3 out of 5 stars The Very Best of Al B. Sure..........2007-06-02

Favorite song on this disc was the "special edition" of "If I'm not your lover" by Al B. Sure featuring "Slick Rick." I actually memorized that song - and had fun doing it! Overall, I rate the disc three stars!

5 out of 5 stars I REMEMBER.......2007-02-16

I REMEMBER RIDING WITH HIM AND HIS CREW IN THIS CROWDED LIMO IN PITTSBURGH,PA. AND HE STARTED SINGING IN THE BACK AND ONE OF HIS CREW MEMBERS WERE MAKING BEATS WITH HIS MOUTH. I WAS 17-18 THEN. IM NOW 38 AND PEOPLE STILL REMEMBER ME BEING WITH HIM. THEY ALWAYS ASK, HOW WAS HE AS A PERSON? I JUST TELL THEM HIS FAVORITE WORDS TO ME WERE, SHAKIM YOURE LIVING LARGE BOY, YOU KNOW YOURE LIVING LARGE. HE WAS VERY DOWN TO EARTH. AND I TOLD CHICO DEBARGE ABOUT HOW LIVE HE WAS AND CHICO SAID ALL OF US IN THE BUSINESS SHOULD DISPLAY THE SAME QUALITIES. AND I DO AGREE.

5 out of 5 stars I have this cd, a must have!!!.......2007-01-27

I was a little girl when Al B. Sure came out with Nite and Day. I was six years old, and now I am 24. My older sister was in love with him, I think she still is. Everytime that song came on, I was singing along. He still looks good, if you ask me. His voice still sounds good, too. I only wished that him, and Christopher Williams would have had more success. Just because they are both lightskinned doesn't mean anything. That is the sad part. It is always a complexion thing. The cd has a lot of great tracks!!!! If you don't have this cd, please purchase it.

4 out of 5 stars Nice collection...but..........2006-11-06

This is a very underrated cat Al B. Sure! He wrote and produced with his first cousin Kyle West for Tevin Campbell and several others back in the New Jack 90's. This CD is a pretty good survey of his solo work but I advise you to purchase his "Private Times" and "Sexy Versus" CD's which are still available, those have some good songs on them. His work is very underrated for some reason. Listen to the ballads on those two CD's. I think the singles that got released from those two discs weren't the best and maybe that killed the last two albums sales-wise cuz Albert Brown III (June 4, 1968) was a damn good writer and producer. Especially on the slow jams. He helped Devante Swing of Jodeci out with the production on the slow jams on the Jodeci debut CD.

5 out of 5 stars I OWN THIS CD, BUT LET'S CLEAR SOMETHING UP..........2006-02-03

I never respond to other reviewers, but Juan Redman is way off. The reason why Al B. Sure never took off was because many people did not think he could sing live - especally when he made an appearance on Oprah. Since many of the artists back then in R&B had stronger voices, he was singled out, unfairly I may add, as someone you would not pay live to see. ( I was in my early 20's then and I KNOW what I'm talking about). Christopher Williams (who I love) was also slandered, many thought he was the one who cause Halle Berry to lose her hearing by beating her (which later turned out to be a false rumor). Plus, it was reported that he was somewhat of a diva at Uptown records and was not getting the proper treatment on their label. Whatever the case, it had NOTHING TO DO with them being light skinned, cause women were eating those two up (myself included), as well as Keith Sweat (who is MOST DEFINITELY a chocolate brother). Let's just clear that up.

Bottom line, Al B. Sure's first album is still great after all these years. And I've always loved the song "Right Now"...It still sounds sexy. So if you can get past all the ridiculous rumors and theories, get this CD and put it in your New Jack Swing/Quiet Storm selection. While you're at it, get Christopher Williams, Jodeci, Keith Sweat, New Edition, Miki Howard, and Gerald Levert. A great time for music, that's for sure.

