Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

Long time Echo fans, here is a great CD for your collection.......2006-12-07

Being an Echo fan for over 20 years and being priviledged to see them twice in concert in NYC I will say this is a great live album. Although the venue this was recorded from is obviously for the making of the CD (no one cheers when the songs from the album "Siberia" are sung) it is a well put together concert. Even though Ian's voice cracks and strains (too much smoke and drink?) he can still sing the Bunny tunes! A must have for Bunny fans!

A sound of it's own.......2005-11-05

Hampton Hawes has always been one of my favorite pianists. He had a warm fire in his playing that would connect to his audience. This is an extension of the HAWES of the 50's. A Live date cut in 1966 finds him stretching out and really getting into the material with
great support from Red Mitchell & Donald Bailey. This along with it's counterpart, THE SENACE(more intense), are great samples of jazz piano in the 60's - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I consider myself lucky. Lucky to have spent the last nine years in a city as extraordinarily beautiful as Montréal, and the fact that I've been active in my chosen field here is merely icing on the cake. Coming from New York as I had, I was unaccustomed to unsolicited offers of help and encouragement, the business there being so difficult to penetrate. The very notion that an organization as illustrious as the CBC would offer to record my music in their amazing facilities without my having to plead, bargain, or levy threats would have been laughable at best. And yet, my involvement in Montreal's music scene brought about exactly that.

On not one, but two occasions I have been treated to the studio and careful attentions of producer Alain de Grosbois, whose countless sessions for Jazz Beat are no less than legendary. Together with hostess Katie Malloch, he creates an environment where music is free to flow. Jazz Beat regularly presents Canadian artists in this fashion, and in doing so, helps cultivate our nation's musical resources. They are the reason you have this music in your hands right now, and of that I am truly grateful.

I invite you to enjoy this selection of recordings from what were extremely pleasurable dates. The songs are well written, the musicians superb, and the vibe is happening. When you've finished, I think you'll see why I'm All Smiles... live from studio 13.

Great disc for lovers of pop/jazz vocals.......2001-02-04

Shades of Torme, Hartman, Etta Jones, and so on. The guy has a huge range and uses his instrument well, selects material slightly off the beaten path, and you'll be impressed with the backing by a crack group of Canadian jazzers. Recorded with top notch production values at the studios of CBC radio in Montreal. If you can take a chance on a relatively unknown artist, I'd say go for it with this one.

Once again, Kathleen Holeman has demonstrated that she belongs in the company of so many of today's great female jazz singers. With "I'm All Smiles," her second CD, she shows a maturity of sound and technique that improves on her earlier effort of two years ago. Among the strong cuts are the title track, "I'm All Smiles," the soulful ballad "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most," and the Cole Porter standard "In the Still of the Night." Backed by the talented quartet of Bob Branstetter on bass, Paul Smith on piano, Al Wiley on drums and Ron Fleeman on guitar, Kathleen turns simple phrasing and interpretation into great jazz with a consistently powerful vocal response, including a few instances of good old-fashioned scatting. A few other musicians help her along the way. "I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart" features the fiddling expertise of Terry Brock and "Close Enough for Love" draws together some outstanding Kansas City-area horns. But as it should be, this CD is about the unvarnished vocal strengths of Kathleen Holeman - clear, comfortable, close. If you listen attentively enough, you'll wonder if she's singing to you. As she did with her first CD, Kathleen wrote one of the cuts, a cute, things-happen kind of tune called "Smile All the While." Is this girl talented? You bet, and then some. In all, this CD is a fine opportunity to meet a busy, lovely jazz singer on her way to the stratosphere.
