IT'S ABOUT THE BIRDS!!.......2004-07-10

Who'd have thought an entire album dealing with our fine feathered friends could be this excellant? I think Carmen & Sammy Davis outshined the rest of the Decca artists during the 50s. Technically, Carmen's voice was richer during that decade; it was always dramctic throughout her career. Having both characteristics in full force, Mcrae was able to interpret evergreens as A NIGTINGALE SANG IN BERLKELY SQUARE with a vigor unmatched by even Mel Torme; only Manhatten Transfer's 4 part harmony could rival her version. All 12 songs are of note & so varied which should have been hard to accomplish considering the album's theme. CHICKEN TODAY & FEATHERS TOMORROW, & MISTER MEADOWLARK are 2 novelty songs that would sound trite & dated by any one else but Carmen. Here the 2 are interesting parables. BALTIMORE ORIOLE is the neccessary blues song, RED RED ROBIN super optimistic, EAGLE & ME extremely philosophical, & HIS EYE IS ON THE SPARROW very faithful. This is a must own with every song belonging on it. Ps. Johhny, America's most beloved lyricist, is represented with SKYLARK, BOB WHITE, & MISTER MEADOWLARK. I like Carmen's version of SKYLARK the best of all I own.

Too many birds.......2004-03-29

This is the first Carmen McRae CD that I have bought. Initially, I liked the idea of a theme CD where all the songs are about something. However, after listening to it, I find that there is a real "so what" quality about it. So they're birds. Big deal. There's nothing here that really stirs the emotions. And Carmen's voice lacks depth, although she has a good range.

As someone who has been collecting Carmen McRae albums for thirty years, I find this production a welcome addition to my shelves. I have to say the first impression that hit me was the stunning sound. "Clear as a bell" and "sharp as a tack" are two hackneyed phrases that are fairly accurate in this case. It's hard to believe this album was recorded back in the late 1950's. Whoever did the digital remastering of the material certainly knew their business.

With these songs you get a Carmen McCrae who is very much in her prime and absolutely in control of her voice. Both her singing and her backup instrumentals are right on target. The songs are "musical" in every sense of the word.

I share these thoughts with you as someone who has admired Miss McRae's work for several decades. In all honesty, for those who are just becoming acquainted with her, there may be other albums to try first.

COME FLY WITH CARMEN!.......2002-06-18

and the rest of the swingin' birds in this collection that could have been called "All The Best In One Crazy Nest" or "The Tweet-est Sounds You'll Ever Hear". Oh yes, this was one concept album that one would have thought couldn't fly, but enough of the topical remarks, as you can see I'm a music lover, not a comedian. Often overlooked, this is another one of those Carmen Mcrae gems that finally gets its initial CD release via the new LP style packaging from Universal/Verve. Carmen's Decca years
were something of a success, but she was often tied down with material that did not do her justice. She still made it work.
Here is such an example; a spirited but somewhat unusual concept, and 12 tracks of pure Carmen magic. Special mention and hats off to the elite in the orchestra, impeccably arranged and conducted by the great Ralph Burns, among them the immortal Ben Webster on sax. The plaintive prose in Johnny Mercer's SKYLARK has been sung by everyone, but never as sweetly as Carmen here. The swingin' BOB WHITE is also a winner, showing Carmen's fondness to jump around and even a clever tag on the ending which might remind one of the famous big band outros (particularly "In The Mood") The lovely NIGHTINGALE SANG IN BERKELEY SQUARE is taken a shade slower than usual here, but Carmen's vocals still glow over sparse backings. The sultry FLAMINGO, scarcely released before, is a warm and heartfelt outing by Carmen and the band, with Webster's solo taking flight at the break. But perhaps the most telling of all the tracks is Carmen's reading of the good ol' chestnut, WHEN THE RED RED ROBIN COMES BOB BOB BOBBIN' ALONG. Carmen jots and jams her way through this one, showing of some of the skills she'd hone for us to enjoy years later, that somewhat off-key, but yet right on time departure from printed notes only to end up right on target. The album closes with a spiritual, strangely enough, but nonetheless heartfelt and important to the package, HIS EYE IS ON THE SPARROW, complete with chorus. This long forgotten album will be a welcome addition to your collection. Thank you UMV/Verve for this long out of print title on CD!

This is truly a Yardbirds family album. Compiled from the Best of from The Jim McCarty band etc... you will not be disappointed with this release. Good solid down to earth music blues rock a fun sort a album. The really nice thing is that the album was helped put together by fans for fans.

