The first important leader date from one of jazz's most seminal figures and farsighted practitioners. Having made his reputation in large measure from playing with bop giant Charlie Parker, Davis confounded expectations when he embraced the "cool" arranging style of Gil Evans, an arranger for Claude Thornhill's band. Evans, who was employing unique voicings by adding French horns and tuba to Thornhill's instrumentations, also emphasized a diminished use of vibrato in both reeds and brass, producing a drier, "cool" sound. Two of Evans's arrangements, "Boplicity" and "Moon Dreams," appear on the album. Also involved are baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan, who contributed such outstanding tunes as "Jeru" and "Venus de Milo," and Modern Jazz Quartet pianist John Lewis. The result is a date that has withstood the tests of time, fashion, and Davis's own extraordinary growth as a performer.

An enhanced set, The Complete Birth of the Cool features previously bootlegged live recordings of the nonet at the Royal Roost in New York in 1948. Although the sound quality is far from perfect, the performances are remarkable, and worth the additional expense for the serious fan. --Fred Goodman

5 out of 5 stars Legendary Cool Jazz, One Awesome Debut!.......2007-06-27

The songs on The Birth of the Cool are like the ninja of old. They do what they need to, fast, and leave. But unlike ninja attacks, these songs (which include classics like "Jeru", "Venus de Milo" and "Boplicity") are not painful in the least. The arrangements are tight and the songs are melodic, slightly Hollywood-esque but quite beautiful and well-performed. The songs themselves are also quite brief, as I implied a few sentence back - nothing over five minutes, in fact. The nonet plays together quite well, complementing each other throughout. They all have the mellow sound down - the album kinda sounds alike, but with great songs like "Rogue", "Rocker" and "Israel" on hand, who can complain? Now the only song I don't really like is "Darn That Dream", which falls in my list of Ten Songs We've All Heard Too Many Times Before. As for the rest? Get it. Not before Kind of Blue, 'Round about Midnight or In a Silent Way, but still get it!

5 out of 5 stars birth of the cool school..........2007-06-20

can't go wrong with this Miles Davis recording in your collection. With arrangements by Gerry Mulligan, Gil Evans and John Lewis this is a compilation of 12 sides recorded by the Miles Davis nonet(nine musicians). This legendary recording is a jazz classic. The music moves away from bepop which tended to smaller groups of musicians and the music from this compilation led to the birth of the cool West Coast Sound of jazz though it originated on the East Coast. Beautiful arrangements and lively tunes. Gil Evans would meet with musicians in his apartment on the top of Chinese laundry and help compose the arrangements. The list of musicians on these recordings includes Miles Davis on trumpet, Gerry Mulligan on baritone sax, Lee Konitz alto sax, Max Roach on drums. A must for any jazz collection and jazz beginner. Gil Evans would later team with Miles on Porgy and Bess, Sketches of Spain.

3 out of 5 stars A must have for your collection.......2007-03-27

These recordings are a must have for an understanding of the shear evolution of jazz, but not the best.

3 out of 5 stars Good not Great.......2007-03-14

There a few good songs on the ablum but it isn't great

5 out of 5 stars labor of love.......2007-02-16

Having only recently jumped on the Jazz scene as a 24 year veteran of the drum, i don't know as if i am qualified to write a review for those into this boat, but i must say that as a neophyte, i am and will be for a long time to come, a Davis fan. And this, the birth of the cool is an album that i will treasure as one of my own. very smooth sounds, breathy on the horns and completely listenable, a must have for any burgeoning collection.

Kenny Burrell turned 75 on July 31, 2006. That night he finished a five-day run at Yoshi's in Oakland and then the next day played with the Gerald Wilson Orchestra in Santa Cruz. This CD commemorates the occasion with performances from both nights, presenting Burrell's sparkling guitar in settings that range from an intimate trio to fronting Wilson's 17 -piece band. The material reflects Burrell's long career and broad associations. Among the small group tracks, there's a beautiful quartet sequence of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints," J.J. Johnson's "Lament," and Miles Davis's "All Blues," each demonstrating Burrell's consummate lyricism and absolute mastery of the mainstream modern. The big-band tracks pick up on associations with Duke Ellington, including the elegant "Sophisticated Lady" and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," with the 88-year-old Wilson providing a sparkling foundation that has Burrell and company soaring. Best of all is the extended "A Night in Tunisia" with a septet that has organist Joey DeFrancesco and flutist Hubert Laws. --Stuart Broomer

