Amazon.com essential recording

There has never been a better showcase for improvisational rock than this 1971 concert recording, and few (if any) live rock albums are in its rank. With only two studio albums (and plenty of touring) under their belt, the Georgia sextet tore into the Fillmore East with road-tested buoyancy. Titanic guitarist Duane Allman was at the peak of his powers, pushing his foil, Dickey Betts, to unsurpassed peaks. Vocalist-keyboardist Gregg Allman would have been a star in any other setting; here he's merely one more component in a brilliant ensemble. Duane Allman died shortly after At Fillmore East shipped, and the Brothers haven't scaled such heights since. But, then, neither has anyone else. --Steven Stolder

4 out of 5 stars legendary.......2007-05-17

I purchased this album to replace the one on LP. If you are a person who enjoys true southern rock , you shouldn't be without a copy of this one. Some of this work is at a level you will never hear again. Absolutely superb!

5 out of 5 stars Duane, We Hardly Knew Ye.......2007-04-01

A spectacular collection of live jamming from the Brothers. IMHO Duane is the greatest lead guitar player ever. Hendrix was a spectacular virtuoso who could do things that no other player could. Clapton and the other contenders, tremendous technically, but Duane was in a league of his own in being able to communicate with his axe. To hear lead guitar at its best, go no further than this magnificent set!

4 out of 5 stars Great live album but not the best out there.......2007-03-04

I've always been a fan of blues oriented rock music- especially live recorded music. This album is exceptional, no doubt, although I have to disagree with some of the previous reviews. I used to own this cd but gave it up after giving it a few tries. After reading these reviews I gave it another try. The sound quality is great and the performance is great too, but not the ultimate live album I was expecting. If you want to get some excellent electrified live blues rock music I'd recommend Rory Gallagher's Irish Tour or Ten Years After's Live at Fillmore East. Bottom line, buy The Allman Brothers at Fillmore East but don't expect it to be the best live album you've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Is there some way I can give it more than 5 stars?.......2007-01-12

It's almost pointless to add another 5-star review to this album. This is way beyond the categories of "Southern rock" (Lynyrd Skynyrd and Molly Hatchet belong in that dubious realm) and "blues rock" (hate to sound politically incorrect, but there's never been a blues performer or band that's even come close to what these guys were capable of). Duane Allman's slide guitar squalls with the kind of expression that will put the fear of God into you and make you forget, for a moment, who Jimi Hendrix was.

Kiddies, this is what rock concerts used to be. Never mind! This is too real for you. Go back to blogging about how great fill-in-the-blank is.

5 out of 5 stars Best live album, but there's more!.......2007-01-11

This Live album has been the standard for all others to be measured by for over 30 years. Every musician is at the top of his game. Duane Allman's guitar playing still reveals new thrills after 3 decades of listening. Dickey Betts does a great job of keeping up. (To tell them apart, Duane's guitar is a little smoother and seems to sing.) This recording still feels fresh and vital. You do not need to be a southern rock or blues fan to enjoy the music. However, do yourself a favor and opt for double The Fillmore Concerts instead. The recording mix is a little more balanced and there are some alternate takes that pack the discs with over 130 minutes of music. If you agree (and you most likely will) that this is the best live album, then the additional music on the additional disc is the second best live labum. With the extended album you will get a deeper appreciation for a band that played until the sun rose. This is not an album to be mixed into an iPod shuffle. Relax, sit down with your favorite beverage and immerse yourself. The music will take you away.

It might not strike one listening to the music on this collection--smoothly crafted, perfectly harmonized pop often set to gently loping swing rhythms--that the Mills Brothers were actually outstanding pioneers of black music. Their close harmony work, based on the barbershop quartets of a previous era, were an innovation in '30s popular music, arguably laying the groundwork for '50s doo-wop and by extension even the music of the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync (but don't hold that against them!). This collection serves as a good introduction to the Mills Brothers' legacy, serving up a dozen of their infectious hits, a few of which ("Lazy River," "You Always Hurt the One You Love") still stand among the definitive renditions of the classic American songbook. And what other band has had a seven-decade career (their sons, nephews, and grandsons now filling the ranks), scoring Top 40 hits ("Paper Doll" and "Cab Driver") 46 years apart? --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Fun music.......2002-08-31

This is a great CD to cheer yourself up with. The Mills Brothers are always good, and these songs are some of their best. Buy it and save it for those days when things feel bad...you will be whistling by the end.

