Rock bastardizations of classical music are as old as Kim Fowley's--and ELP's--Tchaikovsky tweaking "Nutrocker." But classical interpretations of rock music have generally been something of a high-wire act. While most pop fare has strong melodic foundations for the soloist to build from, Christopher O'Riley has challenged himself here with the catalog of Radiohead, one of modern rock's most acclaimed--and texturally complex--bands. O'Riley's insightful gifts for interpretation (which have previously enlightened everything from Stravinsky to P.D.Q. Bach) produce a hypnotic, emotionally compelling listening experience here; O'Riley is a huge Radiohead fan, and that love courses through everything from the dreamy, bittersweet title track through the brooding loveliness of "Let Down." Radiohead's stock in trade is dense, multi-layered music that leans heavily on electronic processing for its moody sonic atmospherics; O'Riley's evokes those complex textures with but a judicious use of the sustain peddles, a deft use of dissonance (as on "Knives Out"), and a rhythmically anxious left hand. Call them etudes for the post-modern age if you will, but O'Riley's performances here largely achieve what all great interpretations strive for: New insight and enlightenment. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Looking Forward, Looking Back.......2007-03-02

Ove the last decade or so, Radiohead has created some of the most complex and futuristic rock music out there, and I wondered if a solo pianist could really capture their essence on a single instrument. However, O'Riley does a marvelous job, and brilliantly conveys the melancholy, mysterious, and introspective qualities of Radiohead's music. His renditions of "Fake Plastic Trees" and "Let Down" are particularly powerful. What I really loved about this cd is while I could follow all of the songs he played, at times I felt like I was listening to an breathtaking piano sonata by Mozart or Beethoven, and even a Nocturne by Chopin. Overall, this is a faithful interpretation by an excellent musician who honors one of the greatest bands in recent times, while also paying hommage to his musical heritage. This cd is a must for even the casual Radiohead fan or anyone who enjoys the piano.

4 out of 5 stars Music Lovers.......2007-02-17

i love almost all kinds of music. piano and radiohead really works for me, i liked the whole thing. if you can get into some piano, you can get into this cd. if you dig radiohead, get into it purely because someone took the time to put some awesome songs into yet another form for more audiences to get into. its beautiful. thats all there is to say.

5 out of 5 stars a transcription worthy of Franz Liszt.......2006-12-08

This is a beautiful recording. Try playing it for music loving frends who would never listen to a band like Radiohead. They won't believe it when you tell them the source of this richly textured heartbreakingly melodic tour de force. I'm in my late 50's and love Mahler, Sibelius, and Beethoven. I also love Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, John Fahey and Wilco. Good music can come along in any time and I'm glad that Christopher O'Riley loves Radiohead and transcribed it for solo piano; he's missed nothing in the process. If your not choked-up by the end of this CD, music must not be your thing.

3 out of 5 stars Sleepytime music.......2006-03-27

Being the total Radiohead fanatic that I am, I decided to pick this up when it came out... perhaps a fresh take on their music would breath some life back into the songs I've been listening into the ground, I thought. So I took it up into the mountains with me and listened to it for a bit. My reaction to it now is similar to then: it's a dreamy if somewhat insubstantial collection of vaguely familiar tunes.

All of the playing on this disc is superb on the technical level... obviously O'riley is a top notch classical performer. The arrangements are a mixed bag, though. There are some amazing renditions on here - see the impressionistic 'Everything In Its Right Place' and the melancholy coffee house arrangement of 'Knives Out'. Some others are also quite listenable, including 'Subterranean Homesick Alien', 'Exit Music', 'Bulletproof', and 'Motion Picture Soundtrack'. However, the upbeat pop tunes have difficult translating to solo piano. the Pablo Honey tunes suffer the worst here, and feel slightly unnatural; perhaps like a classical pianist paying tribute to a favorite band, rather than the more personal adaptations that make the 'Knives Out' arrangement so effective.

Overall, a nice cd to put on in the background when you're reading or settling in to bed, but Radiohead fanatics beware - don't expect anything that lives up to the band's immense standards.

5 out of 5 stars Nice sound.......2006-02-17

I didn't even know Radiohead songs...but now I've listened to the originals and can hear how O'Riley captures the songs on the piano. This is a great album.

THE ONLY THING WRONG WITH THIS DISC-THERES NOT ENOUGH SONGS. AWSOME CD. CANT WAIT FOR ANOTHER.

