Lay in a good round of cosmopolitans, ditch the rug and get ready to turn 2004 into 1944 with these retro swing kings. In an album where horns are king, the Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Christmas disc will please fans and remind the elders that the big band sound has not left the building. While singer Scotty Morris is a bit too mannered at times, he does an adequate job of covering the Yule's coolest, including "Blue Christmas," "Merry Christmas Baby" and "Is Zat You Santa Claus?" and can write a seasonal tune worth returning to every year: Highlights include Morris' own "Rockabilly Christmas," the timeless "Christmas Time in Tinsel Town" and "Last Night (I Went Out with Santa Claus)." But with the Daddy's baritone sax master Karl Hunter blazing and the rhythm section fanning the yule log on "Jingle Bells (Cha Cha)," this might be the disc to jumpstart your holiday party -- even before Thanksgiving dinner gets in the oven. --Martin KellerCustomer Reviews:

Call him the retro Sinatra, the keeper of the big band flame, the swingin' piano man, but Harry Connick Jr., remains one of New Orleans' treasures. His second Christmas CD is as much a salute to his hometown musical roots as it is to the season. Filled with second-line arrangements and fierce horn charts that could blow all that holiday chill back to Canada, Connick's latest revisits upbeat standards such as "Frosty The Snowman," "Blue Christmas," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," and others. Most swing and romp, but the hymns are given the reverential vocal treatment that Connick is known for on his more secular love ballads. Surprises include a quirky arrangement of "Silver Bells," in what sounds all the world like a Henry Mancini score for an action film. And there's four Connick originals that don't quite match the level of the covers, except for what must be the oddest pairing of talents all season, the duet with country singer George Jones on "Nothin' New For the New Year," an inspired tune and performance from two master stylists. There's nothing quite as lasting as the chestnut he penned on his first Christmas CD, "I Pray on Christmas," but for fans, here's a merry Harry N'awlins holiday love fest. --Martin KellerCustomer Reviews:

Question: Do you like delightful, soulful music, with a jazzy New Orleans flair? Then you'll love it. Plain and Simple. It's fun. It's romantic. It's Hymnal. And yes: the Big-Band arrangements are quite cool.
If you simply love good music, and want a nice change of pace, from the usual dull Christmas recording, give it a try. Oh, sorry: give it MORE THAN ONE try!
"Decorations Of Red On A Green Christmas Tree . . .They Won't Mean A Thing . . . If You're Not Here With Me".......2006-12-15
"I'll have a blue Christmas, that's certain
And when that blue heartache starts hurtin'
You'll be doin' all right with your Christmas of white
But I'll have a blue, blue Christmas."
Whether you'll have a white or a blue Christmas, this colorful Christmas CD, "Harry For The Holidays" is a great listen and just perfect for the holidays. It's a Christmas present by itself, you'll be listening to a mixture of traditional and contemporary Christmas songs, some of them are from Harry Connick Jr.'s creative pen - "The Happy Elf," "I'm Gonna Be The First One," "Nothin' New For New Year" and "I Come With Love." Like all of his recordings and a rarity among artists, he ingeniously arranged, orchestrated and conducted all the music on this wonderful Christmas collection, which he dedicated to his mother, Anita.
Harry Connick Jr. sings with childlike enthusiasm "Frosty The Snowman" and a song that all kids from "one to ninety-two" so loved, "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town."
The nostalgically-charged "I'll Be Home For Christmas" is sung in a very hopeful fashion. There's something so beautiful in its arrangement and that sax solo by Ned Goold is so beguilingly spotless and Harry Connick Jr.'s vocal artistry is, as always, so remarkably marvelous.
Dance the waltz to "The Christmas Waltz" if you would - it's a great song and he made it danceable with its arrangement, so show off your dancing skills. The dazzling sax and trombone from soloists Jerry Weldon and Mark Mullins add to its sparkle.
The saddest song from this collection is Billy Hayes & Jay Johnson's "Blue Christmas." Its vintage-sounding-arrangement is reminiscent of the sounds of the fifties, that of Elvis Presley's version. His rendition is melodically fabulous yet lyrically melancholy.
The traditional songs are "Silver Bells," "I Wonder As I Wander," "O Little Town Of Bethlehem" and "Silent Night."
This is a nice stocking-stuffer and one of the most remarkable Christmas CDs of all-time. Give it a listen, you'll be delighted with all the songs and you'll surely appreciate Harry Connick Jr.'s musical versatility.
Have the Merriest Christmas ever and the Happiest New Year to one and all!
"Let kindness come with every gift, and good desires with every greeting." ~ Robert Louis Stevenson ~
Mediocre - better Christmas music out there.......2006-12-12
But Harry's singing is unispired and just not solid, as if he recorded it in one take. Some of the songs are not so great either, making it a middle-of-the-road-performance CD.

