As she's gone from the Young Woman Who Could to the Woman Who Has, Ani DiFranco has explored more than her share of musical styles, all the while remaining true to her core. Even during her most extreme departures, you could hear the sound of the early albums coming through. On Little Plastic Castle, an album on which people are credited for adding pontifications, incantations, and an "evil machine" to songs, you could--for the first time--hear an almost completely new artist. Call her Ani, version 3; she couldn't have existed without hearing all of Ani, version 1's albums, and she wouldn't be as funky and experimental without the influence of Ani, version 2. She still has a lot to say--about politics, about relationships, about herself--but the messages aren't thrown in your face here (well, not as often). Instead they're wrapped in funky hooks and lots of production--anything you learn from DiFranco on this album will come from pure repetition, and for the first time, the album is varied enough, catchy enough, and subtle enough that you'll push the repeat button while cleaning the house. --Randy Silver

4 out of 5 stars Still the one to beat.......2005-12-08

Like some others who've posted here, I'm not necessarily an Ani-holic, but I have huge respect for her honesty and integrity, and the way she ran her career from a completely outsider approach into what is now a time-honored creative dynasty. She's not someone I listen to constantly, but I return to her regularly for a fix of the kind of blunt and exhilarating earnestness she represents.

That being said, I've always felt that after a certain point she just made too damn many CDs, so that at times musically she covered the same ground again and again. Try making a compilation sometime of your favorite Ani songs and you'll realize quickly just how many have the same tempo, the same key, the same basic structure and feel but (and this is the difference that saves them) new thoughts in the lyrics.

But LITTLE PLASTIC CASTLE probably is the best combination of all of Ani's best instincts along with the greatest variety in style, tempo and overall musical creativity. She also achieved a kind of unusual level of spontanteous vocal excitement on this album where she sounds even more intense and exuberant than her usual standard (which is always pretty intense!).

For me, this album and IMPERFECTLY are her two finest efforts, although I love many things scattered throughout all the rest of the CDs. If you are not already an Ani fan, this CD may be the best way "in," since if you don't like this one, I can't imagine you could generate much affection for Ani, who is so exuberantly accessible here.

5 out of 5 stars A fun, thoughtful, serious, and eye-opening album!!!.......2004-08-01

Background info before writing this review will probly help Ani fans reading it. I'm not an Ani fan in the sense of agreeing with all her messages and supporting the things she does. I am a fan, however, who admires her outspoken honesty. She knows exactly what she feels, thinks, and believes and isn't one bit afraid to put it out there & in your face. That takes guts, more power to her. This world we live in (especially this country, USA) could greatly benefit from exercising her unapologetic frankness.

This was the first album I got by Ani, and I have to say my favorite to date. Personally, I'm an eclectic & enjoy ALL music (I tend to stay mainstream [not Britney Spears-type, though], but enjoy many types of music). When I first heard Miss DiFranco, I was really quite turned off by her sound. A friend of mine had been playing her music in the car on our trips & activities, and I almost couldn't stomach it. She played Revelling/Reckoning, To The Teeth, Evolve, and probably Dilate. I just remember thinking "What is this???" Ani has a musical style all her own, very raw and real. I suppose my ears were just so used to sugar-sweet candy pop that I was somewhat disgusted. But even 'alternative' rock like death metal & all that don't have anything on her; she's got something that so many other artists, whether or not I like them, don't have.

Anyway, back to the task at hand: reviewing "Little Plastic Castle." I'm pretty sure the reason I like it so much is it is probably one of the more musically melodic albums she has out. What I mean is someone who is used to pop and things like that would probably do well to buy this CD as their first Ani album because it's closest to what they know. It's very effective in that way because it tunes the pop listner in by using sounds they can handle while presenting very deep messages and opinions that aren't so popular like the sound they are carried by.

Listening to number 1, the title track, really made me step back and think how boring things can get as far as the music industry and TV, etc. Some lyrics from that song are: "In a coffe shop / in a city / which is every coffe shop / in every city / on a day which is every day / I pick up a magazine / which is every magazine / read a story and forget it right away" She has a very good point here about how the media (TV, radio, movies, newspapers, magazines, etc) train us to know what is 'normal,' and keep spoonfeeding us those stereotypes.