The hippest of the new generation of Broadway composers, Jason Robert Brown breaks through with his first solo album, Wearing Someone Else's Clothes. Collecting songs written between 1996 and 2004, it's an eclectic mix of rock, gospel, funk, and jazz that won't surprise anyone familiar with his musicals, particularly his song cycle Songs for a New World. As a performer and a writer, Brown will draw the inevitable comparisons to Billy Joel's "angry young man" storytelling style (particularly with "Getting Out"), but he also seems to be picking up the baton from Stephen Schwartz, a well-known musical theater composer (Godspell, Wicked) who has had some success in the pianist-singer-songwriter realm. Brown and his band, the Caucasian Rhythm Kings, are frequent performers, and the numbers have a live excitement to them, often stretching out over five minutes. "Over" is a moving anti-war statement, and "Someone to Fall Back On" recalls the yearning passion of New World's "I'd Give It All for You." Guest artists include Lillias White, jazz guitarist Howard Alden, and a studio choir comprised of Brown's theater peers such as Rebecca Luker, Jessica Molaskey, Alice Ripley, and Matt Bogart. Wearing Someone Else's Clothes is an engaging and rewarding album, but that doesn't mean we can't still anxiously await Brown's next musical. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Maturing Composer.......2007-07-09

Mr. Brown is the future of the American Musical. Each of his songs are like novelettes filled with rich specific detail. The range of his talent are exhibited here--from gospel to the 'big band' sound of Sinatra, with every stop along the way covered.

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-05-19

Definitely is good stuff. Great voice. Diverse and wonderful. Check out Someone to Fall Back On.

5 out of 5 stars This may be the beginning of an obsession..........2007-03-09

I liked Jason Robert Brown before (I knew his musicals and one or two of his many names), but I love him now. Here is someone working in the world of musical theatre who is doing it right. To new listeners - be warned that it takes a few times listening through a song to begin to appreciate it - I've found that I, at least, get easily bored with songs I like right away, so consider this a good thing. To old hats, if you loved one of his shows, you'll love this. No question. So, Wearing Someone Else's Clothes. There is some absolutely incredible stuff on this CD. Take for instance the title song, a funked-out tale of a common problem - what do you do when society doesn't like you as you are? Wear someone else's clothes, of course! This falsely cheerful song doesn't preach against this occurrence, as I think a lesser writer would have done, but gets his character in deep - "anyone can be a bland infatuated sellout," he says, but amends "I think you are gonna be impressed" (at how far he takes it). It feels good fitting in ("it's been highly recommended that I smile"), but if it's not who you are it does feel like someone else's life. Very clever.

Then there's the beautiful "Someone to Fall Back On" which I guess in one of his oldest songs on the album. Much like the last number I described (and many others on this CD), it tells of an insecure man who is unsure of what he has to offer the world - this time the woman he loves. As he lays out his faults and insists that having someone to come home to is a greater joy than a fast and furious flame, his assertions grow stronger until he becomes all the things he insisted he wasn't. Also - this song contains some of the best lyrical moments on the CD ("I've been alone, I'd rather be...the half of us, the least of you, the best of me").

"Over" is a beautiful ballad of an ugly subject, the narrative of a soldier recently killed in war, flying over the world as he leaves it. It pokes at patriotism but treats the human elements of war with much sympathy. "Nothing in Common" took me a few more listenings (I was distracted the first several times, so I missed important lyrics) - it's yet another beautiful song, this time about JRB and his relationship with his brother, beginning with the boy he knew several years back that lived in his house and looked like his mother and going through the different people that this constant in his life became as they grew up. "I Could Be in Love with Someone Like You," as I said, is the superior version of The Last Five Years' song (there was a lawsuit of sorts, so really he couldn't use it). This song is riddled with wonderful jokes, lines that jump out and surprise you, and a couple wonderfully driving moments that are very exciting and musically powerful.

Lastly, another fantastic song is the final, very jazzy "Grow Old With Me," in which he's finally offering himself as all he is and all that he'll become. Written very much in the style of cheesy-broadway love-me-forever songs, it includes lines like, "grow old with me, baby lets fossilize," and "don't leave me cold, don't leave me rusted and crusted with mold." It's adorable and it's funny in the same way as the Beatle's "When I'm Sixty-Four."

So, if you have any interest in musical-type numbers and aren't afraid of songs that tell a meaningful story that you have to work a little bit to uncover, then you will love this album. This isn't music to have quietly playing in the background - it's stick-it-in-your-ears-and-let-the-rest-of-the-world-slide-away stuff. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Watch this space!.......2007-01-05

Jason Robert Brown is an amazing writer/talent. His ideas are creative and easy to listen to, so I can't understand why he isn't all over Broadway. I predict great things for him, especially after this album gets the notice it deserves.

