Surprisingly Good, though slim.......2003-08-25
Here you'll find the genius of the composition possessed by Duke and Swee' Pea, although not the men themselves. Amazingly, the CD makes you forget this oversight with great selections. While you don't actually HEAR Duke or Billy (one of the jazz world's most tragically underrated composers and pianists) you'll think that you did due to the brillance of their songs and some very "Dukish" performances. Bookending the album with Johnny Hodges groups doesn't hurt--his tone and the Ellington badnmates always knock me out. There's an interesting "Black Butterfly" from 1946, which is notable for being a more obscure tune and and obscure artist, but the same can't be said of Oscar Peterson on "Sophisticated Lady" but Peterson's talent is too incredible to be obscure. Stephane Grapelli is moving on "Sentimental Mood," probably inspired by his early-1960s collaborations with the Ellington band. Former Duke great Ben Webster joins Gerry Mulligan for a inspired "Chelsea Bridge," but this version still isn't as good as the one he cut with Strayhorn accompanying him in the early 1950s. Sonny Criss does a great version of "Day Dream" that'll bring you back to your formica table and martinis of 1963, and Ray Bryant is admirable on a jazzy "Lush Life" although it doesn't quite capture the torment and sadness of Strayhorn's life that inspired it. A real standout is Stan Getz,of all people, on "Blood Count." The song is not for every performer, of course, being Strayhorn's last major work, the story of the IV drip of his blood transfusion while undergoing cancer treatment soon before his death.Getz gives a great performance here, playing wonderfully off the bass's "drip-drips" and bringing a haunting. late-night hospital visit sense to it. Buy this if you don't really know of Duke/Billy's talents as composers. Duke's major works are very well-known, but it's a shame how little recognition Strayhorn has gotten, despite Dave Hadju's terrrific biography. Fortuneatley, the Dutch Jazz orchestra has recorded some of Strayhorn's long-hidden work, but much of his original performances and compositions have not yet seen the light of day. So listen to Ray Bryant here and sing the lyrics as he goes..."I'll live a lush life in some small dive..."

Classic Big-Band music........2002-12-09
Let me begin this review by stating that the reviewer below me (who trashed this album) has no idea what he or she is talking about. I myself listen to a lot of Basie and this collection of some of the b-sides and hits by Basie is great. The band is strong throughout and the compositions cannot be described in any way other than classic. The organ tracks are also really nice, and with Basie all-stars like Snooky Young, Al Aarons and Freddie Green, this album can't go wrong. Basie's playing on the whole record is him, no more no less, his minimalist style shines brightly. "Straight Life" is a nice allegra swinger with some nice woodwind work on the theme. Classic Basie sound here. "Pleasingly Plump" is a beautiful swing ballad with that classic subtle sound. Snooky Young's trumpet solo is appropriate for this song and the ensemble playing is mesmerizing. "I'll Always Be In Love With You" is one of Basie's organ showcases and might make you feel like you're in a ballpark at first but this track is definitely nice. Basie's playing is the highlight of the song. "Lady In Lace" is an instant classic and the shout chorus is unbelieveable. The whole theme is smooth and really suits the title. The ensemble playing is the highlight of this piece, while Basie keeps the whole thing together with light-hearted chords. "Count Me In" is another favorite of mine, with a great theme. The theme is repeated many times but in a slightly different way each time and it swings beyond belief. "Making Whoopee" is a classic Basie tune and if you don't like this one you probably aren't a fan of his. This trombone showcase is very light and emotional at the same time. There is a string of three nice slower songs in "I Want A Little Girl", "Lullaby For Jolie" and a song by The Beatles "Michelle". These tracks top off the sensitivity of this record, while "Eventide" has more hard ensemble playing and a darker feel that is not quite as familiar with Basie but still comes out nicely. "KC Organ Blues" has Basie on the organ again and it's a nice track that really brings back the feel of Kansas City blues music that was played in the 1940's. "Softly With Feeling" is a nice Neal Hefti composition that ends this Verve collection perfectly, ending this great musical journey through big band swing. A couple of these songs have shown up on Basie's mainstream releases (like "Michelle" and "Makin' Whoppee") but a lot of these pieces became lost on out of print albums (like Basie Land, a long lost album that included "Count Me In").
P.S. Amazon you are currently holding two of my reviews that I posted long ago, one of Eazy-E and another that I cannot currently remember, but please post them. I'm sure you have them.
It is not ATOMIC its just a BOMB........2000-11-26
A very disappointing collection from verve.Particulary two tracks with the mushy organ sound have the ambiance of a holiday inn lounge.very difficult to get through those tracks.Stay with classic Basie and avoid this hodge podge. If you like the basie sound you will be dissapointed.

