Tommy Dunbar and Jon Rubin Formed the Rubinoos While Still in Junior High School. By Age Fourteen, after Playing a Few School Dances, They Graduated to the Club Circuit. In 1975 the Band was Signed as One of the Original Acts on the Newly Formed Beserkley Label. The Rubinoos Made their Recording Debut that Year with the Song Gorilla, on the Beserkley Chartbusters LP. Continuing the Trend of Bands Such as the Raspberries with their Engaging Blend of Innocent Bubblegum and Power Pop, their Cover of Tommy James' `i Think We're Alone Now' Made an Appearance in the Lower Reaches of the USA Charts which Gave the Label Its First Hit. With a Career Now Into Its 32nd Year, the Rubinoos Show No Sign of Losing their Inspiration and Continue to Deliver Perfect Power-pop Songs. Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About is a 3-disc Set Detailing the Bands Entire Career from '75 and Includes a Complete Previously Unreleased Concert Recorded at Hammersmith Odean in April 1978 Along with Rare Demos.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars These guys coulda been contenders..........2007-06-15

..and in a better world, the Rubinoos would've been stars. The proof's in this sparkling three-disc set. If you like guitar-driven melodic pop with soaring harmony vocals and some tongue-in-cheek humor thrown in for good measure, it doesn't get much better than this. The obvious influences are '60s-era Beach Boys and the Raspberries, but the Rubinoos' music stands on its own merits and is well worth discovering.

If you're already a Rubes' fan, the best reason to buy this set is the terrific remastering job. I offer in evidence "Rendezvous," an Andy Paley song originally recorded for--then left off of--the band's 1978 long-player BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD. I'd heard this song previously on their 1994 rarities collection GARAGE SALE, where it sounded like a 16-year-old outtake. Not any more. Now it leaps out of the speakers, sounding like the Beach Boys produced by Phil Spector, background vocals and castanets right in the room with you. Amazing. And pretty much every song sounds this good (who knew there was so much bass to be found in those old Beserkley tapes?) There might also be the odd track you haven't found elsewhere, like the Rubes' title song from the "Revenge Of The Nerds" soundtrack, or their cover of the Raspberries' "Cruisin' Music." The previously unreleased 1978 Hammersmith Odeon concert also included here is just icing on the cake.

So buy this box to either discover a wonderful, unjustly-neglected band, or to hear familiar songs sound better than they ever have before. You win either way.

5 out of 5 stars Power Pop Classics from the Rubinoos.......2007-04-20

Simply put the Rubinoos are one of the Greatest Power Pop Bands of all time! And while this really does NOT include "Everything " it does a great Job by featuring all of the Songs from their first Two LP's and a ton of tunes from the rest of their 30+ year Career! What really makes this a must have is the Super Live Show featured on disc three from 1978. Energy galore!

5 out of 5 stars EAR CANDY.......2007-04-06

The Rubinoos are a talented band who did not get the recognition they deserved. They rock with hooks and leave the listener wondering who are these "guys"....Buy it,enjoy it and spread the word about THE RUBINOOS".

5 out of 5 stars An Embarrassment of Riches.......2007-04-05

These guys were way too good in the '70s, and they're still way too good. A band has that managed to draw on roots and influences and still sound totally fresh, The Rubinoos are LONG overdue for this sort of collection. Buy it now, and once you've had the tremendously fun experience of listening to it (and that's one of the great things about this great band--their music is just so damn much fun to listen to), buy another copy for your best friend. He or she will thank you. And speaking of thanks, here's to the band for all the music in this set, a document that shows how great they were at the beginning and that proves they haven't lost a step.

5 out of 5 stars Power pop at it's finest..........2007-04-04

You should not buy this set if you don't like hooky songs, great harmonies and incredible guitars. You should not buy this set if you don't like The Beatles, The Beach Boys and The Raspberries. Even if you already own Rubinoos LPs or CDs, the incredible mastering, the recently discovered and freshly mixed 1978 live performance from The Hammersmith Odeon makes this purchase a no-brainer. You've been warned, don't play cute.