Chet Baker was at the height of his popularity, the epitome of cool jazz, when these tracks were recorded for Pacific Jazz between 1952 and 1954. While Baker could hold his own in bop settings, the emphasis in this collection is squarely on his lyrical approach to ballads, whether singing or playing trumpet, with just a rhythm section or an added string orchestra. His vocals were absolutely distinctive, sung in a high-pitched, even fragile voice seemingly drained of emotion and yet possessing an inherent charm, a detachment that might be both the antithesis of style and its definition, whether it's heard as sensitivity or indifference. The singing is a double of his trumpet playing here, spare and barely present but achieving much through nuance and suggestion. Pianist Russ Freeman is an almost constant partner, supplying deft chords and harmonic daring, amplifying Baker's ideas. Their empathy is especially evident in the beautiful instrumental "Moon Love," but it's just as significant on signature Baker songs such as "My Funny Valentine," "Let's Get Lost," and "Like Someone in Love." --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars Sweet and Sultry and Simply Spectacular!.......2007-01-05

This music is perfect for a rainy day curled up on the couch by the fire with your significant other by your side. It's a shame they don't make music like this anymore. My favorite of all Chet's albums and one of my all-time favorites period. His rendition of "My Funny Valentine" is my personal favorite (even trumping Sinatra's wonderful version). There is not one song that disappoints, the whole CD is an absolute treasure. The man knew his limitations as a singer, and although he wasn't blessed with a voice like 'Ol Blue Eyes' or Johnny Hartman it's the raw emotion that he puts into the songs and the way he is able to phrase them (ala Billie Holiday) that makes it so special. Also his trumpet playing is absolutely superb as usual. One of the most romantic albums you will ever hear! I promise you will not be disappointed. Now go out and buy it now and play it on that special date with the woman (or man) of your dreams.

Once Chet Baker arrived in California from his native Oklahoma, his career exploded. After landing gigs with Charlie Parker and Gerry Mulligan, Baker soon found himself a solo star and bandleader. Not long after that, he also found himself whispering love songs into a microphone. Baker was not gifted with the most robust voice of the day. Indeed, listening to pure singers like Nat "King" Cole or Johnny Hartman can expose Baker's weaknesses, but what Baker did, he did well. By choosing wistful, so-young, so-in-love tunes, Baker was able to pour his heart into the material, sketching soft, romantic moods and painting himself as the broken-hearted innocent. The effect can be devastating, as Baker's voice clings to the melody, threatening to disintegrate at any moment. Many of his best tunes--"I Fall in Love Too Easily," "But Not for Me," "Let's Get Lost"--are collected here, and as such, there is no better place to begin an appreciation of Baker's unique singing. --S. 5 out of 5 stars WhAt'S "TeChNiCaL StAnDpOiNt"? .......2006-11-09

Technical standpoint? Is that how you listen to music? Sorry. I have no idea as to "technical standpoint". The music makes me feel alive and it makes me feel good, as a bohemian should. Chet baker has over 60 albums and has remained popular for over 50 years. I doubt if anything "heard in local clubs" will ever leave a legacy close to Mr. Baker's. An acquired taste? I was hooked in the first thirty seconds of the first Chet Baker song I ever heard and I've yet to hear anything he has done to change my mind. Most folks I know that like Chet Baker feel the same. Stop thinking and listen, this music is life at its best.

5 out of 5 stars The place to start, and to come back to.......2006-08-06

Over years of listening to jazz, this is the album I most often return to. It has absolutely everything: great songs (some of the greatest). A spectacular voice unlike Frank's or Ella's or Sarah's or anyone's--a voice that's all things to all people. (Whatever you want to hear in Baker's voice--depth, surface, warmth, detachment, male, female, and just about any other pairing of opposites--is right there for the taking.) You get ballads and lilting uptempos. Accessibility (this is not music to struggle to enjoy.) Innocence and experience. Summer-afternoon arrangements to float you away. A brilliant trumpet soloist (who was, however unlikely, the same guy as the amazing vocalist). Melody and improvisation.... If I were introducing a newbie to jazz, this is the album I'd start with. Then, after you listen to a thousand others, play Chet singing again and realize: this one tops them all. How did Baker do it? He probably shouldn't have been able to, given the way he lived lived--and that too feels like a piece of this recording's pleasure.

    5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2006-07-06

excellent performances by chet baker. his voice is unique and is highly recommended to all jazz lovers. It is so rare to find so many songs by chet baker in one collection and here are some wonderful songsby a wonderful jaxx singer and player.

