Album Description

Christopher Parkening, whose remarkable life and career were recently chronicled in his autobiography and companion CD, Grace Like a River, described the young baritone Jubilant Sykes as "phenomenally gifted". Through the years, as Christopher and Jubilant's friendship grew, so did the scope of their individual careers. The two performed together in concert quite frequently so the idea of recording together seemed a natural progression. When Christopher Parkening and Jubilant Sykes walked into Capitol Studios' famous Studio A, where so many legendary artists have recorded, something special was going to happen. This recording, aptly named Jubilation, is a musical journey through Brazil, Spain and the Americas.

Excellent Duo.......2007-04-10

This CD is a collection of music both traditional and modern. Christopher Parkening and Jubilant Sykes are a perfect match for the completion of perfection in this collection of music. Christopher Parkening's performance of solos are brilliant and heart felt. Jubilant Sykes is excellent as well and his deep tones mix so well with the gentle harmony of the classical guitar. This is a must for any music library.

Dynamic Duo .......2007-04-03

Going out on a limb here. This cd may be as good or better than Pleasures of Their Company. There is some real magic going on here. Christopher's sensativity and willingness to let Jubilant take the spot light is really what makes this cd for me. The tunes with the vocalise are particularly satisfying. It's just great to see Christopher continue to put out such quality work so many years into his career. I have seen them play some of these tunes live and hope to again someday in the near future. If you like this cd check them out live... at times I thought Jubilant's voice was going to bring the ceiling down.

Worth the wait!!!.......2007-03-25

After hearing Jubliant and Christopher on a Christmas tour a couple years ago I have been waiting for them to record something since... Finally!!! After listening I am just amazed by Jubliant's virtuoso voice. I think all the Americal Idol hopefuls should really listen to true God given talent versus copying commerical radio stars. Amazingly good voice. Now, I have been playing guitar for 18+ years and am an avid player and fan of classical guitar. Christopher Parkening has always been my inspiration for starting and he shows no signs of letting up on his wonderful styling, phrasing and best of all his sound! This was a match made in Heaven. Literally!

Worth the wait!.......2007-03-16

Finally, these two great musicians who have toured this music for over a year have recorded a delightful collection of songs, spirituals and solo guitar works. Sykes' voice is complimented by Parkening's masterful playing of the classical guitar. I highly recommend this recording. What a treat!

When gospel quartets age--and hey, this is the Dixie Hummingbirds' 75th anniversary here--they're required to make crossover records that match them up with a wide array of pop musicians. Since the Dixie Hummingbirds already did that for their 70th anniversary on Music in the Air, this time they match themselves with a sure-footed backing band of rock and soul all-stars including Dr. John, Larry Campbell, Garth Hudson and Levon Helm. "God's Radar" clues the listener in that something different is going on here: it starts off like a bluegrass tune, then the guitars kick in and they're pure honky-tonk, while the bridge is a Cajun riff. The weirdest thing about the song is how well it works. The same can be said for the entire album, which mixes contemporary songs with traditional classics. "Too Many Troubles" matches swampy blues-rock to a mournful song written by Buddy and Julie Miller, with a nice, golden-age-style lead vocal by William Bright. The sole survivor of the original group is lead baritone Ira Tucker, who joined the `Birds in 1938 at the age of 13, and he still delivers rich bursts of inspired shout-singing that's absolutely goose bump-inducing. Gospel is more than the root of soul music, it's a vital, wholly American and very alive music; this expertly-produced and laidback album presents sweet proof. --Mike McGonigal

If the voice of Ira Tucker doesn't give you chills on "Too Many Troubles" and "When I Go Away", you may beyond hope. The whole album exudes warmth, and truth, and sincerity. Hats off to Larry Campbell's production, which surrounds the Hummingbirds with some top shelf talent. Here you have Campbell (guitarist with Bob Dylan), and the rest of the core of Dylan's mighty touring band, plus Garth Hudson, Levon Helm, and Dr. John. I particularly liked the Delta blues flavor of "Too Many Troubles" and "Nobody's Fault."

Slip it into the CD player; crank it up; feel better about life. It's that simple.

