4 out of 5 stars Sil Austin Best Selection.......2007-01-19

I am pleased to find this music. It was difficult to find in 1963. That it is available in 2007 is impressive.

5 out of 5 stars A NEW FAVORITE.......2003-09-23

I HAVE JUST DISCOVERED SIL AUSTIN, AND SO GLAD I DID. MY TWO FAVORITE SAX ARTISTS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN EARL BOSTIC AND FREDDY GARDNER, NOW I HAVE A THIRD. SILS MELODIC PERFORMANCE OF MOSTLY STANDARDS IS SIMPLY GREAT. HE IS ACCOMPANIED BY A FULL ORCHESTRA AND VOICES BUT THEY NEVER INTRUDE ON HIS DOMINATE PERFORMANCES. THERE ARE JUST ENOUGH VARIATIONS IN RHYTHM AND OTHER NUANCES TO ADD A LITTLE INDIVIDUALITY TO EACH ARRANGEMENT.THE LINER NOTES ARE IN A LANGUAGE I DONT RECOGNIZE, BUT WHO CARES, ITS A GREAT CD!

3 out of 5 stars Another controversial album!!.......2006-12-21

Sorry for my low rating, but this time - in comparison to the impact of their best Studio
album "Progressivity", I'm a bit perplexed about it!! Don't get me wrong, the product is good,
the music well mixed and performed in a remarkable way (epecially regarding of their
exploration concerning the sound of their synths), but the style is radically changed, as it
looks like a kind of psichedelic genre, which sounds a bit strange for my ears... apart from
this feature, sometimes their music is odd and very busy, but often resembling some
passages of another similar band - Brand X - in their most meditative moments, and for me
such important elements could be enough to make this album worth checking out at least!!
This is "alternative music" and "relaxed fusion jazz" in the same time, which is very interesting at
the end, so after burning this cd one more time I could give the product another half
star...make your own choice anyway!!

5 out of 5 stars LET'S GO TO OUTER SPACE.........................2006-05-22

I can't really say that this band has really brought much NEW to the table in comparing this cd to their past efforts, but this sound they have carved out is SO mind-boggling and unique unto itself, that it doesn't seem to bother me. Even with owning all their other cds, I still HAVE to have this one as well. They have found their zone and they are straight GOIN" FOR IT! I love this project so much because I love Brand X, but always wish I could here a fresh, crisp version of that stuff as far as modern production goes. Sometimes I almost feel trapped in that '70's sound when I listen to Brand X even though the work is amazing! If you are into mind-expanding music that is VERY BUSY and NATURALLY ODD and does not sound like everything you have ever heard, You will very likely love this album as I do. Though filed under Jazz, THIS is the type of stuff I would TRULY consider "Alternative" music, a label that seemed to just be loosely applied to any and all "rock" music in the early '90's???! This stuff actually is "alternative" to the music you typically here! "jazz fusion" works too, I guess...

4 out of 5 stars Marcus Miller - a natural virtuoso on the bass guitar.......2007-03-16

This is a Japan produced special with tracks of various collaborations between Marcus and other top artists like Lalah Hathaway, Macy Gray, Chaka Kahn and Eric Clapton. However there are also Marcus own main efforts (with his band) like his interpretation of Come Together (John Lennon, Paul Mc Cartney), and his own songs Power and Black. I bought it at Blue Note Tokyo March 14, 2005 and had the CD itself autographed by Marcus himself (sounds better that way ;-)). Only reason I do not give the last star for this album is that several tracks are too funky and dilluted and less "straight on" than I would have preferred. Marcus' concert was intense and full of energy from beginning to end, so I believe I saw him and his compatriots (Pathces Stewart, Keith Anderson, Bobby Sparks, Poogie Bell, Gregoire Maret) at their very best. This CD definetely shows "another side" of Marcus (than the concert) so it will depend on one's taste. My preferred tracks on this CD are Come Together and Power.

      Album Description

Continuing with the Latin theme set out in the first album of the Vibes Series (Latin Vibes: Lounge Selection) we see further exploration of South America's influence on a myriad of contemporary dance music producers. The sun has set on a day's loungin' on the beach and the tempo is increased; as the action moves decidedly onto the dancefloor for the evening.

