5 out of 5 stars Ben & Sweets - The sound of jazz!.......2007-03-12

It's a wonder that Ben Webster and Harry "Sweets" Edison didn't record more albums in this format, but we are quite fortunate to have this classic. It has all the essential qualities of great jazz: relaxed, swinging, soulful and well executed. Edison shines on the blues and medium bounce songs, while Webster plays some of the most romantic saxophone ever heard on the ballads. Hank Jones, whose playing adapted to both the swing and bebop worlds equally, accompanies and solos with masterful elegance. The recording quality is excellent as well, in keeping with the fine Columbia products of the era.

5 out of 5 stars Fully pleasant 40 minutes of sax, trumpet and rhythm..........2003-11-28

As the CD booklet says, this 1962 studio session paired Webster and Edison, late in their careers, to record their brand of mainstream jazz. Each started in the 1930's. Each played with a giant bandleader, one with Basie, one with Duke. Their style evolved into the bop, hard bop and third stream movements of the '40's and 50's and 60's. This disc mixes swing with ballads, and lets Ben and Sweets alternate solos. It's all good. For a person like me, who wants a jazz collection with at least one CD by everyone who made an impact between WW II and the JFK assassination, this item serves as a fine introduction to Webster and Edison. After hearing this, I am inclined to pursue more tracks by each guy.

5 out of 5 stars ahhhhhh!!!!!!.......2003-11-06

This CD really cooks. Ben Webster's silky smooth tenor is a perfect foil for Harry Edison's muted trumpet. Good support from the bass player too. I listen to this CD over and over again without tiring of it. This is a desert island pick for sure.

5 out of 5 stars Two of the best ever, still gettin' down into the '60s.........2003-09-12

The title track, "Better Go" reminds me a whole lot that this CD sets up a lot like "Buck and Buddy - Blowin' the Blues"; but then comes Ben Webster swooping in on "How Long Has This Been Going On" and I'm immediately reminded how much better of a CD this is - no disrespect to Buck (one of my all-time favorites) or Buddy. But, my God, what a beautiful pair Webster and Edison make! 'Sweets' rips up the opener and right away shows that he is in top form, with George Duvivier laying the 4/4 down. "Kitty", track three, has Hank Jones comp-ing nicely over Edison, then "the Brute" blows 'em away...leaving Hank to do the best he can. "My Romance" finds Webster romantic, indeed, and I can almost hear the string orchestra on "Ballads" in the back of my head. Just beautiful. Jones opens "Did You Call Her Today" with a nice Duke/Count double tribute, and 'Sweets' rides over the "Mellowtone-like" composition first, besting Ben this time, but not by much. Jones then gets off his best solo of the session, again comp-ing nicely to the finish. 'Sweets' closes out with the ballad "Embracable You". Clarence Johnston deserves a mention on drums due to perfect backing on everything, especially this one - he comes in halfway through and doesn't disturb 'Sweets' one bit. All in all, a real All-Star date for a real All-Star pair.

5 out of 5 stars Masters of swing.......2003-02-08

Ben Webster and Sweets Edison in a small group setting that displays their absolute mastery of swing to perfection. These fine musicians are backed by a terrific rhythm section including Hank Jones on piano, George Duvivier on bass and Clarence Johnston on drums. The cuts alternate between swinging uptempo numbers and beautiful ballads but always retain the element of swing that are the signatures of these alumni of the Ellington and Basie bands. Ben Webster plays ballads like no on else and Sweets Edison really sounds wonderful here especially on the bluesy "Kitty" (Track 3). This may be the best track on the CD but the rest is all good.

5 out of 5 stars How lucky can you get..........2006-12-20

How lucky can you get? This album has a collection of tunes that most Supersuckers fans have scoured the globe (and the internet) to obtain! B-sides, rarities, and covers that will have you singin along at the top of your lungs in no time! Would you say that your songs are mainly about liquor, women, drugs, and killing? YES!!!

