1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

5 out of 5 stars Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

5 out of 5 stars JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

Though barely past 40 on this disc, Kathy Mattea, best known for sentimental hits like "Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses" and "Where've You Been," has obviously been feeling some of the pangs of midlife. Themes of loss, atonement, and spiritual reckoning echo through 2000's The Innocent Years, her first album in three years and one of her very best ever. Mattea possesses a warm, magnificently expressive alto that has suffered comparisons (both fair and unfair) to Canadian singer Anne Murray's amiable purr. Yet Mattea has seldom sounded so impassioned, inspired, and delightfully contemporary as she does on this exquisite song collection. The title tune reaches far beyond poignant nostalgia and captures a painful inner yearning for spiritual rejuvenation and the rebirth of innocence. Throughout Mattea translates her spiritual and emotional quest into a deeply satisfying journey for her listeners as well. --Bob Allen

After three years of release, the music on this disc remains fresh and listen-able.

5 out of 5 stars One of Kathy's BEST.......2002-01-04

I'm not going to review each cut on this collection. Since I've found this, it's been on my CD player just about everyday. I'd like to point out which track is my favorite, but I can't because each one has touched me in its own way. They're thoughful, introspective, intelligent, and very well crafted. They're songs that I wished I'd written. I've been a fan of Kathy's pretty much since her beginnings, but I feel that this is the most incredible collection of songs she's put out to date. And I think that her voice has never been sweeter. Sure, it's no longer "mainstream country", but she's scored a major hit with me with this CD. (Country radio plays such trivial stuff now anyway.....the really exceptional songs never make it on the air.) I can see this being one of my absolute favorites for many, many moons. It should be in everyone's collection.

1 out of 5 stars Great voice - shame about the songs.......2001-04-30

I think Mattea's "Love Travels" CD is excellent - a selection of great songs - pity she couldn't repeat the trick on "Innocent Years". Instead she puts her money on a bunch of third rate no hopers out of the Nashville Hit Factory stable. The lyrics are crass, tired, sentimental cliches and the melodies are completely forgettable. Even the musicians seem uninspired. It sounds a bit like a poor imitation of Mary Chapin Carpenter (many of the same backing band members). Mattea's own composition "Innocent Years" is probably the best of a bad bunch with the gospel flavoured "Why Can't We" a close second. The rest are non-runners. I've tried to listen to it again several times but each time I have to skip to the next track. What a waste of a great voice. Don't waste your money - buy Erica Wheeler, Cheryl Wheeler, Gretchen Peters, Carrie Newcomer ...........

4 out of 5 stars Reflections and Truths After the Innocence.......2000-12-10

In what some say may be her last release aimed at a commercial country audience, Mattea emphasizes her reflective side, often trying to cut through the noise of contemporary life. On the title track, she looks back at her youth, wanting "To see my face at 16 again/When the boy down the street was my best friend." The quasi-spiritual "Why Can't We" takes dead aim at how overemphasis on possessions can get in the way of happiness: "People with nothing/Can hold onto something/If they can be happy/Why can't we." She bullseyes the germ of both the spark of a relationship ("Out of the Blue") and the depth of commitment ("That's the Deal"). Combine these songs with Mattea's friendly, powerful alto that makes you feel you've known her all your life, and the result is a special, moving album that finds its way into the CD player with frequency. Mattea ends on a lively note with the bonus track "BFD," an exercise in abbreviations and somewhat mature humor.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2000-10-17

In listening to this album, I am finally sure what good, true, love for music is. Kathy Mattea has shown through these songs that she has an amazing idea of love and spirituality. I have found this album to be both inspiring and full of thought inhancing material. I urge anyone who loves beautiful voices and amazing songs to buy this album.

      Album Description

CLASSIC HIT PARADE... songs of the 50's to the 80's. POP Piano with a PUNCH...best describes this collection of timeless tunes. Blockbuster HITS like ...UNCHAINED MELODY...THE ROSE...MY GIRL are just some of the great songs wonderfully showcased on this CD. Grand Piano and Hammond organ seem to be the main weapons of choice here with a solid backup of horns, strings, bass and drums. It all sort of sounds like.. if the late great Floyd Cramer was using Bob Dylan's old group..THE BAND..at a recording session! There is a lot of energy going on here and each song is different, ranging from Floyd's Country Classic..LAST DATE..to the smooth Motown feel of The Temptation's..MY GIRL. A couple of the original tunes are pretty cool, especially.. WOOG'S BLUES..This thing really rocks!! This CD may bring you a tear, a smile or a memory..and..WARNING..Listening to it has been known to cause dancing!!

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I've been looking for one of these.......2003-06-14

I've always been a big Floyd Cramer fan....got most of his albums, and I kind of keep an eye out for piano CDs that are similar. I found one with Douglas Jack's MUSIC FOR MEMORIES
      Vol. 1!
He doesn't play just like Floyd, but it reminds me a lot of his style and he go's after the same kind of everyday Hit Songs.
      Here is some individual favorite song comments;
track 1..Riley Street Rag...I like this ..real catchy melody
      with a European flavor.
track 2..Love potion #9..Don't think I have ever heard an
instrumental version of this song ..good groove !
track 5..Woog's Blues....sort of sounds like most blues songs
I've ever heard, all rolled into one...REALLY COOL
feel and I especially like the Hammond Organ and horns!
Anyway....I SURE DO LIKE THIS CD!...I hope there's going to
      be more of them!!

      5 out of 5 stars A must buy........2003-04-13

This album is excellent and the choice of material is perfect. It is professionally produced and the performance is right up there with the best. You will definitely find yourself singing along with this music. It is a must buy.

4 out of 5 stars Love this piano music........2003-04-08

I bought this CD recently, and was very impressed with the overall sound, the arrangements, the production, and the excellent recording. I would most certainly recommend this to anyone who is into good piano classics. Great product for sure!
