Chuck D of Public Enemy once prophesized that if artists didn't own their masters (tapes), the masters will own the artists. Well, hip-hop's fave gangster CEO Suge Knight owns most of his former high-profile label mates' master tapes and continues to issue collections of dated works by Tha Dogg Pound, Dr. Dre, and now Snoop. Originally entitled Dead Man Walking to scare the willies out of Snoop, this release comes with a big fat greasy caveat emptor. Sure, this is a ghetto fab collection of the Doggfather's finest pre-No Limit and Doggystyle Records moments dating back to his brilliant cover of Biz Markie's "Vapors" on Tha Doggfather album. That said, Snoop wants nothing to do with this release because he won't receive any proceeds from it and has urged his fans not to buy it. Contractual shenanigans aside, this release is off the hook and contains most of Snoop's finest career headbangers, from "Gin and Juice" to "Who Am I (What's My Name)." A great purchase if you can live with your conscience. --Dalton HigginsCustomer Reviews:
Not That Great.......2006-05-30
Anyway my ratings for the songs are
1. Nuthin But A G Thang 10/10 Classic with Dr Dre, great beats
2. Head Doctor 9/10 One of the best tracks from Dead Man Walkin
3. Gin And Juice 10/10 Classic, my favourite famous song from Doggystyle
4. Eastside Party 10/10 Snoop in all verses and Nate Dogg in the chorus, this was worth releasing
5. Murder Was The Case Remix 10/10 I'm not sure which I like better, this or the original version. Their both great
6. Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None) 9.5/10 Even though some of the lyrics are a bit purverted its still great with bangin beats
7. Doggfather Remix 6/10 Don't like this, it has no business being on here and Tha Doggfather original version should be on here instead
8. Midnight Love 10/10 Another unreleased that was definitely worth releasing. My favourite unreleased track with Eastside Party being my second
9. Eastside 6/10 I don't think that this song was meant to ever be released
10. Who Am I? (What's My Name?) 10/10 Classic, my second favourite famous song from Doggystyle
11. Doggy Dogg World 10/10 My third favourite famous song from Doggystyle, the beats are good and relaxing
12. Too High (Poly High) 7/10 Another song that shouldn't have seen the light of day
13. Vapors 10/10 Bangin beats, solo where Snoop talks about the lives of all the members of Tha Dogg Pound
14. Usual Suspects 8/10 This songs alright, but its still not top quality
15. Keep It Real 1/10 Hate this song, definitely shouldn't have been released. Snoop doesn't even have one verse on this
16. Snoop Bounce Roc N Roll Remix 5/10 This song is wack! Where's Snoop Bounce original version.

3 1/2 stars-This IS Phil's Best!.......2007-07-12
Contained herein are in my oppinion most of his most essential recordings. There is no CD on the general market that contains such a great list of Harris titles but this one.Other CD compilations will contain some of these tunes,or alot but not all.
Especially hard to come by up until now are Harris standards like "Row,row, row,","The Old Master Painter","The Persian Kitten" & "Is it true what they say about Dixie".The only tune not here that would make this a perfect release would be "Muskrat Ramble".
Harris' patter/singing style is an art that goes way back in musical history.A popular arena of its' use in more recent times was the English Music Halls in England and its' North American equivalent Vaudeville. And one of Vaudeville's most famous exponents of this form was Bert Williams of whom Harris was a big fan of.In fact he does a cover version of Williams' "Somebody Else-Not me" on this CD,accent and all.Lovely to hear.
Now the makers of this CD (Rex) is yet another English company specializing in releasing artist compliations that are hard to find and obtain. And as is the custom with these releases they use records from private collections, clean them up and digitalize them. This release it says has had the CEDAR process used on it which certainly has helped. There has also been obvious equalizing and reverb used in re-recording these pieces but its' usage has generally been done quite judiciously.Overall it's not too bad and certainly could have been alot worse but just remember their sources and realize the sound will not be up to the crispness and immediacy of the original masters owned by Sony/BMG.
Overall though this release is a pretty good catch for novice fans wanting to learn more about this great entertainer or for veteran Harris fans who've been looking for some sides that have never been available up until now.The sound is pretty good and the price is defintely right!
One of the greatest entertainers.......2007-05-13

