Customer Reviews:
Papa Mali is still great, but misses the Instagators.......2007-07-19
Papa Mali and The Instagators last album, Thunder Chicken, is one of the funkiest in recent memory, blending hard grooving N'Awlins funk with nasty delta blues and soulful southern rock. While Papa Mali himself is brilliant - as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist - the album is clearly a band effort, with each member adding a peace to the intoxicating brew. What surprised me about Do Your Thing is that the Instagators are gone, leaving instead an album that, despite a few collaborations, is most definitely a solo project for Papa Mali.
Drummer Frosty Smith, who added his lose, effortlessly funky second-line style drumming to Thunder Chicken has been replaced by Rob Kidd. Kidd's drumming is oftten distractingly heavy handed, and his rock oriented "caveman" beats rob the album almost entirely of its funk. With the exception of Henry Butler's brilliant piano on "Honeybee," possibly the album's best track, keyboards have been removed from the mix. Its a major loss since the howling Fender Rhodes and sweet organ were so much a part of what made Thunder Chicken great. Lastly, the thumping bass guitar from the last album has largely been replaced by the sousaphone work of ledgendary Dirty Dozen founder, Kirk Joseph. Joseph's playing is brilliant as always, so this is not necessarily a criticism, but the change is dramatic.
Despite these changes, Do Your Thing is not a bad album, and its biggest redeeming feature is most definitely Papa Mali's songwriting, which has grown more singularly distinctive in the years since Thunder Chicken. "Honeybee" sounds as if it could be a New Orleans standard, full of the same timeless grace as many of the city's ancient tunes. "Little Moses" lopes along with surreal, biting imagery. The albums final four songs are all excellent, amply making up for clunkers like "I Had The Dream." From "Girls in Bossier City," a dark hallucinatory meditation that burns with energy throughout, to "Hallelujah, I'm a Dreamer," the albums touching folky closer, the mood and vibe of the album are enough to lull anyone into a trance.
Those looking for a funky, dancable swamp funk album should look elsewhere. But for anyone who loves Papa Mali's simple, but evocative lyricism and haunting spirituality, Do Your Thing is fascinating.
Freaking killer!.......2007-07-12
This is a stone cold sure shot! I'm new to Papa Mali but this is a GREAT record that's not afraid to fly its freak flag. Dark, mysterious, some great songs, and (as anyone who knows what's up in New Orleans can tell you) an amazing roster of musicians... what's not to love?
Fell short, doesn't develop.......2007-03-30
I agree the flavor is there. I agree the cast brought together on this effort are genu-wine! However, each song seems to be burdened by a redundancy and menotony that disappoints. Admittedly, after "Thunder Chicken," which I enjoy greatly, my expectations were perhaps too high. "Do Your Thing" does not get there for me, nor for my crew. Will continue to listen and hopefully that which has taken purchase with others will also be drawn upon me and mine. Keep trying, Papa Mail. Dig your style and art, but this offering has yet to compel.
Swamp-funk at it's finest.......2007-02-06
Papa Mali and crew return from the bayou like a big sweaty "swamp-thing" to instagate a riot for your senses. Oh not just your ears, but your nose will smell the gumbo, barbecued chicken and cornbread. Your eyes will see new, wonderful colors as the big Papa's stoned-soul mardi-gras comes marchin' through your stereo with Isaac Hayes out front as the Grand Marshall, then Henry Butler and his grand piano will come floatin' in to tickle your fancy, and ya' betta get up offa ya' feet as Robb Kidd gets the party rockin' like a one man drum section, opening it all up for the heavies in the middle of the parade; you'll see Wild Magnolia Indians, Dozens of Dirty sousaphone players, you'll see a Prophet claiming he knows the true religion, you might even see a Mofro they call JJ Grey in there grinnin' from ear to ear, and you will be too as your senses take it all in. And just like the Mardi-Gras, I wish this trip didn't have to end, but I think I see New Orleans' finest comin' down the line.....oh.....wait....it's on repeat, aaaahhhh the party never ends.

The greatest most unheralded album of all time.......2005-09-24
I can't say enough good things about this record, it really is the greatest most unheralded debut record of all time. Why the Canadian music buying public didn't pick up on this gem will truly confound me to this day. The Blue Sickness and All Children Believe In Heaven are worthy follow-ups, but this is still my favourite BK album. In fact, I liked this record so much, I gave it to Elvis Costello in the hopes that he would be able to generate some buzz around it (a la Sexsmith). Anyway, buy it, you won't regret it.
Beautiful Bocephus King.......2005-06-17
Bocephus King is the most underated artist of this time. Between the amazing production and creativity it is easy to get yourself lost in any BK album. The one after this Blues Sickness and the newest All Children Believe In Heaven are amazing albums as well. Check them out.
A great debut CD.......1999-07-20
Yes, that's really an interesting debut CD. Great voice (sometimes remembering Tom Waits), great music (rock and slow songs). I think that this CD is quite a must for people who likes good music.