4 out of 5 stars A violinist with a niche.......2004-10-06

Jerald Daemyon seems to have found a void of sorts for the violin - R&B/light jazz fusion. Nothing spectacular about his playing per se, but his arrangements and musical ideas are uniquely his own. Daemyon wrote all but 2 of the 9 tunes and arranged and produced all of them, playing keyboards and programming the drums in the process. I particularly enjoyed his cover of the old Stylistics tune "You Make Me Feel Brand New". One criticism I would offer is the overuse of delay on the violin. At times it makes you wonder if it's designed to cover up some of his technical deficiencies as it doesn't really seem to add anything to the music.

5 out of 5 stars Think about Daemyon.......2003-06-21

This young man is phenomenal. I wish he had more material. I look forward to hearing from him in the future.

There have really been very few artists who've came out the past few years that have really made a great impression on music. Norah Jones has been one of those who have shined on that trademak, with her Jazzy somber mellow songs. Thinking about You, the first single from her hyped third record, Not Too Late, keeps the signature flow from her music flowing swiftly, without losing the feeling of her songs. I like this song because it speaks from the heart, and it is very sophisticated. I really hope that the next single from the record is just as good as this one. It is one of the best songs on the radio right now.

Great coda to Norah's new album, a quiet little song with a barroom piano and witty lyric that would've fit nicely at the end of Not Too Late.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music!.......2007-02-01

I am so happy and satisfy with this cd that has grear music, I have always been a big fan of freestyle music and never thought I would be able to find this kind of cd's.

5 out of 5 stars thinking of Cynthia............2006-01-28

This is the best Cynthia cd. Now Cynthia is a freetyle queen and always has been anyone from Miami or New York can confim it! This is where freestyle began, but technically it started in New York. Then eventually also based out of Miami w/ a different sound. There is a difference between N.Y. and Miami sounding freestyle. However, this cd appeals to both. The VERY 1st single was "How I Love Him" f/k7, also known as Kayel, lead singer of the ever-popular freestyle group TKA. other hit releases include: "Like A Star", "If I Had The Chance", "Thinking About You", "I Never Said". All which are great songs and of course thier is another personal favorite of mine...."Save Your Love For Me". There's of course other great hits but you'll have to discover them for yourself!...ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars Hot Tracks.......2003-06-13

Cynthia came back strong in 1999 with "Thinking About You". This is her best album so far in my book. Cynthia's voice has gotten stronger and smoother, next to Judy Torres, Cynthia is my favourite Freestyle diva. My favourite tracks "I Never Said", "Like A Star" & "Thinking About You".

5 out of 5 stars BEST FREESTYLE ARTIST ALBUM!.......2000-10-17

This is the best cd i ever got that was freestyle. Cynthia sings freestyle, and her whole cd is like almost all freestyle wit some tyte beats. My favorite song on the cd is IF I HAD THE CHANCE that had a tight beat, and so did THINKING ABOUT YOU! Like other artists liek ANGELINA, they dont compare to CYNTHIA because her whole cd is good and probably only has 1 or 2 songs that arnt. Overall i give this a 5 star because its tight, shes koo so its all good. Compare this to JOCELYN and BUFFY and all them other freestyles they dont come close to bein better than CYNTHIA unless they come up with some tight shiet. Go out to the cd store and grab her album! and anotehr thing it downst sound like 80s music like other freestyles.

5 out of 5 stars One true Diva.......2000-10-12

This goes to show that freestyle is not dead. This album shows how much she has grown w/ the music. The album is not totally just freestyle, she has a little r&b, house, latin, you name it. My favorite tracks are Thinking about you, Like a Star, and Ive never said. This a must for all freestyle lovers and a must for people that like dance music in general.

5 out of 5 stars Great Jazz Trombonist.......2001-09-25

Frank Rosolino was one of the greatest jazz trombonists, but he was not given many opportunities to record under his own name, especially in the last 20 years of his life. So this double CD (a reissue of the 1982 LP with 8 additional tracks, making 12 in all) is especially welcome. It caputures Frank in a relaxed club setting in Toronto, Canada in 1976. He is backed by an excellent Canadian trio of Ed Bickert, guitar, Don Thompson, bass, and Terry Clarke, drums. The trio plays behind the trombonist with subtle invention and shading. Bickert's solos and comping are marvellous, as is the interplay between Clarke and Thompson (who recorded the music with excellent sound).
But the star is Rosolino. FR was considered a be-bop trombonist, yet most of the tunes here are standards and range from ballad tempo to mid-tempo. They run from 8 to 14 minutes long, but Rosolino is so melodically inventive that you never lose interest in his improvisations. His tone is so strong and clear throughout the whole range of the horn, and his sustained high register passages are breath-taking. His chops were surely made of steel! 'Round Midnight from Disc 1 and Bluebird (Charlie Parker) from Disc 2 are alone worth the price of the CD. Highly recommended to lovers of jazz trombone and anyone who enjoys highly inventive, melodic improvisation on standard tunes.