4 out of 5 stars "one of the oldest and long-lasting acts".......2000-04-14

Originally billed as "Four Boys and a Guitar", John Mills Sr. and is four sons John Jr., Herbert, Harry and Donald grew into one of the oldest and long-lasting acts in American popular music. His sons learned close harmony and the knack to immulate musical instruments with their voices and began broadcasting over Cincinnati radio stations in the late '20s.

In 1943 came one of their biggest hits - "PAPER DOLL" a sweet and intimate ballad stayed twelve weeks on top of the charts, sold six million records plus sheet music. The group made appearances in several films during the early '40s, and hit number one again in 1944 with "YOUR ALWAYS HURT THE ONE YOU LOVE". Another chart topper - "THE GLOW WORM" (1952) - plus additional hits with - "BE MY LIFE'S COMPANION" (1951) and "CAB DRIVER" (1967) which reached the charts, competing with rock n' roll groups such as The Beatles and of course "The King"-Elvis.

"The 20th Century Masters" presents another "The Millenium Collection" in an ongoing series featuring top artists and groups of our time in musical history. No other label has been more supportive of the talent and legacy that has made American Music the most popular in the world today.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2000-03-25

I would've given this collection five stars if it weren't for the last four songs. I'm something of a purist when it comes to the Mills Brothers and much prefer the "four boys and a guitar" style of their early work. On songs like "Paper Doll", and "Across the Alley from the Alamo" the brothers sound fantastic. Unfortunately, classics like "Glow Worm" are lost amidst the sound of the big band behind them. The version of "Cab Driver" on this album is apparently from their "country" period. I preferred earlier versions much more. The album is worth buying for the first seven songs alone, but look elsewhere if you want to hear the rest as they should be done.

4 out of 5 stars The Bees Knees.......2007-05-13

This is a great album. It has all of the Mills Bros. Favorites and the recordings are clear and well produced. If you buy one Mills Brothers album, this is the one to have. I'd also recommend Command Performance as a great record.

4 out of 5 stars Classic!.......2006-11-17

I bought this album for my 82 year-old grandmother who hadn't heard this music in decades. Needless to say she loved it. Surprisingly though I love listening to it too. Great voices and innocent writing. It is good to listen to pioneers and see where Black music has gone through the decades. Great buy!

5 out of 5 stars "22 Great Hits by The Mills Brothers".......2005-09-09

I purchased this CD because it included several songs I had wanted for a long time, but upon listening to the entire disc, I was very pleasantly surprised to recognize other songs I liked that I didn't know were by the Mills Brothers, and also some songs I'd never heard at all but liked immediately. The Mills Brothers have such a nice, easy-going style, and the quality of their musicianship comes through in each and every song. The album also covers their very long career - from about 1929 right up through the 1960s - and though the styles may change, the level of their quality is always top-notch. I highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys songs from those eras.

3 out of 5 stars Not Quite.......2005-02-22

I would like to learn how singers, not just the Mills Brothers, can record songs for a certain record company, collect their royalties and then some years later re-record them (after their old contract is up?) and come up with a tired lackluster "too-good-to-be-true" compilation that doesn't match the first versions at all in performance. But here you have it. If you have no recollection of the originals, these will do for you; if you're looking for the old orchestrations (the guitar should fall in right here) and gusto, forget it. Try another compilation.

5 out of 5 stars familiar melodies, wonderful harmonies.......2004-06-30

The Mills Brothers started back in 1922, and their musical magic lasted through generations of music lovers. This CD was released in 1985, and I imagine the recordings hail from the 1957-81 period, when Herb, Harry, and Don (pictured on the cover) worked as a trio, appearing on popular TV shows and touring the country. Though the sound reflects a little age, it is nevertheless quite good.
In this compilation, you get updated versions of their first huge hit from 1931, "Tiger Rag", which features some terrific scat singing, their biggest mega-hit from '43, "Paper Doll", and their last # 1 hit from '52, "Glow Worm", as well as their last single to hit the charts in 1968, "Cab Driver".