Cy Coleman and David Zippel's City of Angels is a seductive depiction of 1940s Los Angeles, capturing swinging jazz, torchy ballads, witty lyrics, and even a Manhattan Transfer-like Greek chorus (arranged by ManTran guru Yaron Gershovsky). James Naughton and Gregg Edelman star as Stone and Stine, respectively a tough Raymond Chandleresque PI and the writer who dreams up his adventures. Randy Graff plays Stone's long-suffering secretary and Dee Hoty the requisite femme fatale. Loads of atmosphere and tasty songs such as "What You Don't Know About Women," "With Every Breath I Take," "You're Nothing Without Me," and "You Can Always Count on Me" make City of Angels a modern classic. It won 1990 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Leading Actor (Naughton), Featured Actress (Graff), Best Book (Larry Gelbart), and Best Original Score. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Fun Show, Average Score.......2007-02-21

Fun show, ingenuos concept, so-so score, with one exception. The ballad With Every Breath I Take is brilliant. One of Coleman's best pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Cleverness personified.......2006-10-16

A duet between an author and the character he created, each claiming "you're nothing without me," is just one example of how sharp, witty and clever show is, with an unusual score, jazzy and bluesy and very 1940s, and some of the best lyrics I know.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Jazz Musical That's FUN!!!.......2006-04-14

City of Angels is an incredibly fun, classy, and jazzy musical that delivers. Stellar vocal performances are provided by the entire cast, particularly the female end. The fact that Randy Graff was the only female from this cast nominated at the Tony Awards that year floors me. Kay McClelland and Rachel York deserved nods for their powerful solos, With Every Breath I Take and Lost Found, alone. These two songs are also the type of sultry, jazz solos that one would expect in the 40's, which is why the show works. The music is completely period with when the show takes place, and that's why I love it. The best tracks are:

3) What You Don't Know About Women
6) With Every Breath I Take (destined to be a classic)
9) Lost and Found (wonderful solo)
10) All You Have To Do Is Wait (FUN! FUN! FUN SONG!!! Hilarious as well)
11) You're Nothing Without Me
13) You Can Always Count On Me (Randy Graff's Tony!)

4 out of 5 stars Great Jazz-Oriented Score.......2005-06-25

1990 Tony winner for Best Musical, "City Of Angels" contains a great score, filled with jazz-oriented melodies & torch songs. Not all the songs are terrific, but most of the score lends itself to repeat listenings. Best tracks include:

Double Talk
What You Don't Know About Women
With Every Breath I Take [beautiful song!]
Lost And Found
You're Nothing Without Me [the show's hit]
You Can Always Count On Me
Funny

Great cast ... great buy!

5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2005-02-22

This is one of my favorite soundtracks ever! Since I'm going to be working on music for the show, I'm happy that this is the case. It has been in my CD player for a few weeks now, and there's enough variety for it not to get old. But having read through the script makes the lyrics infinitely wittier. Musicals are supposed to rely partially on the lyrics and partially on the script. This show does that perfectly. Without the script, the lyrics are (apparently) lacking. But without the lyrics, the script is missing something. When you put the two pieces together, however, it's really easy to see why this show won a Tony.

Not exactly the most seamless adaptation ever attempted, this animated version of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic swashbuckler (now set in outer space, even if the "ships" appear inexplicably unchanged since the 18th century) at least benefited from Disney's always high production standards. Those factors also insure that James Newton Howard's orchestral score is serviceably effervescent and retro enough for the film's storytelling gambit--if still a long way from the heights of Korngold's triumphant, genre-defining music for The Sea Hawk and other Errol Flynn swashbucklers; call it Captain Blood-lite. The studio's marketing-driven desire to have it both ways has also awkwardly sandwiched in a couple otherwise pleasant John Rzeznik-penned modern rock tracks, "I'm Still Here," performed by the Goo Goo Dolls singer himself, and BBMak's slightly funkier take of "Always Know Where You Are." --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Score For A Great Movie.......2007-06-16

Definitely one of the--if not the--most underrated Disney movies ever. Of course, such an original concept got swept up in the intent to maximize the market-ability of the movie. Admittedly though, "Treasure Island" in space is hard to pull off, but this movie does, in part to the great score behind it. To balance a traditional 'swashbuckling' genre score with sci-fi twists can be no easy task, but its managed greatly in this soundtrack. A definite must for anyone who liked the movie and a great suggestion for anyone else.