5 out of 5 stars YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU BOUGHT THIS!!!.......2006-11-30

This album is proof that Jason Robert Brown is a musician's musician, and that he has mastered many different forms of popular music. Each of these 11 songs could stand on their own as a brilliant song, and none of these have the same style or feel as another.
Brown's pure talent shines through this album, and there are several moments that are just so beautiful that I just get chills listening to them. Every lyric and harmony has been precisely placed, and the music always fits the idea of the song very naturally. There are some amazing performance moments on this album; Brown is an incredible pianist and singer in addition to his composing and arranging talents.
This is probably the album that I listen to more than any other, and I would recommend it to anyone. It is packed with amazing musicality.
Don't listen to this while trying to get work done; these songs will steal your attention and keep it for the whole duration of the CD.

The pundits claim that Ol' Blue Eyes did his best work with Columbia in the '50s, but there's more great '60s and '70s stuff here than you can shake a stick at. After all, Sinatra wouldn't start his own label only to sing schlock. This four-CD set was released to celebrate The Chairman's 75th birthday and it traces the mellowing of that tremendous voice like the aging of a fine wine. It also adds eight unreleased tracks to a staggering song list highlighted by biggies like "New York, New York," "My Way," "The Way You Look Tonight," "It Was a Very Good Year," and "The Song Is You." --Michael Ruby

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the Four Essential Sinatra Box Sets.......2007-06-19

Along with The Columbia Years, The Capitol Singles Collection, and Sinatra in Vegas, this is a must-have for any Sinatraphile. His Reprise years saw some great ballads and some excellent re-makes of older Sinatra classics. Because of the occasional inconsistency of Sinatra's later Reprise releases, this boxed set is an economical way to get the best of his later work without buying the later albums.
Sound is excellent, and the set comes with a good booklet on Sinatra as well.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you'd want from the Reprise Years.......2006-06-08

Few vocalists pack the drama, emotion, and swagger of Frank Sinatra and "The Reprise Collection" compiles Frankie at his best during that era. You couldn't possibly pack EVERYTHING her recorded on Reprise into a box set...it would be enormous! This covers the gravy of his recordings for Reprise from 1960 to 1986 and shows his career trajectory during those many years, going from a middle-aged pro to the twilight of his years. Anything and everything is pretty much here, from "Something Stupid" to pop classics like "New York, New York" all delivered in the inimitable Sinatra style. Reading over the track listing is a trip down memory lane and so many of these tracks were signature songs Sinatra defined and owned. Of course there's the age-old debate about whether his Capitol or Reprise years were his best; I say who cares! Pop these CDs in and you'll see Frankie was still the consummate artist until almost the end.

5 out of 5 stars Very good collection for a good price.......2006-02-05

This is a great value if you are looking for the many highlights of Frank in the Reprise years. This will give you many (not all) of his great recordings. This will save you much time and money vs. trying to find many of these songs individually.

In short: gives you alot of songs for the money. However, there is much more out there during the Reprise years to discover.

5 out of 5 stars A Dazzling Collection And A Must Have For All Sinatra Fans.......2005-07-08

When I got this four cd boxed set nearly 10 years ago, I was pretty heavily into Sinatra and already owned the excellent "The Capitol Years" boxed set, but I always leaned slightly towards the Reprise years, since those were the first Sinatra recordings I've ever heard.

"The Reprise Collection contains the best work from Sinatra at Reprise Records, the record company he started in 1962 and made a lot of his best work at. This four cd collection is the best representation of his career released. Sinatra was always like fine wine, getting better with age, and here, in his autumn years, was never finer.

Here is where you'll find a lot of Sinatra's best songs. Indeed, songs like "Fly Me To The Moon", "Strangers In The Night", "The Summer Wind", "Somethin' Stupid", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "My Way" and "(Theme From) New York, New York" rank among Sinatra's best and most popular works. Of course, there are a number of underrated gems here that really deserve to be heard, especially the stuff on the latter half of the third disc. And I would also like to reply to the reviews to say his voice was not in top form on the fourth disc. Well, Sinatra was much older at this point, plus he smoked, so it was only fitting that his voice changed. However, it worked in his favor. A lot of the songs Sinatra sing in this period, like "There Used To Be A Ballpark", "Send In The Clowns", "The Gal That Got Away/It Never Entered My Mind" and "Here's To The Band", were meant to be sung from an old person's perspective, and Sinatra performed them perfectly. So it ends here.