Occasionally and too-infrequently I stumble across some music so good that it reminds me of why I got into music in the first place, way-back in the fuzzy past. Well this Dixie Hummingbirds record does just that. It's completely alive in spirit and music.

I picked it up sight unseen because I always liked the classic Hummingbirds stuff, and because the CD's backup band is really intriguing. What a pleasant surprise. This record is flat-out exciting and even dance-able. Hats off to Larry Campbell for the production, and hats off too, of course, to Ira Tucker, Sr. and the rest of the Hummingbirds for their incomparable virtuosity, energy, and commitment to excellence.

Song Number 6, "When I Go Away" is my favorite, an example of just how rhythmically inventive and totally exciting classic gospel vocal arrangement can be. Everything's great though. Mr. Tucker, Sr. joined the Hummingbirds so long ago... His rich baritone voice is as strong as ever. This really IS roots music, performed by the actual originators. Don't think twice about this one... it is all meat and no gristle. Well worth the investment.

Great God A'Mighty!.......2003-11-14

This is the first and only album by the Dixie Hummingbirds I've listened to, and all I can say, as someone who's not really very experienced with gospel, is Oh, My, God. This is INCREDIBLE. It works on so many levels that at times you might not even realize you're tapping your foot like mad to a GOSPEL song. If I ever see that this band is scheduled to perform within 500 miles of me, I'm jumping in a car and heading out!

The first time I listened to this I was a little disappointed thinking the production ( older recordings) was sub par. However I came to it a second time with triple the volume & it came to life in a BIG way! Marvelous interplay of voices. Wide variety of stylings. Cool Christian vibes! Very different! Try it out!

If you are like I was: a newcomer to the Gospel scene and considering purchasing this CD, think no further. Do it! This is a perfect introduction to the Golden Age of Gospel. Ms. Jackson's "Move on Up a Little Higher" has everything you want to hear and more. Power, spirit and the love which speaks louder than words even more gracefully than music. The Famous Blue Jay's "Jesus Met the Woman at the Well" is certainly much more than I learned at camp. "Golden Gate Gospel Train" contains lip-curling harmonies and spirit. Even the Hawkins' Singers' "Oh Happy Day" takes on new meaning after listening to the entire, moving collection of some of the best Gospel recorded.

Finest collection available anywhere.......2001-07-23

Of all the collections of classic Black gospel out there, this one (and vol. 2) are easily the best. Some of the music here is just beyond description - the Roberta Martin Singers track is ethereal; Mahalia is at her peak; the Swanee Quintet at their rawest greatness; the list of must-have tracks here is long. And the sequencing of the songs is brilliant for a various artists collection, everything just flows as if these artists worked on this together. Whoever put this CD together clearly loved the music, and no collection of gospel is complete without this disc. Volume 2 gets equally high marks, and Vol. 3 (White Gospel) is sadly out of print.

This Is Music To Feed the Soul.......2001-01-24

This hour-long CD kicks off with the queen of gospel Mahalia Jackson, and over the course of 18 tracks gives you a crash course in black gospel music. Most of these tracks were recorded in the 40s and 50s. The earliest recording is the Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet's acapella "Golden Gate Gospel Train" from 1937. There are two Seventies recordings. Shirley Caesar's 1975 remake of the country hit "No Charge" is a touching song but hardly seems essential to a history of black gospel. Aretha Franklin and James Cleveland's 1972 performance of "Precious Memories," however, is an emotionally charged reading, and clocking in at over seven minutes is by far the longest track on the collection. "Oh Happy Day" by the Edwin Hawkins Singers proved that there was still a place in popular music for gospel even in 1969--it went to No. 4 and sold over a million copies.

