Expert musicianship, a diverse repertoire, and an active sense of humor become an explosive mixture in the hands of the Airmen. Recorded during a 1976 tour of England, Live One shows the genre-twisting band in all its maniacal glory. Western swing standards, rockabilly romps, R&B chestnuts, and a rash of truck-driving songs all find their way into the potent blend, not to mention their offbeat, drug-addled originals. Bill Kirchen's nifty guitar work, Andy Stein's punchy fiddle, and Bobby Black's pedal-steel forays provide the meat: no matter how goofy it gets, their formidable musical chops keep it all together. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars The Commander Rocks.......2007-03-14

The Commander never came out to Australia (that I know of anyway) so I didn't see him and his Airmen but listening to his live albums got me part way there. I bought all his albums up until the first, settled band broke up; I think there were about 6 or so albums. The best two were the Armadillo live one and this one. When first released on vinyl, this "Live One Here" got fairly ordinary reviews amongst the critics who much preferred the Armadillo album. For my money, the Armadillo was only slightly superior which means they are both great live albums from the rockinest, swinginest, stonedest, weirdest country-rock band of all time. Billy C, The Commander, Andy Stein, Bobby Black, Bill Kirchin; all fantastic musicians. Their choice of cover material was fantastic and in the Commander, Bill Kirchin, Kevin Blackie Farrell (friend but not band member), Billy C and John Tichy, they had some mighty fine songwriters. If you survived the 70's, loved beer, girls and reefer, loved to rock out and loved your music dirty, sweaty and with a sense of humour, then you'll love this album.

5 out of 5 stars BEST LIVE COMMANDER ALBUM.......2005-12-29

THIS IS A GREAT LIVE ALBUM. A MUST HAVE FOR ANY COMMANDER CODY FAN. AWESOME VERSIONS OF BIG MAMOU AND MAMA HATED DIESELS (BETTER THAN THE STUDIO VERSION)

5 out of 5 stars IT DOSEN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!.......2005-06-20

I have bought many of the Commander's recordings over the years and finally had to break down and re-purchase this CD. My vinyl album was destroyed and I lost the cassettes that I had recorded over the years, so I had to have this CD. I just recently saw the commander and his new Airmen this past fall in Hartford and he's still rocking as ever. This album though is the commander at his best and in his prime with the best group of Airmen ever.
This is one of the best live albums that I have ever heard. Commander Cody is much more that just that guy who recorded Hot Rod Lincoln, he is a gem of a classic s--t kickin rocker.

5 out of 5 stars Never to Old.......2004-11-19

I first listen to this music when I was about 15 on a little ranch in Wyoming, and I'm still loving it. This album made me the hippie cowboy I am today. Still listenin to it in Wyoming 25 years later.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite LPA alblum.......2004-10-17

I have seen the Commander with and without the Lost Planet Airmen over many years... I own most of the titles listed here in Amazon, but this is by far the most bang for the buck. I have introduced many friends to the Commander by gifting this CD. After more than 25 years of listening to the band ... this is one of my all time favorite alblums in my music collection. This CD captures the band at the zenith of it's artistic arc. For a group that has a reputation for great live performances, this is the place to start.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME! .......2006-08-07

I've been listening to Pat for about 20 years now.....I'm 40 so thats half of my life....... I've seen him in several concerts and also had the pleasure of meeting him in NY at J&R Music World where I got his Autograph! I wish that I weren't nervous because I would have hugged him..... I did shake his though.

He's the only musician that I can say I LOVE. His music reaches my soul like no other.....period.

5 out of 5 stars Metheny delves into Acid Jazz!.......2006-05-10

This CD has to be the most satisfying of all his releases. Not only does he satisfy the Metheny fan, he makes new fans out of those who enjoy hip grooves. Take your pick on this CD. Title track, To the End of the World, Red Sky, The Girls Next Door; Metheny and his band gives the right touch to this release. One of my favorite CD's!

Recorded live at the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia, this double CD is one heck of an extensive tribute to Stephen Sondheim. Backed only by Paul Ford on piano, Mandy Patinkin gets through nearly three dozen songs penned by the Broadway master. Some are obvious (excerpts from Sunday in the Park with George, in which the singer created the title role), others less so ("If You Can Find Me I'm Here" from Evening Primrose). Patinkin is often mocked for his shivering falsetto, but here, it's actually when his voice explores a lower register that it falters. What's more interesting is when he tackles songs usually sung by women, such as Follies' "Broadway Baby" and Company's "Another Hundred People" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy"--the latter hammed up so much that you can hear the chewing of the scenery. A distinctively mannered interpreter, Patinkin remains an acquired taste, but fans of his will be in heaven with this set. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

    5 out of 5 stars Patinkin Live.......2007-07-19

I am a huge Mandy Patinkin fan, and this is, without a doubt, one of the best CDs in my collection. The transitions between songs are excellent and seamless, plus the song selection was top-notch.