    3 out of 5 stars Acquired Taste.......2006-03-26

People are a bit too crazy with all the 5 star reviews. From a technical standpoint, he is a pretty poor vocalist. Most of the jazz vocals I have heard in local clubs are better than Chet and as for more widely known, recorded artists, they all leave Chet in the dust. Of course, technical skill is not the whole thing. Certain vocalists have a way of singing that resonates with some people. Chet is one of those kinds of singers. It is certainly possible to love his singing, but for many people, it would be an acquired taste. For those who really put a lot of emphasis on technical skills, it is unlikely that they will ever be able to deal with Chet the singer.

Gerry Mulligan's off-the-bandstand relationship with Chet Baker could never be considered amiable, but once the two West Coast bad boys picked up the horns, everything was sweetness and light, though often underscored by a subtle and sweet tension. That's never been more apparent than on The Original Quartet with Chet Baker, a limited- edition, two-CD set (42 tracks!) that compiles the group's entire Pacific Jazz output (with the exception of their collaborations with Lee Konitz, available on Konitz Meets Mulligan. As the band that defined the swinging and sophisto West Coast sound, these Mulligan/Baker sides are laid-back but also sly and cerebral. While the rhythm section (bassists include Red Mitchell, Joe Mondragon, Bob Whitlock, and Carson Smith; drums were brushed by Chico Hamilton and Larry Bunker) lays back and affords the horns plenty of room, Baker and Mulligan circle each other like boxers one moment, lovers the next. It's a dance you don't want to miss. --S. Duda

    Album Description

The pianoless Gerry Mulligan Quartet, which launched the careers of Mulligan, Chet Baker and Chico Hamilton, lasted only one year (June of '52-'53). These two remastered CDs cover all 42 tracks that the quartet recorded for Pacific Jazz in that one year in which the band invented itself, evolved, hit the big time and then disappeared. Recorded live at the Haig and in various studios, this music is essential modern jazz.

5 out of 5 stars A Cornerstone of Modern Jazz.......2006-05-31

The quartet that baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan formed with trumpeter Chet Baker in Los Angeles in 1952 enjoyed considerable popular success during its single year of existence; but as this complete collection of the band's Pacific Jazz sides proves, flash in this case had a solid grounding in substance. The simple - if decidedly unorthodox - decision not to employ a piano, thereby eliminating his harmonic center, pushed Mulligan to the very forefront of jazz's postwar development, and resulted in some of the most sparkling and tuneful performances in the history of the genre.
Starting with the leader's very first (pre-Baker) California recordings, GERRY MULLIGAN QUARTET traces the rapid evolution of this gifted group's sound, sensibility and personnel (An early version of the unit included a pianist but no drummer!), allowing listeners to share in the excitement these young men must have felt as they recorded three-minute masterpieces like "Lullaby of the Leaves" and "Soft Shoe" - pivotal works which sound as fresh, and dare I say it as important, today as they ever could have in their own era. Oft-covered warhorses "Makin' Whoopee," "My Old Flame" and "Darn that Dream" get spectacular makeovers here - the last in two different versions from which I defy anyone to pick a favorite. The live sets which made Mulligan's and Baker's reputations are well represented too, with bouncers like "Poinciana" balanced by such moody classics as "My Funny Valentine" and Mulligan's own "Funhouse." It's all here.
...Well, almost all. Those duly enchanted by this generous collection should seek out OJC's GERRY MULLIGAN QUARTET/CHUBBY JACKSON BIG BAND disc, REUNION and KONITZ MEETS MULLIGAN for more of these major musicians' efforts; all are well worth it.

    5 out of 5 stars Stunningly good.......2005-08-24

I wasn't very familiar with either Gerry Mulligan or Chet Baker when I bought this CD. Jazz is a relatively new interest for me, and I'm still feeling my way around. The overwhelmingly positive reviews sold me, though, and I decided to pick this one up. I'm *so* glad I did.

It's always a pleasure to hear such talented instrumentalists working together, but this CD takes it to another level entirely. You can almost feel the energy crackling between Mulligan and Baker when they play off each other's riffs. It's just amazing stuff. Whenever I play these CDs, I end up playing them a second time, and a third, and a fourth.

Get this set. You will not be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolute beauty.......2005-03-07

I don't know if I should even attempt to compose a review for this release. I'm not certain I could even approach anything resembling "justice" for it. I'm sure I'll fall far short. But, that aside, here goes.

This cd, as my title indicates, is absolutely beautiful. To start, I would recommend getting this cd along with "Chet with Russ Freeman" and the Chet Baker/Art Pepper release that was once known as "Playboys" when on Capitol Records that is now called "Picture of Heath" in it's reissued form. These three releases combined make for a great combination/trilogy.