One of my favorite songs is "Daddy's Little Girl", and their rendition is fabulous, and makes the most of its glorious melody and sweet, sentimental lyrics. Other choice tracks are "Lazy River, the wistful "You Always Hurt the One You Love", and "Cooney Island Washboard", which features some superb honkey tonk piano playing.
Smooth and lighthearted, this is truly great American music. The Mills Brothers were musical pioneers, and deserve their legendary status and their title as "America's Musical Ambassadors to the World"
Total running time is 58'40.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST RE-RELEASED ISSUE OF THE LEGENDARY FILLMORE EAST CONCERTS TO DATE........2007-03-26

I will be writing a review on the legendary historic live Two-CD Deluxe Edition set album entitled "THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND AT FILLMORE EAST" by one of Rock's most greatest legendary bands ever. I give you one of America's favorite sons and one of Jacksonville, Florida's pride and joy's, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND. "THE ALLMAN BROTHERS AT FILLMORE EAST" was originally released in 1971 on Vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the Capricorn Records label. This new special Two-CD Deluxe Edition was originally re-released in 2003 on the Mercury Records Label in association with The Island Def Jam Music Group which is distributed by Universal Music & Video Distribution Corp. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary live album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND are truly one of the early pioneers of Southern Rock music joining the ranks of legendary bands such as LYNYRD SKYNYRD, THE CHARLIE DANIELS BAND and THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND. When brother's Gregg Allman on organ, piano and vocals and the late great Duane Allman on lead and slide guitars met up and joined forces with Dickey Betts on lead guitar, the late great Berry Oakley on bass, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson on drums, congas and timbales and Butch Trucks on drums and tympani, the line-up would be complete and THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND would be born to Rock. The band would release two albums prior to "THE ALLMAN BROTHERS AT FILLMORE EAST" album to critically high acclaim raves. But it was live in concert that THE ALLMAN BROTHERS band would really get the lead out and shine resulting in raising the south and making it proud. In my opinion, "THE ALLMAN BROTHERS AT THE FILLMORE EAST" is one of the greatest concerts and live albums ever recorded. This legendary concert is another one of Rock's greatest moments during one of Rock's finest hours. It is also my opinion that this legendary concert stands as a true testament of the greatness and musical genius of six extremely talented individuals and a fine fitting tribute to a great band that was indeed, ahead of their time.

It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music speak for itself and do all of the talking. PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS ANOTHER GREAT LIVE ALBUM THAT SHOULD BE PLAYED EXTREMELY LOUD. DISC ONE of this legendary live album begins with the blasting Southern Blues Rocker "Statesboro Blues," the fast paced Southern Rocker "Trouble No More," the blistering killer Southern Rocker "Don't Keep Me Wonderin'," the incredible Elmore James rendition Blues classic "Done Somebody Wrong," the slow and beautiful T-Bone Walker rendition Blues classic "Stormy Monday," the legendary groundbreaking Southern Blues Rocker "One Way Out," the thirteen minute slow soothing and beautiful Southern Rocker "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed," the breathtaking nineteen minute Southern Rocker "You Don't Love Me" and the forever amazing ALLMAN BROTHERS trademark mild Southern Rocker "Midnight Rider." END OF DISC ONE.

DISC TWO begins with the guitar screeching and blasting "Hot 'Lanta," the twenty-three minute merciless killer Southern Rocker "Whipping Post," the unbelievable thirty-four minute Jazz and Southern Rocker "Mountain Jam" and the slow Blues number "Drunken Hearted Boy." May I also add that Duane Allman's blistering slide guitar playing is the true stuff of legend. Also, both Duane Allman's and Dickey Betts' blistering guitar licks and riffs were sizzlin' red hot and on fire during the recording of these live shows. YOU HAVE TO HEAR THIS CONCERT TO BELIEVE IT.

Overall, this is one hell of a legendary live album worth seeking further into and checking out especially if you are a diehard ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND fan or a devout music collector. As for the newcomers or new beginners to the sound and music of THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, I would definitely buy this album. YOU WON'T BE SORRY.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary historic live album to own a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary live album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great live album that no music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.

