5 out of 5 stars Just the best.......2007-07-03

If you were a Steve Goodman fan -- or if you've never heard of him but love the raw beauty and honesty of this musical genre -- this is a must-have. With warm reminiscenses of friends like John Prine and Arlo Guthrie and the powerful singing of so many greats, this recording of a tribute concert is a treasure. Makes you sad that this artist died so young... some fine music we will never hear.

5 out of 5 stars Tribute To Steve Goodman.......2005-07-19

I have owned this album for many years on vinyl, but have enjoyed the music and musicans so much that I decided to up-date to CD. It is a classic!

4 out of 5 stars I Can't Sleep.......2004-05-18

Steve Goodman was a special performer and songwriter. His unassuming manner, sterling musicianship, sense of humor and exquisite songwriting made him a standout both in concert and in the studio. This concert is a fine tribute from artists who loved him. From his bosom buddy John Prine comes John's "Souvenirs," Steve's great "My Old Man," and a marvelous teaming with Bonnie Raitt on John's "Angel From Montgomery." Ed Holstein who was one of Steve's good friends does "Blues That Steve Taught Me" that's hilarious. One of my favorite Chicago singers is Bonnie Koloc who does a great bluesy rendition of Steve's "I Can't Sleep" with her crystal clear voice gracing each note. Other notables are John Hartford doing his "Gentle On My Mind" and Arlo Guthrie on "All Over the World" and his great hit that Steve wrote, "City of New Orleans" with its sunny "Good morning, America, how are you?" chorus. The number of musicians here like Richie Havens, David Bromberg, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and the exquisite Jethro Burns attests to the high regard so many had for Steve. This is a great little walk down memory lane from one of our music's dearest hearts, Steve Goodman. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great Ol' Stuff.......2000-07-18

Steve Bromberg's cut ("...Fool") is the greatest. I, too, wore out a 33 of this. Now the CD.

5 out of 5 stars there was never a more class act than steve goodman.......1999-10-14

I played the old 33 until I wore it out. so many artists come together to make this catalogue complete. John Prine's liner notes say it all!

Product Description

Red Pajamas Records proudly released My Old Man: A Tribute to Steve Goodman in Spring of 2006. This compilation features an array of Goodman's most enduring songs translated by up-and-coming artists. This album is a true representation of Goodman's continued influence on new artists, proving his gift of delivering deep concepts with a tongue-in-cheek style of songwriting will continue through out the 21st Century. Twenty years after Goodman's death, his influence transcends time. Rosanna Goodman, with the help of her friends and extremely talent peers, conceptualized this release. The goal was to embrace her father's musical legacy and introduce his genius to a new generation. Rosanna had this to say about My Old Man: "I believe I've accomplished my mission: to express that a great song and spirit will always stand the test of time. My old man would've wanted it this way."

4 out of 5 stars Keg of Dynamite.......2007-03-18

Jeepers creepers! When I first put this CD in the changer, I didn't much enjoy it. I kept comparing everything to Steve Goodman. He was such a magical performer. I saw him live twice, once at the Earl of Oldtown in Chicago and once at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. Both times I got to talk to him; and he was always upbeat and personable. On his recordings, there is a joy and warmth in his voice that didn't come across on most of these versions on first blush. Now, after listening a couple times, I'm coming to have a much greater appreciation for this second tribute disc that follows 1989's "A Tribute to Steve Goodman."

The track that made me pop for the price was Ana Egge's "Old Fashioned." She's such a stunning recording artist in her own right and adds her wistful vocals to this sentimental diamond. Having Kate Fenner do vocals on "The Ballad of Penny Evans" adds to this stark song. It was always amazing to hear Steve -- obviously a guy -- sing, "My name is Penny Evans." The song suits Fenner's range more than Chris Brown's, but is quite moving. Luther Wright & the Wrongs do a nice job of picking on the instrumental "Jessie's Jig," which was the title of one my favorite Goodman LPs! On first blush, Matt Keating & Emily Spray's "Danger" seems homespun and pedestrian. But this is one of the tracks that have really grown on me the more I listen. Their harmony highlights what a lovely melody Steve penned, "Sittin' on a keg of dynamite every night." Similarly, Chris Brown's "Yellow Coat" just made me want to play Steve's record when I first heard it. But it has also grown on me, highlighting the haunting melody of reminiscence and regret. Tony Scherr's "Just Lucky I Guess" with just his bass as background is stark and simple that places the song & melody front & center. Kate Fenner outlines the "sad state of casual affairs" with her take of "I Just Keep Falling in Love." It is a delightful sentimental weeper where she falls for a lover who "wants to be free to feel nothing at all." One big departure is the track from Steve's "Affordable Art" set, "Watching Joey Glow." The electric guitars make what was a humorous track in Steve's hands seem an ominous result of a nuclear accident in that hands of Teddy Kempel.

Okay, so now I like this set! It pays to put your discs in the changer a few times! :) Steve Goodman was a unique songwriter & performer, who will never be replaced. This set serves to keep that legend alive. Listen & then spin the original. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars Morning Commute.......2005-07-10

This is my very favorite morning commute music. It's upbeat, jazzy, memorable and just plain good. With the very first song, you're smiling, humming and bouncing in your seat...how can you not enjoy the drive to work when you're feeling like that?

4 out of 5 stars Really Good CD.......2003-08-15

Of the 14 tracks on this CD, seven are "merely" good, while six are very good and one is great. Every one of the tracks (except the last one (which has a slow tempo)) makes you start bouncing around in your chair and want to start dancing. A really good CD. Here are my individual track ratings:

    1. Sing, Sing, Sing, Pt. 1 -- 5 Stars
    2. Stompin' at the Savoy - Steve Wingfield -- 3 Stars