That said, this cd is fantastic. It captures Chet, and Mulligan, in their infancy, right on the cusp of what was to come. You can still hear the naivete in Chet's playing and while it's not as great as his "Chet" cd (which is absolutely, hands-down, my all-time favorite), it is just as magical. Just in a different way. This is the absolute epitome of the "West Coast Vibe." And, now, for me living here in Miami Beach and having left my home of San Francisco (where I lived for over 25 years), it brings back many, many memories of being very young, slaving away at menial jobs to go spend all my money at record stores to pick up jazz lp's (yes, lp's). All my minimum wage earnings went to Chet, Pepper, Getz, Garland, Mitchell, Adderly, Miles, MJQ, Monk, Webster, Hawkins, Milt, etc, etc, etc. Then, I'd take them home, cherish them, make mix tapes, and then hit the PCH or the city streets in my Ford Falcon with this as my company.

That's the truth. A bit of a diversion from a "review" of this cd, but it kind of, kind of, catches a vibe about this cd that, if you can at all dig what I'm saying (and hopefully, if you're checking out this release anyway - you're a soul I can relate to and CAN catch my drift), then you can get this vibe. But, if you know anything about this scene, then you know what I mean anyway. This is fluid, soul-touching stuff. If it needs any explanation, chances are there isn't anyone who can really explain it to you, nor anyone who would want to, and this is probably something you'd never get. But, it probably won't need explaining. You get this, you put it in, you close your eyes, you'll know. Top down, sunny day or rain on window pane with your heart full of sadness. Oddly, it fits both 'cause I've tried it. But just do yourself a favor and pick this baby up, along with the others I mentioned. You will be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Baritone Sax and Baker Horn.......2001-02-06

It does not take many words to tell you that these 2 CD's have the great and unique deep baritone sax along with that smooth horn of Chet Baker to make a winning combo. Buy it. You'll like it. You'll love it. There's some pretty nifty drum work on some tracks as well.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Jazz.......2000-03-01

This set is the best I have ever heard from Gerry Mulligan or Chet Baker. They started as musicians just trying to make names for themselves, and they definitely succeeded. If you are looking for a lot of well-known tunes, I have to warn you, these CD's don't have a whole lot. It makes up with style and great harmonies and melodies. Whether it's Mulligan blowing out his great sound into genius solos or Baker playing a melody with Mulligan on a harmony or countermelody, these CD's don't have any bad songs. The rhythym sections change throughout the album, as do the years they're from, but the purity of the cool jazz stays the same. I would highly recommend this to any fans of Mulligan, Baker, cool jazz, or to any jazz listeners who want to hear a wonderful collaboration between two great musicians.

The more I listen the more I like it! It is NOT contempoary Jazz if that means Jazz Lite, if it means created now then yes.

Very much based, thank goodness, on mainstream Jazz, despite a number of new tunes by the artist, in traditional modes.
Starts off with a spirited version Big Noise (and father Clint whistling) which repeats in a remixed version at the end which is even more compelling. Marrakesh is exotic, with a sensuous soprano sax like a charmed cobra and again it's a tossup whether the original or remix at the end are better.

Tunes range from funk to late night moody. Always thought provoking, never out of control. All are compelling, especially the title track.

Equalization mix on bass is humpy in upper register.

Kyle Eastwood could rest on the laurels of his famous last name. After all, he is the son of actor | director Clint Eastwood. But Kyle is an accomplished jazz bassist with a following all his own.

1998's From There To Here was Kyle's debut that paid respect to the jazz he was raised on. Joni Mitchell did a memorable cover of Marvin Gaye's Trouble Man. The cd gained Eastwood plenty of fans because it was an impressive effort of classic jazz.

Paris Blue is the latest release from Kyle Eastwood. He charts new territory with a mix of traditional and contemporary jazz. His roots remain in jazz but this time Kyle experiments with different flavors.

Le Pont Royal and Solferino recall early Blue Note. There's a hint of smooth jazz with the hip-bop Muse and funk-heavy Cosmo. Marrakech, inspired by a trip to Morocco, has an ambient world music vibe to it.

Father Clint makes a cameo appearance whistling on Big Noise From Winnetka, a dance floor remake of the old Bob Crosby | Bob Haggart swing hit. Clint suggested Kyle record a new version after playing him the original 78 rpm recording. The result is a hip, retro feeling tune that remains true to the original.

