Alto Madness is a classic.......2001-01-13
Richie Cole's crisp, clean sound will knock you back from the opening riffs of "Cole's Nocturne" all the way through to "Moody's Mood". I have owned this record since it was first released in 1977 and I still think it sounds as fresh as the first time I played it. This was also one of vocalist Eddie Jefferson's last recording appearances prior to his untimely death. Cole and Jefferson have some great melodic chemistry going as evidenced on "The Common Touch"

Customer Reviews:
I have original Lp's Keeper of the Flame and Alto Madness.......2005-01-01
I found the Richie Cole LP's Keeper of the Flame and Alto Madness. They both have rare Eddie Jefferson tunes. Incredible versions of NY Afternoon and Harold's House of Jazz. On Alto Madness, Hi Fly, Relaxin at Camarillo and Waitin for Waits, with Tom Waits. What can I say, WOW!!! I buned this onto a CD and added the first LP by Howard Tate, Get it While you Can. Anyone who wants a copy, send me an email and we can trade. mwidell@sbcglobal.net
I have Keeper of the Flame (vinyl).......2004-03-08
To the Music Fans from UK, and San Diego: you leave no way for a chap to get in touch with you. I have "Keeper of the Flame" on vinyl, bought it about 1980. Just got it out and was knocked over all anew by Harold and NYA. Marvellous, heart-warming stuff. Shee-gee-gee-gu-GROWW!
All I can offer you is to email me and we'll try and make arrangements for me to send you a little tape?

New York Afternoon.......2003-08-30
Where can I get hold of album "Keeper of the Flame" by Richie Cole, I am after the vocal track New York Afternoon with Eddie Jefferson. Can anybody help.
New York Afternoon vocal.......2003-02-20
Both "New York Afternoon" & "Harold's House of Jazz" appear as vocals by Eddie Jefferson on the Richie Cole "Keeper of the Flame",LP. To my knowledge, it's not available on a CD.
Not what you think.......2002-08-04
I bought this album used, here at Amazon, in order to get a recorded copy of Eddie Jefferson's wonderful version of New York Afternoon. He's not on that track--it's an instrumental. In fact, Eddie's not on most of the record. I love Richie Cole and am still glad to have the cd, but if you're looking for Eddie--he's not here. I'd sure like to find copies of him singing the title song and others like "Harold's House of Jazz", "Benny's From Heaven", "Common Touch". Any help out there?

Customer Reviews:
Very good for everyone, essential if you love McLean.......2004-08-31
Very good session by two great alto sax players Jenkins and McLean. This album is really consistent, very good from the beginning to the end. The tunes are a medium fast blues, an anatoll ("rhythmn" changes) a couple of standards, a medium up tempo (Tramp) and a very well played ballad, "Easy Living" and last an original medium fast bop tune. This album is very famous so I was expecting it to be one of the greatest of the period (1957). I think it's really a great collection of tunes however it's not one of those absolutly essential record (five stars) .. and not one of those that give me the greatest emotions actually. Probably due to the fact that the guys are not my favourite alto players even if I like them very much. Anyway the playing is aggressive, inspired and consistent. A great album, four full stars. If you love McLean's harsh sound and fragmented phrases chances are that you'll absolutly love this album. I prefer "Phil & Quill" for example (another two altos album from the same 1957) because I love Woods much more than McLean (the two leaders of the two records). Woods is a pure parkerian which is my kind of player. McLean is a different less flashy, less technical and more arsh, aggressive. My taste.