4 out of 5 stars A review based on the samples. (No, I don't have the CD...yet.).......2007-06-04

I shall be rating this with stars, 5 stars being awesome and one star being lame.

1. I'm Still Here (John Rzeznik): 5 stars. I love this song!

2. Always Know Where You Are (BBMak): Um, ok, why did they put this song on the soundtrack again? 2 stars.

3. 12 Years Later: Kind of a quiet song, one I would listen to while writing. 4 stars.

4. To the Spaceport: Awesome! Kind of sounds like one of the songs from the movie "Dinosaur". (No surprise there, because James Newton Howard did the scores for both movies.) 4 stars

5. Rooftop: Wow. This song is beautiful, and it is most definately a song that I would listen to at night to lull me to sleep. 5 stars.

6. Billy Bones: Way to switch me from "lull me to sleep." to "creeping out!" 4 stars.

7. The Map: Yay for the Chronicles of Narnia people who put the first part of this song on their movie trailer! This song is DA BOMB! 5 stars.

8. Silver: Rock on all you Newfies out there! (A Newfie being slang for a Newfoundlander, or somebody that was born on Newfoundland.) This song goes out to you and smacks of the seas and the east coast. It totally fits Silver who must be either Newfie or part Newfie. (I'm sure he is, but don't bet on it.) 5 stars.

9. The Launch: Hmm. I'm not so keen on this song, but it's probably just me. 3 stars.

10.James Newton Howard really shines in one of his best musical pieces. Wow, I think this song sums up Silver and Jim's father/son pretty well. 5 stars.

11. Jim chases Morph: Meh on this song too. I love Morph though. He practically steals the movie. 3 stars.

12. Ben: Um, yeah. I don't really like this song too much. 2 stars.

13. Silver Bargains: And we are BACK TO AWESOMENESS! I love this song. It's rather bittersweet. 4 stars.

14. The Back Door: Ooh, this song has suspense weaved into it. Me likey! 4 stars.

15. The Portal: This song reminds me of in the movies when the main character tampers with something too deadly for them (like magic), and it ends up morphing them or attacking them. Sort of a "I messed up with something beyond my control, and now I'm paying for it." kind of tune. 4 stars.

16. Jim Saves the Crew: W00t! Mega freaky action music! And more of the same "Playing with fire" feelings that we got from The Portal. 5 stars.

17. Silver Leaves: Nice, soft, heart-touching music to finish up an excellent CD and movie. 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars I LOOOOOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!.......2007-03-15

I love this movie, first of all. some of my friends didn't like it, but oh well they have their opinions. this movie rocks!!!! i love the soundtrack. Especially "I'm still here." Now my little brother loves this movie, that makes 2. :-) i want this cd!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great songs.......2006-08-04

I loved the movie even though no one else seamed to like this movie like I did. Well after a few years... (ok a little more then a few) I broke down and tryed to find the cd to one of my favorite movies. And now its on its was here and im very happy. For the reviews I read that have not seen the movie I highly recomend seeing it. I think having a none love story film was a good idea. This deals more with becoming an adult and taking resposibility then getting the girl. I like this film and I like the music. Buy it you wont regrat it!

5 out of 5 stars Always Know Where You Are.......2006-07-11

All right, I'm not really under 13 (I'm 18), but it's so much easier doing this than signing up and yada yada. Anyway, I loved this movie so much. I was hooked on "I'm Still Here" for like a year. But, now I love "Always Know Where You Are". But, what irritated me so much was that I wanted to version that is on at the end of the movie that's sung by John Rzeznik, not BBMak. I just think they make the song way too pop-ish, where are John Rzeznik has the grunge sound of the Goo Goo Dolls. So, I looked around LimeWire for what felt like forever trying to find the right version. But, I finally did find it. So, my only disappointment was that it's the BBMak version and not John Rzeznik. I think his voice is simply beautiful and there's no reason why they couldn't put that version AND BBMak's on the soundtrack.

