5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Folk Music.......2007-03-26

During the late 50 and early 60's folk music was popular and there were a number of groups and musicians performing in this style. Of those groups I found I listened mostly to the Kingston Trio. While it's been more than 50 years since I bought the LP record versions of these two albums, this CD has let me enjoy them all over again.

5 out of 5 stars Two Great Albums on one CD!.......2006-07-03

I was a young child when "Here We Go Again!" came out. My dad bought the album and I listened to it growing up. I recently bought these two albums reissued on one CD, and I love it. You will find several excellent songs, such as "San Miguel," that are not usually included on "Best of" recordings of The Kingston Trio.

Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Kingston Trio in it's prime.......2005-08-14

These are great Trio albums and it's nice to have them on CD.

5 out of 5 stars Best Kingston Trio Collection...EVER!.......2004-08-24

I grew up listening to these two albums (thanks to my parents) and probably memorized every song on both. With all due respect to the rotating members of the Trio, over the years, I don't think anything can compare to the original Shane/Guard/Reynolds group. If your going to buy any Trio disks...get these. Period.

KT Fans: I've been in contact recently with Bob Shane who feels that the current members of the Trio come closest to the sound of the original Shane/Guard/Reynolds lineup. May be worth catching them live. Drop Bob a line...he's super nice!

4 out of 5 stars A great collection of Kingston Trio songs.......2002-12-06

My dad always used to sing these songs to me, and I thought he made them up, but I found this album, and was amazed that all the songs I knew from my childhood were on this disk. It's heavy on sea shanties like Blow Ye Winds and Haul Away. They're very catchy tunes, and more refined than some of the more folksy ones like 'Round About the Mountain and Goober Peas (which I think is the song Michelle Pheiffer sings in the movie with the Bridges brothers). If you like harmonized, vocal songs with really memorable tunes and good lyrics, you'll like them. Some of the songs are covers, but they have a nice way of arranging them.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful debut.......2005-11-15

I thought that Men at Large made a strong first album back in 1992. It came at a good time too, since they were one of three R&B artists Gerald Levert produced that year (Gerald himself included) that had hits. But these big guys have some powerful singing voices! They were like the Ruben Studdards of back then in terms of strong singing talent. I still love So Alone, which sounded so good in the cold nights of winter 1992/93. They've got some funky numbers on here where they just party it up. But why they weren't given a stronger push on East West/Atlantic Records in the '90s is beyond me. They were one of the underrated R&B artists at the time, and I want to give their respect due with this review.

3 out of 5 stars Men at Large coming out in a Large Way.......2005-07-09

This debut album released by the Cleveland OH duo, Men at Large in 1992, was right in line with the other male based groups at that time(LeVert, BBD/New Edition, Silk, Boys II Men, Today, Basic Black and other new jack swing groups.)

Men at Large brought us something we had never seen before, two big brothers who could sing and dance, which was quite different at the time.

The first single of this cd, Use Me, came out in April '92 and immediately became a top 10 radio hit and got major play on BET's Video Soul with Donnie Simpson and Sherry Carter.

Their second single, a slow jam called UM UM good, went on to hit #1 on the R&B charts in the summer of '92 and was a smash hit.

Their most popular song off the album, So Alone, was a very sad song which talked about losing a loved one and being left all alone. This song also got plenty of radio play.

Other good songs on this album were: Stay the Night, You Me, and Aint it grand.

It was pretty decent for a debut album, but their second album really put them on the map.

4 out of 5 stars I LOVE MEN AT LARGE!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-03-03

THIS CD ISN'T AS GOOD AS "ONE SIZE FITS ALL" BUT I STILL ENJOY LISTENING TO IT!MY FAVORITE SONGS ARE "SO ALONE","STAY THE NIGHT"AND "WOULD YOU LIKE TO DANCE(W/ME)"!THESE GUYS ARE REALLY TALENTED AND THEY BOTH HAVE WONDERFUL VOICES!IF YOU ENJOY THIS "MEN AT LARGE" CD YOU WILL DEFINATELY LIKE "ONE SIZE FITS ALL"!CHECK IT OUT!