Wow, I can't believe no one has reviewed this yet, and it's 2 years old now. If you happen to come across this, grab it! This was one of the best dance tracks of 2001. The Almighty Mix is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. They managed to combine some great 70's disco grooves with modern club synths, breakdowns, and a buildup that will have your hands in the air. A great upbeat, danceable track from the second it starts till it finishes. Jonathan Peters and Cruz and Bagz give it a harder edge, which is fine, but they lose sight of the upbeat nature of the song. Again, the Almighty mix is worth the price of admission.

    5 out of 5 stars A Billboard Number 1 Dance/Club Play Hit!.......2002-09-01

Gloria's debut single release for Logic Records went to the top of Billboard's Dance/Club Play chart in 2001. A cover of a 70s disco classic, the Queen of Disco, Gloria Gaynor, pulls it off again and had her first number 1 hit since "I AM WHAT I AM" in the early 80s. Gloria has spent most of the last ten years making her success in Europe with many platinum albums and singles. Last year she released, in Europe, to a big fanfare "LAST NIGHT" somewhat of a tribute to the new millenium. Unfortunately the label made a mistake and released the wrong version on the CD single in England and elsewhere and the song never gained any momentum. Now with LOGIC RECORDS Gloria seems to have a found a label that suits her to a G! "JUST KEEP THINKING ABOUT YOU" is to be featured on her new CD album, her first North American release in almost 20 years, September 10, 2002, "I WISH YOU LOVE" along with her current top ten hit (and still rising with a bullet) "I NEVER KNEW", some new songs, as well as a spanish (Brazilian) version of "I WILL SURVIVE".

    Album Description

THINKING ABOUT BOB DYLAN is a mostly acoustic album of songs featuring six singer/songwriters with each performing one Bob Dylan Song and one song of their own.

If you like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Steve Forbert and similar artists or if you collect Bob Dylan songs sung by other artists, this CD is for you.

The first and last songs on the disc are original songs that mention Bob Dylan in the lyrics. Track number 1, the title track, was originally recorded and released in 1992 by Rex Foster on his release, ARTIST. An interesting true story tells how this song was playing on radio station KFAN in the San Antonio area one day when a fellow called up and said he was Bob Dylan and wanted to know where he could buy Rex's CD. To make a long story short -- later that morning the owner of the record store that carried the disc called the radio station to say, "Guess who was just in my store?" That's right! Bob Dylan bought Rex Foster's CD with the song called THINKIN' ABOUT BOB DYLAN. The final track on the disc, BALLAD OF BOB DYLAN, (sometimes simply called BOB DYLAN) is written and performed by Norman Lamont of Edinburgh, Scotland. Norman describes the song as "a story-song in the style of the Zim. An affectionate tribute - not a parody". Norman's songs stand out as the most different from the rest of the tracks on the disc and everytime I listen to this track, I just can't help but laugh. A good alternate title for this track could be, "Norman Lamont's 115th Dream". So off the wall, there is no doubt but that this is sheer fantasy unlike Rex Foster's story of Bob Dylan actually purchasing his CD.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A privilege to be on this CD.......2004-04-29

When Steve approached me to contribute a couple of tracks, he didn't say anything about it being a country CD. So my Series of Dreams is anything but country! However I was well impressed with the musicianship and commitment of the other contributors and it's a fine album to be on. The familiar Dylan songs in unfamiliar arrangements are a good lead-in to the thoughtful and appealing original material. I hope this Amazon listing allows more Zim fans to enjoy this excellent collection.

This is Kate, from Kate & Paul. I just would like to thank Amazon for posting this item for sale. It was a great collaborative project with fabulous singer songwriters from across the nation and the globe. Our haunting and emotional cover of "I Believe in You" was arranged by our bassist, Jim Gilheany, formerly of Kings in Disguise and Sonny Rhodes. It was recorded and produced by Gene Perla, a superb jazz performer who tours the world. Mandolin is performed by Jamie Coan, formerly of "From Good Homes". This four-piece collaboration is now called "Quarter Moon". Links for Quarter Moon bio and shows can be found on the kateandpaulband.com web site. We are in process of recording more songs over this year. "I Believe in You" has received heavy airplay on WDVR, Sergeantsville,NJ and WNTI, Hackettstown, NJ. Thank you to Steve Sevek of IndieCD's for pulling this all together! Enjoy the music, folks. kate