The lyrics to song 2, "Fuel," are hard-hitting & heavy. They talk about racism (slavery), politics, and many other things. It's a very good song to sit & ponder because at the end of it she sums all of her scenarios up by describing them each one as "a fire just waiting for fuel." One of my favorites!

Track 5 is good, "Two Little Girls." It's sad and dark but it's a good listen, it compells me all the way through each time.

I reccomend this CD highly because it helped me break out of the pop mindset, even though I was eclectic I never really understood how narrowminded I was musically (as well as politically, etc). Go for it! Do your best swan dive into the bold, bold world of Ani DiFranco.

5 out of 5 stars Different and Not to be missed.......2004-06-18

This was Ani DiFranco's first really synthesized, fancily-produced album. And it's a whole different world from the style she was known for before this. Listening to this is definitely like being introduced to a whole new artist. There are more electronics, more experimental song styles, and even her voice has changed a little -- it's a tad raspier.

The lyrics are still just as good -- but don't buy it expecting the old Ani ... you have to love it as something completely new.

And I DID love it!

The songs are made not more watery, but more powerful by the elaborate compositions. The topics capture so many sides of life -- from the pretty to the dark.

One song urges rude people to "just suck up and be nice".

Another song, whose entire atmosphere tells of a desperate hour proclaims, "If you think you know what I'm doing wrong, you're gonna have to get in line."

GRAVEL has a catchy, hardcore beat and really gets across the humor in having an ex that you just seem to keep taking back, no matter what he does.

And it all leads up to the climax -- the final song -- that is more of a hypnotic symphony than a song. It only has a few spoken words -- the rest it says in its swaying rhythm -- but it is absolutely powerful. An expected pinnacle.

The first song or two on the album are just warm-ups. Skip past them to really delve into the riches of this outstanding record.

This album is not to be missed by anyone who likes true-to-the-heart, poignant, powerful experimental music.

4 out of 5 stars A solid album from Ani..........2004-05-10

To me this is a solid album from Ani... It's also my first one that I've bought/owned by Ani - got lucky and picked it up in a 2nd hand store (thought it's definitely worth full price)...
Musicwise, 'Two Little Girls' and 'Swan Dive' is my two favorite tracks, though I like them all at varying degrees of enjoyment... As well as I like that it doesn't sound exactly the same from... So after listening to this one, I'm looking forward to one day picking up "Not A Pretty Girl"... Plus, I'm very impressed that Ani performed at the "Women March for Choice" on March 20, 2004... - Savannah Skye...

2 out of 5 stars This one never pulled me in..........2004-03-28

I own Not A Pretty Girl, Dilate, and this album by Ani Difranco. While I thouroughly enjoy the first two--Little Plastic Castle never pulled me in at all really. I've given it numerous listens and still I don't think it remotely compares to the other two albums I own by her. The only song that sticks out to me is "Gravel" and even that song I am having trouble recollecting exactly in my mind. I suggest the other two if you are a starting Ani fan. I must admit I'm surprised by the overwhelming popularity of this one.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-18

Back in '89 I was a budding garage guitarist. A sophisticated uncle took me up to Vancouver BC for the International Folk Music Festival where I saw this band that literally changed the way I look at rock music. I was 17 years old and The Pentangle blew me away. I have since learned many reasons to appreciate this quintet--most especially the original line-up. As for this collection of their music? Disc one and two make for an interesting "Greatest Hits" style selection. Some of my favorites are missing and the work from Bert and John's solo albums could have been replaced by some more team efforts but still...not a bad selection. Disc three offers nothing truly new. It is the concert from Sweet Child, including the unearthed tracks released not long ago with the reissue, resequenced to resemble the original concert. Enjoyable but not ground breaking. Disc four, however, is worth the price alone. These are amazing live tracks. Most come from television appearances. The sound is listenable for the era and the performances inspired. These are not BBC "In The Studio" recordings...this is true live with an audience and the band goes for it. I would recommend this for any fan.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Wee Folk-Jazz Band.......2007-06-08