This disc offers 56 pieces from 17th-century compilations, probably best described as early equivalents of the fake books that popular musicians use today. These dance tunes and songs were the pop music of their time, now turned into "classical music" entirely by the aging process. McFarlane bounces through these catchy tunes with great verve; he's obviously having a good time with the music. The mandora is a small member of the lute family, pitched an octave higher than the two other early lutes McFarlane plays. It sounds rather like a ukulele. There is no profundity to be heard on this disc, but it's highly entertaining. As usual with Dorian, the sound quality is superb. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
I love this CD.......2007-06-12
I'm a Baroque musician and also a massage therapist. This is one of the CD's I use when I do massage; I've heard it now hundreds of times, and it still delights. Some very haunting, beautiful passages and excellent throughout. I agree with the other reviewer's assessment that I've never heard a bad performance on a Dorian recording.
Liltin' lute.......2000-05-19
Ronn McFarlane is the perfect man for the job. These pieces for the lute and mandora are what you'd expect from the time and place they were written. Surprising how many of the tunes sound like they were written yesterday. On some you may want to kick up yer heels a wee bit. Sonically, this CD is a gem; crystal clear sound. I've lent this to several persons and so far I've heard no complaints. McFarlane's Dowland CD is highly recommended also.
Some rare offerings here.......1999-09-26
As I keep saying, I have never heard a poor performance on a Dorian label, and their record remains intact with The Scottish Lute (DOR-90129) and Highland King: the Scottish Lute, Vol. II) (DOR-90257). Between the two, lutist Ronn McFarlane give us no less than 100 short excerpts from the different "Lute Books" that were so popular in the 15th to 17th centuries. There are even some examples of music for the mandora, half the size and an octave higher than a lute. This does not demand intense concentration and is excellent ambient music for relaxing or giving parties. I do wish, however, that more comprehensive notes were included and the multilingual text done away with to make room for them. But the playing is masterful and both CDs are highly recommended.

A different direction for Jessica- 4.5.......2005-11-22
Her sound/Her music-In this CD it sounds like Jessica added lower notes to her vocal register but she still has a strong, smooth voice and stays in a range that works. This CD is basically singer-songwriter piano pop with guitar, as Jessica learned how to play the guitar too. Every song sings like a relationship diary; not a bad thing as Jessica makes it work, but there's a lot less variety of subject matter.
Her best songs-
3) Karma in a Gun-This is an interesting song that shows a new side of Jessica. She sings about a boyfriend who's not faithful to her, prompting her to fantasize about revenge. Believe it or not, this song is more perspective than it sounds, and the instrumentation is low but impressive.
4)Drown-Here Jessica is singing about a broken relationship and comparing it to taking a bath. In this case, drown is a metaphor for getting too deeply involved in the relationship. Her vocals are good; she starts by singing low and getting higher and louder as the song progresses. Her piano/guitar background music is upbeat, which makes this "sad" song more upbeat.
8)Princess Bride-This song is still about relationships, but interestingly enough it goes back to the sound of her first CD in instrumentation, lyrics, and vocals. She compares her real-life relationships to relationships in fairy tales and how she wishes hers were better. Her vocals are amazing here; she pushes herself to sing higher notes and she succeeds without sounding fake.
Final Recommendations-This CD is definitely different from Jessica's first CD, so people who really like the subject variety of that one may be disappointed, but I do recommend listening to this CD at least once. It is a change and it may take time to get used to, but in the long term it's worth it.
An excellent follow-up CD.......2003-08-21
I loved this CD. I have been waiting for it to come out since I hear Keys in a minor (under her maiden name Jessica Riddle) and I was not disappointed! My favorite song has to be Can't See and Drown, but all of them are excellent. The piano playing great and this is definelity worth your money!

Customer Reviews:
Frank Brown writes great songs.......2006-12-27
Fans of quality rock/pop will love Buzz Zeemer. I love this album and also the second Buzz Zeemer Lp. Frank Brown writes great songs. And they are played and sung very well. Tommy Conwell does a great job also. One of the best songwriters to ever come out of Philadelphia.
awesome power pop.......2006-01-28

Check out the other Buzz Zeemer album, plus anyting by his former band Flight of Mavis and BUY HIS NEW SOLO ALBUM. Frank Brown - Out of the Blue. I love Buzz Zeemer!.......2004-09-28
Originally I purchased this CD because I love every piece of work that Tommy Conwell touches. He has yet to disappoint me!
Buy this CD and you'll be amazed at the tightness of this band and the lyrics will just melt your heart, especially on "Don't Hang Up".
Although I'd love to hear Tommy sing these songs, I truly love the voice of lead singer Frank Brown.

Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra here offer a veritable tour of the swing era. Kunzel has been conducting the orchestra since its formation in 1977. The set includes many of swing's cornerstone numbers, of course including Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)," which is also celebrated as the source of the genre's name. The music flourished in the '30s and '40s, popularized by composers and bandleaders such as Count Basie, Glenn Miller, and the Dorsey brothers. To help realize this project, a number of vocalists were enlisted, all of whom have current resumes rich with forays into the swing era: the Manhattan Transfer, John Pizzarelli, and Janis Siegel (who's also a member of the aforementioned vocal quartet). From soaring group vocals on such numbers as "Skyliner" to straight-ahead instrumental grooves as on Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton's "Flying Home," this 14-song set celebrates the swing era by making it sound fresh today. --David Greenberger
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing Vocals.......2003-08-21
The orchestral approach to swing used on this recording unfortunately makes this date sound anemic. The swing band sound that is in integral part of this song list is either missing or meagerly represented among the orchestral arrangements and the hollow sounding concert hall acoustics. Worst of all, the Manhattan Transfer are mixed down so far that they almost sound like they don't get their own mikes. For anyone who loves MT as much as I do, this recording is a sadly wasted opportunity. Very disappointing. They deserve so much better.