In closing, "THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND AT FILLMORE EAST" would be released to highly critical acclaim and be hailed as one of the greatest live albums ever recorded. At this point in the band's career, all was well in THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND until tragedy struck. Following the release of their live album, guitarist Duane Allman would die in a motorcycle accident on 29 October 1971. To make matters worse, the following year, bass player Berry Oakley would also die in a motorcycle accident on 11 November 1972. However, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND would persevere and carry on in order to keep the memory and legend alive of both Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND have continued to release new albums and perform to sell out audiences the world over to this very day. In 1995, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND received the highest ultimate honor of being inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall Of Fame. With that in mind, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND has left their mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you late great Duane, Gregg, Dickey, late great Berry, Jaimoe and Butch. Thanks for the great memories. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. DUANE ALLMAN LIVES. BERRY OAKLEY LIVES. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND RULES. R.I.P DUANE ALLMAN, Born 20 November 1946, Died 29 October 1971 at age 25. Also R.I.P BERRY OAKLEY, Born 4 April 1948, Died 11 November 1972 at age 24. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars The Allman Brothers Band at their peak!!!.......2007-02-14

"The Allman Brothers Band at the Fillmore East" has been long regarded as one of the greatest live albums of all time. Indeed by the time 1971 rolled around, the ABB was on a musical roll honening their musical chops to perfection. When they hit the Fillmore East for the recording of this album, the band was definitely on fire.
The original release of the "Fillmore East" album (which is still available as a single CD) includes seven of the best tracks from these concerts. Later on, more music from the Fillmore concerts showed up on subsequent albums and compilations - notably 1972's "Eat A Peach". Now, with the release of the two-disc "Deluxe Edition", all of the music released from these historic performances are together in one place. While this shouldn't be taken as a complete concert (which by the way is not), it's truly the music that matters.
The Allmans' blues chops are in full force here as represented by the opening five tracks - among them being "Statesboro Blues", "Trouble No More" and "Stormy Monday". Duanne Allman's slide guitar work is at its best here and brother Gregg's soulful vocals never falter.
As the music progresses, so does the flawless musicianship within the band. The 13-minute "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" and the 19-minute jams of "You Don't Love Me" offer a glimpse of what's to come in the second half of the collection. By the time we get to disc two, the band is smokin' with the instrumental tour-de-force "Hot'lanta" and the relentless 23-minute concert staple "Whipping Post" which leads directly into the monumental 33-minute "Mountain Jam". As mentioned above, the Deluxe Edition does not present a complete concert but the way it's sequenced creates the illusion that the band were warming up at the beginning just to pull out all the stops at the end. Honestly, by the end of this edition, they certainly do.
The sound quality of the Deluxe Edition is amazing with an extra added crack to the drums and bite to the guitars. The packaging is pretty impressive as well with several great photos of the band onstage and some brief but insightful liner notes from music critic Dave Thompson.
Whether or not the Deluxe Edition of The Allman Brothers at the Fillmore East is definitive over the original album is a matter of opinion and preference. However, one cannot deny that regardless of which edition you buy, there is some flawless and amazing music here no matter what.

5 out of 5 stars Should be more than 5 stars- greatest live album of all time.......2006-12-10