5 out of 5 stars Evil tastes pretty good.......2005-11-29

Wow, this makes it convenient to be a rabid 'suckers collector. I have most of these on those "rare, fan-club only, 7' colored vinyl" versions, but as DK would say, "Give me Convenience, or Give me Death." I love the glow-in-the-dark vinyl I picked up of this release, and I can't recommend it enough for anyone who hasn't heard Jerry Reed, the Commodores, and, yes, Outkast covered by the mighty Supersuckers. A great trip exploring the vast inspirations that motivate Eddie Spaghetti and Co. Please buy this and encourage the Supersuckers to dig further in their vaults and produce a "Devil's Food 2."

5 out of 5 stars DEVILS FOOD!!!!!!! If you dont dig this, theres something wrong with you.......2005-11-04

Usually im a bit sceptical of comps which are a collection of 'b-sides & rareties' because it often becomes apparent exactly why these tracks were left off albums....

Fortunately theres none of that here. Theres a lot of gems on this album and no real filler. It starts off with the fantastic & blistering Gato Negro but from there the quality doesnt drop off.. Highlights include The Suckers covers of Outkasts 'Hey Ya', Electric Frankensteins "Teenage Shutdown", and plenty of seldom heard rip-roaring originals like "Can Pipe" and "Team Man"..The country fans arent ignored either with the album featuring country versions of the suckers classics "Born With a Tail" and "Doublewide" and a cover of "Eastbound and Down" which is so good it will have you singing along even if your not a country fan.

All in all its a damn fine album and makes you wonder what other gems are lurking in the Supersucker Vault..

If you havent heard the supersuckers in concert you absolutely must get this cd or you will be very sorry, now and for the rest of your life.

4 out of 5 stars The newest $#!& from the Supersuckers.......2005-05-13

This collection mixes some classic songs, some older songs redone, and some never before heard songs. Whether you are a new listener, or a die-hard fan, this CD is thoroughly enjoyable.

Although this is not the best work of the Supersuckers, it is a great resource for those interested from hearing the Supersuckers live, or being recommended by a friend.

4 out of 5 stars All-purpose trumpet player yet one of a kind........2007-06-08

Harry Edison had such an inimitable trumpet "voice" that musicians of all schools welcomed his presence on a session even though nothing about his playing reflects the bebop revolution of Dizzy, Bird, Bud and Monk. You can hear him on a date exchanging choruses with Diz and Roy Eldridge; two years after the release of this album, Granz featured Sweets as the only trumpet player on "Jazz Giants '58" (out of print but worth the search) with Mulligan (a huge Sweets fan), Getz (more Prez-like than ever), Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown and Belson; he can be heard on a couple of sides as a frontline mate to Bird's foremost disciple, Sonny Stitt; he made two sparkling CDs with the hugely underrated tenor great, Spike Robinson.

He was one of the last trumpet players to see mutes (not simply the harmon mute favored by Miles) as integral with the sound of the horn, which could have many different "tonal personalities." He plays with humor, lyricism and, if required to, ample technique. But economy is his game--sometimes he'll "ride" on a single note for close to an entire chorus, bending and shaping it every which way (in fact, it's hard to believe he wasn't an influence on a "modernist" like Kenny Dorham, who occasionally would do much the same). Sweets does have a few trademark, signature "licks" that he has a tendency to use more than necessary, making it too easy at times for a listener to guess what's coming. The other side of the coin is that there's no mistaking who's playing trumpet.

I'm surprised this session swings as hard as it does, since Verve's "house pianist," Oscar Peterson, has been replaced by Jimmy Rowles, an adept player but more minimalist, even, than Sweets. Give much of the credit to Al Stoller, a drummer Sinatra preferred to Buddy Rich. The program is a great mix of jazz and pop standards ("How Deep Is the Ocean" is taken too fast for my taste, but the medium-tempo pace of "Willow Weep for Me" is a welcome touch to this frequently dragging torch number.)

