Robert Redford's fable of a cynical, young, white war veteran (Matt Damon) learning the perfect golf swing--and the meanings of life--from a mysterious black caddy (Will Smith) is typically rich in subtexts, from racial discrimination to armchair existential philosophy. As she did for the period dramaThe Cider House Rules, English composer Rachel Portman imbues Vance with an American sense of time and place. Bookended by the bluesy jazz of Fats Waller, Mugsy Spanier, and Duke Ellington, Portman's elegant orchestral score is rich in powerful brass and string-driven melody and emotional nuances. Portman once again displays a strong affinity for the plaintive resolve and emotionally longing colors of Aaron Copland's most familiar works, and there are moments here that subtly evoke passages of that composer's Lincoln Portrait. It's a fine irony of modern film that one of Copland's spiritual heirs and most effective practitioners of his essentially male American musical ethos is a soft-spoken Englishwoman. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
A soundtrack as wonderful as the movie!.......2005-08-17
When I first saw the picture, the music was one of the two bigger impacts it had on me (cinematography being the other). I had one of those experiences where as soon as the credits were finished I was already planning on purchasing the soundtrack. Problem is the average CD store did not hold it. Lucky for all of us there is Amazon.com!
The music composed by Rachel Portman is nothing short of wonderful! Very American in its orchestration and has often reminded me of the score to JFK (John Williams) & The Natural (Randy Newman/ironically another Redford film). From the scenes where Damon's on the golf course and the camera performs its classic Hitchcock maneuver, to the humorous driving sound as Theron's character takes on the city councilmen, this score proves to be one that must be cherished by all movie music goers.
This is a soundtrack that can inspire people with imagination and heighten the experience of outdoor activities. I myself have played this score while hiking back home and it has performed beautifully. When I play this in my free time it has allowed me to drift away from troubles and distress.
As for the tracks that aren't Portman's composition, they are equally enjoyable. The sound of Muggsy Spanier, Ellington, & Fats Waller are just pure boogie, woogie, oogie know what I mean? Makes you wanna swing.
It's a good soundtrack, one that I am lucky to have in my horde. If you can get it, I highly recommend it.
Why is this soundtrack so hard to find?.......2004-02-18
It goes without saying that a good score can either brilliantly enhance or possibly downright destroy a movie. With the film "The Legend of Bagger Vance" you have a beautiful story accented by beautiful scenery and beautiful period sets and costumes. Anything less than a beautiful score could lessen the appeal and, ultimately, the certain quality that could make this good movie great. Rachel Portman has developed a reputation for making okay movies unforgettable. Any less of a score could have ruined "The Cider House Rules" or even more so "Chocolat". Ms. Portman's score is a perfect example of how image and sound should come together to create something beautiful. In addition to the evocative and nostalgic opening fanfare-like theme, Ms. Portman welds together at least three other prominent themes, as well as a virtual abundance of recurring motifs. But, unlike her recent score CD for "The Human Stain", this album contains a much more varied mix of music that, most times, leaves the listener simply wanting more, but at the same time feeling totally satisfied. Unfortunately, if this review has successfully whet your appetite for this album, all you have to do now is find a copy for a reasonable amount of money. This soundtrack is highly reccommended, but good luck finding it.
The Legend of Bagger Vance.......2003-02-20
Great soundtrack, very relaxing and emotional. Very pleased with the cd music, but disappointed in what I had to pay for it. Also, the seller represented it as NEW and it was not. It had been resealed!
This soundtrack was worthy of an oscar........2002-11-07
When I saw this film I remember thinking, "what an extraordinary soundtrack" and I immediately went out and got the cd. And now a few years later it almost always is in my cd player. I love, love, love soundtracks and this is a homerun to me. I don't remember what the competititon was for the oscars that year but I wish it would have won. I don't even remember if it got a nomination. If you like Randy Newman's work, Aaron Copeland and maybe Hans Zimmer, you will like this cd. She did a really wonderful job. I wish I knew more about the composer.
This is my favorite CD.......2001-11-04
I purchased this CD to find a music selection for my daughter's skating routine. I had previously purchased "Cider House Rules" soundtrack and thoroughly enjoyed it, so we purchased this after listening to the samples on Amazon.com. This soundtrack has to be the best one I have heard! I watched the movie after I had listened to the CD, and I must say that Rachel Portman's music brings the movie to a whole new emotional level. I, too, wonder why this was not nominated for an Oscar. Rachel Portman has that special gift to communicate through her music. I look forward to purchasing more of her works.

