a soulless generic recording studio Erin and producer David Chalfant relocated to a farmhouse out in Massachusetts. All of the tracks were recorded here and very few have any processed electronic tinkering on them .The songs are refreshingly real sounding and gritty without the usual re-mastering that occurs. What you get is what happened and this, for use of a better word makes it sound real and fresh. The whole thing from the recording to promotion (self promoted from word of mouth and her website) is all very down to earth and grassroots.

Plucky guitar opener "Queen of Quiet" the shortest of the songs offered here, introduces unusual and enchanting vocal stylings not to dissimilar to US singers Kd Lang, but more energetic and uplifting. It also showcases her brilliant song writing with lyrics confessing her to be "The kind of lover that won't run for cover, what kind of lover am I?". Then "Blackbirds", a jazzy, blues style number is so catchy and infectious with it's danceable blues guitar sounds and lovable lyrics harking back in many ways to the children's rhyme with the birds of the same name. If you don't get the urge to dance to this, then check for a pulse. All the songs have smart lyrics from an artist who is offering us everything she is and while some of the best are partly collages of other influences as used on "Blackbirds" she really comes into herself with the more coherent songs like "The Little Cowboy" with the haunting images of roses and cocaine. While we've had ladies giving us distinct and original vocals before, Alanis Morrisette or Ani Difranco for instance, it's the combination her of striking singing and skilful playing of whatever instrument she picks up be it a banjo or a guitar. Smart and very cool.

To the slow emotional "How to open my heart in 4 easy steps". Erin flexing her songwritting muscles again and asking kindly to "Untie these strings, from around my heart" and sadly confessing herself as "undone". That description is appropriate for this and many songs that are so open and overflowing with ideas and emotion. The perfect almost-a-love songs to complete the amazingly eclectic collection of songs.

So cheerful and instantly likable, so diverse that everyone will find something here to there taste. Fans of eclectic musicians like Badly Drawn Boy and the increasingly famous Polyphonic Spree will embrace this album openly. Buy this and then buy her previous albums on re-release soon.

5 out of 5 stars What more can you say?.......2002-04-30

For those of you who feel you've out grown Ani Difranco because you don't like the way she's heading, give this lil gal a try. It's not all political riot grrl angst here. This 5 foot spit fire delivers prose like a emerson on benzedrine. Her Alternate tunings on her guitar change from song to song and give each one a distinctive feel that connects with each word that pours from her mouth. Her Songs move from theme to theme and genre to genre, never lulling in expectation. "Queen of Quiet" breaks it down in an almost contradictory spoken word speech. I've never heard a hop-along country song like "little cowboy" mosey along as if Roy Rogers and Jack kerouac collaborated On The "dusty" Road. Watch this one. She's gonna have more tricks up her sleeve.

5 out of 5 stars You Will Be Listening To This CD 50 Years From Now!.......2006-04-13

Just to have this rendition of 'Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans' is worth the price of buying it. While I loved it before, after Hurricane Katrina I found myself listening to this track over and over and over, day after day, week after week. It's soulful refrain seeped into my soul and my mind was awash with memories of my tiny apartment in The French Quarter back in the late 80s. It is truly inspirational.

    5 out of 5 stars A lot of sweat.......2004-05-16

There was a lot of sweat that night - or so says the linear notes. You can almost feel the sweat, the raw emotion, through the recording. Engineered brilliantly and performed even more brilliantly, uppity songs like "Knoz moe king" and all of its variations make this cd an amazing buy. It lasts forever - but I listen to it all the way through whenever I start it up -- it works as a whole extrememly well. All the instruments are at their finest.

The first track is so fast I love playing it for my trumpet friends just to watch them drool and grow red with envy. Oh well, this dude's talented - and it shows.

    5 out of 5 stars I was there.............2004-04-19

This is one of the most definitive recordings ever made. I had the great privelege of being there for the entire run. There was a fantastic "Blues & Ballad" set that was never released from this engagement. It'll be interesting to see if Columbia ever releases these alternative tracks.

    5 out of 5 stars Still listening.......2001-07-20

I wrote the review above, and this disk came up again in a conversation a few weeks ago with tenor saxophonist Brice Winston. Brice and I were in the McDonald's Jazz Band in the summer of 1988, and hadn't seen each other until a concert that I attended at Blues Alley (live near DC now) where Brice was with Terrance Blanchard. After the set, we talked about how both of us had purchased this album since our tour with the McBand, and both of us had worn it completely out on cassette. A common experience for those who are into instrumental jazz that is heavy on improvisation and close musical communication between the musicians. With so many albums these days "studioized," its great to hear improvization rule the roost with some of todays brightest musicians, just as it did on this two CD live set.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent live jazz!.......1998-11-16

I purchased this album while I was a music performance major several years ago on cassette, played out that tape, and had to buy it on CD. The musicians assembled on this album are all-stars on their individual instruments, but this combo is now long gone. Shortly after this recording, Wynton's musical style changed significantly, and they went their separate ways. The level of sophistication on this album is nearly infinite. I've listened to each of these tracks more than 30 times, and everytime, find something more to appreciate. Marcus Roberts' solo on "Juan" (track 4) is one of the best live improvised piano solos ever. His dark harmonies, and boundless patience "unwinding" this improvised masterpiece, make it absolutely electric. This album is (in my opinion) the best recording ever released by any of Wynton's bands. It's a shame that he didn't pursue this musical avenue further, although his brother later did, with Jeff Watts, Robert Hurst, and Kenny Kirkland.