First off, I'm not a kid, I just don't want to get an account
And second, this is a great album, one of the greatest live albums of all time.
The album alternates between long jams (Whipping Post, Mountain Jam, You Don't Love Me, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed) and shorter intense songs (Statesboro Blues, Trouble No More, Hot 'lanta, Done Somebody Wrong, One Way Out)
The original Fillmore Album had just seven songs, Statesboro Blues, Done Somebody Wrong, Stormy Monday, Elizabeth Reed, You Don't Love Me, Hot 'lanta, and Whipping Post. All of them showcase the amazing guitar abilities of both Duane Allman and Dickey Betts. On "Whipping Post" each of them take a long solo that slowly builds to a furious crescendo, with Duane especially seeming to pull freakish notes out of nowhere. One of the few songs that he actually plays with straight guitar, rather than his normal slide guitar.
"Statesboro Blues" is one of the best examples why he was a great slide guitarist. It opens this album and the original. Not a studio song on any album, it was nonetheless a concert favorite. Rolling Stone magazine called it Duane's signature song on guitar in their 100 Greatest Guitarists magazine (they ranked him #2) If you're not really sure what the slide guitar should sound like, listen to this beatiful, fiery rendition.
"Stormy Monday" is a slow blues that showcases not only the dual guitarists' superpowers, but Greg Allman's blues sensibilities. He sings this blues classic with conviction, and this song has one of Dickey Betts' best guitar solos.
"Hot 'lanta" is a great instrumental with great instrumental work from everyone in the band, including the two drummers, Jaimoe and Butch Trucks.
"Done Somebody Wrong" is solid as well, a song that really characterizes what the Allman Brothers were all about.
"In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" is a 13 minute instrumental written by Dickey Betts. The opening lines of the song are especially mesmerizing, with Duane and Dickey each turning in mindblowing guitar solos, with Duane especially ripping off notes like they were the last notes he would ever play.
"You Don't Love Me" is a long 19 minute boogie jam. Out of all the longer jams, this is my least favorite, but it is still quite excellent. I do think however it should have stopped about 7-8 minutes in. But it still very good, just not the best on the album.
The Deluxe edition of Fillmore East tacks on extra tracks from the concerts that originally appeared on Eat a Peach, Dreams, and Anthology. The notable addition is the 33 minute "Mountain Jam." Some people might dismiss it as way too long, and I do admit you really have to be in the mood to listen to this song. But it is still a classic example of how the Allman Brothers could sustain a song for a really long time. This song was so long it took up 2 record sides on "Eat a Peach." It contains a really cool double drum solo, an earthquake like bass solo, and really cool guitar solos. One of Duane's trademarks was making his guitar sound like a crying bird, and he does this quite nicely on this track.
"Trouble No More" and "One Way Out" also came from "Eat a Peach" Like "Done Somebody Wrong" I think "Trouble No More" really epitomizes the Southern rock sound of the Allman Brothers Band. "One Way Out" has a nice funky little riff.
"Midnight Rider" is a solid version of one of Greg Allman's most famous songs. "Don't Keep Me Wonderin'" is rockin, and one of the encores, "Drunken Hearted Boy," is haunting, eerie, and awesome.
All in all, get the Deluxe Edition of the Allman Brothers At Fillmore East. YOu won't be sorry. Duane Allman was truly one of the greatest, underrated guitarists of all time. All 6 of them were great. Berry Oakley-Bass guitar, Jaimoe and Butch Trucks- Drums and Percussion, Duane Allman- Lead and Slide Guitars, Dickey Betts-Lead Guitar, Greg Allman- Vocals and Keyboards

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff from the Allmans.......2006-07-31

For those who may have purchased this music when it was first released as an LP or cassette, you'll want this CD with much crisper detail in the delivery. The Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore is a classic. Any collector will have a CD version of Sgt. Pepper, the Best of the Dave Clark 5, and others but lovers of southern rock put this at top of the list, you'll need to have this live collection from the Allmans. Anyone who saw them in concert, when all the original members were alive, know that 'impromptu" changes in the songs were a trademark of their concerts. Even the longer version songs are a treat to listen to and remain fresh without boredom. This is definitely the best.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest..........2005-11-14

Robert Johnson would have been proud... if not a little shocked at how far real southern rock has come since his time.

While there might not be anything new as far as content goes, this CD is the best compilation of all those songs you know and love from The Allman brothers. If you are either new to the Allman Brothers or do not own the other Fillmore releases, this CD is a must buy. Despite some negative reviews regarding the deluxe edition, it sure does have some enhanced sound so this is the CD to buy if you don't own the songs already somehow.

Key songs on the CD include Stormy Monday, Statesboro Blues, In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed (which sounds ten times better than any other release I've heard of it for some reason), and Midnight Rider. Great songs for a great compilation... a bit pricy, I know, but well worth it I assure you!!!

Probably one of the greatest music compilations ever... certainly the best as far as southern rock goes. The second CD is much shorter than the first but includes some extended songs - for example the well-known extended live version of Whipping Post (a song which is downright amazing).

Amazing stuff, much better reviews can be found on the site from music enthusiasts with much more experience in southern rock than I have but all and all this CD was well worth giving my 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Dos ritmos, una música.......2006-10-06

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic collection.......2006-08-24

Like others, I was skeptical when I heard about the idea, but this collection easily won me over. What I find so interesting is that the arrangements are so good, so creative, it's as though these well-known classical pieces were *written* as Cuban music. You find yourself completely accepting this genre-bending experiment.

Extremely enjoyable -- as is their companion album, "Jazz Meets Cuba".