There are two remixes included on Paris Blue that are sure to make some jazz purists cringe. Big Noise From Winnetka is remixed into an upbeat house track. There's also an urban flavored remix of Marrakech.

This guy is an excellent bassist standing on his with own two feet. If you gravitate towards modal Kind of Blue jazz with an injection of high energy, then this CD will fulfill your intellectual fancy whilst tapping your conservative toe. Beautifully recorded with a great acoustic overall tone with that 'live off the floor' sound. No slouches on this record, top self musicianship and even a tasteful yet brief cameo appearance from a whistling tough guy.

Birth of the Cool is the first important leader date from Miles Davis, one of jazz's most seminal figures and farsighted practitioners. An enhanced set, The Complete Birth of the Cool expands the original issue with previously bootlegged live recordings of Davis's nonet at the Royal Roost in New York in 1948. Although the sound quality is far from perfect, the performances are remarkable, and worth the additional expense for the serious fan. --Fred Goodman

This CD seems to have lots of reviews about Miles, the significance of the sessions, etc., so I won't repeat. Let me just say that this version (in contrast to the other version without the bonus material) is worth the price for the radio broadcasts alone! WAY COOL! I know they're supposed to be an extra bonus, but these are my favorite cuts from the CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Cool...Daddio.......2005-03-08

This album is awesome and was the first solo album by Miles Davis(1926-1991). In 1948, Miles left bebop pianeer Charlie Parker to form his own style of jazz and along with Gil Evans(1912-1988) formed a famous nonet featuring the legedary drummer Max Roach. The album was recorded from 1949-1950 but since the jazz audience didn't really "get" this new form in a time when Bebop ruled the jazz clubs and, more importantly, the record sales, the album wasn't released by Capital Records until 1957, after Miles' famous performance at the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival and the release of his 5 classic "first great quintet" recordings(John Coltrane(1926-1967)-Tenor Sax, Red Garland-Piano, Paul Chambers-Bass, and "Philly" Joe Jones(1923-1985) on drums), 4 from Prestige Records-Workin', Steamin', Relaxin', and Cookin' w/ the Miles Davis Quintet, and one from Columbia, the classic 'Round About Midnight. This album is very important in the evolution of modern jazz and this version of the album is made even better with the very rare bootlegged live material from New York's Royal Roost in September, 1948. Unlike the vocal song recorded in 1962 released on the classic second great quintet album, Sorcerer(1967), the vocal on this album is actually sung very well by Kenny Hawgood, I believe, on the song "Darn that Dream." I recommend this album to newcomers and fans of Miles Davis alike, but to those who are just getting into the great world of jazz and consider this one too big a leap, may I suggest the great jazz/fusion trio of recordings(In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew, and Tribute to Jack Johnson) or the second great quintet(Wayne Shorter-tenor sax, Herbie Hancock-piano, Ron Carter-bass, and the late Great Tony Williams(1945-1997) on drums) or if you want the tried and true sextet classic, go straight to the 1959 jazz landmark, Kind of Blue.

5 out of 5 stars Darn That Dream.......2004-12-28

I'm in total agreement with Robert Kornfeld, Jr., another reviewer of this work, who, like me has listened to this music for a "couple of decades." If it is not obvious from all of the reviews, this collection defines the genre. Selections of this album were even considered for that all time classic "Tyrants From An Other World," but were not included due to production expenses. Time sure flies when you're having fun, ay' Bob?

5 out of 5 stars Great Landmark Classic in Jazz, greater w/bonus live tracks.......2004-09-07

Ahh, Birth of the Cool has just gotten a facelift. There are extra live tracks on it which gives it a great perspective and gives you insight on the 2 dimensions of the Miles Davis Nonet, live and in the studio. This is one of Miles Davis' greatest and most influential recordings and started modern jazz as we know it and was very new for that time since the only type of jazz then was swing and hard bebop. This is definately an essential Miles Davis album This gem is pretty much the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band for jazz and most of it still sounds fresh today because it certainly is in most jazz reportoirs. 'Nuff said.

4 out of 5 stars Nice and Cool.......2007-07-08

This fine example of popular cool singing is very fine and agreable, although I'm not quite certain that the jazz criteria are met to the foolest extent (there are equally cool but more jazzy artists - for instance Mel Torme)... This is very good singing and quite competent orchestral playing, but on the level of lesser performances by Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald.
Great thing is that this CD brings both versions of the album; I recommend the later stereo recording; Christy seems to develop a bit between two versions.
Rugolo's arrangements are OK, but not quite to my taste.