5 out of 5 stars A Hard Swinging Big Band.......2007-03-11

This CD really swings! The band, a mixture of Army and Air Force musicians, is really tight. The lead trumpet (Liesl Whitaker), bass trombone (Jeff Cortazzo), and baritone sax (Scott Silbert) are exceptional. The sound quality is especially high for a live recording. This session is a nice follow up to their debut album "A Perfect Match." Fans of modern big band music will definitely enjoy this one.

      Saxes:
Joseph Henson (tenor),Tedd Baker (tenor), Bill Linney(alto), Antonio Orta(alto), Scott Silbert (bari)

      Trombones:
Matt Niess, Jim McFalls, Jay Gibble, Jeff Cortazzo(bass)

      Trumpets:
Liesl Whitaker(lead), Brian MacDonald, Craig Fraedrich, Graham Breedlove

      Rhythm:
      Tony Nalker(p), Jim Roberts(b), Steve Fidyk(d)

      5 out of 5 stars Big Swing!.......2006-11-09

Mark Taylor and Steve Fidyk's new live disc is inspired and hard swinging. The highlight of the cd is big band specialist Steve Fidyk's both mean driving and dynamic playing. The band is certainly in league with the great bands of this era, and Steve kicks in a fashion reminiscent of Mel Lewis' command and Buddy's incendiery temperment. The biggest surprise is Brush Taps; a hip and delicate expression of brush mastery. If you dig the Clayton/Hamilton Orchestra, VO, or any of the great bands (Kenton, Basie, you get the idea), then you'll like this....ALOT. Enjoy!

Recording for more than 30 years, Maria Muldaur has moved from jug-band music to Tin Pan Alley pop, blues, and jazz. It is the latter two genres that have most defined her output since the 1980s. A Woman Alone With the Blues, from 2003, was Muldaur's tribute to jazz vocalist Peggy Lee, and she's followed that with this set of 10 thematically linked odes to love. It's a testament to the subtle dramatics of her voice that she is equally convincing when singing of love on the rise, or of its melancholy demise. Smartly sequenced and warmly arranged, the disc moves gracefully from the sunshine to the moonlight. From dreamy anticipation to heartache, this is a portrait of the varied and elusive faces of love. --David Greenberger

5 out of 5 stars Sensuous, smart and sexy...WOW!.......2004-12-07

I bought this CD after hearing 'Baby, you're my destiny'- I'm in love and you know how that is, every love song makes sense and appears to be written just for you.. This is such a great collection of songs- she is alternately exuberant, wistful, sexy and rueful. This CD showcases this womans fantastic voice- the quality of the musicians on all the tracks to me are flawless. A great big wonderful CD.

4 out of 5 stars In the Mood.......2004-10-06

Maria Muldaur's creative streak continues with "Love Wants to Dance." The incredible thing that Muldaur makes seem so effortless is making this diverse set of songs sound like they belong together. She sets the mood and draws us into the mood with her. From the opener, "The Lies of Handsome Men," her sultry wistful vocals pulse the emotions out of the lyric, "Somewhere in the corner of my mind, I'm not a fool completely blind. Even though he's hooked me on his line, I find the pleasure's been mine." Benny Goodman's "If Dreams Come True" begins to sound bluegrass with Joe Craven's violin before its uptempo swing gets our feet to tapping. The 7-minute "Love Dance" is as soft and swaying as any torch song that has been lit in the last century. "Come share your secret dreams with me," Muldaur invites on the sparse "Isn't That the Thing to Do?" Bob Dylan's "Moonlight" is remade so completely that one could swear he must have been one of the 1940's best composers. Taj Mahal's "Baby You're My Destiny" is an upbeat thrill as Muldaur croons, "You really mess with me." Harold Arlen's "I've Got a Right to Sing the Blues" is drenched with Jim Rothermel's sexy sax swagger as Muldaur's vocal interplays with the sax in a flirtatious sadness. "I found a shirt you left behind, hidden between some clothes of mine," she again croons with more sad sax weeping gently on "The Strong Stand Alone." Sheila Smith's bright upbeat "Everyday's A New Day" concludes the set. Muldaur continues to push the boundaries by discovering and reinventing excellent material that is enhanced by the singer's vocal embrace. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Muldaur Delivers Another Winner!.......2004-09-14

Maria Muldaur's latest offering, "Love Wants Dance," follows in the footsteps of her wonderful Peggy Lee tribute "A Woman Alone With The Blues." Here we find Muldaur as seductive and sultry as ever. She sings with an ease and carefree quality that reminds one of her earlier works, in particular "Sweet and Slow." Here we find the artist moving in a territory where at this point in her career she excels and cannot be mimicked or really outdone by any other singer.

There is particular care taken in the choice of material and its unified presentation. Muldaur and company move easily from the works of Harold Arlen and Blossom Dearie to songs of Bob Dylan, Taj Mahal and Brenda Burns as if they were all writing with the same pen. It's a great achievement to coherently put together such material without a seam! But then again, Muldaur's been doing such seamless work for years.

It's hard to pick a favorite here since every cut is exquisite, but I would single out " The Lies Of Handsome Men," "Isn't That The Thing To Do?" and "I've Got A Right To Sing The Blues" as particularly special. But it's also hard to not note Mahal's "Baby You're My Destiny," Burn's "The Strong Stand Alone," and Sheila Smith's "Every Day's A New Day."

Muldaur's band here is right in touch with the singer. Danny Caron's guitar work is splendid, and it weaves in and out in a languid style that suits Muldaur's voice and temperament perfectly. Jim Rothermel is also to be commended for some fine clarinet and sax work, especially on "I've Got A Right..."

"Love Wants To Dance" is as fine a recording as Muldaur has ever put out. While its not "Sweet Harmony" or "Richland Woman Blues," it is every bit as good as those recordings. One just has to remember that Maria Muldaur comes in many styles and colors and that from recording to recording she'll throw you a curve ball every time!