4 out of 5 stars Unlikely Crossover of Cuban Beats with Familiar Classics Yields Mostly Zingy Confection.......2005-12-28

Crossover efforts are always risky ventures that dance precariously between creative and contrived. There is definitely some of the latter on this 2002 recording, but surprisingly, far more of the former as the fruitful teaming of three German classical-jazz musicians and a pair of Cuban percussionist/vocalists puts a hearty Latin-flavored spin on some very familiar classics. Two of the Klazz Brothers, pianist Tobias Forster and bassist Killian Forster, took a fortuitous trip to Cuba and concluded the popular classical pieces they usually played could easily be adapted to the Cuban- and Afro-Cuban Jazz styles.

The beat-heavy results bear them out, as they developed fresh, energetic and lyrical arrangements of standard works by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Chopin, Schubert and others, that still respect the original compositions. The jazzed-up titles aptly (if a bit too preciously) reflect the changes - Mozart's Symphony No. 40 transforms into "Mambozart", Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 becomes "Salsa No. V", and Bizet's Carmen Suite turns into "Carmen Cubana". With titles like those, some of the pieces, perhaps because of their familiarity, come across as a bit too trite, for example, "Afrolise", which sounds bit too cocktail loungey to be too revitalizing a take on Beethoven's "Für Elise", and "Guten Abend", which sounds a bit like a somnambulant Vince Guaraldi take on Brahms's original lullaby.

However, the high points are abundant, starting with the three movements of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 "Pathétique," exciting pieces that feel culturally transformed by the sultry romanticism of the Cuban beats crowned by Tobias Forster's virtuoso playing. Also wonderful are the mournful "Czardas" and the conga-accentuated "Flight of the Bumblebee", both dominated by brother Killian's dexterous bass playing. The three others in the quintet are all equally superb musicians - Tim Hahn, the third Klazz Bother on drums, and Alexis Herrera Estevez (timbales) and Elio Rodriguez (congas), both of Cuba Percussion. The vital mix of sounds in what could have been a hopeless misfire makes for a genuinely exhilarating listening experience.

4 out of 5 stars A unique piece of mixed classic/jazzy/south-american music .......2005-07-28

A unique piece of mixed classic/jazzy music which matches wonderfully in my collection. It is trully remarkable to discover the full classical music-education of these performers, which brings them to make this wonderful CD of high-standard music.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, but need to try harder..........2005-03-27

I found this CD after watching "Collateral". The music sounds very interesting when classic melodies blended with swing and jazz. But they sticked to the originial notes too much. I wish they could have created more variations and improvisation. Also, in this "Classic Meets Cuba" CD, the Cuba part needs to be emphasized more (putting them into a central stage in some tracks; the solo in the Fur Elise track is a good example) rather than treating the percussion beats as peripheral background. Taking the advantage of these vivid beats could further set the musicians free from the original notes. Overall, this is a good CD and is perfect for smooth jazz lover. Hope they can try harder and do more in their up-coming new release-Jazz Meets Cuba.

4 out of 5 stars A Customer Has the Right to be Picky.......2005-02-22

I'm with the reviewer who doubts the originality of (at least some of) these recordings. The Mills Brothers had a high quality of harmony about them so it's still an okay package. But I am here to tell you, I have a cassette of many of the originals. For sure, this is NOT the original "Cab Driver". If you're willing to settle in order to own some legendary music, then go for it. Even watered-down Mills Brothers music is pretty good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars My very favorite recording act of the 20th century!!!!.......2004-05-03

That's right. If I were stranded on an island and had the choice of listening to the recordings of any one artist I would choose the Mills Brothers. According to Jay Warners "Billboard Book of American Singing Groups", the Mills Brothers were the most successful American male group of all time with 71 chart singles spanning four decades. Hailing from Piqua, Ohio, the Mills Brothers started performing way back in 1922. The group consisted of four brothers, Donald, Harry Herbert and John Jr. They signed their first recording contract with Brunswick records in 1931 and were an immediate sensation. Aside from remarkable harmony, the group also simulated instruments!!! In fact, the labels on many of their records had a notice that no musical instruments were included on the recordings. To sample the original recordings of the early Mills Brothers, pick up "Four Boys and A Guitar: The Essential Mills Brothers" on the Sony Legacy label.
In 1934 the group signed with Decca records. They would remain with the label for over a quarter century. During this period, they were one of the most prolific artists around recording literally hundreds of singles. Tragically, one of the brothers, John Jr. passed away in 1936 to replaced by his father who performed with the group until the mid 1950's.
As another reviewer has pointed out, the early Mills Brothers songs on this CD that originally appeared on Brunswick are re-recordings. But as far as I can tell, all of the Decca sides are the original recordings. Listen to them again for the first time and rediscover why this group was so beloved for so many years. They just don't make 'em like this anymore. In my opinion, "Paper Doll" was one of the great songs of the century. You'll also enjoys such all-time favorites as "Glow Worm", "Till Then" and "Opus One". And check out one of their later hits, 1957's "Queen of the Senior Prom". Group harmony just does not get any better then this folks. The three remaining Mills Brothers continued to perform into the 1980's. My wife was fortunate enough to catch one of their final performances. Their music is timeless. You'll love this anthology.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection.......2003-03-28