    5 out of 5 stars Sondheim recital.......2007-01-22

Probably the best way to approach these disks is to treat them like a recital in a concert hall. Rather as you would listen to a Schubert or Schumann song cycle. Taken together this way, we come to hear Sondheim as one of our finest composers, serious, comic, manic, depressive, always dead on target no matter what the subject matter. And Patinkin is perfect for these songs; he understands the meaning and value of every note and every word, just as a fine concert singer would do, and he makes his listeners understand, too. One of the most intriguing concept albums in recent memory, and a joy all the way through. Bob Finley, Palm Springs, CA.

2 out of 5 stars Also a very dissapointed fan.......2003-08-22

I too LOVE Mandy and Stephen Sondheim and own just about everything both has ever made! I also have been to 6 of Mandy's live performances. This was truly a big dissapointment to me. Every concert I have seen Mandy in has been filled with emotion and his personality just grabs hold of you for an evening of wonderful escape-ism. This to me was very un-entertaining and I actually became irritated after awhile of listening to it. It seemed to drone on with out the wonderful feelings and emotions and soaring voice that Mandy typically puts into his music. I gave this as a gift too (since my friend and I had missed Mandy at his Sondheim review in DC last year) and felt badly that I had. There are so many other great recordings of Mandy...Kidults, Saturday in the Park with George, The Secret Garden, Mandy sings Rogers & Hammerstien and Sondheim. This one has just sat on my shelf after I played it through twice hoping to warm up to it...while my other recordings are very worn out with years of playing!

2 out of 5 stars Adequate performance; poor entertainment.......2003-05-04

I received this disc the same day a "Philip Quast Live at the Donmar". The Quast disc has its own flaws (and I dont wish to compare the two performers) but it has been strung together in a more thoughtful manner, with witty imagination and using a more dangerous in the choice of songs, which is really where this disc fails. The songs here are generally enjoyable though rather standard, and the lack of cohesion (running the songs together doesnt count) means I just dip into the discs listening to a few favourites, rather than enjoying the whole show.

    2 out of 5 stars a very disappointed fan.......2003-02-05

I have every recording Patinkin appears on, even if he's only on one track; I adore his voice, his flair, his emotion, his ability to deliver a song.

But (much of) this recording is disappointing, mainly because Mr. Patinkin's voice in the lower range sounds muddled and forced, as though he's lost ability to control it (however, the more falsetto sounds are as clear and sharp as ever).

And I don't care for the format of this performance. Live recordings should have live audience reactions: one (often unrelated) song after another without applause had me wondering when--if ever--was the audience was going to be allowed to react.

Also, while I've never had the privilege of attending a Patinkin concert, I imagined that--above all-- he would be passionate. Perhaps he was. But what (mostly) comes across on the CD is a somber--almost technical--performance.

I hope he's healthy, that mixed quality of singing on this recording was just a fluke, and that his next CD will be a Five-star as all his previous ones have been

5 out of 5 stars Painless and Pleasant.......2000-08-19

It's not that I hate opera, it's rather that I cannot handle and entire opera without nodding off. This 4 disc CD provides highlights from the most famous and recognizable arias, i.e., Pagliacci, Carmen, Rigoletto, Madame Butterfly, La Boheme, The Mikado, and H.M.S. Pinafore -- just to mention a few. I appreciate the ability to enjoy select arias from some of the most beautiful and and exceptional operas in the world, and played by first class orchestras, without having to sit through the entire opera.

