5 out of 5 stars Great Things In Store For This Guitarist!.......2005-07-16

This is a very talented young man who has a great future ahead of him. It's hard to believe he's only in his twenties.

You can hear the influence of B.B. King in his playing and the liner notes confirm that B.B. was and is an inspiration. Make no mistake, this is no mere copycat. Kirk has learned from the masters - including Elmore James (check out "Worried Man Blues") - but he is definitely his own man.

The album is titled "Shades of Blue" and these shades range from songs written by Jimmy Dawkins, Jr. Wells and Magic Sam, to Percy Mayfield. However, These are not the usual covers. Someone certainly gave these choices some thought. There are also a couple of originals showing additional talent as a songwriter. On "Blues for Boo Boo" (his daughter - and I'd love to hear the story behind that nickname) we get a hint that he may also have some jazz in his repertoire. That hint shows up again in "Hip Hug Her".

The vocals are shared by Kim Wilson, along with his oh-so-fine harp, Janiva Magness and Finis Tasby and they give Kirk plenty of room to show his stuff. I particularly enjoyed the vocals of Finis Tasby whose voice and style seem to mesh especially well with Kirk's. I would have liked to have heard a couple more intrumentals. Maybe next time. Meanwhile, I highly recommend this CD and I hope there is more to come soon. Am I raving? Yes I am!

One last note to Riley: Your blues are in good hands!

5 out of 5 stars The blues lives on.......2005-03-29

In a world infatuated with hip hop, young African-American blues guitarists are a rare commodity. Rarer yet are those whose touch, tone, and vibe recall such Chicago blues greats as Buddy Guy, Magic Sam, and Otis Rush in their youth. Meet Kirk Fletcher: Still in his '20s, he plays with the conviction and authority of a seasoned vet, yet burns with a young man's fire. Fletcher favors toothy Strat tones, stinging bends, and flurries of tight, staccato riffs that seem to pop from his fretboard like little firecrackers. His touch is supple and his fingering fluid, yet his phrases never sound slick or contrived. Fletcher and his no-B.S. band cover blues classics by B.B. King, Willie Dixon, and Magic Sam; toss in some R&B (including Percy Mayfield's "The River's Invitation" and a funky take on Booker T. & the MG's "Hip Hug Her"); and cap things off with modern offerings from the likes of the Fabulous Thunderbirds' Kim Wilson. Fresh, vital blues.

5 out of 5 stars A real talent to watch .......2005-02-06

Every now and when someone is able to emerge from the crowd of very good blues musicians out there and demonstrate that he has something special that distinguishes himself. I think that this is exactly the case of Kirk Fletcher. This album is a real gem that shouldn't be missed by any serious blues fan. With the help of veterans like Kim Wilson, Finis Tasby and Janiva Magness sharing vocal duties and the support of a fantastic band Mr. Fletcher delivers 17 strong blues songs that deserve to be listened. His guitar work is outstanding in every track and, even though very close to the style of the great players of the past, he brings something new into the mix. Fantastic tone control and fluid phrasing are, from my point of view, his main assets that together with is innovative way in creating music progression, make his sound fairly unique and very personal. Not a bad tune to be spotted, this is the classic CD that you would listen from start to finish and when it is over, well... you will play it again!

5 out of 5 stars Revolutionary Words.......2003-12-25

Malik Is Definetely pushing the envelope on "real" issues, his wordplay and music blend nicely. I hate the fact that he doesn't get the promotional push that these other cornballs get. I advise you listeners to check out Malik's material and judge for your self. This CD is HOT featuring Mr. Mirajj, Carl Thomas, Chantay Savage, Twista, Juice (the list goes on), and the graphics are tight azz hell as well. Malik Yusef is about to get you ready ready! Keep up the good work!

5 out of 5 stars Hottest album of the year!.......2003-12-21

Malik is simply tearing it up on this album. All the tracks are hot, they all have a meaning, and they all make you wanna listen to them too many times. Some of my faves are: Get Ready, Auto-Eroticism, Woman Where Is Your Soul, Wouldn't You Like To, I Spit, and Get Ready (Remix). If you like spoken word or rap, you need to pick this up and in a hurry.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Great!.......2004-04-12

Wow, Mr William S Crane really has a problem with this set.
I just need to clarify a few things....yes, "Anna Lee" is missing, but that's the only one of Elmore James' Fire and Enjoy recordings not included. Everything else which is on the now reissued "King Of The Slide Guitar" box set and not on here is from the Chief sessions, not the Fire, Fury and Enjoy sessions.
Also, the four songs not sung by Elmore are not presented as Elmore-tunes, they merely feature him playing guitar and the fact that Elmore James is not the featured performer is clearly stated on the outside of the box.
The Charly box set "King Of The Slide Guitar" gets the nod over this one because it includes the Chief sides and has slightly better annotation, but to give this set one star is ridiculous.