It's time that a good, multi-disc compilation came out on Pentangle. The band brought together great musicians [Bert Jansch, John Renborn, Danny Thompson, Jacqui McPhee, Terry Cox} to create something much greater than the sum of the parts. The excellent rhythm section of Thompson and Cox providing a foundation for the virtuosity of Renborn and Jansch to take us into heavenly places, whilst Jacqui's pure vocals are breath taking. The first four years of the band produced some of the best Brit-folk music of all time. I could listen to this music ever day of my life and never tire of it. Buy it and enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2007-05-30

If it had included the studio version of "Let No Man Steal Your Thyme" it would have been perfect. :-)
Some of the movie tracks are not that enjoyable, but I was happy to have finally had a chance to hear them. There's plenty of great music on here even with skipping those tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-05-08

I just recently got this collection and had only listened to the first 3 discs but from what I have heard this is a great collection. It includes singles, alternate takes, key album cuts, and live performances from concerts, BBC radio, and TV and detailed liner notes in a nice digi pack booklet. All the members of Pentangle have contributed to the notes and the sound quality is amazing, especially the Shel Talmy produced cuts. This is an excellent (albeit expensive) primer if you're looking to get into this group since it gives a much broader overview of their recording career so if want to take the plunge into a sound incorporating traditional folk, jazz, pop, and amazing acoustic guitar playing than dive in here. Please keep in mind that the Pentangle was a lot jazzier in their approach than the Incredible String Band and Fairport Convention even though these bands were drawing from the same well each one has there own unique sound but the Pentangle were far more popular so they are a pretty good starting point if you are looking to get in to the English version of folk-rock.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars These guys coulda been contenders..........2007-06-15

..and in a better world, the Rubinoos would've been stars. The proof's in this sparkling three-disc set. If you like guitar-driven melodic pop with soaring harmony vocals and some tongue-in-cheek humor thrown in for good measure, it doesn't get much better than this. The obvious influences are '60s-era Beach Boys and the Raspberries, but the Rubinoos' music stands on its own merits and is well worth discovering.

If you're already a Rubes' fan, the best reason to buy this set is the terrific remastering job. I offer in evidence "Rendezvous," an Andy Paley song originally recorded for--then left off of--the band's 1978 long-player BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD. I'd heard this song previously on their 1994 rarities collection GARAGE SALE, where it sounded like a 16-year-old outtake. Not any more. Now it leaps out of the speakers, sounding like the Beach Boys produced by Phil Spector, background vocals and castanets right in the room with you. Amazing. And pretty much every song sounds this good (who knew there was so much bass to be found in those old Beserkley tapes?) There might also be the odd track you haven't found elsewhere, like the Rubes' title song from the "Revenge Of The Nerds" soundtrack, or their cover of the Raspberries' "Cruisin' Music." The previously unreleased 1978 Hammersmith Odeon concert also included here is just icing on the cake.

So buy this box to either discover a wonderful, unjustly-neglected band, or to hear familiar songs sound better than they ever have before. You win either way.

5 out of 5 stars Power Pop Classics from the Rubinoos.......2007-04-20

Simply put the Rubinoos are one of the Greatest Power Pop Bands of all time! And while this really does NOT include "Everything " it does a great Job by featuring all of the Songs from their first Two LP's and a ton of tunes from the rest of their 30+ year Career! What really makes this a must have is the Super Live Show featured on disc three from 1978. Energy galore!

5 out of 5 stars EAR CANDY.......2007-04-06

The Rubinoos are a talented band who did not get the recognition they deserved. They rock with hooks and leave the listener wondering who are these "guys"....Buy it,enjoy it and spread the word about THE RUBINOOS".

5 out of 5 stars An Embarrassment of Riches.......2007-04-05

These guys were way too good in the '70s, and they're still way too good. A band has that managed to draw on roots and influences and still sound totally fresh, The Rubinoos are LONG overdue for this sort of collection. Buy it now, and once you've had the tremendously fun experience of listening to it (and that's one of the great things about this great band--their music is just so damn much fun to listen to), buy another copy for your best friend. He or she will thank you. And speaking of thanks, here's to the band for all the music in this set, a document that shows how great they were at the beginning and that proves they haven't lost a step.