But the real gems are the songs by early gospel artists like The Swan Silvertones, the Dixie Hummingbirds and The Pilgrim Travelers. Instrumentation is generally sparse, as it should be, to keep the emphasis on the vocals. Sound quality at times is marginal. "The Old Ship of Zion" and "Sit Down, Servant," for example, sound like they were mastered from scratchy 78's. But this is powerful music. It's difficult to imagine anyone listening to "Jesus Met the Woman at the Well" or "Do Lord Send Me" and not being spiritually moved. Black gospel music has a deep and rich history and this collection is in no way intended to be definitive, but it's a wonderful introduction. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

The Band as it now stands simply cannot carry the weight it once did. Avatar Robbie Robertson has been gone since 1976, meaning he's been an ex-Band member longer than he was in the long-lived outfit. Richard Manual, in his prime the group's most versatile vocalist, died in 1987. Still, bassist-vocalist Rick Danko, drummer-vocalist Levon Helm, and master instrumentalist Garth Hudson--along with a few supplemental players--forge ahead. With Helm, who's been the backbone of the post-Robertson group, ailing, the Band of Jublilation is left largely in the shaky hands and voice of Danko, whose past personal problems are well-documented. (In 1997 he was given a five-year suspended sentence in Japan for heroin possession.) This 11-song collection isn't going to make anyone forget Music from Big Pink. And yet there's a certain kind of nobility to be found in Danko's strained-but-true singing in "Book Faded Brown" and "If I Should Fall" as well as in Helm's more abraded vocals in Allen Toussaint's "A Blind Fool's Love." Eric Clapton and John Hiatt make cameo appearances here, but they don't really elevate the recording. In truth, Jubiliation isn't really an album about getting higher; it's about three musicians sharing a load that's wearing them down bit by bit but hasn't gotten the best of them yet. --Steven Stolder

Great Final Chapter!.......2006-09-06

"Jubilation" from 1998 was the third album released by the band after the re-union. Lead-singer, keyboard-player and occasional drummer Richard Manuel, who died in 1987, had contrubted one track on each of the previous two albums; here only three remaining original members are featured.

Musically the sound is unmistakably the Band as we known them from the late sixties and the seventies. Though the voices of Levon Helm and Rick Danko have lost some of the power of their younger days, Danko's singing in particular, is as moving and honest as ever. Especially his ballads stand out. Opening track "Book Faded Brown" is the Band at their best, and the Danko co-written ballad "If I Should Fail" is just as great. On John Hiatt's "Bound By Love" Danko and Hiatt share the lead vocals, and it's no surprise that this is another highlight.

Helm, who suffered great throat problems at the time of these recordings, gives fine performances on "Don't Wait" and Allan Toussaint's "You See Me".

On the JJ Cale sounding country-blues "High Cotton" it's Danko and Helm sharing vocals.

The strongest rocker "White Cadillac" features new member Randy Ciarlante on lead-vocals.

A short dramatic ( and poetic ) instrumental, "French Girls" concludes the album.

Another great Band album which is, with Danko also gone, is more than likely to be their final.

Last Hurrah.......2006-07-07

The death of Rick Danko the year after this disc was released and the shut-down of Levon Helm's vocal chords from illness make this undoubtedly the last album that will ever come from the much-loved unit known as the Band. The music here gives their fans much to celebrate, although the celebration comes with the poignancy of maturity. This is not the sound of superannuated rockers still trying to act like kids; these are grown-ups who have spent a lifetime making music, sharing their seasoned gifts with us one more time. "High Cotton" and "Don't Wait" are as good as anything the Band ever did. "Book Faded Brown," "If I Should Fail" and "Spirit of the Dance" showcase Danko's deliciously weathered voice. "White Cadillac" and "You See Me" are fun and give some of the junior members of the ensemble a chance to shine, while "French Girls" is a rare Garth Hudson instrumental. This is definitely a fitting capstone to the career of a band whose music was always the soul of integrity.

Magnificent....one of The Band's best albums...........2006-04-23

This is a phenomenal album. I've always enjoyed it. It's The Band's best album without Robertson, and it gives quite a lot of evidence that the other members of The Band had much more input that Robbie Robertson would admit to. As Band fans know, there's always been a point of contention between Levon Helm and Robbie Robertson over credits to the Band's catalog. Robertson has most of the songwriting credits. However, when you listen to this album, and compare it with Robertson's solo work, you realise that all the members of The Band contributed to the albums. This is a Band album through and through, with 4 bonafide classics on it. Book Faded Brown, High Cotton, Bound by Love, and If I Should Fail are all wonderful. There's a real authentic feel to this album, something that you usually don't get with modern records. The guest musicians are used very well, and the album doesn't degenerate into a celebrity record, so to speak. This will probably be the last Band album. The only surviving members of the Band are Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, and Robbie Robertson. Since Helm and Robertson have never made peace (and probably won't), I don't think Helm and Hudson will carry on, especially with no Rick Danko or Richard Manuel. I could be wrong, though. Regardless, this is a great album, and a wonderful addition to The Band's catalogue...