But, oh well. I guess that's what happens when this movie is considered Disney's worst movie ever. But I think they're wrong! This movie was wonderful for children, teens, and adults like. Sure, it didn't have the traditional love story like most other Disney movies, but I like how it veered away from that. Anyway, I'm getting off topic. I love the music to this movie and I was suprised to find it was James Horner that composed it. I just thought, "Isn't that the guy who did Titanic?" So, I was glad that he made his music sound different and not as intense as Titanic's was. In my opinion, Titanic's music was a bit violent, but hey. It wasn't a kid movie like Treasure Planet it. But, there you have it. A great movie and a great soundtrack!

    1 out of 5 stars You'll be disappointed.......2006-09-02

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite album. English church music at its finest........2005-10-06

Whether you have a couple dozen albums of English choral music or whether you're looking for an introduction to English choral music, this two CD collection is a must. Here you will find a wide selection of sacred favorites, from Gregorian chant to Ralph Vaughan Williams. It's a misnomer to call it "Anglican," since this would exclude (in addition to, of course, the pre-Reformation Latin hymns) the likes of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd -- both Catholics that kept to the ancient faith despite Elizabeth's (albeit relatively mild) persecutions. Tallis and Byrd set the standard in the 16th century for the distinctive "Englishness" (as opposed to Continental European) style of English choral music, with its soaring majesty yet somehow coupled with a subtle and sustained beauty (as opposed to the Continental ups and downs and often tiresome exaggerations). For those of us in the English-speaking world, this is our heritage. Let's treasure it. As for the recording itself, the mixing is superb. While listening, it's quite easy to imagine yourself in the beautiful King's College Chapel or perhaps heaven itself.

5 out of 5 stars The grand tradition of English music.......2005-09-23

Recorded in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a duo of discs dedicated to Music of the English Church previously issued as two separate discs, 'Hail, Gladdening Light', and its companion piece, 'Faire is the Heaven'. The discs here are straight copies of those discs; hence, if you have those already, there is no need to purchase this - on the other hand, if you do not have the other discs, this is a bargain.

    --Music--
This is all unaccompanied music, sung in a cathedral chapel acoustically suited for such music. The first disc has four primary sections: Music of the Latin Rite; Music of the Reformation; Music of the Restoration; and Anglican Revival and the twentieth century. The most famous composers in English music history -- Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons -- combine with later masters such as Purcell, Stanford, Howells, Walton, Britten and Vaughan Williams to form a truly masterful collection. These are anthems, hymns and other liturgical pieces that have remained important in Anglican worship, and can be often heard in situ on Sundays around the world. However, the Cambridge Singers bring their special music talent to the task, producing a good standard bearer for music of the English Church.

On the second disc, there are six Latin motets, set by composers such as Taverner, Howells, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Philips and Dering. Anthens and Introits include notables Tomkins and Purcell, and lesser-known composers such as Amner, Bairstow and Goss. Hymns span the range from old to modern, including a hymn by John Rutter himself. The disc ends with three prayer settings, including one by the underappreciated John Sheppard, and another from William Harris, whose hymn serves as the title to the companion disc. These anthems and hymns show a powerful range of music, yet show a consistent tone also that makes it rather distinctive of the music of the English church.

The group's power and grace is second to none, particularly when singing this kind of music in a place such as Ely Cathedral, arguably the most natural of settings possible.

    --Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words of each anthem or hymn. The notes for each piece also includes brief biographical information of the composer, and unique information about each work, when particular composers are represented more than once. One thing conspicuously missing is much biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the most basic of information.

    --John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

    --The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.

5 out of 5 stars music of great beauty.......2005-04-24

Pop one of these CDs into your car stero, turn up the volume and feel yourself drift into a sublime peace. Can music manifest the existence of God?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Selection, Excellent Performance.......2004-07-28

This two-CD compilation by the Cambridge Singers is truly very good. The repertoire is very diverse and only the best representations of composers and time periods are performed. ALthough most of the pieces were not written with a mixed choir in mind, the Cambridge Singers sing it so well you would not have had any idea. Their performances are careful and exquisite.