I think R. M. Glenn must have confused this collection with another one when he wrote his review. I just got through listening to both disks, all the way through, and every song here is the original recording. Rather than being "mostly remakes with big band backing," well over half the tracks contain only guitar accompaniment. This is an excellent collection that can't be recommended too highly.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-12-17

This is the only Mills Brothers CD I own, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I love it. It's a very nice buffet of their greatest hits. Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2001-01-31

I've been a Mills Bros. fan all my life, and I use to have an excellent anthology of them, which unfortunately was ruined some years ago,So thinking I could try to replace it,I ordered this one(after much research to make sure ALL the right songs were included)Imagine my dissapointment when while listening I immediately noticed that NONE of the tunes I most wanted to hear were the original versions, mostly remakes with big band backing,I played ALL of my old favorites, not a single original in the bunch,I almost cried & I couldn't listen any more.So my search for the difinitive Mills brothers' cd continues...

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

With the advent of Instant Live, the Allman Brothers made most shows available in pristine soundboard quality to listeners. This show from the 2003 tour was one of the best shows of a remarkable tour. The band was touring the new Hittin' The Note record, and much of the tour was played with Karl Denson as opening act, reflecting (I think) some of Derek Trucks musical sensibilities. In addition Warren Haynes is pushing the band to add more cover tunes.

As a result we get wonderful tracs like Who's Been Talking, Into the Mystic and a fantastic version of Don't Think Twice featuring Susan Tedeschi. The aforementioned Mr. Denson takes a star turn on Instrumental Illness and Branford Marsalis joins the bad for Dreams and Whipping Post. Mixed in with new tracks from Hittin' The Note the band brings back Done Somebody Wrong, Come and Go Blues and a wickedly funky version of Wasted Words.

5 out of 5 stars Hopefully, the road will go on forever!.......2006-04-22

Another awesome IL recording from ABB's 2003 tour, and this one is a keeper. A nice rendition of "Come and Go Blues", a rare appearance of "Gambler's Roll" a emotional version(as usual) of "Soulshine" make this one a winner. "Don't Think Twice" with vocals by Susan Tedeschi is downright chillin', not to forget a beautiful outing of "Into The Mystic" sung by Mr.Haynes. Just wish other bands would follow ABB and release their live shows. Then again, few bands can match their quality live.

5 out of 5 stars Special guest stars make this an added plus.......2006-02-15

This is one of many "instant Live" CDs that the Allmans do annually now. They are in top form with many strong song selctions and with Gregg in fine voice. An added bonus is Mrs. Derek Trucks (Susan Tedeschi) joining the band for her rendition of Dylan's "Don't think twice. it's allright". Barnford Marsalis joins the Allmans for 2 cuts at end of the night and he is great saxophonist and it's great to hear classic like Dreams and Whipping Post with a world class saxophonist behind them. Wasted Words and "old before my time" are 2 songs you will not easily find on Allamn Brothers live Cds also. They issued many Instant Lives from 2003 so pick one that's special like this one.

4 out of 5 stars Low price makes up for the faults.......2005-01-23

There is a very bad trend in music of releasing CD sets of complete concerts. Every jam band is doing it. The Allman Brothers were one of the last hold outs.

All the truly great live albums, like Allman Brothers, Live at the Filmore East, or the early Graterful Dead albums, or Derek and the Dominoes Live, were taken from several shows. That way, you end up with truly great performances of every song.

When you have a complete concert, there are some songs you don't really need to hear again. This CD set has yet another version of Soulshine, which on every single live album that Warren Haynes has played on. It was a good song the first 20 times I heard it, but now I am sick of it.