5 out of 5 stars Power pop at it's finest..........2007-04-04

You should not buy this set if you don't like hooky songs, great harmonies and incredible guitars. You should not buy this set if you don't like The Beatles, The Beach Boys and The Raspberries. Even if you already own Rubinoos LPs or CDs, the incredible mastering, the recently discovered and freshly mixed 1978 live performance from The Hammersmith Odeon makes this purchase a no-brainer. You've been warned, don't play cute.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-05-13

I have to confess that I've always loved the old Donovan songs and his suggestive slightly imperfect voice.
If you are like me it is the best CD you can by in the world.

5 out of 5 stars A Nice Complication of Donovan's Early Work.......2006-07-18

This is a folk type record with Donovan accompanying himself on guitar and harmonica. Though many people of the day were heralding Donovan as the British Dylan, his music is really quite different. True he does play the harmonica, but Donovan has a melodic voice that Dylan, and most anyone else for that matter, could ever equal. "Josie" is one of my all time favorite Donovan songs. I heard him sing it when I was sixteen at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, California and was really blown away.

Of course, "Catch the Wind" Donovan's first huge single is everybody's favorite (if it's not it should be) and as a bonus the single version is included on this disc as well as the LP version. But one should not overlook "Colours" when listening to Don's early work. It's one of my favorite songs. "The War Drags On," is an anti Vietnam war song and I wish I was alive back in the day to see how people reacted to it. "Candy Man" is simply outstanding. I've heard Bob Dylan's version on the bootleg "Great White Wonder," and believe me, Dylan may have turned out to be the Poet of a Generation, but Donovan beats him hands down when it comes to performing and interpreting traditional songs. Just something about his Scottish voice I guess.

5 out of 5 stars donovan doesn't colour by numbers .......2006-01-02

i've read in donovan's book "hurdy gurdy man" that he was one of the first singer/songwriters too mix politics with rock or folk
and suceeded jut like bob dylan did with his first 3 or 4 albums
anyway donovan is a talent that goes vasely un-noticed due to the sucession of bob dylan..who wrote excellent lyrics in his sleep.....
donovan also wrote excellent lyrics and beautiful melodies and this album shows where donovan could make abstract songs packed with a punch like "sunny goodge street" and his classic recording "universal solider" this album also features my favorites "the war drags on" "do you hear me now"

a man who had his heart right in the centre of what was going on in the world..a messiah who stands along side bob dylan as a truly great poetic genius

5 out of 5 stars First taste of Jonathan Richman.......2007-04-11

Modern Lovers recipe: take 1 part Velvet Underground + 1 part Violent Femmes. Blend. It really is a shame that Jonathan Richman and the the Modern Lovers never got the wide audience or even the same cult following thier predecessors (the VU) or their followers achieved (their influence on the Violent Femmes, TMBG, and Weezer is evident immediately). Their debut album catches this unique band at their loudest & rawest. The bonus tracks on this new printing are great songs, too. Disc standouts: Roadrunner, Old World, She Cracked, Hospital, Government Center, I'm Straight.

    1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2007-01-05

I enjoy alternative music, rock, pop, opera, classical, foreign and all that jazz. When it comes to music I enjoy, it must have a few minor musical qualifications. However, this cd I believe is lacking in any musical quality. No talent could save this band from themselves. Having the singers actually stay on pitch might help, but even this is doubtful. Usually for music that is a must, but obviously the "rebelious" nature is still clinging around the band. This ridiculous notion of "bad lyrics" has brought this group to rise into the American conciousness. Unfortunately, it sounded like a terrible recording of garage band quality, and I am still getting over the emotional damage. All joking aside, this "music" should be avoided at all costs! It was boring, I wasted my hearing on it, so I'm warning everyone else so they won't make the same mistake.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential.......2006-12-17