It's Edison's date, but Ben Webster is no less impressive, at the very top of his game. In fact, were it not for the title, you might have difficulty deciding which of the two is in charge.

5 out of 5 stars YES, I agree: definately Sweets' finest.......2006-10-25

I once chanced to be present during a Lockjaw Davis session for Pablo--Jaws played "Sweet and Lovely," I recall. You can imagine the awe of seeing Sweets arriving with Clark Terry. Anyway, I've heard a lot of Sweets--from his Basie days on through his Verve years on to his Pablo sessions. But I've always felt that SWEETS was Sweets at his best--his finest session. There's something about his tone, his groove; he's really relaxed and often comes up with ideas, freshly different from his signature lick stuff. Just check out "How Deep is the Ocean." (Want to hear some other extrordinary Sweets? Get BUDD JOHNSON AND THE FOUR BRASS GIANTS on OJC CD. Why that album isn't a big seller behooves me.)

This SWEETS recording is a little heavy with reverb, but it's in the original and Verve was wise not to add any fake stereo reverb to it. By the way, I'm noticing Verve is getting better at reissuing; they still can't match the meticulous Japanese, but the domestic-issue Verve audio has been greatly improving, with just a tadd of harshness now and then at about 1000Hz. That's probably because I no longer see Richard Siedel's name among the production credits: GOOD RIDDANCE, you bum; you've messed up too many classic Verves with excruciating boosted highs and fake stereo reverb! Thankfully, for this issue Verve reproduced the original cover and liner, and you get a full-sized repro folded inside the digipak.

Another joy of this CD is Jimmy Rowles' brief but tasty piano solos. You know, this session's vibe would've been so much different with Oscar Peterson at the piano--it might've sounded like just another Verve. Why, oh, why was Peterson, and his sometimes annoyingly busy accompaniment, chosen by Norman Granz to play on so many Verve's!? (yeah, I know: that "thousand note" show off, Tatum wish-he-was sold lots of records for Granz). Well, I gotta say, Granz chose all the right cats for SWEETS, making for one the most beautifully swingin' Verves ever, owing in big part to the layed back presence of drummer Alvin Stoller. Ben Webster... Ben sounds great as always, but for some reason, he just doesn't move me on this date. (Although BILL HARRIS AND FRIENDS, an OJC CD, is not popularly known as a Ben Webster date, some of the best Ben you'll ever hear was recorded on that 1955 Fantasy session--every solo's a gem; perfection.) Joe Mondragon added so much to the many, many west coast sessions he played on. His huge bass sound is captured fully here; when you play this CD through your speakers, you'll really feel the bass. Finally, you may find that the star of SWEETS is actually guitarist Barney Kessell. Man, his lines! So creative, inventive.

Track 4, "Studio Call," is ringing through my mind as I write. Love that tune; nice to hear Sweets' rich, open trumpet singing out on this one.

I'm ol' Mike DiMartino in Rochester, NY. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Sweets and The Brute.......2006-04-30

In 1956-57, Sweets Edison and Ben Webster teamed up to cut two albums for the Verve label; both are superb, though this one might be a tad better. Everything works marvelously here, and Ben and Sweets play at peak form. Things kick off with the fast blues HOLLERING AT THE WATKINS, an Edison original, and immediately we know we're in for something special. WILLOW WEEP FOR ME gets an excellent treatment with Sweets playing tightly muted trumpet (as he does on most of the tracks), and LOVE IS HERE TO STAY is another beautiful ballad track. Another up-tempo blues is OPUS 711, and it's one of the highlights on the album. Rhythm support is solid in Jimmy Rowles (p) Joe Mondragon (b) and Alvin Stoller (d), and Barney Kessel's bluesy guitar adds much to the album's flavor. A terrific mainstream jazz album from the mid-1950s - definitely worth a prominent spot in anyone's collection.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent music.......2005-05-21

This is an excellent disc from Harry 'Sweets' Edison at the peak of his career. There are several memorable songs - Used to be Basie, How Deep is the Ocean, Walkin' With Sweets, Studio Call - and plenty of extended solos.