This 1994 recording marks one of the closest collaborations of guitarist Pat Metheny and keyboardist Lyle Mays, with every composition co-composed by the two except Mays's "Episode d'Azur." It's a varied, engaging tapestry. Metheny's ever-shifting guitar sounds percolate and soar over the smooth backgrounds of Mays's piano and synthesized orchestrations, occasional background vocals by David Blamires and Mark Ledford, and a strong foundation provided by bassist Steve Rodby. The title song builds over a wall of rapid, insistent percussion from Paul Wertico and Luis Conte, while there's a brooding, luminous sweep that seethes, then explodes, in the 12-minute "To the End of the World." But it's Metheny's inventive guitar work that distinguishes this music, including the long, lyrical lines of the very pretty "And Then I Knew," the tunefully subdued funk of "The Girls Next Door," and the soaring, bubbling excitement of "Episode." --Adam Rains

5 out of 5 stars We Live Here.......2007-07-07

I'd say this is Pat Metheny Group's most accessible album to date. That's my opinion anyway and I have all the others. It's certainly their funkiest and as close to the edge of smooth jazz as the group is ever likely to get. There are even beautiful but easy vocal hooks to sing or hum along to (performed by David Blamires and Mark Ledford) on a couple of the songs. Metheny plays guitar (and guitar synth, of course), with Lyle Mays on piano and keyboards, Steve Rodby on acoustic and electric bass, Paul Wertico on drums and Luis Conte on percussion. (Ledford also plays trumpet).

I would like to hope that this album, when it was released back in 1995, brought new fans into the fold without scaring away any established ones. Personally, I loved it from first listen. I'm not not overly keen on the title track (though I do appreciate its brilliant artistry) but the rest of the album is typically flawless. Favourite tunes include the opener "Here To Stay", "The Girls Next Door", "Episode d'Azur", "Something To Remind You" and "Red Sky". I find Mays' piano solos on some of the selections are particularly heartwarming and if I were going to introduce PMG to a friend, this is the CD I would buy for them as a gift.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz that grows on you.......2007-05-03

Initially i thought there was something questionable about this album...maybe too smooth or something. Possibly the seamlessly smooth integration of Metheny's synth quitar with Lyle's great piano and the excellent vocal support..Blaimes et al. Eventually i was hooked...great compositions, and once you recognize the synth for what it is,well only PMG could make something sound so very melodic. This is solid jazz.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2006-12-04

As a HUGE Pat Metheny Group fan, I own about 8 of his CDs and listen to them regularly. "We Live Here" is one my favorites...along with "Still Life Talking" "Letter from Home" "Secret Story" and "Speaking of Now".

The group's membership has changed composition over the years, with Pat Metheny (of course) and Lyle Mays the only two core players that have been on every PMG album since their self-titled release in 1978. Others have come and gone, with some mostly staying (such as drummer Paul Wertico and bassist Steve Rodby). On this album, we've got those four plus David Blamires (vocals, brass, guitars, and misc others), Mark Ledford (brass, vocals, whistling, mallets, guitars, and misc others), and Luis Conte (percussion). With 7 guys, it's the largest of the various iterations of the PMG and in contrast to the PMG of early days when it was simply a quartet, these additional members allow the group to achieve sonic textures that simply couldn't be achieved with fewer players...particularly with the multi-talented Ledford and Blamires adding so many little nuances like marimba, flugelhorn, and rhythm guitars. Their voices blend quite nicely as well, contributing that signature "oo ah ee" stuff to Pat's signature guitar work. It's just one of the many things I like about this album.

The group also adds some things not heard on other albums such as strategically placed sound effects (thunder and rain, along with an approaching subway train and an electric motor) which again add some interesting texture and complements the music nicely. It never feels forced or results in a sound that is over-produced and unachievable outside the confines of a studio...as can be witnessed by getting a copy of the DVD by the same title...the group flawlessly replicates on stage what is heard on the album.

I particulaly like "Red Sky" and "To The End of the World" (my favorite), but every track is good...with none meriting the "skip" button. It is a fantastic album when you just want to unwind after a hard day...with a glass of wine and the fire crackling. I also like to take this album on road trips. There's nothing quite like winding through the curves of the Pacific Coast surrounded by this music, creation, and a powerful car.

While a lot of people within my circle of friends are unfamiliar with Metheny, when I put on one of his albums they invariably say, "this is GREAT music...who is that?" (including my 70-year old mother). The music appeals to such a wide range of ages and tastes because in so many ways it defies categorization. It's jazz, but without falling into the cheezy "smooth jazz" genre and yet not falling into the traditional jazz category either. The PMG is a group that has really defined its own sound and carved out a unique niche in the world of jazz.

And it's a niche that I love. I think what I like best about the PMG in general, aside from the beauty of the music and the obvious talent of the musicians (these are guys who take their craft extremely seriously), is that it's just plain interesting music...never boring. I also like the fact that the group departs occassionally from the 4/4 rut and ventures out into some unusual time signatures, always navigating them effortlessly and grooving them fluently, led by Paul Wertico's amazing abilities...particularly his cymbal work.