Customer Reviews:
Survey of a Master.......2006-12-15
If this survey is really representative, then Bird never really played anything bad. However, I've heard better stuff from him, like his upbeat rendition of Night and Day. Most of the cuts on this CD are Charlie Parker with orchestra. I have two problems with that: 1) whenever the strings come in, I always imagine that I hear Timmy calling for Lassie in the background; 2) Bird's improvisational playing is so far "beyond" straight orchestral playing that the two don't seem to blend seamlessly. The few small ensemble cuts are the highlights of this piece, but Bird himself is great throughout. I just wouldn't call it, "Best of" because I've heard better from him.
Very nice, if not exciting stuff by Bird.......2003-08-02
This is an interesting, slightly uneven compilation. Much of it is drawn from Charlie Parker's dates with string sections that sold so well in the early 1950's. Some of these arrangements may sounda bit corny, Mitch Miller style stuff, but some of them are very beautiful, among these "I'll Remember April" and "Dancing in the Dark." There's also an excellent big-band backing for "I can't Get Started" with features Oscar Peterson at piano. It's a great pleasure to hear Bird's sax blending in and out with the strings on many numbers, as if this was just another small group session. Speaking of which, those selections are the true highlight of this album, especially "Ballade," a 1950 date with Coleman hawkins, hank Jones, Ray Brown and Buddy Rich, which is rich, emotive, surprising, and perfect midnight jazz. Also in this vein is another 1950 date, also with Rich, but this time featuring Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk (!) and Curly Russell on bass. And the purchase price is worth it just to hear "Embraceable You" with Rich, Brown, Jones, the amazing Roy Eldridge, and two of the great tenor sax men, Flip Phillips and Lester Young. This is a great introduction to Bird's sensitive standard side, much like My Favorite Things or the Johnny Hartman album for John Coltrane. In short, it's worth it.

Customer Reviews:
Each Song is Perfect, Masterful Verve Compilation.......2003-08-18
What we have here is a masterpiece of mood. That silky, late night mood that gives birth to all kinds of romantic thoughts--some wistful, some satisfying, some unbearably sad, lonely or even hopeful. Verve has done an incredible job of selecting a wide range of performers, songs, and time periods and succeed in making this an indispensible jazz collection. Dinah Washington's acapella notes at the beginning of the "i'll Close My Eyes" is a perfect curtain-raiser; Stephane Grapelli's short, melancholy "Souvenir de Villagen" is a perfect closing theme. Some true standouts in a collection of them: Oscar Peterson giving one of the most tender piano solos in his career on "I Loves You, Porgy," and a haunting, smokey "My Funny Valentine" from sax great Ben Webster. In the vocal deparment, Billie Holiday turns in a surprisingly upbeat "Darn That Dream" near the end of her life that actually supplies some hope amid her despair; and Joao Gilberto pleading of Brazilian love in "O Grande Amor." The Joe Williams "Embraceable You" is from 1989, and shows the blues great at a different level, more intimate and vulnerable, although he's still creatively jazzy. Other greats are the very sad duets "Maybe September" from Jimmy Smith/Wes Montgomery and "Turn out the Stars" from subtle masters Bill Evans and Jim Hall. Mel Torme's vocal group and Count Basie's orchestra work their usual mastery, and perhaps the most sublime recording is the First Lady of Song herself backed up by that greatest of jazz bands, Duke Ellington and his orchestra in "I Didn't Know About You" which is not a mistake you should make in regarding this album, which is most definetly worth knowing about.
Hail Verve for an amazing Compilation.......2003-08-14
Words fail me when I try to describe the emotions present in the songs on this collection. Verve has truly done masterful work in selecting songs with that certain midnight mood, that star-crossed lover, intimate feeling that jazz romance is supposed to be, all dark blue night and purple horizons. There's a vareity of feeling here, but an overall brillance that makes this worth every penny. The only problem would be length, proving that no good album is too short. Some favorites: Oscar Peterson plays "I Loves You, Porgy" with such a delicate tenderness and wistful longing that it'll make you stop whatever you're doing and just be DRAWN IN. Billie Holiday sings "Darn that Dream" near the end of her life, but there's a surprising hopefulness in this interpretation that sets it off from her gloomier side. A 1989 Joe Williams "Embraceable You" shows a different Joe than the one who scatted with Basie in the 1950s-- this Joe is more emotional and sensitive in his later years, but still not afraid to twist the melody and words in a fun, seductive way. Speaking of seductive, Ben Webster plays the Chet Baker staple "My Funny Valentine" through a smokey mist that enables the listener to hear shades of the tune never contemplated before. The underrated Prysock emotes true heartbreak with the string-backed vocal "Teardrops in the Rain." Ella and Duke work magnificently, as always: "Didn't Know about You" is probably the most romatic cut here, except maybe for Joao Gilberto's gravity-defying stroll through "O Grande Amor." The Evans/Hall and Montgomery/Smith collaborations are atmospheric and contemplative, reminiscent of autumns and lost love...Dinah Washington is one hell of a curtain-opener with "I'll Close My Eyes," alternately hopeful, bluesy, and desperate in it's longing, and it doesn't get much better than that.
Some Extraordinary Stuff from Verve Vaults.......2003-08-10
The people at Verve Records really know how to set a mood when they make a jazz compliation album, as both the "Night Out" box set and the whole "Jazz 'Round Midnight" series prove. This is an alsum for the budget-minded jazz fan who doesn't have the cash for each selection, but Verve makes it worth every penny. There's every style of midnight music here, from wistfulness (Count Basie's "Softly With Feeling") to mounrful sadness (Wes Montgomery and Jimmy Smith's "Maybe September") and of course, romantic happiness (Ella Fitzgerald and Duke's duet on "Didn't Know About You"). There are some great standout tracks here, especially Oscar Peterson playing "I Loves You, Porgy" and making it incredibly cool and beautiful, and Ben Webster sounding mysteriously smoky and sad on "My Funny Valentine." Verve can also be commended for a diverse line-up: where else can you find Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holliday(a surprisingly upbeat "Darn that Dream')Stephane Grapelli, Joa Gilberto, Bill Evans, and Arthur Prysock in the same place? However, this means no Chet Baker or Charlie Parker, and their lack of inclusion os notable. But in the end it doesn't really matter, this is a 16-song album of great material from start to finish, and as the first song openes with Dinah Washingtoon's acapella voice rising on "I'll Close My Eyes," you'll know you made the right purchase.