Do not pass go, go directly to the Grammy awards. This is one of the most emotionally gripping, deeply satisfying vocal recitals in a month of Sundays. Jimmy Scott's roots in classic jazz and R&B give him a lifetime of experience to call upon, and now with Mood Indigo, producer Todd Barkan has placed Little Jimmy in the type of context his talent deserves. Barkan has surrounded the vocalist with a prime selection of mature modern jazzmen, self-assured in their own mastery and dedicated to the goal of creating an open, swinging canvas on which Scott can portray his genius for storytelling and emotional inflection. On "Imagination," Scott evokes a chilling sense of longing and resignation, as saxophone legend Hank Crawford and harmonica player Grégorie Maret offer spare, impeccably crafted solo ripostes, which only deepen the impact of Scott's fragile, lived-in instrument. Even more engrossing is Scott's convocation with pianist Cyrus Chestnut, bassist George Mraz, and drummer Grady Tate on the title tune, one of the most harrowing readings of the standard on record. Each tune is a little gem, bejeweled with elegant details only master jazzmen can provide, as with Joe Beck's sinuous alto guitar on "Without a Song." Scott's ability to immerse listeners in the emotional subtext of a song, with nothing more than that eggshell falsetto, broad vibrato, and halting phrasing, is miraculous. He is the closest thing extant to the Billie Holiday of Lady in Satin, and that's saying a mouthful. --Chip Stern
Customer Reviews:
WOW!!.......2007-03-08
I am a Jimmy Scott fan and I find this to be one of his best. His voice and the production are excellent. This is a must for any Jimmy Scott or jazz aficionado.
Little Jimmy Scott.......2006-05-01
I decided to write a recommendation because I think you'll find Little Jimmy Scott to fit every mood. I'm in college as a struggling junior and began to get very stressed with finals...and I was watching the Cosby Show and Bill was listening to "An Evening in Paradise" and I fell in love with the brief clip of Little Jimmy Scott and looked the album and song up on amazon and well, my stressful thoughts evaporated and suddenly the only important things were the simple things again. I wanted to encourage people to listen to any of Little Jimmy Scott's albums to find comforting and uplifting music for any part of your day.
What a guy!.......2001-01-01
I would never have imagined that Jimmy Scott could have bettered the performances he gave on his last album "Holding Back the Years," but he's done exactly that. I thoroughly enjoyed the previous album, but I think what may have moved Jimmy to surpass it are the very fine jazz instrumentalists that he's singing with. This is an album that you want to put on, and then lie down on the couch and really listen too. This is a very satisfying jazz performance, and considering Jimmy's age it is an even greater accomplishment. If you like Jimmy Scott, you'll surely be very pleased with "Mood Indigo," and if you're not familiar with his work this album is a very special introduction.
A wonderful record!.......2000-08-20
Well, I'm really not sure what to write, i just remembered that it's possible to review stuff on Amazon so I felt like sharing some of my thoughts on this album with you...I've not been listening to jazz records for a long time, so far I only own three of them. My first jazz record was a Louis Armstrong, then another Armstrong and then one with Jimmy Scott. I had seen him in some jazz documentary, there many people talked about how great he was and so on but from the short clips they played with him singing I couldn't really tell wheter I agreed or not. Well, now I know! :o) He's gotta be the best jazz vocalist ever, nature's given him a great voice but it's really in the way he uses it! This is best shown in "Mood indigo" where he starts singing a bit too slow and then his voice slowly - without letting us notice the change - starts swinging! Well, that's about it... ;o)
Great Scott.......2000-08-13
Live or on a cd, Jimmy Scott is absolutely fabulous.

Album Description
Viveza, one of the world's favourite salon groups does it again! With "Encore" this Canadian quintet brings alive salon music from Europe and South America with a freshness and vivacity that you have to hear to believe.
Salon music flourished in the 1920's and 30's, especially in the grand hotels. The repertoire of each ensemble was as varied as the patrons who frequented these fabled "palm courts." In an evening at the Ritz one was likely to hear music from Dvorak to Ravel, Lehar to Brahms or gypsy folksongs.
As you will discover with Viveza's Encore, the salon repertoire offers a cornucopia of tasty delights for your listening pleasure.
Customer Reviews:
A "Sequel" that Surpasses the Original.......2006-08-26
This album tops the previous "Viveza, Music in the Palm Court Style". The groups' inventiveness really shines in this CD. From a marimba version of Piazzola's "Milonga del Angel" to an absolutely smashing version of Moritat (Mack the Knife from Threepenny Opera), the selections are superb. I highly recommend this one!
Just Right for Internet Work.......2000-03-21
We have entertained ourselves with the video Jeeves and Wooster for the past two years. Since my wife and I played in classical orchestras, we greatly enjoy the quality and "just right" musical pace of the CD for office internet work stimulation. Now we ordered another copy for home entertainment.

What ??.......2006-12-10
The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!
Nice Voice, but not a nice person...(read on, pls.).......2006-01-07
Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!
A let down.......2004-09-24
I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.
The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19
This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

Customer Reviews:
BUY THIS CD NOW!.......2004-12-13
This album is excellent! Three tubas and a euphonium. I especially love it for the beautiful Christmas half, tracks 18 thru 35. (It's not a new album, it's just the same album wrongly listed here as out of stock, under the title "Mighty Tubadours" [without the "The"] and a different ASIN.