5 out of 5 stars Best all-in-one English music CD ever.......2004-04-20

This is a re-release, as one set, of two of my favorite CDs ever: "Faire is the Heaven" and "Hail Gladdening Light" by the Cambridge singers. This is a fabulous compilation of everyone's favorite works from the English Cathedral tradition, all the way from Taverner (16th century) to Tavener (21st century). The selection of works is great and touches all the most important genres. The performance is exquisite, elegant, faultless. The Cambridge Singers have a softer, less edgy sound than the Tallis Scholars, and are more expressive, which may make them easier for some people to listen to, especially for the more recent works. They are no less musical. The Parsons Ave Maria alone brings one to tears. If you want an introduction to English church music, this is the CD to start with. Also makes a great gift, if you already love this music and want to introduce someone else to it.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Wedding in Paris a Delightful British Musical.......2006-12-17

I had never even heard of Wedding in Paris before I received it as a gift a few montns ago. While the orchestrations have that brassy Broadway sound of the fifties and are not quite distinquished, the score by Hans May and Sonny Miller is original with songs that are very pleasing to the ears indeed. Yet, my favorite numbers are those charmingly "spoken" by Anton Walbrook: "Always Young", and "Strike Another Match". However, the rest of the cast sound great in songs that leave you humming after only one playing. Susan Swinford, Jeff Warren, and Evelyn Laye are excellent singers and more than serve this little known musical. Well, at least little known in the states.
Perhaps that's the beauty of the Sepia record company; they present so many rare recordings that deserve to have a second life on CD. Add to that great graphics and the unbelieveable sound that they digitalize from the original 78s. The musical opened in 1954 at the London Hippodrome and stayed for a healthy run of 411 performances.
Along with Wedding in Paris is another charming cast album, Cole Porter's Can-Can. This show has never been one of my favorite Cole Porter scores (due in a large part to the horrible screen version) so I was surprised how much better it sounded than I remembered. I love the Overture with its grand Can-Can section as well as some of the quieter moments such as George Gee and Alfred Marks singing "Come Along with Me", Irene Hilda's "Live and Let Live" and "I Love Paris". In fact Irene Hilda sounds every bit as good (if not better) than the star of the Broadway cast album. Edmond Hockridge is good too in his numbers and what a looker he was! In fact, the singer provides his own memories to the liner notes. Sepia has been kind enough to include Hockridge's version of "My Boy Bill" from Carousel in which he played Billy Bigelow. Can-Can opened at the Coliseum in 1954 and played for 394 performances.

5 out of 5 stars another great package from Sepia.......2005-04-26

This great-value disc from Sepia comprises the 1954 original London cast of CAN-CAN, with the little-known gem WEDDING IN PARIS.

CAN-CAN opened at the Coliseum in October of 1954 and ran for a solid 394 performances. Irene Hilda took over the role of La Mome Pistache from Lilo, and she was joined by talented Edmund Hockridge with up-and-comer Gillian Lynne as Claudine.

Irene Hilda wisely does not try to emulate the singular voice of Lilo, nevertheless she makes the songs her own. Her dynamite and delicious rendering of "Live and Let Live" may very well be her crowning glory. She also beautifully carries "Alle-vous En" and turns "I Love Paris" into a smokey torch ballad. Edmund Hockridge is at his best with "It's Alright with Me" and Gillian Lynne is delightful with "If You Loved Me Truly". Lynne would later become one of the theatre's foremost choreographers.

WEDDING IN PARIS opened at the Hippodrome in April of 1954 and ran for 411 performances, amazing considering the actual show has slipped into relative obscurity. The score by Hans May and Sonny Miller is lively and lovely, with Susan Swinford and Evelyn Laye in great roles. Standout numbers include "In the Pink", "It Only Took a Moment" (not to be confused with the ballad from HELLO DOLLY), "A Man is a Man" and "Strike Another Match". Anton Walbrook co-stars in a rare musical role with Jeff Warren. Both were fresh from the London run of CALL ME MADAM (that recording can be found on Sepia's "Irving Berlin in London").

The disc concludes with 5 additional selections sung by Edmund Hockridge. Another stellar release from Sepia!
