Chico O'Farrill as major composer.......2001-03-07

Latin Jazz has never gotten the credit it deserves (did you hear Ken Burns mention it?), and Chico O'Farrill is unjustly left off most lists of our greatest 20th Century composers. The O'Farrill - Gillespie partnership goes back to the 1940s, and this album finds both of them, well after the era they made their names in, still at an absolute zenith of their creative ability. I would compare this to the Gil Evans - Miles Davis collaborations.

I have over 30 Diz pieces and have seen him a few times. This one, while more contemporary in that is an orchestral arrangement by Chico O' Farrill, is REALLY tremendous and along with Bahiana are my two favorite later Diz albums. It ain't bebop, it's latin and if you are listenin' to it wantin' bebop, you should put on a bebop album. I happen to really love any of Diz's latin/afro-cuban albums. You can also hear latin songs on even his earliest Bluebird recordings and they are fantastic.

I disagree with the listener who thought that this had a "Tonight Show" band sound. Especially as to the first piece (which was the entire 1st side of the vinyl album when it came out), the arrangement and performances are varied and exciting. Dizzy's playing is excellent as well. I have found that many people who are rock fans with little exposure to jazz respond well to the first piece on this album, and think that it is quite exciting and interesting. Dizzy had made umpteen albums with his bop soloing over an acoustic quartet, and this album was an admirable attempt to give him a different style to play in.

However, I liked the CD very much. Though the CD was not what I expected from Dizzy Gillespie, because it can sound sort of contemporary in a "Hawaii 5-0" theme song kind of way, it is a wonderful album and is still a welcome addition to your Dizzy collection.

A Whole Lot of Fun.......2001-10-28

This is classic, foot-tapping, latin jazz. It is a very nice collection from different artists such as Poncho Sanchez, Tito Puente, Cal Tjader and Pete Escovito. These are classics that have a lot of zip in them.
The one clunker was "Day Tripper." I really do not listen to Latin Jazz to hear remakes of Beatles numbers. Skip that one and you will have a lot of fun with this.

BLAST FROM THE FANTASTIC PAST.......2005-09-18

I've had this album since the '60's. No matter how scratched I could never give it up. I had to have it to go to sleep back then and then just to listen to the lovely notes. I've always loved Tjader. There's never been another like him. But this is one of his very best! So many years have gone by, but yet this remains brand new. The rhythms, melody, lovely strings, we had the best back then. Hopefully, the young people today will come to enjoy all this as we did back then!

The Prophet Speaks.......2003-02-23

Many of the tunes on this CD would be re-recorded by Verve on a few of Tjader's sensual period. I call it that because these tunes helpped many of woo the girls in many a "bachelor pad on many a KLH,Marantz,Dual system. But the music puts you in a mood that melts any pensive mood. Trust me this is one CD that centers around the rythm AND the melody. Then get the Verve release Soul Burst and you'll have it all, except maybe the DUAL turntable.

CAL TJADER- "SENTIMENTAL MOODS".......2000-05-22

Originally released by Fantasy as "Latin For Lovers", "Sentimental Moods", packs a punch for all "bolero" lovers. In this album Tjader completely masters the bolero style accompanied by a brilliant string ensemble, very reminiscent of those used by Vicentico Valdes, Roberto Ledesma, Gilberto Monroig, Chucho Avellanet and other top latin american boleristas. Added to this CD are bonus tracks from another Tjader Fantasy album entitled "San Francisco Moods". Tjader definitely created a highly "romantic mood" and more of these bolero sessions should have been recorded by Fantasy. Great arrangements and performances by Jack Weeks, Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, Paul Horn, Al McKibbon,Vince Guaraldi and the brilliant Albert White Strings Ensemble.

A compliation of compilations........2002-03-20

Concord Jazz has some great artists - many are showcased here. This is a re-packaging of three compilations from their Jazz Moods series - Cocktail Party, Groovin' the Blues and Cha Cha Party. The first CD is instrumental, the second has several vocal tracks and the third has limited vocals used primarily as accents. (Tito Puente's Oye Como Va's the most verbose.) Great listening across all three disks.

What keeps me from giving this package five stars is the poor liner notes. The artists are listed on the back cover of the package, but the track listings on the inside list only the times and the songwriter credits. Sidemen? I guess Concord figures you don't care about the sidemen; you're supposed to by partying with this collection.

Perhaps the most exciting of the BMG/Tropical Series, "Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods" two volume series, both the compilation choice and sound of this volume will please the most demanding jazz fans. Listen to Tito Puente at his absolute best in "Birdland After Dark", "Havana After Dark","Night Ritual", "Witch Doctor's Nightmare" and "3-D Mambo", Perez "Mambo King"Prado in "Mosaico Cubano/Cuban Sketch" and "Flight of the Bumblebee", Shorty Rogers in "Un Poco Loco", Noro Morales in "Serenata Ritmica" and Eddie "Vibes"Cano in "Ecstasy" and "Yesterdays" and you will agree with me that this historical compilation is unique in sound an rhythm. Another Tropical Series gem!

This early BMG/Tropical Series release,revealed, in my opinion what producer Domingo Echevarria intended to do: Unique compilations, highlighting the originality, versatility and genius of the RCA Victor Latin artists, with an unprecedented brilliance in sound, in other words how RCA Victor recordings always ought to be, that famous sound we all knew. In this compilation Perez Prado, Shorty Rogers, Eddie Cano, Tito Puente and Tony Martinez are at their best. If you like jazz with afro-cuban flavor, then this is your CD. Get it while supplies last!