The booklet is flawlessy put together. Very informative with some great photos. This boxed is an absolute must for all Sinatra fans or anyone with any taste in music whatsoever.

5 out of 5 stars ninety-proof gin.......2005-07-08

Emotionally powerful stuff that brings many of us, who do not own everything he released, up to speed. What a classic! Iconic music that conveys such emotion and memories.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite CD for jazz standards.......2006-05-19

I absolutely love this CD. I've had it for years and never get bored of it. Not only are they terrific songs, they are wonderful performances by the great vocalists of that time. I really enjoy buying jazz cds with various artists because I can sample new artists. After buying this CD I went on to buy music by Julie London, Eartha Kitt, and the list goes on. Great standards and great performance - the way these songs should be sung! Cry Me a River and Black Coffee - my favorites!

By the way, there's one review that describes this cd as man-bashing. I don't get that feeling when I listen to the CD. To me, it's fantastic love songs - and sometimes love is sad or unfair, or really great - and that's all there is to it.

5 out of 5 stars Blankets of Nostalgic Bliss.......2005-10-22

Can you hear the soothing rawness of the needle landing on the vinyl? Can you smell the rich ruby lip rouge seducing the sound stage? Can you see the swaying sirens blessed with longing lungs and forelorn hearts? Here you have Edith Piaf and Etta James, the songs Cry Me a River and Smoke Gets In Your Eyes. This collection sealed my arrival to true womanhood and music lover land. Listening to these ladies, true Torch Singers, I felt transported back to the hallways of my parents' high schools and my grandparents' parlour rooms. The biographical writings contained in the CD jacket makes for good reading as a luxe bonus. I've had this tremendous collections for years now but all that currently remains is the gorgeous CD cover, so I'm putting a freshly sealed copy in my shopping cart, as should you. Bought during a strange Eartha Kitt fixation, this CD offers a wealth of long satisfying listening pleasures. Run a bath on a rainy day or take a stroll through a fresh snowfall. Whatever ambient escape you desire, this auric interlude will warm you with blankets of nostalgic bliss.

the distinctive tonalities, stylings, and intimate
involvement with the songs which each of these ladies
presents. As each voice comes on with its own song
of love-lorn experience and "wisdom" gained, it is
instantly recognizable as belonging to the particular
lady who sings it. There is pathos in these songs,
but scarely any pitiful whining. And, strangely,
although the subject matter is about sadness and
loss, the presentations are soft and soulful, very
restful and in a way, comforting. That's the way
of the world -- it happens to us all -- life is
not just laughter and blase glitz, it's also
cold experience and pain, but at some point there
has to be soulful, restful assessment and release.
For me, the slight irritation in some of the orchestrations,
is the "intrusion" of the jazzy, muted trumpets as if
inserting a bit of razzing worldly smart-aleck
comment. The other possible irritation for some
may be the inclusion of Marlene Dietrich among these
stylish ladies of song -- hers seems more like a
"campy" inclusion, with even a talking portion in
the song.
The personal standouts for me are Billie Holiday,
Ella Fitzgerald (stylish sophistication personified),
Eartha Kitt, Edith Piaf, Etta James, Dinah Washington
(what a special sound her voice has!), Carmen McRae
(another special sound).
The booklet included has excellent photographs of
Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald,
Judy Garland, Julie London, Eartha Kitt, Marlene
Dietrich, Etta James, and LaVern Baker.
The purpose is: "The lives of the women who pour their
hearts out on -Sirens of Song: Classic Torch Singers-
read like a litany of heartache, hardship, seesaws of
rejection and adoration, and deaths that came too soon.
Emotion and upheaval make for 'good torch.' Technically,
a torch song is about unrequited love. Here we have
broadened the definition to include all aspects of
love -- good, bad, and uncontrollable -- for that
special, or ultimately not-so-special someone." --
Norma Campbell Edwards. "Happy" listening.