I'm a man of many words, yet this album leaves me speechless. I discovered it over 17 years ago, when I learned that both the Sex Pistols' Road Runner and the Burning Sensation's Pablo Picasso were written by the same person: Mr. Jonathan Richman. I wasn't prepared for the emotional honesty from The Modern Lovers, it was unlike anything I had ever heard before. Jonathan Richman sang about the things he loved: old buildings, art, neon signs, girls, and of course, driving down the highway with the radio on. It changed my life, hearing that record. I no longer saw rebellion as a reaction to norms, but as positive steps toward an independent future. To sum up this album by it's intellectual and spiritual impact sell it short. This album is a raw, ragged album, that sounds way ahead of it's time. "I'm Straight" is so upfront and naked, it makes Morrisey and his ilk seem like guarded, cranky souls. There aren't many albums that can have as much an impact as this one. If you don't own it, you're missing out on one of the true unheralded classics of rock and roll. Listen; and fly into the mystery.
    PS
Thirteen years ago I wrote a fan letter to Jonathan Richman's record company, and two months later he sent me a hand-written postcard. And about four years ago, when I saw him in Memphis Tennessee, I drunkenly blubbered to him after a show, that I admired him. He grabbed my hand, asked me my name, and said, "Tim, I care about how you feel." I know...I know...Sounds gay, but the guy was so cool and earnest that I was left speechless. I left almost immediately after some pleasantries because I didn't want to spoil the moment. Just a terrific artist and human being.

5 out of 5 stars Massachusetts When It's Late at Night.......2006-09-09

One of the greatest LP's ever recorded. If you don't get it you're already dead. If so, go listen to Journey and do us all a favor and kill yourself. It's mind-boggling to think it's out of print in the US. The Castle CD version is worth it just for the liner notes alone.

5 out of 5 stars It grows on you.......2006-08-01

My friend gave me this album and I love it. I thought it was funny, kind of silly at first, but the more I listen to it, the deeper the lyrics seem to get. Its a really complete album, mixing some punk elements with some rockabilly, and then theres the jams like "hospital" and "girlfren" which are amazingly beatiful. The vocals are in a class of their own because they're so unique. Its a must have for any classic rock fan.

5 out of 5 stars steeleye span collection.......2007-05-25

This has all my favorites of steeleye span. I have collected most of their tapes over the years and now glad to have the best on CD.

    5 out of 5 stars A Correction.......2006-07-08

"A Music Fan" said: "... the impact of Steeleye Span has been widespread both in rock where they were the first band to incorporate medieval influences in rhythm and texture and among international groups for whom their use of traditional folk tunes set a groundbreaking example ..."

Actually, i think that you'll find that that distinction pretty much belongs to the previous band founded by bass player Ashely "Tyger" Hutchings, Fairport Convention.

Doesn't matter -- this is great stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Much improved sound quality but........2005-06-18

Yes the sound quality is much improved, but the vocals were recorded with a little over driven crunch when the vocals are loud. The older more flat mastering of the songs hides this a little better. But with this being said I still think it is a good buy. You can always turn down your treble a little to cover this if you find it annoying.

I already have these albums from the original CD releases and The improvement in sound clarity is for the most part great for a recording made over 30 years ago.
As a bonus, the set includes a great track "General Taylor".

5 out of 5 stars Hark!........ I hear a new and beautiful sound being born!.......2005-06-09

You might want to get "Lark in the Morning" if you don't have the 1st 3 Steeleye albums - all 3 remastered on 2 cd's for about $11.00 is a nicely packaged steal (other great bands from the era should consider this quality/helpful/convenient format - how about the next three Steeleye's for vol. 2?)!

Steeleye's first album (which I originally wrote this review for) truly is something special! Every song on here is great...too bad that this line-up didn't get a more thorough work-out since the magic is flying everywhere on this recording, and having BOTH female singers makes this one SOAR (though the male vocals are spot-on as well)!

The Blacksmith version on here may be one of my favorite songs I've ever heard in this genre. Other beautiful songs like Fisherman's Wife, Dark-Eyed Sailor, Lowlands of Holland, All Things Are Quite Silent, and One Night as I Lay on my Bed have such great harmonies, melodies and energy (some rock! I'd love to see Tull record a couple of these) that they stick with you long after the cd shuts off. Black-leg Miner is such an energetic and trippy string-whacking and cool vision of a new musical style, I am amazed...even that heavy accent really adds to the song (Bluegrass musicians should check this out). Is there a better way to start a new band and album than the Calling On Song? I could go on and on with other songs on HARK!