4 out of 5 stars For collectors. And just blues lovers in general!.......2003-01-03

"For collectors only!" That's what it says at the top right hand corner of the box, and I suppose that is true to some degree. If you're new to the music of Elmore James, you'll probably be better off with a single-disc collection to start you off, but if you've already got the "greatest hits" and want a lot of other good stuff in one place, this is quite a bargain.

"The Complete Fire & Enjoy Recordings" are actually the (more or less) complete Fire, Fury & Enjoy Recordings, three Louisiana based record labels owned by producer Bobby Robinson, the man whose name gave the instrumental "Bobby's Rock" its title.
These three CDs contain almost every important track Elmore James ever recorded, such as "The Sky Is Crying", "Dust My Broom" (in an unsurpassed fully electric version), "Shake Your Moneymaker", "It Hurts Me Too" and "Standing At The Crossroads".

This is hard-rockin' Chicago blues at its very finest, with Elmore James' screaming slide guitar and loud, intense voice at the forefront, and it doesn't get any better.
And this doesn't just showcase the best-known hits. There are great lesser-known tracks here, such as the instrumental slide guitar workout "Up Jumped Elmore", groovy mid-tempo blues numbers such as "She's Got To Go", "So' Nuff I Do", "Mean, Mistreatin' Mama" and "You Know You're Wrong", and funky rockers like "Rollin' & Tumblin'", like "Dust My Broom" an electric updating of a Robert Johnson number.

If you like Elmore James, and electric Chicago blues in general, or just have a thing for a really loud electric slide guitar, this is a must-own, in spite of occational oddities such as the four or five tracks with lead vocals by either drummer/harpist Sam Myers or an "unknown vocalist", and the three takes of "Hand In Hand" and "Find My Kind Of Woman".

(June 11 2003- I should probably add that the superb, five-star box set "King Of The Slide Guitar", which also covers Elmore's early 60s recordings is now back in print. Go get that one!)

    1 out of 5 stars Complete?.......2001-12-20

In spite of the title, this set is not complete. The most glaring omission is Elmore's recording of Anna Lee. They chopped the first 12 bars off at least one other tune and also interspersed mediocre tracks by Sam Meyers and other artists on which Elmore is nowhere to be heard. This period of Elmore's work has some real gems which luckily are available elsewhere. I recommend looking for a used copy of the Capricorn Box Set King of the Slide Guitar. It doesn't include all the alternate takes and false starts but its far better than this Collectables fiasco.

4 out of 5 stars The Myth of Mr. James.......2000-08-31

The myth of Elmore James is what made me fascinated by his music. The "Urban Legend" says that Mr. James agreed to give the devil his soul for the ability to play the guitar. Elmore James is one of the best slide guitarists I have heard. The only problem with this box set is that the songs are somewhat redundant. This set will make you appreciate Blues/Folk guitar.

4 out of 5 stars An eye-opening Prokofiev survey (try to buy it used).......2006-03-26

I can't see paying full price for a two-CD compensdium, even one as lavish as this package, when all the itmes are samples for promoting Universal's catalog (expect a good representation by Ashkenazy, Rostropovich, Previn, and Gergiev). But the selection is good enough and often rare eough to warrant a buy if the price is low.

As I listened straight through, I was surprised at how unacquainted I actually was with the wide extent of Prokofiev's style. From the very early "Dreams," which could be mistaken for Glazunov through the unfamiliar operas (Betrothal in a Monastery Garden, Semyon Kotko) to the final, sadly diminished works like the Seventh Sym. and the cello concerto, the composer covered every major Russian style of the century. I didn't find any new masterful performances--not that a short excerpt is a good enough trial--but everything here is well performced. Any listener should find something unexpected and intriguing in this two-and-a-half-hour traversal.
