Tyzik Very Accomplished Trumpeter-This Is A Gem!.......2005-11-15
I have been on a 'retro' jag musically for some time. Recently, I found an old cassette (yep, a cassette!) to play in my new car that had some obsure tracks form Jeff Tyzik's "Smile" album, which got me all Tyziked over again. So, I found Distant Dreams" and while not as synthesized as "Jammin In Manhattan" or "Smile" I like "Distant Dreams" the best. Jeff has written some very nice arangements here, included a variety of rhythms and moods. He gets great support from his backing musicians, especially on drums & keyboards, which augment but never overpower the leader. There's some nice tasty tenor sax (don't know who), always just behind Tyzik. Jeff's is no Chuck Mangione, he's much more a power player with a hint of Freddie Hubbard when Freddie had his chops. I was impressed with Tyzik's melodic yet strong writing style. All the tracks are very mellow, but I would not categorize this as "vator muzak" by a lon shot. Soe real depth went into the composition and structure of these songs and certsain tracks have beautiful strings mixed in. For me, the standout jam is "Blues From Beyond", a 9 minute Milesish vamp with walking electric bass, Mike Stern/John McLaughlin guitar licks and ambient Chick/Herbie keys in just the right spots. This jam is a strut for the devil and I'd use it in a NY minute to open a contemporary film mystery. It's that slick. Great production, mix is superb, does not sound dated (epecially considering recorded in 1990), this is excellent music that gets better the more you listen. If you like a Trumpeter with verve and total command of his instrument, with a twist of, say Tom Browne, check this CD out, great for a Sunday cruise up the Coast.
Pleasing.......2000-09-24
Jeff Tyzik has a smooth and very pleasing style. I enjoyed the album very much.

While this was released by the same company as Fantasy Dreams (Vol. 1.) this is not performed by the same band/person. While Fantasy Dreams (Vol. 1) included wonderful re-arranged renditions on classic film themes performed by Metasonica, this CD is simply compiled by cheezy synthesized tracks from various budget compilations.

remembering and dreaming.......2004-05-06
Michael Gulezian's unique guitar style, technically dazzling as it may be, is only a part of what makes this CD so memorable; it's his expressiveness that really stands out. The songs are, by turns, exuberant, pensive, haunting, joyful, meditative. I've had this disc for over a decade and the music still feels fresh and new to me. Whenever I'm choosing which CDs to take with me on a trip, this one always seems to end up in the final dozen.
a prescription for sweet dreams.......2004-02-19
I just happened to catch my college radio station playing some tunes off this album and interviewing Michael the afternoon before his concert in the student union back in the mid-90s. One thing that really struck me was when one person called in to say that this music was so beautiful and relaxing that it made them fall asleep. I was thinking the same thing to myself, and Michael said on the air that he considered that comment high praise.
In concert, he's funny, personable, and engaging, though he professes to be very shy. He brings a wonderful multilayered music from one simple guitar, and when it's layered with a few other simple instruments - a chorus without words, a piano, a violin, or a cello, it's magic. This is one of my favorite CDs to fall asleep to, as the music is not only beautiful, but uplifting for the spirits, and can help bring me out of a funk.
It's definitely my favorite of the 3 I have (only missing Language of the Flame). Unspoken Intentions is an early work and it shares some of the same character, though it's not as mature as Distant Memories and Dreams. I like Dare of an Angel least, but I'd need to listen again to articulate why.
Check out his website at timbrelinemusic.com for more information, including tour dates (he often plays small colleges and clubs, especially in the midwest). If you like his music, you might also enjoy the music of Steve Tibbetts and Marc Anderson, two of his compatriot Minneapolis artists.