This album is just wonderful from beginning to end, do yourself a favor and let this soak into your soul, you won't regret it. Cross-over appeal is broad with this band. I should further explore Terry and Gay Wood's music to see if this magic was created on other recordings of theirs. I know it was on the (also great) later Steeleye albums (this album has drumming which gives it a familiar feel, although they tried it without drums after this album for awhile).

Now for this review, the next two great albums need at least some comment to reassure the unconvinced that it was no fluke - THE MAGIC CONTINUES! Please To See The King starts the "new" sound with the cranked up strings and dulcimer minus Terry & Gay Woods but adding Martin Carthy and Peter Knight (two incredibly talented musicians and singers). So many excellent songs here that getting into them all would be daunting, let's just say that they are ALL great and this package is a blast to listen to all-through.

I imagine this band sometimes as hairy-feet Hobbits smoking long-bottom leaf cranking their wired, crazy little electric instruments to the Shire's delight at the great harvest festival - Mordor quakes at the power of these Middle-Earth minstrels, Orcs and Goblins run for their lives...fun thought anyway! Thanks for the gift of your music Steeleye members past and present. The world would feel more empty without it. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Much improved sound quality.......2005-01-14

Most Steeleye Span fans will already have these albums from the original CD releases. The question may be, should I spend the money to get this package. My answer is a resounding yes!
The improvement in sound clarity is phenomenol. Its like hearing these albums for the first time again (especially the first two.)
As a bonus, the set includes the track "General Taylor" previously only available on the compilation "Individually And Collectively"

    1 out of 5 stars Stay Away.......2006-01-05

While the piping is excellent, the audio, particularly in the first half of the cd is terrible. Nearly 15 minutes are almost indecipherable. I think the recording was made with a hand held mike at the edge of a field.

4 out of 5 stars Edinburgh Military Tattoo.......2001-05-19

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo first started in 1947 with some spirited displays of army piping and dancing. Since that time the show has grown to become a world class act, unfortunately losing some of its traditional elements along the way. The word "Tattoo" is a corruption of the Dutch "Doe den Taptoe" which literary means "turn off the taps", a reference to when a lone drummer would play a "tattoo" or drum roll to signal the inkeeprs to stop serving beer and to summon the troops back to barracks. This ceremony was performed by the British while they were in the low countries during the early 18th century, but it is a custom common to many armies of that time, in particular the various German princeapalities of the day. Over time the Tattoo evolved into a more elaborate affair as more bands and musicians were drawn into its fare. What we have here is the modern development of the form started in previous centuries. The Edinburgh Tattoo is justly famed for its display of massed pipes and bands, and while the recording quality here is not the best, the listener can still get a good idea of the spectacle produced. The original recording of this 1972 show was recorded by EMI, but this version is a knock-off cut that was done by a small American record firm, and which since has been sold about in various forms as a popular item. It is unfortunate that we don't have a better version of the show for listeners than this. The Tattoo produces a recording every year, as well as a video which can be obtained by contacting the Edinburgh Military Tattoo via their website which can be found using any search engine. The good thing about this recording is that it does provide a glimpse of the show in its heyday, where modern fluff and show biz influences had not crept in as much as they have today. For this reason this CD is worth having, and serves as an introduction to this great pageant of the Scottish regiments and the British army. Even though the show is watered down today with pop elements, the grandeur is still there when the massed pipes and drums march out onto the castle esplanade playing the grand old tunes. Even the politically correct producers can't ruin this grand sight, and its hoped they never will!

5 out of 5 stars Not like being there, but a good appetizer.......2000-11-23

The producers and engineers for this CD are to be commended for the remarkable quality they obtained on this outdoor recording! While not quite like being there, it does convey the spirit and energy of the Tattoo.