4 out of 5 stars It must be June..........2007-03-08

Of all the great jazz ladies, June Christy is still very much a particular favourite of mine. Her singing is totally organic, straight to the point. Nothing sounds artificial or forced. Here, Blue Note Records has reissued both stereo and mono versions of her 1953 album 'Something Cool' on one great-value disc. While Christy found initial fame under the musical direction of Stan Kenton, her series of albums on the Capitol label (through to the early 1960s) acutely displayed her sublime talents as a jazz diva, and never more so than on her debut platter.

Under the guidance of Pete Rugolo and his orchestra, Christy glides through "It Could Happen to You" (in one of the greatest arrangements EVER), "Midnight Sun", "I Should Care", and "I'll Take Romance" (also memorably covered by Eydie Gorme that same year). The title track, "Something Cool" (B. Barnes), became Christy's signature song.

The original 1953 album of 'Something Cool' was a big success for June Christy and established her as a formidable talent. During the first innovations of stereo LPs, Christy went back into the Capitol studios with Rugolo to re-record the album for the stereophonic format in 1960.

Technically, there isn't much to distinguish the stereo and mono cuts of 'Something Cool'. June Christy delivers fabulous vocals on both of them, but brings a refined showmanship to the stereo version. Her rendition of "Something Cool" is a bit more calculated and smokey on the 1960 set, too.

It's so wonderful to be able to relish June Christy on both versions of her landmark debut album.

5 out of 5 stars Two Albums over the time STEREO came into power.......2006-09-06

You HAVE to get this album not only for June Christy's great skill as a band vocalist, and for the stellar playing of the many fine jazz and studio cats who laid down these tracks (many come from Kenton. . .but don't think that this is just another Kenton album. . Christy definitely had her own album here!).

You HAVE to get this to hear what the exact same arrangements played by mostly the same performers sound like in beautiful HiFi MONO and then again in beautiful STEREO. It is a treat to your hearing faculties to compare the two. Like DAY and NIGHT. . .Night and Day. . .Hey! There's a song in that line. . .

The album is great with or without the Mono / Stereo thing. . .but I sure wish this kind of thing was done more often (compare one version of a particular recording, to a Re-recording of the same thing. It's great. By the way. . .

June Christy was an excellent singer, who became famous with Stan Kenton in the early 1950's. This album is a Concept Album, in the sense that it projects a sort of bluesy. . .boosey. . .saloon singer ethos. Christy is one who definitely lived this and sent out heartfelt sound in this arena. It is too bad that she did not avoid the ethos. But we can be happy that we have the wonderful sound of June really singing her heart out. The backing arrangements and band are second to none.

    5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2006-02-21

I missed her when I was a little kid in the 50s. It wasn't until I lived with a woman older than me in the 1970s who was a big fan from her own high school days that I heard June Christy. My father had been a big band fan and I was pretty familiar with Ella and Sara and Billie Holiday. I thought white girl singers at the time were all Rosemary Clooney and Doris Day. Then I heard June and she took my heart away. Now, at 55, I have all her capitol records, an autographed picture from the forties, a copy of her obituary that was published in the Chicago Tribune in 1990, and I still play her records (now CDs), and they still give me that exquisite joy you get from something that is emotionally perfect. This CD is particularly good, having first the mono recordings of these songs, and then the stereo recordings, in the right order. I believe this to be one of the first real concept type albums, in the sense that it fits together remarkably well, in the order that it is in. I know there was an initial shorter release on the older vinyl. And I know there are some ep versions of this set, but I am convinced that the order of the songs as it appears twice on this CD is the order that June and Pete Rugolo put it in and meant it to be heard in. This album/CD is a story, a narrative. And you can find in it a real person. June's singing, while not technically as good as some of her contemporaries, is stunning because of the intimacy she brings to the lyrics. She is right there, actually living the song. And the arrangements are just perfect. This is one of the greatest records anybody in any genre ever made.

5 out of 5 stars Cause the weathers so hot..........2005-09-04

Recorded in the fifties under the direction of Pete Rugalo, one of the great albums of the era, "Something Cool", is not to be missed. If you are not familiar with," The Misty Miss Christy", you are in for a treat. A unique song stylist, who's voice will delight and spellbind you. This recording is the combined monoral and stereo sessions, for the album was so popular that they went back into the studio and re recorded tunes in the new process-stereo. The title tune is a story song about a woman in a bar who regales her gentleman caller with snapshots from her life-real or imagined. A great song on a disc that is loaded with memorable tunes. This is one of those "desert island" recordings. I'm listening to it at this very moment-it's the most!