3 out of 5 stars So So Sirens.......2004-02-15

I appreciate good jazz vocals; but, these are just ok jazz vocals, with big name singers. I guess I had expected the songs to be cleaned up a bit - you know digitally perfect. While there are a lot of wonderful songs here, by most of the original performers, that does not make them the best versions of the songs. Unfortunately the feel of the songs gradually goes from lounge jazz (good) to early Doo-whop (just ok). Still, if you're in the mood for some historic / nostalgic performances by the first first ladies of music, there is a place in your collection for this disk. I personally enjoyed Judy Garland's: But Not For Me.

The one other thing about the CD I didn't care for was the marketing technique used. It is an honorable thing to support shelters for battered women; however, it is not necessary to employ subtle, emotional male-bashing in the liner notes. Our two genders will never achieve equality, if they can't treat each other with respect and consideration.

5 out of 5 stars Listen once and you're hooked.......2004-01-23

I used to work part-time at Tower Records. Every day when you work at Tower, you get to play a CD sometime during the course of your shift. Whenever I played this CD, customers would flock up to the front counter wanting to know what it was and where in the store they could find it (the first time the copy I was playing was the only copy in the store -- the first customer who asked me for it got to buy it right off the CD player and I had to special-order it for a bunch of other people). It got so popular in the store that the manager ordered a bunch and put the CD on one of the preview-play stations.

5 out of 5 stars Dan Akroyd at his finest.......2005-07-20

I was the biggest fan in america of the USA for Africa group. I had heard about them and figured the album would be great. There had to be a great deal of excitement when you had the talent of Michael Jackson, the Pointer Sisters, Steve Perry, Cyndi Lauper and Bruce Springsteen on the same track. Well, something happened on the way to heaven. Dan Akroyd absolutely steals the show on this album. I remember seeing the "We are the world" video and being blown away by Akroyd's performance in the video. I knew he was funny, but he was just on his game on this album. Bravo sir Dan!

I remember being moved by the whole USA for Africa experience and put together a benefit album called, "East Douglas county for North Omaha". What an all star lineup. You had me on vocals along with Kevin Seitzer, Kroll, Meat, Jeff Benson and Julie Powers. Burns played the most gutwrenching keyboard riff ever heard on an album and members of meat's family piped in some truly old school polka. It was a great song for a great cause. We raised $3.78 for North Omaha. We made a difference.

5 out of 5 stars I used to love this song!!.......2004-06-06

I was 8 when this album came out. My parents have it on tape and we used to listen to this all the time. I would like to get the CD because the tape is starting to go. I remember watching the video segement and the making of it because we have it on video somewhere. It was for a great charity and needs to be released again. The singers of today should record it again and do it for charity.

5 out of 5 stars We Are The Hits (that never were).......2004-03-07

First of all: DON'T buy this CD just for the title song (Unless you need it for a special project) AND, don't buy it to help starving people in Africa. That boat sailed a long time back. For some reason, this CD has been Out Of Print for ages, so the proceeds will go to the reseller who has to charge a MINT for it because of its scarcity. So, WHY BUY IT? Bruce Springsteen, Steve Perry, Chicago, Tina Turner, Huey Lewis, Kenny Rogers, The Pointer Sisters and Prince. If you're a fan of any of those artists: the extra songs unique to the collection are among the best they've done. They're all superstars trying to one up each other. So, they're great. Each song could have been (and should have been) a hit single. Bruce Springsteen's first official (non seasonal) live release with the E Street Band "Trapped" is a great take on a Jimmy Cliff song. I can't get the tune out of my head. Steve Perry's contribution blows away his solo hit as well as most Journey tunes. Tina Turner, Kenny Rogers, Huey Lewis & The News and The Pointer Sisters were all hot at the time too, and their tracks show it, too. We Are The World is a triumph of Quincy Jones and and an apparently still on top of his game, Michael Jackson, trying to squeeze the kitchen sink into one song. They did it, and it has worn out its welcome for most listeners, but all in all, this is a great collection anyway because We Are The Hits you haven't heard.

3 out of 5 stars Charity rock or one big Pepsi jingle?.......2004-02-28

USA For Africa's We Are The World was a well-intentioned helping hand for Ethiopian famine victims. To that aid, an all-star ensemble of artists comprising a cross-section of American artists, mostly pop, rock, and soul, sang the title track, initially solo bits with artists like co-writers Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Rogers, and Stevie Wonder, before they all sung in unison. While this song helped me identify this unhip guy who was who, back in the day when he was struggling to choose what to listen to, in retrospect, this sounds more like a seven minute Pepsi jingle that went to #1 on the charts and won the Grammy for Best Single.