And His Best Is Pretty Damned Good.......2005-11-30
In its forty minutes, AT HIS BEST covers a fair bit of musical terrain, pairing gritty and surprisingly intelligent social commentary with arrangements that hint at mainstream pop, pseudoclassical sentiment, Latin groove and folk minimalism. The lack of liner notes is rather frustrating, as we're left to wonder just who else was involved here and how; but then again, the mystery of the whole thing does add to its already-considerable appeal.
Though his take on the singer/songwriter oeuvre is quirky and distinctive, Rodriguez basically falls into the post-Dylan school of his era, his melodies spare and catchy, his lyrics at once ruminative and caustic. AT HIS BEST opens with a tuneful and slightly cynical self-projection into the New Testament, "Crucify Your Mind," then offers us a wailing hymn to a dope peddler, "Sugar Man." Both showcase Rodriguez's gifts as a songsmith and vocalist, and both manage (as does the material in general) to slip in and out of the dated. "Sandrevan Lullabye" is where things start to get unsparing, with the longer running time giving the singer a chance to catalogue the modern American sorrows of 1970 - which are, of course, still fully relevant thirty-five years later. The pleasant, loping melodies of "Inner City Blues," "Can't Get Away," "I'll Slip Away," "I Wonder" and "Street Boy" bring a slightly brighter and poppier sensibility to their essentially minor-keyed tales of urban blight and failed love, and all would have made quite passable singles. Perhaps the highlight of the whole collection, however, is "Cause," a wrenching five-and-a-half-minute indictment of contemporary society written and sung in a manner worthy of, and perhaps even darker than, Dylan or Neil Young at around the same time. "Jane S. Piddy" is a nice breezy folk-rocker, and "Establishment Blues," as its title suggests, brings things to a close with the same admixture of whimsy and woe that so distinguishes the album as a whole.
Whether the lack of material under Rodriguez's name is the reason for his obscurity or vice versa, what little we have available serves as a poignant reminder of the accidence of fame. No doubt about it, musicians of lesser talent were selling a lot more records than this guy even in the more artistically-minded days of 1970. But ironically, the very obscurity of the singer and his small body of work is no small part of its pleasure. Were AT HIS BEST a remastered compendium drawn from a dozen albums released over fifteen or twenty years to varying levels of artistic and commercial success, one could never approach it with the ever-fresh perspective and sense of wonder that is so refreshingly possible here; and that makes listening to Rodriguez, wherever one may choose to place him within or without the rock music pantheon, in some respects a more rewarding and personal experience than merely reexamining that pantheon for the umpteenth inevitable time.
I wonder (why!).......2005-11-22
It is a mystery why his music has never made its way in North America. IT IS SO GOOD! Anybody will love "I wonder" the first time they hear it, but so many beautiful songs are on this album. You gotta buy it, really. If you love Dylan or Jim Croce, it is impossible that you do not love Rodriguez.
A mysterious classic.......2004-02-09
When I first heard his voice in Australia in the early 80's, I was drawn in. His lyrics often address the darkness of American society as well as celebrate love and the lightness of being. Let this man's kind clear voice and take you back, forward and make the present one of sublime joy. I recommend his earlier and even lesser known "After the Fact" CD which is available at One World.com in South Africa. The recording is not as polished but the songs are oh so sweet. I like best kept secrets and I also hope more people come to know the brilliance of Jesus Rodriguez.

Major improvement over the 1995 cd release. A must-have for every Lanza fan!.......2006-03-08
This is also Lanza's best album ever, I think. Every Lanza fan should get this cd. It is well worth the price, even if you own the older cd. Many thanks to BMG for this amazing release!
The best reproduction of Lanza's finest album........2006-02-24
(For a detailed review of Lanza's singing here, see my review of the conventional CD of the same name elsewhere on Amazon.)
As with the 1995 CD, the great Mario! album is coupled here with The Vagabond King, recorded in July, 1959 - seven months after the earlier album. Although not in the same class as the Mario! album - either vocally or soundwise - this is also the best I've ever heard this recording. The highlights (Drinking Song, Love Me Tonight, Nocturne, etc) belie Lanza's failing health, and offer overwhelming proof that just three months before his death, the old romantic magic was still intact. This CD also includes a previously unreleased reprise of the lovely Nocturne.
All in all, then, this is a magnificent release, and one that whets the appetite for further SACD Lanza couplings. Top on the list of deserving recordings would be a "twofer" of the 1958 For the First Time soundtrack coupled with the 1959 Mario Lanza Sings Caruso Favorites, both of which are Living Stereo releases sorely in need of decent sound reproduction. How about it, BMG/Sony?

Few Could Sing Neapolitan Songs like Lanza.......2007-03-13
Mario Lanza was not Neapolitan but he mastered the dialect and the music and the lyrics in a way that few have been able to articulate. As always, Lanza gives a wonderful performance on this album which does not need or deserve the pieces from the Vagabond King.
The greatest voice of this century and the twentieth century comes out in this splendid work. Just having the Neapolitan songs sung by Mario is worth the cost. I recommend it highly for lovers of the best and brightest, like Lanza was.
Canto Neapolitane.......2006-02-08
Lanzas diction is uncannily Neapolitan, which is no mean feat considering that the Neapolitan dialect is all but impossile to duplicate by anyone not born and raised in the region. Even such greats as Corelli and del Monaco had problems with it and the much over-rated Pavarotti never even came close.
Lanza nailed it!
The song selection is great with the exception of Funicula...that song doesn't work no matter who sings it.
My personal favs are Dichitenchello Vuie, Voce la Notte, and Passione...Canta'p'me being a close second.
Lanzas gift for pouring his every emotion into his singing really comes forth on these songs. Moreso even than on any of his operatic selections which are peerless in their own right.
However; in my mind, Lanza always did his best work on the Neapolitan songs.
The songs from the soundtrack of the film "The Vagabond King" are about as lame as can be. They are right along the usual line of Hollywood junk which Lanza recorded too much of in his short career.
Thus the 4 star rating. I turn the CD off once the Neapolitan stuff is over with.
The only other major distraction here is not due to anything Mario could have controlled or done differently. It's in that that RCA decided to release this album in this then newly discovered "stereo surround" format, which was nothing more than overblown reverb effects. This worked well for a thin voiced Elvis, but it didn't fare to well with this type of material or Marios larger than life voice.
In the end, this is, and always will be a collection of the finest sung Neapolitan songs ever recorded.
Bravo Commendatore Lanza! Bravo!