4 out of 5 stars Chetophobes should give this one a try..........2006-05-03

This album was a very pleasant surprise. Without ever having actually heard him, I had formed a vaguely negative conception of Chet Baker's playing--white kid,West Coast,"cool school",couldn't really play the trumpet at all well, soft plaintive tone and a one-octave range, even Gerry Mulligan said he had no conception of what it meant to be a serious musician,etc.etc. It's true that as a trumpet technician, he's not even remotely in the same class as Dizzy Gillespie,Fats Navarro,Clifford Brown, or even a randomly selected Berklee trumpet major. But at least on this CD,he plays with a lot of drive, swings hard, has a lot of good melodic ideas and enough technique to execute them. All the talk about his flowing, lyrical lines has,it turns out,a solid basis in fact.He was not a disciplined well-schooled musician, but he had a gift for melody that no amount of study and practice can produce. I knew Russ Freeman only from some rather eccentric interjections on a few big-band tunes, but he turns out to have been a fine pianist, with real drive and authority. In short, this is quite a good album, well worth trying out, particularly if you currently share my former prejudice against Baker.[I should add that his singing, here mercifully confined to one track, strikes me as downright creepy; I gather I'm not alone in thinking this.On the evidence of this CD,one should stick to the trumpet playing.]

5 out of 5 stars A Pairing Made In Heaven!.......2000-05-30

Pairing Chet Baker with Russ Freeman in the '50s resulted in some of the most gorgeous recordings of any era. Baker was an icon of the jazz world for his trumpet playing, his singing (almost sounding like a trumpet) and his incredible looks, which really stood out in the rather homely jazz world (jazz guys do not usually look like rock stars!). Russ Freeman was a fabulous pianist plus also a composer. Together the two men played the most romantic, most emotional music extant in jazz. Theirs is not the "intellectual" jazz as popularized by Dave Brubeck. Warning: Buying one Chet Baker CD can be dangerous for the wallet. Once you own one of his discs, you will want all of them. I certainly did and now have the cd collection to prove it! I also bought every recording I was able to find that he did with Russ Freeman.

5 out of 5 stars Early Chet at His Best.......2000-03-31

These recordings, made between February and October 1953, feature Baker at the threshold of his carreer and vividly show his ceativity and promise. Anyone who questions why he continues to be held in such high esteem, should find the answer in listening to this CD.

There's a story that Charlie Parker, upon returning to New York from a trip to California, warned Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis about a new, young trumpet player out there named Chet Baker. These recordings demonstrate that the warning was justified.

5 out of 5 stars This is top notch West Coast playing.......1999-12-13

This disc is actually "Quartet: Russ Freeman and Chet Baker" & is a Russ Freeman session issued under Chet's name. Russ composed 6 of the 8 tunes & he makes Chet work for his wages.

The album opens amusingly with "Love Nest," otherwise known as the theme for the Burns & Allen Show. Russ takes the lovely "Summer Sketch" solo half of the way through, then bringing Chet in for no more than a wonderfully pensive turn at the melody. That's followed by, for me, the album's two most swinging cuts, "An Afternoon at Home" & "Say When." They also pay homage to Billy Strayhorn with a romantic arrangement of "Lush Life."

This is top notch West Coast playing, with Shelly Manne on sticks & Leroy Vinnegar on big fiddle. Recorded in 1956. No singing. Check out the thumbnails on the insert by photographer William Claxton then check out the collections of great photos Claxton shot of this era & these talented musicians.

Recorded with pianist Russ Freeman's ensemble in 1954 and 1956, this is the archetypal Baker release, and the first one to get if you're testing the waters. Baker sings standards (including "My Funny Valentine," of course) as if stepping out of an androgynous dream, although it would take another 20 years of hard living for his voice to take on otherworldly qualities. Relaxed West Coast swing such as this can't be duplicated today. In its sweetly melancholic post- war foreboding, this is a Mike Davis book set to music. "Sings" should be on the required listening list for any history class covering the city of L.A. --D. Strauss

5 out of 5 stars "For That Old, Old Feeling . . . Is Still In My Heart".......2006-07-17

"You'll hear Chet Baker's trumpet as well as his voice on some of these songs; that's hardly startling, but it is startling to discover a voice and a horn of such quality with but a single source. Chet Baker has turned out to be a musician with such a wonderfully nice voice, it is a problem whether to speak of him as a 'trumpet player who also sings' or as a 'singer who also plays trumpet'." ~ Gerald Heard, Liner Notes ~

To me Chet Baker will always be famously known as the "trumpet player who also sings." This CD speaks of him more of a singer for this is the only album he was featured not only as a trumpet player but also as a singer. He superbly interpreted fourteen of the best standards of all-time with his soft and mellow voice and his wonderfully captivating trumpet playing. He was ably supported by Russ Freeman on piano and celeste, James Bond and Carson Smith on bass, Peter Littman, Lawrence Marable and Bob Neel on drums.

