Sunday NY Times, Good Cup of Coffee and Bird Ahhh........2006-05-07

Whenever I talk to people who I know love music but haven't listened to any jazz yet, this is the album I recommened to them. It was my second jazz album I bought (Kind of Blue 1st) after watching Ken Burns's documentary about 5 years ago. An earlier reviewer said he was disappointed in the live cuts but I couldn't disagree more. Those might be my favorites on the disks. If you listen carefully it really sounds like Dizzy, Bird and Bud Powell are all trying to outdo each other. Dizzy's opening solo on Blue n' Boogie will make your head spin around and this version of Round Midnight with Bud on piano is my all-time favorite. This is my very first review and I'm glad it's for something that has brought so much joy to my life. Enjoy! Oh yea, Bird Lives!!

Very nice Bird compilation.......2005-06-09

Whatever Bird I have heard so far, this one seemed to me the most comprehensively good. I continue to feel amazed by the genious of this man who visited earth for just 35 years.
Listen to his rendition of Confirmation, Just friends. If you happen to see the Ken Burns documentary(I think anyone interested in jazz will), Wynton and Branson Marsalis explain with demonstration how Bird played these two Jazz standards in his own way which was startlingly different from how previous musicians played those.
There are so many nice ones by him, no point naming on. Just to mention one, I play the cheerful 'My little suede shoes' when I want to feel simply happy.

Ok..I bought this compilation because it had all of the bird & diz tracks that I liked and needed. Has most of his good stuff on verve as well. My MAIN reason for picking this one up, was for 'A night in tunisia' and some of the other Dial tracks, only to find out that the licensing for the Dial recordings were unavailable at the time they made this compilation, so they were replaced with bootleg "live" poor quality versions of these tracks.

To be fair, This would make a good gift for someone who just wants a taste.

Excellent.......2004-11-24

Bird was a true prodigy, as were many of his bandmates. This album is a very good cross section of some of his best tunes. The Gillespie tune "Groovin' High" is always a good pick-me-up. Even the sadder sounding songs are delightful in their own way. It is hard to stay in a bad mood when these tunes are playing. The sheer skill of these musicians is truly remarkable.

Good, But not Great.......2003-12-01

If you don't have alot of cash to spend, this album shows alot of Bird's best tunes from Savoy and Dial. If you've got like $30 to spend, or you don't have any parker and you want to try him hou, then get this and bird's best bop on vereve for most of his best work. (Although I cringe when I hear bird with strings) However, if you have more cash to spend, Get the complete Savoy and Dial master takes (It's like $40) and the complete verve master takes (another $40) With these, you'll have all the best bird, and also all the songs on the famed Omnibook. (Except that dang anthropolgy, anyone know where to get that one?) If you need to just get one, get the Savoy. I, like alot of other people I know, like his dial and savoy output much better.

This isn't the one........2002-09-10

Chances are that like the previous reviewer you're looking for the highly-regarded 2-CD set on Rhino, "Yardbird Suite: The Ultimate Charlie Parker." I hope you look more carefully than the other reviewer. This single-disc album isn't that collection but the product of an opportunistic British manufacturer no doubt hoping to benefit from the potential for confusion. If you purchased this CD at the right price (my situation), you may take some consolation: the mastering appears to be from the best available tapes, and the balance, while highly uneven, favors Parker's horn in flattering frequencies. The liner notes appear to be sincere, though they're far from definitive or authoritative. Dates and personnel are provided for each of the cuts but not the circumstances of recording or the original labels. The unusual cover photograph depicts Bird talking to Johnny Hodges (or a look-alike) and 2 other saxophonists--but of course none of the music on the album bears any resemblance to the circumstances of the photograph.

The most prized CD in my collection, Yardbird Suite is an amazing two cd collection featuring many of the most remembered Parker Tunes including Billie's bounce, Donna Lee, Dewey Square and Orninthology. This collection also has many famous performances of Byrd playing with some of the biggest names in jazz such as Diz, Miles Davis, Paul Chambers, and Max Roach.

One of Morgan's best.......2005-09-29

Frank Morgan returns to his roots, and this album ends up being the best of his CDs since his return to the scene in 1985. Charlie Parker was always the major influence on Morgan's playing, and here he pays tribute to his main man. STAR EYES was one of Bird's great interpretations of a popular song, and Morgan gives it a terrific treatment, too. SCRAPPLE FROM THE APPLE, BILLIE'S BOUNCE, and the title track were all bebop standards, and Morgan delivers them flawlessly and with great elan. Mulgrew Miller (p), Ron Carter (b) and Al Foster (d) round out the personnel. If bop's your thing this is one of the best bebop dates of the last few decades. Grab it!