Steidl, the 21st Century Nostradamus.......2001-09-25
The notes describe the inspiration for "Fire Dreams" as chronicalling his past impressions of "the ever fiery and colorful world of New York City". Clearly, in light of recent events, his words are all too prophetic. Music may heal the recent wounds through ties that bind all humans together. Scott's protean musical forms and rhythms defy toe tapping to the melody, yet entrance the listener through the bright and spirited phrasings.
While these pieces clearly fall into the bailiwick of modern orchestral music, the unconventional rhythms (7/8, 5/8 12/8 meter) remind one of a Dave Brubeck composition. The Basoon, well represented in Distant Thunder, recalls images of the composer as an all State Basoon player who used a contact microphone amplified Bassoon to create a new and novel character for the instrument. Scott's ophthalmologically trained eye creates melodic phrasing admixed with grand and frenzied rhythms. Whether it's tacking a retina or attacking a tocatta, Steidl appears equally nimble in both arenas. Kudos to the composer!
What dreams may come?.......2001-08-28
Fire Dreams is a bravura of fresh sounds that masterfully explores the tonal range and rhythmic repertoire of a fine orchestra, evoking vivid latent images best seen with closed eyes. As the first recorded opus of this composer, it is a brilliant introduction and major contribution to American music. We shouldn't have to go to New ZZZealand to hear it performed! - Paul Axelsen
Wild Ride through New Zealand.......2001-04-07
Scott Steidl's `Fire Dreams' contains some of the most dramatic and aurally vivid contemporary classical music recorded. The works are awash in tempestuous waves of varying time signatures, powerful percussive bursts, and energetic instrumentation. Punctuated throughout are moments where fluidic strings and wind instruments provide a rest to the manic momentum. The tempo and sometimes dissident nature of the harmonies effect the listeners metabolism in an internal, physiological manner. Rarely has the full tonal range of the symphony been expressed so emphatically as in the music on this CD. Each piece deserves several hearings to appreciate the level to which dynamics and intricacy have been applied with great success. Fans of contemporary American classical and motion picture soundtrack music should check out Scott Steidl's `Fire Dreams'.

Simply Beautiful - 5 Stars.......2004-02-10
This is simply one of the most beautifully executed CD's I have ever heard. The music is tastefully and artfully executed. Understated and fabulous. And in the center of it all, the crystalline vocals of Miss Karen Ramirez. This production is amazing in its ethereal beauty. The CD was recorded in 1998 in Italy. Now in 2004, I am wondering....where is Miss Ramirez and company? A follow up to this masterful recording would be such a welcome oasis in todays musical landscape. I am grateful that I have finally discovered this exquisite recording.
Music that melts your ears.......1998-11-17
It's a shame such a masterful album hasen't been edited in the US yet. Karen Ramirez delivers ten songs (and an a remix of her hit single "Looking for Love"), and all of them are outstanding: a mixture of Sade with drum and bass and touches of bossa nova. Each and every track is nearly a gem, starting with the brazilian flavoured "Troubled Girl" and and closing with the romantically trippy "People make the world go round. This promises to be one of the top albums of 98.
Stunning debut - worth the import price.......1998-10-10
I read a review of this CD in Q Magazine - the reviewer gave it 4 stars out of 5 and declared Ramirez a "Sade for the 90's". The album has a cover, "Looking for Love" by Everything But The Girl and shares some of EBTG's recent drums'n'bass type elements in her music. But mostly the CD is comprised of excellent pop-soul without all the horrible oversinging trappings of modern R&B singers.
Ramirez's voice is clear and beautiful - the tracks, recorded in Naples, Italy, are gorgeous and spacious.
What does it sound like? Combine Sade with modern-day Everything but the Girl, throw in some of the more quieter moments of Pet Shop Boys' 1996 album "Bilingual", add some pop-soul leanings, and this is the album. Each track is immediately likable and distinguished from one another.
If I were at a US record label, I would be signing Karen Ramirez in a second and pushing this album hard. Nearly every track could be a major pop-soul hit single. I hope she gets the visibility in the US that this CD deserves. It's already becoming a hit in England and Europe. One listen and you'll know why...