I would, however, rate this album just a notch below The Swinger/Mr. Swing double CD from 1958. It's still highly recommended music.

5 out of 5 stars Sweets' Best Ever.......2005-04-14

Right now -- April 13, 2005 -- Amazon shows no tracks or personnel for this CD. Most people who have heard of Harry "Sweets" Edison think he only played for Basie in the late 1930s and accompanied Sinatra on his Nelson Riddle recordings in the 1950s. But he was much more.

I have no idea why this CD took so long to emerge, but this is the finest Sweets recording ever and one of the very best small group swing (mainstream) recordings of the 1950s that were so fertile for good jazz. No hyperbole here, I promise.

I purchased the LP in 1957 (was on Columbia Clef then) and I still preserve it carefully. Apart from Sweets it has Ben Webster on tenor sax, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Joe Mondragon on bass, and Alvin Stoller on drums. The track names I recall off the top of my head are "Hollerin' At The Watkins", "Willow Weep for Me", plus another eight or so. Does the CD contain more? -- I really hope so! The swing is powerful and clean and the solos have a form and a structure -- mainly blues-based -- that place melody and "voicing" ahead of the complex chord changes and harmonies (an oxymoron!) that have done so much to remove jazz from public appeal this past 35 years. The three main front line players (tpt/tnr/pno) play among the best work of their careers.

For other great "Sweets" recordings, hear him with Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges on "Back to Back" and "Side By Side."

I suggest you get this CD whatever your age.

4 out of 5 stars Great Drumming! If you thought Bonham was good, wait till you hear this!.......2005-11-29

The version I have was made in the EU and comes in a mini-lp replica sleeve which is a little flimsy; I guess they don't make 'em as well as the Japanese do but still this is remastered quite well and so the sound quality is quite good. I used to think that Led Zeppelin's Bonham was pretty good witness his work on "Moby Dick" but heck, this guy Buddy is even better! I can think of no better essential listening than this for any aspiring drummer. I was also impressed by the guitarist who plays some really tasty licks here. Didn't think too much about Sweet's contribution which seemed a little subdued. Overall and for this price, a great bargain; recommended for all drum fans out there.

5 out of 5 stars An awesomely swingin' lp.......2004-11-19

Definitely pick this up. There. I said it. Cut to the chase and make no bones about it. You got Buddy Rich, you got Harry Edison. You also got Barney Kessel laying down some of the sweetest guitar licks you've ever heard. Do you really need any more convincing? Ok, this is a limited-edition release. Sure, it sounds like a long time off when you hear that it will be around until September 2006, but that will come and go before you know it. And, why put off for that long enjoying this beautiful music? So, do yourself a favor and just get this already. For this price, you reallly cannot go wrong. These cats are in top form here and do not stop from start to finish. Truly a "highly recommended" release if ever there was one.

1 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE-SOUNDING DISC; OPT FOR THE UK '98 IMPORT.......2007-06-06

The audio on this disc obviously comes from the old LP-EQ'd master. It sounds AWFUL.

If you are looking to pick up this album, get the 1998 remastered U.K. CD, which is night-and-day better than this edition.

Also, the import has two additional bonus tracks that do not appear on the U.S. CD.

The import is now OOP, and is more expensive, but it's worth it.

Just be careful to confirm that this edition isn't mis-listed under the higher-priced import. The correct catalog number for the import is 540 807-2. You would be wise to e-mail the seller and confirm that before you buy.

Link to the 1998 remaster of Sweets From A Stranger.