The Band's Honesty, Nobility, and Bravery all Shine.......2005-01-01

The Band, one of the most important musical groups of the late 60s and early to mid 70s began recording again in 1993 without Robbie Robertson (who had presumed the group to be over after 1976's "The Last Waltz") and vocalist Richard Manuel, who committed suicide in 1986 during one of the reunited Band's tours (in which Robertson did not participate). Their first album without Robertson, "Jericho" was one of the best surprises of 1993, and one of their strongest studio efforts, with the additions of new members but longtime cohorts Jim Weider, Richard Bell, and Randy Ciarlante. Along with 1995's "High On the Hog," The Band had produced two fine studio efforts full of rich musical landscapes but, with few exceptions, neither had really expressed the emotions of the group's history together. With 1998's "Jubilation" however, The Band may not have had a choice. Vocalist Levon Helm was ailing with throat cancer and it was now a full 30 years since the group had made their debut with 1968's "Music From Big Pink," a record which took the music world by storm. Faced with these facts, The Band delivers the most reflective and honest of their post-Last Waltz recordings. "Jubilation" is one of The Band's finest hours.
The disc begins fittingly with 'Book Faded Brown,' a description of the virtues of family, which is exactly what The Band and the friends that guest on the album have become. The song features vocalist/bassist Rick Danko's fragile, emotional voice which accurately describes The Band's personal state; Helm's voice is rapidly suffering but he bravely wails his heart out on rockers like 'Last Train To Memphis' and 'Kentucky Downpour,' or on more subtle pieces like the poignant 'Don't Wait.' Also of note is the fact that the Band-members have contributed more to the songwriting than on the previous two albums, resulting in very personal, reflective songs and jubilant celebrations; the care-free 'High Cotton' is as genuine a slice of Americana as anything the group did in their early days, and the salute to their first mentor Ronnie Hawkins 'White Cadillac' certainly fits on this album. Friend John Hiatt's 'Bound By Love' is a nice addition, but the song that will blow loyal fans away the most is the stirring 'If I Should Fail,' a personal anthem of being downtrodden and surrounded, against the odds, and it features Rick Danko's second-best performance on a 90s Band album (the best being 'Too Soon Gone' from "Jericho"). Longtime member and multi-instrumentalist Garth Hudson ends things with a wistful instrumental puzzlingly titled 'French Girls.'
"Jubilation" certainly revealed a group that knew the odds were against them; Danko's death a year later ended The Band's career. Though they still have a loyal following, the critics (and even Robbie Robertson) will probably never give the post-reunion Band's work the respect it deserves. But anyone who takes this hard fact to heart can find comfort in knowing that The Band probably realized it too, and their bravery throughout is admirably shown on their final fight, "Jubilation."

Still very good.......2001-02-18

For a long time I have thought The Band was, if not the top group of the Woodstock Era, among the top three. But, for some reason, probably my interest in newer groups like The Eagles, I did not pursue this interest beyond "Before The Flood." (I took a passing interest in "The Last Waltz") I basically thought The Band was "dead and buried," although I continued to take interest in Bob Dylan,The Stones, and the Grateful Dead throughout the 80's and 90's. I was delighted to learn on the internet last fall that The Band was still making albums, and I bought two, "Jubilation" and Rick Danko's collaboration with Eric Anderson, "Riding on the Blinds." I also bought Eric Anderson's new album, "You Can't Relive The Past." My impression of "Jubilation" and of the others only confirms my previous view, which is that "StageFright" was the #1 album of the Woodstock Era (quite a claim). It should possibly be noted that as I recall, VH-1 did not rank The Band very high on its list of 100 top rock groups (they did make the cut) and also that these albums do not rank very high in sales.

This overture is beautiful. I think Zubin Mehta is a terrific conductor. I would enjoy the music much more if the engineers did a better job recording the CD. There is too much change in the volume level (and not by the composer). If the volume is high it is very high and if low, very low.

