Hi, we have been looking for the song Wildflower for a while now and my wife is thrilled that she finally has a copy, right now this is the only CD we seems to be listening to. Most enjoyable if you enjoy the O'Jays, highly recommended

Their best from 1972-78........2007-02-22

Nice collection of the legendary O'Jays 1972-78 recordings. Of course, most of these songs became anthems of the '70s and remain both fresh and timeless to this very day. The partnership which Gamble and Huff, MFSB and The O'Jays formed was a truly dynamic one which gave us some of the greatest Soul Music of all time.

...it definitely has some tunes I don't recall liking so much when they first released then that are must hear jams to me now when I pull the CD from the collection and let ride...like Got to Give The People What They Want and Let Me Make Love to You. My three pieces of trivia about this product are #1 originally it was put out as a two record LP, so it's a bit longer than the average CD. #2 about this time also Eddie Levert and label mate Teddy Pendergrass has a competition going on how many ladies they can effect by their vocal prowess...who knows who one that one...#3 the PI in house band MSFB were cookin' during these years--from their rhythm section so prominent in For the Love of Money to the full orchstra in Sunshine. I Loves MSFB, baby. Anyway, this is a fab product that you will simply love...

Their best collection.......2000-10-08

A boatload of great songs. "Livin' for the Weekend" was the song that started the weekend back in college. It is impossible to sit still, when that starts cooking, or when "I Love Music" opens. "Stairway to Heaven" (which would never be confused with Led Zeppelin's version) along with "Hooks in Me" are among their best love songs.

Gamble & Huff created fantastic music from Philadelphia for a whole new generation of fans. The instrumental backing is tight. Their harmonies are smooth. A lot of wonderful stuff.

The O'Jays are sensational, plain and simple. They can belt out tunes with the best of them, anywhere, anytime. Great songwriting plus great singing means great music and this set is full of awesome songs.

All the hits are here, "Love Train," "For the love of money," "I love music," "Backstabbers."

All the non-hits are great, too. Well, with this group, there's hardly a thing called a non-hit. I love "Stairway to Heaven," which is not the lame song by Led Zepplin, but a slow, soul standard which should've been a radio hit, but wasn't. The last song, "Darlin, Darlin, Baby," is done in the fashion of "Use ta be my girl." It's excellent, as is this whole album.

Landmark anti-war agit-prop and psychedelia.......2002-08-17

Before they burst into mainstream stardom via "Woodstock," Country Joe & The Fish recorded a pair of "talking magazines" -- 7" EPs that were an outgrowth of McDonald's political publication, Rag Baby. The first, recorded in 1965, contains the original versions of a pair of songs that would turn up (in re-recorded form) on the band's debut album. "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag" and "Superbird" are both rendered as folky jug-band tunes, the former overdubbed with war sound effects, and the latter with a directness that bites even harder than the later album take. The flip side of this original EP contained a pair of tunes from folk singer Peter Krug, "Fire in the City" and "Johnny's Gone in the War," each rendered in a straight ahead vocal-and-guitar arrangement.

In 1966 CJ & The Fish cut a second Rag Baby EP. By this time they'd electrified, with the bluesy electric guitar and Farfisa sound that would become familiar on the following year's Vanguard LP debut. Early versions of "Bass Strings" and "Section 43" show the band having made an enormous psychedelic leap from the previous year's outing.

Rounding out the Rag Bay collection is a purpose-built 1971 EP by Country Joe, sans Fish, that was to be sold at a series of anti-war "FTA" (Free the Army) shows to fund the shows and veteran's activities. Few copies apparently made it to shows to be sold (many having been lost or burned!). The tunes, "Kiss My Ass," "Tricky Dicky" and "Free Some Day" are more pointed and politicized than ever, and the arrangements return to the folk and jug-band sounds of the early days.