The other problem, is the WHOLE concert is included, including all the cheering and talking in between tracks. I really don't want to hear a bunch of stoned idiots whistling and screaming for several minutes. All the truly great live albums have most of the audience noise edited out.

Not only is most of the audience noise included, it is actually cranked up. So you end up hearing whistling and screaming in the middle of some wonderful jamming. There is no reason for this. To get audience noise like this, the group actually has to have audience microphones.

What makes this CD set so good it is that it is so cheap. (Well, it was cheap when it was first issued. It looks like the price may have gone up more than a couple of bucks). With a CD burner, you can edit this down to a single CD of extremely great music, and it only cost the price of a single CD. With groups like Phish, their complete concerts are fairly expensive, so you end up paying a lot for what amounts to only a CD's worth of good material.

There is some fantastic music on the this CD. I hated to see Dickey Betts kicked out of the band, but adding Derek Trucks has really added new life to the band, just as when Warren Haynes came in 15 years ago. Even the classic Allman Brothers songs sound new and exciting. Trucks adds a new jazz orientation to the band. I really enjoy this new version of Wasted Words.

What makes this CD special is the guest appearances on four of the tracks. There is a saxophonist on Instrumental Illness and this turns into a really jazzy number. It is stretched out to 39 minutes, but 15 minutes of that is drum solos. I am not a big fan a drum solos, but the Allman Brothers, along with the Grateful Dead, were always the best at it. This one includes one of Butch Truck's tympanny solos (I have been looking for one of those since the first time I saw him do that in the mid seventies).

Dreams and Whipping Post feature a guest appearance by Brandford Marsailles. This is actually turning into somewhat of a cliche, since he has guested on a number of jam band alive albums, including the Grateful Dead and Widespread Panic. This version of Dreams is great. I would put it up there with the one on the Greg Allman Tour album.

My only other quibble with this CD is Warren Haynes introduction of the guest musicians, "please welcome to the stage....". It is exactly the same as on his Gov't Mule CD's.

As a follow up to their accomplished fusion effort last year, "Classic Meets Cuba", the Klazz Brothers and Cuba Percussion have collaborated again for much of the same, only this time focusing specifically on the works of Mozart. If the results are not quite as exhilarating as the first effort, it may be that the novelty feels somewhat worn this time despite the often virtuoso playing displayed here. Recalling some of Vince Guaraldi's work in the 1960's, the jazzy arrangements are once again supplemented with the beat-heavy Cuban rhythms churned out by Alexis Herrera Estevez on timbales and Elio Rodriguez Luis on congas. What continues to impress on this recording is how well the two sides of the ensemble - Estevez and Rodriguez on one and on the other, pianist Tobias Forster, bassist Killian Forster and drummer Tim Hahn - mesh so well in making all the disparate musical elements balance without contrivance.

Many of Mozart's most renowned pieces are here in reconfigured form. The warhorse Piano Sonata K. 545 ("Sonata Facile") turns into a sunny Caribbean number, "Calypso Facile", while the staccato-tempo Turkish March evolves into the propulsive "Cuban March". More creatively, the familiar Piano Concerto No. 21, K. 467 turns into an African-accented bolero named appropriately "Afrolero" complete with a faraway-sounding whistle, while Eine Kleine Nachtmusik K. 525 becomes a percolating dance number, "Bomba de la Noche". Even more audaciously, they turn the overture to "Don Giovanni" into a slow, evocative bolero number, "Don Muerte", and the familiar aria, "La Ci Darem La Mano" into a lovely piano-dominated ballad, "Reich Mir Die Hand (Your Hand in Mine)". Somewhat less successful are the two selections derived from "The Magic Flute" - "Yo Siento Mucho", a cha-cha version of "Ach, Ich Fuhl's" and Forster's extended piano riffs based on the potpourri passage, "Salzburger Schafferl". Latin pop artist Lou Bega lends his saucy vocals to "Son de Mozart", a clubby reinvention of Fantasia in C Minor, K. 475. This is fun listening for fans of Latin-classical fusion.

I've listened to my share of tropical-flavored classical music. In most of them, the latin rhythm and the percussion just overwhelm the main melody. Not here; it sounds more like Jazz-improvised variations on a theme. I particularly liked the Rondo alla Turca (#5) and Elvira Madigan (#6).

Others may consider this album sacrilegious.