British Blues Rock at its Very Best.......2006-07-29

If you enjoyed Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues, where he gives you a glimpse of British Blues, you will LOVE Mooreland Street Records' Yardbirds Family Tree-Birds of a Feather CD. This compilation captures the true defintion of British Blues by some of the best blues musicians and vocalists on the planet. The quality of music provided on the CD deserves more than a 5 star rating...it's that good!

The really IS a 'best of'.......2006-07-11

Most of the tracks on this album come from three different albums released on the Mooreland St Records label over the past few years. 'Outside Woman Blues' by The Jim McCarty Band, The British Invasion All-Stars (which has been getting some regular airplay on XM Radio) and the tribute album to blues man Sonny Boy Williamson 'Mostly Sonny' by The Ambulators with vocals by former Savoy Brown front man Dave Walker. Two tracks are brand new and feature Pete French (Cactus/Atomic Rooster) doing the vocal honors on 'Wang Dang Doodle' and 'Sitting On Top Of The World' ....there is also a long out of print track by The Yardbirds Experience (with Noel Redding, Jim McCarty, Eddie Phillips etc) that ends the collection nicely.
The cool thing is that there isnt a bad track on the entire disc.

Good CD.......2005-01-27

This a a very jazzy cd.This cd is definetely the BEST of Birds of a Feather.The song "Head To Toe" is a beautifully composed song which is very funky in a way.It is a fast song, very upbeat and happy."View From Here" is a very coooooooolll, slow jazzy song as well and it has some nice piano features and guitar sounds as well.Both these songs have been played on The Weather Channels Local Forecast Segment.

I recommend buying this cd, mainly because this is a good jazz group and it has all their all time best jazz songs ever!!!

A Bird of a Feather.......2004-02-08

The words Caribbean Jazz Project got me to put on the headset at Borders and listen to this the first time. I love this CD. It communicates freedom, precision and passion.

I was instantly immersed in the first cut-I felt like I was flying. When saw that the title of the piece was Birds of a Feather I knew I was one. Their Gathering CD is highly acclaimed though I felt its taste to lean toward New Age Jazz.

But Birds of a Feather is decisively Afro-Cuban and movin'. Rhythms rhyme, their motifs morph, building interest and keeping the pieces fresh as their fires burn. Over the drums tasty bass dances and I perceived an economy of notes that have intellectual appeal as well as eliciting an appreciative acknowledging grunt at certain places.

CJP understands the psychology of the listener demonstrated in their arrangements of rhythms, melodies, the element of surprise yet being predictable, being constantly new and still maintaining continuity. If you don't get a chance to hear this CD before you buy it, just buy it anyway. You are going to love it too.

Don't overlook these guys!.......2003-09-14

Dave Samuels, one of the original founders of The Caribbean Jazz Project (with Andy Narell and Paquito D'Rivera), has emerged as the sole survivor of a band that has always been a brilliant idea but has not always lived up to its conceptual genius: He's the only one pictured on the jewel box insert; he's the producer; half the tunes are his; and his name appears under the band's name on the cover of the jewel box insert.

I thought CJC's last disc, The Gatherting, was something special. This one continues their arc of greatness and even tops it.

I was skeptical about this disc. After all, it is missing most of the players that made the previous CJP discs work: Paquito, Andy, and, more recently, Dave Valentin and Steve Kuhn. Moreover, it contains no woodwinds--nary a flute or sax to be heard. Instead, it is billed as an investigation into the role of the trumpet in Afro-Cuban jazz music. Well, I'm not the world's biggest trumpet fan; I've had my fill of retro-maestros, upper-register pyrotechnic practitioners, and brass bad boys. Plus, my own feeling is that the piercing sonics of the trumpet generally need to be balanced by the earthiness of a sax.

So I came to this disc with a good deal of skepticism. But not to worry. The CJP seems to have come together very nicely, thank you, with the departure of its most heavyweight players. Those remaining--Dario Eskenazi on piano, Rueben Gonzales on e-bass, Dafnis Prieto on drums, and Roberto Quintero on congas and percussion--have gelled very nicely. They work together seemlessly as an ensemble, and each is becoming a very fine soloist. Eskenazi, especially, strikes me as an emerging piano giant in Latin jazz. And Prieto really knows how to make things cook. You know how a good deal of Latin jazz comes across as a lot of fast notes without much soul? Well, these guys can burn when they need to, but they they're also awfully tuned in and conversational.

Also, the inclusion of some very tasty guest appearances by Randy Brecker (trumpet), Romero Lubambo (guitar), Mark Walker (surely one of the very finest Latin drummers on the scene), and Cafe on percussion notch things up to a higher level.

Again, I almost didn't pick this one up, but I'm glad I did. This is a truly hot band, one that just keeps getting better and better.