As for the other songs, most don't come close to the usual oeuvre of the artists concerned. Most of all, what relevance do they have to the issue of starvation? Take off the "We Are The World" song and this might as well be an odds and sods albums of tracks by well-known 80's artists unreleased on their respective albums because they weren't up to scratch.

"If Only For The Moment, Girl" by Steve Perry, is nothing special and something that might've been a B-side on any of his Street Talk singles. And the Pointer Sisters' inject a muted dose of their sassy hokum on "Just A Little Closer." Call this one "I'm Not So Excited."

A live version of Bruce Springsteen's "Trapped," originally by Jimmy Cliff, follows. Keyboard fills and rhythm guitar are heard while the Boss sings the verses, then Max Weinberg's drums and the guitars rise to a crescendo as Springsteen sings the chorus. One of the better songs here.

Canada's own joint artist collaboration, billed as Northern Lights present "Tears Are Not Enough," which follows the same initial individual vocals followed by a joint singalong. Loverboy's Paul Dean does guitar, Bryan Adams collaborator Jim Vallance is on drums. Adams, Dan Hill, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Geddy Lee, Anne Murray, Aldo Nova, Jane Siberry, future Heart-producer Dalbello, Bruce Cockburn, Corey Hart, Mike Reno, John Candy (!!), and Burton Cummings are among the vocalists. This is shorter and has less carbonation than "We Are The World."

The only track that bears a direct bearing is Prince and the Revolution doing the sober "4 The Tears In Your Eyes." It's a simple song about Jesus and his healing, preaching, and helping others, helped by the vocal harmonies by Wendy and Lisa. If I was to put it on one of his albums for sound consistency, it'd have to be Parade. A different version of this ended up on his The Hits/B-Sides compilation.

Peter Cetera was still with Chicago when they did "Good For Nothing", this decent-sounding light rock number about feeling slighted for not receiving thanks for helping some people out seems contradictory for the purposes of giving on this album.

The studio version of "Trouble In Paradise" by Huey Lewis and the News can be found on their debut album. This is a live recording in February 1985 complete with Tower of Power horns and some great sax by Newsman John Colla.

After making her comeback with Private Dancer, Tina Turner does a song that wouldn't have been a C-side song, the plodding "Total Control." Kenny Rogers does the brisk "A Little More Love," again a worthy song, but lyrically, nothing to do with charity.

As the grandaddy of 80's charity rock albums, We Are The World definitely deserves that accolade. However, some things make this effort a bit suspect. The line "we're saving our own lives" has an implication that they're singing about their own salvation. Surely none of the artists here would experience starvation or meet those Ethiopians who are starving?

And a cogent critical observation Jackson Browne made also makes a point: "That's the problem with North America. We think we ARE the world." In other words, geopolitical bias.

Despite its charitable intentions, this effort mutes the usually leftist stance in rock by rightist corporate yuppie materialism.

5 out of 5 stars Bobby Hackett's Masterpiece in Circulation Again !!!!!.......2004-10-13

I am too young to have known these 2 LPs when they were "new."
A college friend of mine ( Hi, Paul ! ) got me into pre-Bop jazz, Big Band, and Swing...
As a fledgling trumpeter I wanted an example to follow,
of how to put across a melody- simply, but vitally...My friend
loaned me an old, scratched-up turquoise-label copy of IN A MELLOW MOOD.
I was tantalized enough to locate another copy in a second-hand shop.
We "pooled" both copies; we HAD to, in order to get a listenable version of each side...
And I learned about melody.

Song and mood... and a Goldilock's-porridge-"just right" mixture of
poetry and swing...Some tracks with full band accompaniment, some with a
George Shearing Quintet-style backup. The results are
very nearly too good...The kind of music
that "Muzak" often tried to imitate, sans success...This is it. "Carefree" is just that,
leaving wistfulness and sassiness in its wake. And in Webster's Dictionary, the entry for "lyricism" should read: SEE BOBBY HACKETT'S "Serenade in Blue," "Deep Night," "Mood Indigo," and "Flamingo." Not to mention "You're My Thrill" and the perfect "Rain" (track 22); just listen to Bobby's last, long-held note -
how, through sheer beauty of tone, he holds your interest and caps the tune
with just a touch of non-chalance.