2 out of 5 stars The Sumo R&B singers, the weather boyz.......2003-12-19

I thought these guys were very talented musically, but they were getting a little to ridiculous with their fatness.
Glad they were big and proud and whatnot but they started to turn the fact that they were "big" and R&B singers into a gimmick.
I remember they had a video of them raiding a supermarket...c'mon!! They were on BET'S "Video Soul" and Donny Simpson (the then and original VJ of BET)had to nicely diss them because it didn't represent anything creative, and made them seem like the R&B version of "The FAt Boys". We all know that the Fat Boys were getting ridiculous in their videos...nothing creative just eating...I remember that video they did for "Can u feel it" and "Buff" (the fattest one that died)was smearing ice-cream all over his face while beatboxing...SIGH!
Anyways concerning M.A.L. My favorite song was "So Alone" because it related to so many things and emotions I felt at the time, I just listened to it the other day and it still moves me.

Where are these guys now??
Hopefully they have slimmed down a little and either write music for other singers or produce...hate to know that they are the managers of KFC or something.

The Cleveland Oh based Men at Large, a group discovered by Gerald Levert, came with their sophomore album in 1994 and it was bumping right away. I just pulled this cd out of "archives" and it took me back to that spot 10 years ago when I running the streets and doing my thing before I literally settled down!

My favorite songs on this cd are: Holiday, where the guys talk about everyday of the year being similiar to a holiday.."its a holiday, its your special day..its not Christmas, Thanksgiving or Valentines...

Good things dont last

Dont Cry, featuring Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat

Feet Wet..I dont wanna fall in love, I just wanna get my feet wet...let me hit it, let me get it!!!

First Day...ever since the first day I met ya, I wanted to hit it..(I wanted to hit it) but you wasnt it with...I promised it that I'll keep it on the d-low

I wanna roll, which is a smooth mellow song with a good background beat for slow dancing or two stepping

Funny Feeling

and of course, Will you marry me, which is a classic, classic song....

this is a very good CD..I would say 10 of the 12 songs could have been radio hits....wonder what happened to these brothers.

4 out of 5 stars Best Comprehensive Survey of Canadian Music Available.......1999-01-19

This anthology of three Centuries(!) of Canadian music was assembled by a former producer from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation who now works for Naxos Canada. This producer is also active in the Canadian music world, so he knows whereof he speaks (or selects, as in this case). Liscensing the best performances available from major Canadian and International labels, this is the best collection of, and introudction to, the entire Canadian music scene that I have ever come across. The booklet is informative and is as enjoyable a read as is the 2 CD set is to listen. I doubt there will ever be anything quite like it again. If only NAXOS would now start recording Canadian music on top of the Canadian artists they already record, than they will truly have one of the finest and most comprehensive classical catalogues in the world. As for now, don't pass this one up.

      5 out of 5 stars INFO.......2006-12-13

This is an interesting soundtrack, blending the talents of Mark Isham, Warren Zevon, Anne Archer, and Leonard Cohen, among others. Zevon, billed with Isham, is actually only present for two tracks -- a version of "You Don't Know What Love Is" (also performed in a slinky blues setting by Anne Archer) and "Searching For A Heart," which may be the flattest track on the album. Grady Walker is the vocalist on "Don't Cry For Me." The Leonard Cohen song, "Ain't No Cure For Love," from 1988, is a typical Cohen number, full of an artist's weary cynicism and many of the usual Cohen phrases. Which, of course, makes it a great Leonard Cohen number. Isham's score almost falls into the trap of being new age-styled, but carefully steps up from it to incoporate blues and jazz elements, some stylish classical references and lots of sneaky cinematic references. It's by and large a clever score, interesting to listen to, and able to jog you awake once in a while after appealing to the dream state. Not everyone's cup of tea, perhaps, but all-around solid stuff and very good music