This CD will never disappoint the listeners for this is one of his best recordings. Its repertoire includes an impressive collection of great standards penned by George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin, Sammy Cahn, Jule Styne, Jim Van Heusen, Johnny Burke, Hoagy Carmichael, Mack Gordon, Harry Warren, Frank Loesser, Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart and many others. The best tracks for me include such lovely and timeless standard as Les Brown and Sammy Fain's "That Old Feeling."

"There'll be no new romance for me
    It's foolish to start
    For that old feeling
    Is still in my heart."

You will also be pleased to hear "Like Someone In Love," "But Not For Me," "My Funny Valentine," "Time After Time" and my very highlight - one of my ultimate favorites from the pens of Mack Gordon and Harry Warren - "There Will Never Be Another You."

    Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars CHET BAKER SINGS........2006-05-01

Of all Chet Baker recordings, this is the original from the mid-50s, and it remains the best. No quirky phrasings, just pure Chet. Don't confuse it with 'Chet Baker Sings and Plays,' a later recording with similar arrangements which seems much less fresh than the original, slower, chet's voice a bit strained and not as sincere, if that's the right word. His trumpet lags in many instances; and the piano work I found to be lacking. If you want to start a Chet collection, first get the original, CHET BAKER SINGS.

5 out of 5 stars The James Dean of Jazz.......2005-09-20

This, ladies and gentlemen, may be the best vocal Jazz album I have ever heard (I say have heard because I've only listened to maybe fifteen albums in the genre). By just destroying any credentials I had in the previous statement, lets move on to the review. This is a West Coast Jazz classic, truly one of the most overlooked outputs of the Cool School of Jazz. While not as technically competant as "Kind of Blue", I manage to listen to it just as much, if not more. Every song included on this disc is a classic standard, and Baker's version of "My Funny Valentine" is the greatest version of the song, beating out Sinatra's rendition by a mile. The instrumentation itself is flawless, as Mr. Baker's trumpet playing guides the band. He was as adept at the trumpet as he was at singing. The low-key and minimalist style of the band is perfect for the songs, and is one of the best bands in Jazz history. Influential and flawless, this is a must-have for any fan of post-war Jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Chet Baker Sings!!! .......2005-03-21

Chet Baker is not the most talented singer in the world. He does get by doing it though. He's never off key, and has a good ear for pitch, but technically, he's not a great singer. But this is Chet Baker. Not a great singer, but his voice has warmth and it is unique.

Chet is not a singer. He is a trumpet player, who happens to sing sometimes. Somebody probaly talked him into singing, maybe the record company.

This album is a showcase for his voice. He goes through standards like But Not For Me, and Time After Time like he would if he was doing the melody with his horn. Then he compliments his warm singing voice with his warm trumpet tone.

Chet Baker is a very unique musician. His looks, his singing, his trumpet playing, his fame, it looked like he had it all. Actually he had a very horrible life, in his later years.

This is Chet Baker! Chet on the west coast, singing, blowing, and everything in between.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD if you like his vocals.......2005-01-12

As the title says, this is Chet Baker Sings, so if you're looking for his instrumental work, this isn't it. It's a tired cliche I know, but you either love or hate Baker's singing voice. I happen to love it, but if you've never heard him sing, this guy was no Louis Armstrong! Baker's fragile, soft voice often sounded just on the edge of losing the tune entirely. This might sound horrible if you've never heard him, but I think it lends a uniqely emotional edge to this collection of standards. You have to hear it to make up your mind. The closest comparison I can think of is a more subdued Morrissey of all people. Singing jazz.

Pacific Jazz puts together two recordings, from 1954 & 1956 to form this compilation, together with a surprisingly good sound for such old recordings. Baker takes you on a tour through the Great American Songbook decades before Rod Stewart thought of it, with his unique vocals and trumpet punctuation. The small combos led on both sessions by Russ Freeman pretty much stay in the background and let Baker do his thing.

One factor I take into giving stars is "playability," which is simply how often I play something. This CD gets pulled out a lot so I'm giving it 5 stars.