A Whiz-Banger!.......2002-10-11

I purchased this CD because I've always enjoyed Suppe's light, bouncy overtures and Zubin Mehta and the Vienna Philharmonic doesn't fail here with it's nice moving tempos and great colorful sound. The trumpet call at the beginning of "Light Cavalry" has always been an attention-getter (a musical alarm clock mind you). Another overture on this disc that I wasn't familiar with was "Vienna Jubilation" (which also starts off with a trumpet call) got my attention also which also includes a somewhat Suppe tradition (the waltz). Very vibrant and beautiful. The rest of the overtures are up to the same performance quality. However, I must say that if you want some of Suppe's overtures that have a faster tempo, then try Solti and the same orchestra if they are still around. I have an old London LP that has four of the mentioned overtures (Light Cavalry, Poet & Peasant, Morning, Noon & Night in Vienna, The Beautiful Galatea). These really move!! If you're looking for Suppe with a tempo that is just a tad slower than Mehta, then try the Janos Sandor/Hungarian State Opera Orchestra on Laserlight. With this CD you get a march (O du mein Ossterreich) plus eight overtures. These are very-well performed and sounds great! All these recommendations (my opinion) are about the best you can get!!!

Dizzying, Whirling, Fantastic, and Superlatively Energetic.......2002-06-06

I certainly made a good purchase with this one. I was in the mood for some peppy overtures AND I GOT 'EM!
The well-known Light Cavalry Overture is well-represented here (even though Mehta takes some liberties in the tempo at the end, I still enjoyed it), as are the almost as well-known Poet and Peasant and Morning, Noon, and Night in Vienna overtures. There isn't a weak track on the whole CD, and my favorite is the Queen of Spades Overture, Track 5. The highly-caffeinated orchestra starts out deceptively quietly, throws in some out-of-nowhere fortissimo chords (a la Haydn Symphony #94), and then begins to spin indefatigably faster and louder, accelerating beautifully even to the last note. You can't help but stay for the rest of the opera. The overtures grab you and won't let you go.

There is nothing but sheer audience candy in any of Suppe's works, but over a hundred years later, those shameless hooks still work. I relish every second of vivacity and bombast that overflows in copious quantities from this CD.

wonderful music from a wonderful artist.......1999-04-05

This is a great CD. It isn't the type that will put you to sleep. It is upbeat. Von Suppe keeps you tapping you foot and bouncing your head throughout the album. My personal favorite is the last one, "Morning, Noon, and Night in Vienna."

Great Album - but it is Sam Cooke with the Soul Stirrers.......2006-03-09

The reviewer below is correct that this appears to be an excellent album of tremendous performances of Black Gospel from the classic period of Black Gospel, well worth having. All you have to do is listen to the recorded samples for proof of that.

However, the recorded samples also reveal that it is the unmistakeable voice of Sam Cooke singing lead for the Soul Stirrers on "Jesus, I'll Never Forget", and not his role model, R.H. Harris. According to the liner notes on my 30+ year old vinyl copy of "The Gospel Soul of Sam Cooke with the Soul Stirrers, Vol. I", Specialty SPS 2116, Cooke joined the Soul Stirrers in 1951, and "Forget" was not recorded till March 2, 1954, WITH Cooke singing lead.

R.H. Harris DOES seem to appear on this album - singing lead for the Christland Singers on "Sell Out to the Master". You can see how Cooke patterned himself after Harris, who uses the same little half-yodeled ornamentation on "Sell Out" that Cooke would later use with the Soul Stirrers and on his pop hits like "You send Me". But these are two different voices. Listen for yourself to the samples of "Forget" and "Sell Out" above, and compare them with samples from any Sam Cooke collection. Both the similarities and the differences should be clear.

If reissues like "Jubilation, Vol. 2" had proper liner notes (Compare the awesome Tony Heilbut collections "When Gospel was Gospel" on Shanachie, or the seminal "The Gospel Sound" on Columbia) then confusion like this would be avoided.