4 out of 5 stars Undervalued Greatness.......2003-11-19

How is it possible that Squeeze are virtually unknown anywhere besides England?Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford are in the top 10 songwriters the world has ever produced and are needed of a deserved revival of their 80's brilliance."Sweets from a Stranger" despite not entering squeeze's top 5 albums bears plenty of their impeccable songcraft and writerly musical flourishes."His House Her Home" is beautiful beyond words and tracks like "I've returned","I can't Hold on" or "Black Coffee in Bed" retain most of Squeeze's charm.
If you like classic songwriting(and Squeeze were once compared with the Beatles)and also the colourful touches of artists such as XTC or Elvis Costello squeeze might be your band.

5 out of 5 stars For Young's sound.......2002-04-15

Lester Young sounds so tired here, still he is the reason most people would buy this CD, and they would be right.

Like Billie Holiday, Young's personality was transparent - everything he felt showed up in his sound. Here he is tired, introspective, disillusioned. When he plays the beautiful solo on "Its the talk of the town" he tells a story as no other musician I know. Technical skill becomes irrelevant, it is just a story being told. It is a sad story, told by a beautiful person.

There are many musicians who could swing, play fast or slow, and do it sounding good. But there is only one Lester Young, and to hear him in a relaxed studio atmosphere with a good sound quality is a rare experience. This CD also offers harry Edison in top form, Buddy Rich in a setting he thrives at (unlike the session with Parker and Gillespie, where he was clearly unfit), and Oscar Peterson who ALWAYS sounds good.

4 out of 5 stars A solid small group swing session (bill_faust@fitch.com).......2000-03-03

Young and Edison go way back. Both played in the late 30's/early 40's Basie band and in fact Young was the one who gave Edison his nickname "Sweets" when he first joined Basie in 1937. This is a solid small group swing session originally recorded in 1955. Edison is at the top of his game here having left Basie in 1950 to become one of the most sought-after studio musicians in Los Angeles. In fact, this session was recorded in the middle of his Sinatra period when he was backing the Chairman for Capitol records' "swingin" LPs. The rhythm section is first class - basically Oscar Peterson's trio plus Buddy Rich who most people associate with big bands but actually was one of the most adept small ensemble swing drummers ever. The only disappointment here is Young who sounds a bit flat, tired and uninspired on most charts. But this was recorded only 4 years prior to his death and so health may have played a role. Nonetheless, its a great disc with a nice collection of blues and standards that shouldn't be overlooked.

    4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable!.......2006-04-17

Yoko Ishida's music is fun! No great elaboration on my part. Her voice and the accompanying music create a pleasent relaxing atmosphere. I might not understand all the words, but there is a cheerfulness to the sound that lightens the office or home. BUY IT! YOU'LL LIKE IT!

4 out of 5 stars Appropriately titled album!.......2005-05-03

I recently purchased the anime, Ai Yori Aoshi and it's sequel series Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi. I've fallen in love with the music, especially, Eternal Flower. I recently attended the AnimeBoston Convention and was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that Yoko Ishida was present and would be performing. I was simply blown away as she opened up her performance with Eternal Flower. I could not believe how perfect she sounded live. It just gave strengthened evidence of her singing talent.

She truly has a sweet angelic voice that matches well with the musical pieces she uses. She can easily sing the catchy upbeat tunes like "Sugar Baby Love" or more moving emotional pieces like "Thankful". I tend to love more of the slow emotional pieces and can't say enough about her captivating voice. This album does mix things up well with both types. Highly recommended for any fan, anime-related or not.

5 out of 5 stars Simply delicious album of pop by Ishida.......2005-02-02

Having gotten into series anime as opposed to one-offs, I noticed that some of the theme songs were sung by Yoko Ishida, Ishida Yoko-san, if you're Japanese. It turns out she has a CD out of some of those songs as well as other numbers. They're basically lovable pop, nothing wacky or loopy like Puffy Amiyumi or Shonen Knife, but Ishida's voice is crystal clear, sweet and soothing all at once. All but one of the songs are in Japanese, but fortunately, there are both Romanized Japanese and English lyrics to the songs.