Amazon.com essential recording
This 1957 recording is a performance of heightened expression, with Billie Holiday able to shift the mood and meaning of these very familiar songs with the slightest inflection of pitch and time, her phrasing the equal of any great jazz instrumentalist. Her slight alterations to the melody of "Stars Fell on Alabama" suggest more complex texts of song swimming just below the lyric. The tunes feature solos by Roy Eldridge, Ben Webster, and Barney Kessel. Throughout are highlights of shared creativity, while "They Can't Take That Away from Me" is a masterpiece of late swing. --Stuart BroomerCustomer Reviews:
Unbelievable delivery!.......2003-11-11
lady at her best.......2002-09-04
A late-period Billie album, but voice is still in good shape.......2002-06-16
The original album only contained 6 songs, kind of skimpy even for 1957, but those 6 songs were all longer than 4 minutes, so time constraints probably were the reason for that. Thanks to Verve Records' extensive reissue campaign, DISTINGUE is stretched out to 12 songs with 6 other songs cherry-picked from other albums. Naturally, old standards & Great American Songbook entries are the order of the day, but Billie proves even the best-worn songs are ripe for a reinvention & on DISTINGUE, she does an excellent job as always.
Definitely the most represented songwriters on the album are George & Ira Gershwin & their always sophisticated tunes are rendered even more so thanks to Billie's gently-nuanced delivery. Only "A Foggy Day" was on the original album, while "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off" (taken at a brisk, very jazz-like tempo) & "They Can't Take That Away From Me" (probably the Gershwins' most sophisticated song) appeared on BODY & SOUL. "Love Is Here To Stay" was first found on ALL OR NOTHING AT ALL. With the Gershwins having been the epitome of class & elegance, their material goes hand in hand with Miss Holiday, who always exuded those qualities even during the darkest hours of her life.
Cole Porter's "Just One Of Those Things" (an original album entry) is given a new lease on life thanks to Billie, proving no matter how many times a song has been done by as many artists, Billie makes it sound like it's being sung for the very first time. Rodgers & Hart's "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" (on the original) is given a very torch-song-based delivery, hinting at the just-plain-downhearted atmosphere of LADY IN SATIN. Johnny Mercer's (who also did a fair amount of recording on his own, making him one of the first singer-songwriters) "Day In, Day Out" & "One For My Baby [And One More For The Road]" (all on the original album) are given epic arrangements that are often longer than Billie's vocals, but the music is so accessible & warm, they allow you to just let it run.
Other songs are written by people not as famous on a level as the previously-mentiond writers, but perhaps the songs themselves are well-known anyway. "Stars Fell On Alabama" (original album), "I Wished On The Moon" (on ALL OR NOTHING AT ALL & co-written by playwright Dorothy Parker), "Body & Soul" (on the album of the same name) & Moonlight In Vermont" (also on BODY & SOUL and probably well-known thanks to its constant cover versions) show the equal footing on which Billie & her band are making them stars on the same bill.
By the time Billie Holiday made SONGS FOR DISTINGUE LOVERS in 1957, she was 42 years old, but had lived quite a lot in that relatively short amount of time. Because her voice was still in pretty good shape at this time, how it almost deteriorated by the time of LADY IN SATIN was definitely a shocker. Those who care to dive into Billie's later work may want to try SONGS FOR DISTINGUE LOVERS on for size before being brave enough to go for LADY IN SATIN (I did the opposite, to tell you the truth). Nevertheless, if you want music that's "distingue" all over (the music, the lyrics, the vocals, the songwriters), look no further than this.
The Contrary.......2001-05-13
After reading some of the other reviews I feel like I missed something. Because, to me, she sounds tired and flat on this record, not her usual tricky, flirting, powerful self. The arrangements are too slick, too...tired, for me.
Billie's Voice Well-Aged and Mellow.......2000-12-31
This music sounds best late at night--the album has a club feel. The band's accompaniment is perfectly appropriate to that unique instrument they are supporting, Lady Day's voice. The solos are more on the melody than the chords, but since Billie was a pre-Bop singer, this is good. In spite of the accessible nature of the playing, this is not pop-Jazz. Ella Fitzgerald's songbook series for the same label is. Billie, unlike Ella, didn't move comfortably between pop and Jazz. Her late Verve sides are better than the listenable but misguided and overrated _Lady in Satin_ on Columbia. Strings didn't complement her voice as well as a small, tight jazz group. Ella, unlike Billie, could sing credibly in either context.
It should be noted that these performances are also available on the 2 disc set _All or Nothing at All_, but _Songs for Distingue Lovers_ is more beautifully packaged, replicating the original album's artwork and containing insightful 1997 liner notes from James Patrick in addition to a reproduction of the original liner notes. If you have a lover, give him/her a copy of this disc. There's someone I want to give it to, but I don't think she'd accept it, and perhaps this makes the forlorn voice of these tunes sound all the more fabulous.