The Rag Baby EPs have been released several times, first on vinyl, then on CD. The earliest reissue appears to have been a 1980 vinyl LP on a reactivated Rag Baby label; this was re-reissued on CD by Sequel in 1987. Both the LP and CD included the three EP's original ten tracks, plus an alternate version of "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag." In 1997 the One Way label issued a CD that augmented the original ten tracks with two alternates of "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag" as well as a pair of previously unreleased sides ("Who Am I?" and "Dirty Claus Rag") that were recorded at the original 1965 session. The three tracks from the second Rag Baby EP also turned up on Big Beat's "The Berkeley EPs" in 1995.

Of all the reissues, One Way's fourteen-track compendium is the most fully baited hook for Fish fans.

These two dates, done three years apart in the Fifties, have Davis and Sonny Rollins as the linking figures. The historic 1st session, from 1953, is the second and last time Charlie Parker (using the nom de groove 'Charlie Chan') recorded on tenor saxophone. Additionally, this is the only time Parker and one of his most important disciples, Rollins, recorded together. On the extremely moving, seven minute 'Round Midnight', Rollins has the opening & closing bridges, credited in the original notes to Parker. The 1956 date is as mellow and relaxed as the 1953 session was tense and neurotic. Rollins's growth as an individual is readily apparent, and Miles displays his prowess with a Harmon mute on Brubeck's 'In Your Own Sweet Way'. OJC/Fantasy Records.

Miles & Sonny & Bird.......2005-10-15

This CD contains two different recording sessions for Prestige, one made in January 1953, the other in March 1956; both feature Sonny Rollins (ts) (Charlie Parker is also on the earlier date, playing tenor). The 1953 date, thanks to Bird, is controversial: apparently he was pretty sloshed, to Miles' great annoyance. Both men play better solos than ensemble passages; in fact, the solo work on COMPULSION is very impressive.

In general, the three sides made in '56 are better. Their version of Dave Brubeck's IN YOUR OWN SWEET WAY is excellent - everyone plays beautifully. The other two tunes are blues; NO LINE is exactly that: it sounds like it starts in the middle of a piece and ends on a fade. Rollins seems greatly motivated to play as lyrically as Miles on this date. A good CD, worth getting.

This is a Highly enjoyable Disc.The Music is Breathtaking.it has so much depth&tone.Bird,Miles&Rollins on one set that alone takes your mind away.all the Great Musicians featured here along with Miles make this a Must have.

Top performance by Miles and Rollins.......2000-01-26

The music from two different sessions are presented on this CD. On the first, a rather nervy session, we can hear Charlie Parker on tenor. It is a very interesting session, but what makes this such a wonderful record is the music from the other, almost completely unrehearsed session, with Sonny Rollins, Tommy Flanagan, Paul Chambers and Art Taylor.

This quintet is simply great. There is no finer trumpet or tenor playing to be heard anywhere else. My favorite is the slow Vierd blues where Miles and Rollins play such relaxed, beautiful solos. So does Flanagan, for that matter.

This is improvisation at its finest in a seemingly very relaxed atmosphere. A marvellous session!

Miles's work during a dark period of his life.......1999-10-27

These tracks are taken from recordings he made in the early fifties, when he was banned from playing in most venues due to his heroin addiction. Charlie Parker plays tenor on a few tracks and it's a good CD. A must have for Miles Davis fans.

Album Description

Most of this early material was originally released between 1965 and 1971 as extended play 7 inch singles that accompanied Rag Baby magazine as cheap promotion for anti-war sentiments (Rag Baby was a left wing pamphlet magazine). This is worth checking out for the alternative versions of songs like 'I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixing-To-Die-Rag' that later showed up on their Vanguard albums. Special packaging in a deluxe box with original EP envelopes, music sheets & lyrics, plus the history of the Talling Issue Fanzine. 10 tracks.

This is all you need to know of the three rag baby eps. No needles additions that you always skip, just all the historical stuff. Very good "alternative" 60's sound. Beautiful pakked with all the lyrics, EP-covers and other liner notes.

One of my favourite 60's items.