One of the most beautiful "mood" albums in the history of jazz or pop.
(This album is both, like it or not.)

I understand the joy of other reviewers here- the ones
who grew up with this music and have come upon it again after so long.
SOFT LIGHTS is a more up-tempo album, perfect in its own way.
But IN A MELLOW MOOD is Bobby Hackett's masterpiece.
It doesn't get much better than this...
Buy it for your friends, your loved ones, your enemies,
BUY IT.

5 out of 5 stars The Mellowest of Hackett.......What a Horn!.......2002-07-23

We're talking the best......excluding his soulful solos on the Jackie Gleason Orchestra offerings. I had the vinyl of "In A Mellow Mood" for 44 years but had never obtained "Soft Lights"...my joy knows no bounds!

Bobby was certainly the most sophisticated and stylishly lyrical cornet player I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. I have other works of his (still on vinyl) but this is certainly his best of the light swing and romantic approach.

If you like standards, jazz, Bobby Hackett, the best lyrical horn to be heard, the romantic approach, light swing.......in any of or all of those combinations.......this IS a must!

3 out of 5 stars More Mellower, Please.......2001-07-01

Hackett is a wonderful trumpet player, but the Soft Lights section is not the dreamy mellow music I wanted. On Soft Lights, he sounds more like a cross between a dixieland jazz player and a mood music player. His trumpet has a brighter sound than I would like, and I would prefer less use of trumpet mutes. The Mellow Mood section is more to my liking, but not as dreamy as the music he played on the Jackie Gleason recordings, which I prefer. Nonetheless, he is a great player, and if you like to hear a trumpet master, you'll enjoy his performances.

5 out of 5 stars SO GOOD TO HEAR THIS MUSIC AGAIN.......2001-03-24

I was a only boy of 11 when first hearing my uncle play "In a Mellow Mood". I just fell in love with the sound of Bobby Hackett. I continued to try and find the LP for over 20 years but Capital had stopped it's release. What a joy to discover it again. Thanks Capital/EMI. I bought my uncle a copy as well and he is soooo pleased with the memories it involkes. "All Through The Night" is my favorite. This is a Cole Porter tune not heard too often ...especially these days. Enjoy!!

I wonder if there's any chance of getting another of Bobby's albums released. It's called "Dream Awhile" on columbia It's Bobby at his best with pipe organ. A Great Album!!!

5 out of 5 stars Who says you can't swing with strings?.......2001-03-16

Soft Lights and Bobby Hackett was originally released as a 10 inch LP. After 12" LP's became the norm, Bobby went and recorded four addtional tracks to fill out the original album. This is one of the earliest examples of Hackett's "mature" style, with full facility and tone. And he swings like crazy with a string section consisting of four violas and a cello! This is some very tasteful jazz that you'll return to over and over. While it is normally described as "mood music," I take issue with that, as only a few of the cuts are ballads -- the majority of numbers are medium to up-tempo swing. The second album on this CD, in a Mellow Mood, is definitely more accurately described as mood music. But on this album there is no string section, but rather a reliance on reeds. Great playing of course, but ballads. My advice is to buy this CD while you can. Hackett's prime years with Capitol have only been available on vinyl until now, and there's no telling how long this CD will remain in release.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't Live Up to It's Title.......2000-04-18

I bought this C.D. I really enjoyed it, but too many movie blockbuster theme songs were missing. What happened to Tara's Theme from Gone With the Wind or Over the Rainbow from the Wizard of Oz. Of course, many titles are recognizable, but there has to be at least 5 songs I hadn't heard of before, over 10 songs that weren't definitive enough for me, and 5 or 6 songs that weren't sung by the singers that you most commonly here sing them! If you want some nice music that you might recognize, get this C.D., but if you are looking for a C.D. filled with the most memorable songs ever recorded from Hollywood's biggest films... I have to tell you to keep on looking!

4 out of 5 stars Good but 1 Missing.......2000-04-14

A good Compilation but the greatest film song of all time is Missing, Over the Rainbow. Now I'm not complaining The Man that got away is included but please this is one of the greatest songs of the 20th let alone the movies.
