This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Al Green was the first great soul singer in the 70's. Plenty of releases until today; yet he failed to release a better album than this, with another one called "I am still in love with you". These 2 albums stand apart from all the rest of his work.
This album definitely sets the standard of what we call today Smooth Soul.
If you are new to Al Green's work, this album next to "I am still in love with you", are the ones. You will not regret it.

Al Green's classic soul now newly remastered (no extra tracks) on his masterpiece "Call Me," sometimes known as "Come Back Home." His voice is sinuous, like a watersnake, and creeps up and through every obstacle like beautiful roses gilding a trellis. It breaks like the surf and it rolls on like a glacier, it can do anything he wants it to do. And he chalks up this gift to God.

Mournful, secular tunes like the heartbreaking "Ain't It Funny How Time Slips Away" meld here with the desperation that finally turns to bliss in "Jesus Is Waiting," so the contradictions of the gospel/R & B blend he pioneers all get resolved during the course of one LP. Some of the tracks are slightly extended past their natural stopping point, a 70s device pioneered by Isaac Hayes and others in the Stax/Volt stable, but if you like extended trills and groans and gasps ad infinitum, you'll scream when Al Green wants you to because he is the man!

Best Christmas Album.......2007-02-15

This is a great set. The first cd has all of the wonderful traditional songs, and are nice when the fire is on or just the tree lights are on. The second cd is great when you want more upbeat modern music after getting tired of the first! We have lots of Christmas CDs, but this set gets more play because of the great combination.

The new Christmas music drove most of my family crazy except for one song. Santa clause is coming to town was changed to hood in a spot and they loved that but preferred the classical Christmas music on disc 2.

Granted that depends on your tastes. Your 10 to 12 year old daughter will probably love some of these tracks. However, this compilation comes nowhere near the 1st one. It's not bad and there are some "standards" on here by Elton John, Wham, Gloria Estefan and the Waitresses (which have the best tune in this set). It's all over the map, artist wise. It just seems to me that there wasn't much thought put into this compilation.

Great remaster of a classic blue-grass-country-rock fusion album.......2007-03-24

This is the album that bridged the boundaries between country, rock, blue-grass and jazz in the most perfectly realized way possible. In the final analysis, it's the special vibe of this album that sets it apart from other blue-grass/rock fusion albums. What Betts and gang seem to be wordlessly communicating as a subtext to all the music is a bond between different generations of musicians from the South that's created solely from their dedication to being free spirits no matter what different paths they might have taken to get there. This is not just a foot-stomping backwoods party album. There's a completely laid-back lack of rigidity, a beautiful melodicism and deep romanticism that could only come from Betts' leadership and the hippie legacy he brings from the Allman Brothers Band. There's philosophy and deep meditation behind this music that communicates very intensely even if it was only 'the spirit of the times' that was subconsciously affecting the proceedings.

The remastered album sounds fantastic. I played this one back to back with Greg Allman's classic "Laid Back" (remastered by the same people and released at the same time as the "Highway Call" remaster here) and the recording quality and production and the way the remastering brings it out on both just blew me away. I wonder if the musicians heard themselves sound so good on the studio playback monitors back then! If you want to be even more impressed, put some mikro-smooth polish from mapleshade audio products on the CD to eliminate laser jitter and you will be knocked out of your seat at how great the tones created by these master musicians 33 years ago sound today!

Table Setter.......2007-02-19

Highway Call is the album that set the table for generations of songwriters and players. Dickey took six songs and set them up with electric and acoustic instruments so the balance was a little on the country/bluegrass side. This album doesn't need a review. Dickey heard The Band and figured he knew what was up. Just listen to it and see how so many other albums found their sound. Within three years the balance swung a little back to rock, and then the whole country was into it. Every song on this album cooks. Vassar Clemmons comes into the light. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was listening. No one ever heard this album, but every one knows it.

I've loved this album for 30 years --had the LP in high school and bought the CD a few years back ---although hadn't heard it in 20 years it was still as good as I remembered ---Chuck Leavell's contributions are brilliant and what can you say about Vassar Clements ---the only shame is that Dickey hasn't put out a lot more material like this ----

Funk Beyond The Call Of Duty, released the same year as A Real Mother For Ya , was his most hard-edged release to date. Not only were the grooves more intense, but he also upped the quotient of gritty blues guitar soloing. Despite being released so close to A Real Mother, the album managed to make it to #20 on the Black Albums chart and the lower reaches of the Pop chart.

The title track of this album is a true 70's funk classic.It's got it all-great groove,blaring clavinet and horns and Johnny Guitar's yowling vocals.And it just get's better from there as "It's About The Dollar Bill",the brilliant "It's A Damn Shame" and "Barn Door" all deliver the same kind of goods filled with Johnny's good humored style.And for once this CD features bonus cuts that are NOT featured in some other version on the album-the odd vocal groove "Can You Handle It" and the unique "Virgina's Pretty Funky"-a cross between R&B and some wacked out Broadway musical.Just a terrific funk reissue that deserves emmediate addition to your collection

Maria's second career............2005-07-23

Much like Bonnie Raitt's second wind with NICK OF TIME in 1989,
Maria gave us Louisiana Love Call in the early 90's and it to
began a new phase and musical appreciation few can match to this
day. Maria and Bonnie both got attention back in the early 70's
with the musical variety they gave us on their albums. Here it
is 2005 and both ladies are still stronger than ever with up
coming releases. This collection is full of prime Maria and
well worth finally being able to obtain again. Great CD!!

Wow, what a singer! I want to marry that woman!

First, I'll admit that I wasn't wild about some of the tracks on this album. But the rest ranged from excellent to great. Maria Muldaur's voice makes me really feel the hot, sultry, lazy air of the bayou, even way up here in the SF Bay Area. If I close my eyes I can smell it all and see the Cajun Moon overhead.

Best of Me, Louisiana Love Call, and especially Cajun Moon are among the hottest, ... songs I have ever heard, and Ms. Muldaur is the reason why.

Blues and New Orleans-style jazz just don't get much better than this. In Louisiana Love Call, Maria Muldaur pays homage to the rhythms and sounds that have made New Orleans one of the world's great centers of music. And what a tribute it is! Maria's voice, which has only improved with age, makes this album shine.

This CD is currently out of print because Black Top Records has gone out of business. This is unfortunate, because there isn't a single bad track on the album. Fortunately, you can still buy it used, though it is getting hard to come by. Maybe one of the major labels will pick up the rights to Louisiana Love Call and reissue it. One can only hope so - Maria Muldaur is one of the finest jazz and blues singers of our age, and this is one of her best albums. Enjoy!

Crosby just doesn't get it. Maria is at her best and the best of the genre her in her swamp blues here. Great stuff. Her other recordings over the five years since don't hold a candle to this one. Telarc should be so lucky as to get her to sound this good again. I wish they could. She did in live performance last year.

I have Maria Muldaur's music from 1970 and her jug band days right up through her blues in 1999. This CD is one of the best.

Mr. Crosby seems to miss the fact that there is great beauty in Maria Muldaur's voice. It is both sultry and beautiful, and yes a little rough around the edges. Louisiana Love Call IS Louisiana and New Orleans - sultry, beautiful and VERY rough around the edges. She captures the feelings of the place very well.