A Must For Boston Pops Lovers.......2003-12-04
The collections greatest strength is the lush sound of the orchestra and Lockhart's excellent handling of the ensemble. No matter what he selected as music for this album, it probably would have worked rather well. The track has a "Gloria" that was commissioned by the Boston Symphony. There are also familiar arrangements in the style associated with the Boston Pops of Christmas waltzes, a track called "Frosty All the Way," "Good Swing Wenceslas," and perhaps the best track on the disc "Tomorrow Is My Dancing Day." The chorus adds to numbers such as "The shepherd's Chorus," "Sleigh Ride," and John William's "Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas" from HOME ALONE 2.
Lockhart's style differs greatly from the legendary Arthur Fiedler and his successor John Williams, but for those who love the Boston Pops, especially at Christmastime, will not have a complete collection without this disc.
Thank you, Keith Lockhart.......2001-12-05
This CD is an excellent compilation of the Boston Pops at its finest. From the opening "Gloria" to "Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas," each selection has its own unique touch applied to it. My favorites are "Gloria," "Christmas Waltzes," "Carol of the Bells," "The Shepherds' Chorus," "Christmas Time Is Here," and the swinging compilation "Frosty All The Way!"
He also presents a different version of the tune "Sleigh Ride," long a Pops Holiday staple, but I still think it sounds better without the lyrics. Fortunately, I have other recordings by Fiedler and Williams of this work. But other than this, it's a great CD overall. Thank you, Keith Lockhart, for keeping the tradition of great holiday music going. Your orchestra certainly has the timelessness that Mannheim Steamroller will never have.

Enchanting Christmas Classics For All To Hear.......2006-12-02
Nat King Cole provides exceptional renditions of well known classics for all ages to hear. The tracks that include Cole and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, "Mr. Santa Claus," ""Take Me Back To Toyland," "Frosty The Snowman," "The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot" and the King Cole Trio, "There's a Train Out For Dreamland," will delight the young listeners as well as leave a lasting impression with the quintessential classic, "All I Want For Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth)". "The Little Christmas Tree" may remind one about "A Charlie Brown Christmas." Listeners may want to do a little jig or two with "The Happiest Christmas Tree." There are also the legendary songs of Christmas, "I Saw Three Ships," "A Cradle in Bethlehem," "Away In a Manger," and "Silent Night." And to end the cd, there is "Brahms Lullaby" to take all to dreamland with sugarplums dancing in their head.
The unique aspect about all the tracks is their storytelling quality. As an added treat, the liner notes include a short story about a man and his dog, Mystery, and their story about meaning of Christmas, which was written by Carole Cole. And as part of the storyline, all the songs on the cd are embedded within the story.
CHRISTMAS FOR KIDS: FROM ONE TO NINETY TWO celebrates the spirit of Christmas. As the title states, the cd is recommended for everyone young and old alike who never grow tired of listening to the sounds of the season.
Nat IS Christmas.......2005-12-09
Every song is great!
An honest and true CHRISTMAS CD...with definite adult appeal.......2002-11-12
This definitely stands above most currently available Christmas CDs. Since the most recent track was recorded in 1960, there sure isn't anything new, but there are several that aren't familiar.
Nat "King" Cole is one of the great "smooth" singers, and if you don't appreciate smooth singers, this isn't for you. But if you have respect for the days and the output of such as Crosby, Como, and others, you'll want him in your Christmas collection.
The set starts with a lively rendition of the traditional "I Saw Three Ships", followed by the soft and mellow "A Cradle In Bethlehem." Then comes the recording which, for me, is second only to Bing's "White Christmas" as the all-time great of the "popular" Christmas songs. I refer, of course, to King Cole's recording of "The Christmas Song".
None of these songs should be slighted, but I especially want to call attention to:
"Take Me Back To Toyland", definitely a song with meaning, the longing of an adult for a simpler and happier time.
"Frosty, The Snowman", one of the happiest child centered Christmas songs, given great treatment here.
"The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot", a sentimental song done by earlier singers given a very tender and meaningful treatment here. This is a situation that of course is just as true and common a one as it was when it was first composed. Compassion and realization along with the will to eliminate such unhappiness many children experience is called for here.
"All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth" became a great novelty hit by Spike Jones and the City Slickers, but was recorded by many others. Nat King Cole's is one of the best of the straighter versions of the song.
"Silent Night". I have never attempted to formulate a list of the ten greatest recordings of this song. I do make it clear elsewhere which singer I believe presents the most beautiful and the most fully spiritual version of this song, but my own top ten list would almost certainly include Bing's, Pavarotti's, Anne Murray's, and King Cole's recordings, not necessarily in that order, in the 2nd-10th spots.
"Brahms' Lullaby" isn't a Christmas song, but it sure appears on a number of Christmas CDs. Although a melody composed by one of the greatest of the classical composers, it lends itself well to the smooth treatment given it here.
Yes, this CD has songs that kids like, but is also one of the best ever Christmas CDs for us grown-ups too.
I was so happy to find this CD.......2002-11-06