Respectful of the music's history, the artists here obviously know their stuff, effortlessly blending the old with the new. We hear traditional South American-influenced musicality and organic Latin rhythms weave their magic through a solid backbone of contemporary house grooves and energetic beats.

Latin Vibes 2: Club Selection is compiled and mixed by England's Mettle Music and features some of the biggest names dominating the world's more discerning clubs today including Ananda Project, Kenny Dope, SUMO, Faze Action, Wagon Cookin and John Beltran.

      4 out of 5 stars Solid selection.......2006-04-28

I have a bad habit of expecting too much from a cd. That was not the case for these cd's. I found 6-7 songs on here to be absolutely stunning. 7,8,9 on cd1 had me driving w/out a care in the world.

But what kept it from getting 5 stars was that there are quite a few songs that are just too "sporatic" for my taste. But all in all it is a very good cd for the "discerning" grown-up trendsetters. Me, i like it a bit more playful.

5 out of 5 stars Brazilian Flavoured Funk.......2005-10-27

        5 out of 5 stars A perfectly done anthologie..........2003-12-17

This cd has highlights from Cab's 1030-39 period, when his band was playing "hot" dance music, and swinging really hard. Calloway on this "L'art Vocal" series, is represented here as a vocalist(they also have the series on Lena Horn & an exellent Fats Waller series), who fronted one of the best big bands of the period. His vocals are wonderful and slightly over the top. As far as his singing ballads goes, he was hep and cool, not at all like the rhythmless Jolson, as another less educated reviewer wrote. Calloways's vocals on ballads could be dramatic yet hep as always a good example of his sounding great on a ballad is his singing on "The Lady With The Fan"(an essential Calloway performance), and "Moonglow", while those may not be on this set, you can acquire those on his more complete Calssics Chrono series which has almost all of his reocrdings. In any case this is a fine sampler of his mid period recordings, however you will also want to explore the peiod before this with Cab calloway and the Missourians(his hottest band od all!). Then you will want his R&B sides from the 40's. but this is a start... and a good one at that, as it features many uptempo hot numbers and an occasional ballad, which features Cab as a crooner, who has more in common with Bing Crosby then Al Joson.

4 out of 5 stars Best compilation of Cab for the 30s.......2003-03-28

Having purchased the terrific 'Are You Hep to the Jive?' CD which covers the period 1939-47, I then faced the task of finding a decent anthology of Cab's work for 1930-9. Having tried other discs and been disappointed, I have included that this is the best for this earlier period. The trouble with Cab anthologies is that, while he recorded some great songs, he also recorded a lot of cheesy stuff, and usually both categories are mixed together. Cab was at his best when he was being outrageous, singing his 'Hi-de-Ho' wailers and so on. But when he tried to sing ballads, he'd sing in this corny Al Jolson-style, which may have been popular at the time, but rather embarassing now.

On the whole, this CD focuses on Cab's good stuff. The opening 'St Louis Blues' is a definitive example of Cab's early style where he almost seems to hold on to a note forever. We also get the rare opportunity of hearing the original 1931 version of 'Minnie the Moocher', perhaps not as good as the 1942 version but its nice to have both in your collection. In fact we're treated to no less than five songs featuring Minnie and Smokey Joe, namely 'Minnie the Moocher' itself, 'Lady with the Fan', 'Zaz Zuh Zaz', 'Kickin' the Gong Around' and 'The Ghost of Smokey Joe'. Only 'Minnie the Moocher's Wedding Day' and 'Mr Paganini, Swing for Minnie' are missing, so until a CD is issued to include the entire Moocher series, I guess this is the closest we'll get.

If there was one song I wouldn't have included on this disc, it would be 'Miss Otis Regrets', a fine song by other people but, for Cab, it's more in that cheesy category referred to previously. But, despite the odd questionable selection, we do get to hear some of Cab's finest including the scat standard 'Nagasaki' and 'Jumpin' Jive', Cab's big hit from the movie 'Stormy Weather'.

I recommend 'Are You Hep to the Jive?' to hear Cab's best work for 1939-47. For pre-1939 recordings, I would recommend this album, as well as Columbia/Legacy's two "Best of the Big Bands" discs.

There's no real problems with the album, and each song is distinct, so it's overall a good mixtape. However, no songs really stand out as incredible, none you find yourself singing along to in the car. If you want some unique and good rap to listen ot in the background, this is it, as it beats 90% other albums out there.