5 out of 5 stars Pipes and Drums: Amazing Grace.......2000-06-11

I love the sound of the pipes for this one song, and is my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Uk PUNK Classic- Essential!!!.......2007-03-10

The fact that theres only 3 other reviews up to this point shows how underrated this classic is. This is the first "punk " record out of the Uk released before the pistols clash etc. The Damned really were a special group combining tight songwriting unbelievable energy and more importantly a sense of humor. Almost every song on this record (cd) is a stone cold classic - crisp quick loud full of fun and well "rocking".
Great vocals by singer/ vampire Dave Vanian- a booming voice over shearing riffs and pounding drums. This along with Machine Gun Ettiquette (the damneds third lp)is a must own alongside Never mind the bollocks the clash's debut and In the City by the Jam. The damned still tour (yeah theyre fatter older and not nearly as good as the glory days but worth seeing all the same. THe damned also stayed exclusively on Independant labels while all the other "punk" bands signed major label deals. The damned did sign with Mca in the mid eighties and suffered artisically despite some flirts with major success. Its been heralded as the Uk's best from 1977 and its hard not to agree.

    5 out of 5 stars the Damned,Damned,Damned.......2006-03-08

The Damned have been creating caos for thirty years
the 1st to do it all and undoubted the best .On this album, Lead singer Dave Vanian,Lead guiarist and {writer on the majority of the album }Brian James,Bass guitar Captain Sensible, and Drummer Rat Scabies completely crush all hopes for anybody wanting to rock the hardest.Fast ,Heavy songs played as if they where your abusive stepdad.Probly the most underrated Punk band ,or just band in genaral.Songs like "Feel the pain" and "fan club"offer a darker more "gothic" sound, while "Stab your back"(writen by Scabies)and "NEAT,NEAT,NEAT" provide some serious tremours through the vains that would scare a Junkie.
"See her tonight" is forsure the peak song of the album.so full of energy from begining to end it makes a speed addict gelious.
A must have Album for anyone who considers themselves a true punker and for anyone that loves rock and roll

5 out of 5 stars The best British punk album.......2005-11-08

Okay, I definatly have a bias twords early American punk (the Ramones, Johnny Thunders, ect). But I must conclude this is an absolute punk classic! Being the first British punk album, you can definatly hear its American influences. Heck, most of it sounds like Johnny Thunders. Despite all this, it is incredibly unique and just flat out rocking. The Damned did punk rock before and better than anyone else in Britain. The songwriting is fantastic (most of it by guitarist Brian James) and the musicianship is much better than the average punk band. A good deal of the songs don't follow the set three-chord punk route. As I said above, Brian James was one of punk's best songwriters, with his tunes such as "Neat Neat Neat" and "New Rose" are undisputed punk classics. The band went downhill after he left unfortunatly, even though "Machine Gun Etiquitte" was a good album. I'm very glad to see someone had the brains to put this back in print.

5 out of 5 stars A punk CLASSIC finally back in-print!.......2005-11-07

The Sex Pistols, the Ramones, and the Clash get more props for kick-starting punk, but the lesser-known but equally influential band, the Damned, deserve a place next to them. Their debut, produced by Nick Lowe and issued in 1977 (a landmark year in punk-rock), is a stone-cold classic. You may recognize "New Rose," the best track here and not surprisingly their first single, but just about every track here is great. Just listen to the samples and hear for yourself - this is punk rock at its best, no pretensions, no pomposity, just raw, adrenaline-fueled rock that doesn't let up or burn out. This album went out-of-print for a little awhile, but now it's BACK IN-PRINT for a pretty fair price, only $14 retail.

Like the Sex Pistols, the Damned imploded soon after their phenomenal debut, but fortunately, they reunited within a year and had a long and remarkably consistent career, a rarity in punk rock. However, their debut remains their best and the first place to look.

    5 out of 5 stars The Fish.......2007-07-16

This is one great album and the best Solo album of any Yes member.
Great compositions and ofcourse the bass.

I'm really looking forward to the new remaster, though I hope they won't "upgrade" the sound too much.I will keep my older release regardless. It sounds great.

I gave 5 stars for the music.I trust the CD will sound alright too and the extras (and that's why people buy it,be honest) are much apreciated.
They have to become cheaper though.$30 is way too much.