I can highly recommend this album to PMG lovers and newbies alike. You won't be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars a great cd.......2006-05-26

don't listen to people whos say its musically shallow or too accesssible. the solo's are great...honestly, the cd probably contains some of metheny's very best recorded solos, specifically, red sky and to the end of the world. and for people complaining about the drum loops...that was the whole point of the album!..it was to see how the groups music measures up against modern rhythms.

    5 out of 5 stars Never overrated.......2006-04-20

This record may be an upset for purists. Well, this can be no jazz, can be no contemporary, can be what Metheny is not accustomed to do. But, who cares? The disc is fantastic, whetever the optics you have. Don't forget this has a Grammy award (something Pat has in more than a dozen).

I can say I have been late to Pat Metheny. I have listened to Yellowjackets and Weather Report with both joy and interest and I have made an idea of what fusion or contemporary jazz was. Some other groups are more predictable, like Fourplay and Rippingtons, but they still got the punch. They move into latin jazz, adult and even funky, so the "label" is not clear.

Describing this disc is not simple. The quality is exceptional, the rhythm is catchy and some songs deserve a lot of hearings to discover all that is behind. Some could say it has an abuse of programations and canned melodies but still you can hear the best Pat's guitar and Lyle's keyboards.

"Girls next door" has not only rhythm, melody and virtuosism. It has such a delicious bizarre mood that makes it an irresistible song.

"To the end of the world" is incredible and hypnotizing. You don't want the 12 minutes to reach to an end.

"Here to Stay", is a rich melody that introduces de disc. It is the sort of thing you are going to discover further.

The overall disc sounds really modern and accessible for new public. I repeat that this is not a good thing for purists. Remember that when you are trying to discover a new artist you need to understand his proposals and then you can go further.

Accesibility doesn't mean low quality. Metheny has got a lot of recordings, better or worse (well, it is difficult to find a bad recording from him). But if you want to know about him, I strongly recommend to start with this "We Live Here". You won't regret.

Afterwards, you will be loving it for a lifetime.

      1 out of 5 stars Not what I remember.......2006-06-27

My mother had Johnny Rivers Live at the Whiskey A Go Go on album back in the mid sixties. It was completely different than what is offered here. I distinctly remember several songs that aren't on this collection. He did his own version of Suzy-Q. Also had Stop in the name of love, and Land of 1000 dances. If I thought about it long enough I'm sure I could think of others that aren't there as well. I was only 12 or 13 back then. I loved that album and wore it out completely. So where did these songs go? This being a two album set that's currently offered I have no way of knowing which songs are supposedly from which album? But I do know that this isn't right. I really wanted to buy that album again but this is so completely different and wrong!

4 out of 5 stars More is Not Always Better.......2003-10-06

My roommate and I had purchased Johnny Rivers' Whiskey A-Go-Go- on a record album long ago, so when I saw that plus his Here We A-Go-Go Again on a CD I bought it for her birthday. Both of us found we liked the first set of tracks better than the second, including Walkin' the Dog, Brown-Eyed Handsome Man and It Wouldn't Happen With Me. We found the tempo on the Whisky A-Go-Go was faster than on the Here We A-Go-Go. It still has the Rivers' sound and plenty of tracks to do some foot-stompin' to, just so long as you don't need to worry about turning the sound down.

4 out of 5 stars Small Venue with a Tight Band and a Big Sound.......2002-06-13

I first heard the latter of this compilation (Here We A-Go-Go Again)at a friends place back in 1969. His mom had the record and everytime I'd visit, she would let me blare the stereo as long as I'd have Johnny Rivers playing. Some years later I bought both albums for my own and still listen to them today although "Here We A-Go-GO Again" gets the nod. Johnnys crisp guitar and harmonica playing along with Jerry Rubins drums and Joe Osbournes bass gave this trio a great sound.
Great songs like Chuck Berrys "Maybelline" and Roger Millers "Dang Me" were spun out on Johnnys southern style of Rockabilly Blues. "High Heal Sneakers" has a great bottom line rhythym with Johnnys almost inert vocal style. The album is mostly all cover tunes but I really appreciated the way Rivers kept the tempo for the audience who on more than one occasion included themselves in on the show. It's a real simple concept with a small venue armed with talented musicians playing to a very receptive crowd. I still play these songs and although not a considered a classic by any means, it still remains one of my favorites.