Solid Gospel Intro.......2001-01-24

This CD is a very solid intro to gospel recorded in the "Golden Age" - 1940's and 1950's. The recording quality is uneven, but the performances are outstanding. Many of gospel's most famous groups are represented - The Soul Stirrers, Majalia Jackson, The Staple Singers and many more. Jackson is represented by "How I Got Over," her biggest hit on Apollo Records before she was signed by Columbia (and her style subdued to suit the mass-market) "Jesus, I'll Never Forget" highlights the incredible harmonizing of the Soul Stirrers, with R.H. Harris as lead vocalist. (Harris, of course, was later replaced by Sam Cooke who would go on to fame as a solo pop and soul artist) If nothing else, buy the disc for the live version of "Walk Around Heaven All Day" by the Caravans - Albertina Walker's voice is absolutely unworldly. Overall, this is a great introduction to a wide variety of groups and styles.

Ward (b. 1917) writes the kind of American Romanticism that puts him in line behind Roy Harris and Howard Hanson. Not a bad line to be in. Ward's music is tonal and, in places, exuberant (as in Jubilation Overture from 1945). His Symphony 4 (1958), the major work here, is part of that same Midwestern legacy. The Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra (1983) comes from the composer's interest in jazz and swing from his World War II years playing in the 7th Infantry Division's own swing band. The music is not dated, though. Sonic Structure (1980) is more abstract, but still tonal and lucid in its details. --Paul Cook

I bought this solely for "Once Upon a Time", and was dismayed that the CD is mono, not stereo. The quality of the recordings leaves much to be desired, as many of them lack the pristine quality I'm used to on a CD.

classic arrangements by the classic gentlemen ~ Percy Faith.......2004-02-16

Two albums from the Columbia Records people blending different decades "Li'l Abner" (originally released CL 955 in 1956) and "Broadway Bouquet" (originally released LS 9156 in 1965), sharing the unmistakable style of the "Percy Faith Touch" ~ you know in an instant you're in for the best of the best ~ Duke Ellington was so taken with Faith's arrangements, that he would give anything to be able to arrange in that fashion.

Let's begin with "IT'S A TYPICAL DAY" along with "LOVE IN A HOME", both from "Li'l Abner", wonderful opening counterparts and the stirring arrangements by Maestro Percy Faith ~ "JUBILATON T. CORNPONE", uplifting cue that will keep bouncing in your head for hours, maybe even days ~ "IF I HAD MY DRUTHERS", one of the forgettable tunes from the show ~ "NAMELY YOU", has to be the best and favorite song of the Johnny Mercer and Gene De Paul score ~ by the way, these two composers penned the lively screen musical "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", both scores were sure winners from two talented songwriters, Percy Faith steps up to the podium and takes it to another level.

Now with "Broadway Bouquet", we have perfection within the realm of lush arranging, so flawless "HELLO, DOLLY!" (Jerry Herman), "ONCE UPON A TIME" (Adams/Strouse), "SOMEWHERE" (Sondheim/Bernstein), "SUNRISE, SUNSET/FIDDLER ON THE ROOF" (Harnick/Bock) (one of my all-time favorites, can't get enough of this score), "WHO CAN I TURN TO (WHEN NOBODY NEEDS ME)" (Bricusse/Newley), "A QUIET THING" (Ebb/Kander), "MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY" (Comden/Green/Styne), "WHAT KIND OF FOOL AM I?" (Bricusse/Newley) (two of the best songwriters in the business), "LONG AGO" (David Heneker), "THE SWEETEST SOUNDS" (Richard Rodgers) (his credit of compositions goes through the ceiling, will never be another like 'em), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart) (a wonderful classic that is still popular by today's standards), "THEME FROM "GOLDEN BOY" (Adams Strouse) (another team of composers that have made an impact on the Broadway scene) ~ an example of the "Percy Faith Touch", so effortless, you feel like you're floating on a cloud ~ falls into Percy's many albums of fabulous string arrangements, they grabbed the attention of the listener and wouldn't let go. Can't think of any other arranger/composer who left such a great legacy as this man!

Highly recommend to ALL fans of Percy Faith ~ thanks to Collectables for releasing this collection from the vaults of Columbia Records ~ so listeners sit back, relax and enjoy a small part of Maestro Percy Faith's fabulous career!
