5 out of 5 stars One of his best live recordings - really!.......2001-09-18

The live record "Yours and Mine" (and its companion "Soul Eyes") are valuable and remarkable additions to the vast legacy of one of the greatest saxophone players in Jazz history. The two records contain 12 tunes Getz and his quartet recorded in Glasgow, Scotland, in June 1989 and 3 additional tracks from a gig in Denmark, recorded a month later. The liner notes state that the Glasgow date was "one of the days when everything was working", that puts it in a nutshell. Getz was in a great mood (listen to his zany comments after the first tune) and his superior talent got the necessary kick to yield a truly memorable record. So far, I considered "The Dolphin" his ultimate live record, but "Yours and Mine" is even better. He shines on ballads like "Yours and Mine" and "People Time", on up tempo rousers like "What Is This Thing Called Love" and on "Joanne Julia", a lovely reminiscence of his Bossa Nova days, when Getz became the most successful jazz musician in history. So, just sit back and relax and let an old friend soothe your soul with his utterly absorbing tone. This is a marvelous hour of Stan Getz at his best. Just great, if you are a Getz fan, and an incomparable experience if you're new to Stan Getz. You're in for a treat!

Charlie Byrd is much more than a famed and significant exponent of the Brazilian song. Owner of an immense power of lyrical expression, he also shone with brilliant intensity in the classic universe.

This album is a forceful evidence of what I mean. Convince by yourself and listen him. Byrd and Baden Powell were without hesitation the majuscule Ambassadors of the Brazilian guitar in the last half century.

A true gem.

5 out of 5 stars A toe-tapper if there ever was one!.......2003-03-17

This might be one of the five best live performances ever recorded. It has everything going for it - lots of audience participation, a great trio of jazz players (headed up by one of the greatest bassists of all time), and near state-of-the-art sound quality. Did I mention that every song on the CD gives you a taste of the artists' versatility?

But the best is yet to come. The session starts out with three great renditions of some bossa nova standards - Blue Bossa, Bossa Nova Do Marilla and Manhã De Carnaval (from Black Orpheus) - and a really nice St. Louis Blues. Then things really start swinging when Carl Jefferson (the record label's founder) introduces the MAIN ATTRACTION of this set: the incomparably magnificent Miss Ernestine Anderson. She starts cooking with an up-tempo Fly Me To The Moon that evokes a flurry of cheers and whistles from the crowd, followed by the real jaw-dropper on the album, the most soulful Georgia On My Mind you're likely to hear... ever!

No doubt about it, this is one of the greatest recordings that Concord Jazz ever produced. It makes me one happy fella every time I hear it. Buy it and let Ernestine convince you too that she is one of the few of the greatest jazz vocalists to appear since Ella, Billie or Sarah. I promise you, she is THAT good!

5 out of 5 stars big band jazz at its best.......2002-03-18

This album should be a primer for junior high & high school jazz bands starting out. This is the way it should swing. I first heard Woody at Disneyland where his talents were wasted. I went out & bought King Cobra & The Raven Speaks, both excellent albums, Grammy winners at that, but I love this album & especially Midnite Run. All the songs are good but I play Midnite Run again & again. It gives me goosebumps each time I hear it. This group is not called a "Thundering Herd" but it should 'a' been or maybe it's lightning. Get it,it's hot. I got it on lp so should sound even better on cd.

5 out of 5 stars Woody Herman: Live At The Concord Jazz Festival.......2000-02-18

This is a great jazz album...particularly John Brown's Other Body. This is a kickin chart that you'll love. This is a must own album to add to your jazz collection!

5 out of 5 stars Typical Scott Hamilton.......Synonymous For Excellent!.......2004-02-01

This was his 25th album for the Concord label, the first being in 1977. The man makes playing tenor sax seem so effortless that I think the critics tend to view his playing with an air of nonchalance, i.e. the usual level.....no new ground. Let's face it.....whether Scott plays a beautiful ballad or an uptempo tune, the fluidity and flawless execution of his improvisation and expression after so many years tend to make one expect nothing less.......it has become a benchmark! The proof is in the listening......and whether or not his style of swing or mainstream jazz appeals to your ear. For me, I know I have more than half of his releases in my collection.

This cd has a nice mix of tempos, and for my book, the man can't be beat on a ballad!......maybe Harry Allen is in that category.

This is a typical Scott Hamilton set, one that will be appreciated by tenor sax aficonados, good jazz quartets. mainstream or swing either singly or in any combination. You can't go wrong with music by Scott Hamilton!!

Relatively early Concord release for Bellson, and a swinging affair it is. Hard bop trumpeter Blue Mitchell is particularly fine, as is Pete Christlieb on tenor. Miles Davis's "Dig" gets a swinging 9 minute workout. A good album that most people should enjoy.
