Amazon.com essential recording

This is a considerably expanded version of the soundtrack album to Vincente Minnelli's Oscar-winning film. With two discs and 100 minutes of music (much of which is presented for the first time), these original session masters are highlighted by the MGM Studio Orchestra, Oscar Levant, Benny Carter, and Gene Kelly, all of whom perform such memorable Gershwin tunes as "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Love Is Here to Stay," and "S'Wonderful." Just about all of the material has a monotonously mono sound, but Levant's version of "Concerto in F" is included here for the first time in true stereo. Along with several Levant improvisational piano solos based on Gershwin's music, there are also some outtakes as well as extensive production and historical notes. --Joseph Lanza

5 out of 5 stars Magic of love.......2007-03-10

Nothing but Gene and George: the hard work and the happiness in music, conducting by the magician Vince.
Noone is better, noone could do better.
American masterpiece with european feelings.

5 out of 5 stars Filled with musical gems.......2004-02-17

This comprehensive edition is a must have for fans of the movie and of the Gershwins. The outtakes, contrary to the first review above, are excellent. Gene Kelly offers a wonderful vocal of "I've Got a Crush on You" and his short riff on "'S Wonderful" is almost like an acoustic version, much different than the over-the-top duet in the movie. And the Oscar Levant piano pieces are as close to George sitting down at the keys as we're going to get.

4 out of 5 stars TOO LONG !!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-06-17

I would not suggest buying this version of this sondtrack!!! The underscores and the extra tracks that are not featured in the film are not neccesary. Rhino records puts the extras out to jack up the price of the CD (making one LP into 2 CDs).
I would buy the ORIGINAL CAST SOUNDTRACK released by MGM records. You will enjoy this version ever so much more without all the extras!!!

5 out of 5 stars GERSHWIN'S TALENT.......2001-08-12

Many agree that the talented George Gershwin is a fabulous pianist, and alongside Ira, he helped to create some of the most beloved music ever. After viewing the movie that was filled with song and dance, I was pleased to discover that the soundtrack was readily available. The plot of An American in Paris mainly focuses on the lives of three friends and their dreams in addition to the romance that they encounter in the most popular European city. Gene Kelley is a struggling artist who soon falls in love, and the many songs in this cd express his emotions. Who wouldn't want to dance to Gershwin's spectacular tunes such as "Embraceable You?" These original songs included in this two cd set are well worth the price. Furthermore, "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise" is a true favorite with unique lyrics. Don't miss out on this must have cd collection.

5 out of 5 stars Ga Ga for Gershwin.......2000-12-13

Nearly every popular Gershwin tune is represented here, either as an instrumental, a vocal, or a production number. I am not a big fan of the film, but the soundtrack is fabulous. There are some stereo tracks here, too. Yet another triumph in the Turner/Rhino soundtrack collection of MGM films. As a sidenote I would like to thank Rhino for their extremely co-operative staff. When I bought this CD I opened up the very extensive booklet and was disappointed to find that due to an error on the assembly line I had received an insert that had some pages repeated and others deleted. I contacted Rhino and they sent me a new booklet which arrived within a week! That's what I call excellent customer service. The really neat thing is the fact that I have both booklets. The flubbed copy is sort of a collector's item to me.

I was pretty much into blues when I found a old copy of this and it opened the door of jazz to me. It is basically a jam session featuring some of the jazz greats of their time. They all happened to be in one at the same time and got together for a jam, evident in the track list. Thankfully someone recorded it. The music was the first jazz that I listened to that was so upfront with the feeling and passion that is so evident in blues

      5 out of 5 stars Luxurious..........2006-12-05

I have been an avid fan of all kinds of jazz piano since I was a kid. I am interested in just about everything; from Scott Joplin to Cecil Taylor and beyond. However, not much can really compete with the incredible rush you get from a truly inspired Meade Lux Lewis performance. The rock solid sledgehammer left hand, the quirky lines and riffs in the right hand, the masterful drive and swagger - you need both a mental and physical check-up if this music does not move you in some way.
This great cd is full of gems, from the wonderful v-disc recordings to the private live recordings from the late 40s. Personally, I like the introductions to some of the songs, they add to the mood somehow, and give an interesting picture of how the music was presented on the radio or in films. The ultra-strange cartoon soundtrack would be considered avant-garde if it were to be recorded today.
I usually enjoy this disc in one long sitting. It's worth it, indeed. In my opinion, boogie woogie piano - when played by a true expert like Lewis - is just as hip as the day it was created. If you take the time to listen beyond the sheer groove, you will discover nuances and layers infinitely.
This cd is a great document of one of the enduring giants of 20th century jazz piano.