"Spring Field" is engaging pop with a grinding rock guitar that's kind of like a poppified Alanis or Avril, while "Believing" rock with a slight bit of funk thrown in, is about a relationship in transition; whether the couple will meet again is in the air. "Do you remember the temperature of our connected hands?" Ishida asks at once point.

"White Destiny" is the opening theme to the anime series Pretear-The New Story of Snow White. A techno anthem with nice synth effects and a pulsing backbeat, this is one of Sweets' delicious moments. It's a positive song, beginning with how the main character, the heroine Himeno, will "start the snow of happiness worldwide" and how she realizes the place of warm love is in one's heart, and so she'll "fill up everyone with a beautiful heart like snow."

"Proof of Life," the ending theme to "Anime TV," is an upbeat but introspective pop song, where she wonders what the purpose of existence is, what the number one happiness is. An existential turn is given when she decides "I wonder why people live/I'll accept any fate and lonesome journey, if they are all to meet you." The difficulty of life is exemplified when she also yearns to live a life without regret but can't go forward.

"Eternal Flower" or "Towa No Hana" is the opening theme to the first Ai Yori Aoshi series, and is a sweet synth ballad with moving strings, and is the other big favourite here. It encompasses the long love the main character, Aoi-chan, had for Kaoru, her first and only love-"More than anyone, more than all I'm staring at you/This feeling for eternity" and "Your smile will become my flower, for sure..." I keep playing this over whenever I'm not watching Ai Yori Aoshi.

The upbeat "Get Away 2AM" tells of a relationship that seems doomed to end, where the woman is walking alone with the song as her thoughts, while the lush swinging Pet Shop Boys meets Swing Out Sister mélange of the life and love-affirming "Fragile Flower."

"Sugar Baby Love" which is the opening theme to the cutesy "A Little Snow Sugar Fairy" series, is done both in Japanese and English renditions. Combining the dreamy ambience of the Cranberries' "Dreams," Beatles-style pop, and majestic synths, it's a song of a repressed love, where the title love is "an unrequited love and painful night." Another winning anthem, with the nice monologue "I love you, but when I see your eyes, my lips get frozen." However, there are different lyrics in the English version where she basically sings "if you love someone, don't think twice" about it.

Of nice ballads, Ishida scores with "Truth's Door" or "Shinjistu No Tobira," the opening theme to the Gunparade March series and "Thankful," another heartfelt love ballad with a slow synth drum backbeat.

Released here in July 2003, this album missed having another song by Ishida, the theme to Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi, "Takaramono" or "Treasure," which is one of the sweetest and tear-jerking songs she's ever done. Most of these songs are indeed takaramono. Ishida is simply talented, cute, and has the luck to sing the themes to some of the best Japanese anime series, as well as songs that could be theme songs or singles in their own right. Here's hoping she puts out another album of sweets, or as they say in Japanese, "amaimono" soon. And to Ishida-san, "kono arubamu wa tanoshikatta. Arigato" In English, "this album was enjoyable. Thank you."

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely stunning. ........2003-11-24

I had the pleasure of seeing Miss Ishida perform live at Anime Central 2003. When I left that concert, her sweet voice and amazing stage presence made me crave more of her beautiful music.

I was a great fan of Para Para MAX, and I thought that her cheerful voice brought those dance tracks to life. But in Sweets, I feel you hear so much more of what Yoko is capable. From cheerful to upbeat, to soft and melancholy, this CD has it all. I absolutely adored it!

    5 out of 5 stars Sweet indeed!.......2003-07-08

Yoko Ishida has a solid tone, fine intonation and a very pleasant voice that makes the enjoyable tunes chosen for this collection such a joy to listen to. The only thing I would have wished for was the inclusion of the anime version of the Gunparade March opening theme along with the album version. But regardless, I look forward to more performances and recordings from Yoko Ishida.