      5 out of 5 stars best of it's type-boogie woogie.......2001-02-20

I Thought " The Blues Piano Artistry of Meade Lux Lewis" was one of my all time favorites, but this has much more including some great clips Lewis played for cartoons in the 40's, also the sound is beautifully cleaned up, about 26 cuts of pure music, some of the intros are a little bothersome, but can be avoided by programing your CD player. Except for the missing celeste cuts on the Blues Piano Artistry album, this has it in spades, including multiple versions of the same cut showing Lewis's skills, which equals Ammons and Johnson if not surpassing them.

What can be said by Bunk that hasn't already been said? A controversial figure of the south, who's technical playing was often pushed to the forefront over his pure love for music. Though this disc contains some rareties, I only suggest it for the true completist. I strongly recommend getting "...and his superior jazz band" before this if you do not already own it. "Panama" is the true mark of Bunk and his legacy.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not the greatest Bunk.......2001-04-01

These are important recordings - after a series of releases on obscure enthusiasts labels, these 1945 recordings were the first (and only) time that major record companies (RCA and Decca) showed an interest in Bunk Johnson. They were widely distributed and therefore highly influential in the New Orleans revival.

Bunk is in strong form throughout, playing a consistently firm lead and demonstrating his great talent for melodic variation. Jim Robinson is also in superb form.

However, these recordings are inferior to the 1944-45 American Music sides for three reasons. First, the unneccessary inclusion of a pianist, who clogs up a superb rhyths section. Second, the deliberate muffling of Baby Dodds drums, rendering him almost totally inaudible on the RCA sides. Third, the fact that George Lewis had just undergone major dental work before the RCA sides and was in nothing like top form.

The 1944-45 American Music sides are inconsistent and need to be approached with care. However, their sound quality has been greatly improved on their CD release, and the finest of them are amongst the best New Orleans ensemble recordings of the entire New Orleans revival.

The recordings on this CD are important, but they do not do full justice to the Bunk Johnson, Jim Robinson, George Lewis, Laurence Marrero, Slow Drag Pavageau, Baby Dodds band. For that, the American Music sides are the ones to get.

5 out of 5 stars Fun dixieland set by Bunk & The Gang..........2000-09-28

This excellent CD has all of Bunk Johnson's recordings for Decca & Victor plus a couple of V-Discs and eight alternate takes, three were previously unissued. Bunk is heard in prime form throughout, and his band featuing clarinetist George Lewis, trombonist Jim Robinson, pianist Alton Purnell, banjo player Lawrence Marrero, bass player Alcide "Slow Drag" Pavageau and drummer man Baby Dodds is for the most part in tune and a hard swingin' group. Johnson and Lewis never sounded so wonderful together, and not like some of the earlier American Music performances, the sound quality here is quite excellent despite a faulty piano. For the two V-Discs (versions of "I Can't Escape From You" and "Snag It" that exceed five minutes), Bunk's band (with Red Jones on drums) is heard live from the Stuyvesant Casino. Some of the highlights of the high-quality New Orleans Dixieland set, which was put out by Document in 1996 (much of the music had formerly been on an Arhoolie LP), are hot & spirited versions of "Maryland, My Maryland," an uptempo "A Closer Walk With Thee," "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "Darktown Strutters Ball." Recomended.

5 out of 5 stars A perfectly done CD issue of rare blues & vaudeville!.......2003-09-08

What a treat this is! These are alternate takes that are extremely rare and available nowhere else. You get to hear Don Redman, Tommy Ladiner, Jimmy O'Bryant, Miff Mole, Charlie Green, Jelly Roll Morton & a variety of other jazz names backing up great vaudevillian blues singers like Lucille Hegamin in glorious unremastered(thank God) 78 sound! This is sure to put a great big smile on any collector's face, great liner notes too. Essential stuff worth adding to your collection.

There's a couple of things I wish someone had told me before I paid 16 bucks plus shipping for this CD: 1. The disk is subtitled "The Alternate Takes". So these are versions that were never released, sometimes for good reason. The liner notes are kind enough to compare these versions to the ones released, pointing out the probable reasons for their being rejected. But they don't tell you where the released takes are available. 2. The sound is particularly bad. As one who collects early recordings (including on 78 rpm) I accept some degree of hissing and scratching, but some of these cuts are, even for me, unlistenable. I would think someone would have to be a scholar or a deranged blues fanatic to buy this CD at full price. But if you MUST have these sides to complete your Lucille Hegamin collection, spend away! Accompanying musicians include Tommy Ladnier, Jimmy O'Bryant, Don Redman, Miff Mole, Charlie Green and Jelly Roll Morton. Great, when you can hear them!
