Antonio Salieri is, unfortunately, best known as Mozart's great Viennese rival. Some of his work has appeared on recordings, and he was clearly an interesting composer of well-crafted, entertaining music. But now that a singer with the stature and prodigious gifts of Cecilia Bartoli has undertaken an entire CD of his opera arias, he may just become a quasi-household name. Here he proves himself a composer who wrote for virtuosos; Bartoli is nothing if not a vituoso. And, indeed, this CD opens with an impressive bang: An aria from La secchia rapita features a wild vocal line complete with wild coloratura, huge leaps, a range from low G to high D flat (Bartoli flirts more and more with the soprano range while using her chest register even more forcefully!), and vast dynamic changes accompanied by a full orchestra augmented with grand, martial trumpets. Other arias--one from Palmira, Regina di Persia, for example--are more introspective and are spun out with a graceful, seamless legato and seemingly endless pianissimo. Everything one loves about Bartoli is here: the intensity, absolute fluidity in execution, breath control, glorious trill, the ability to whisper or holler, and an identification with the character she's portraying which makes the situation credible and involving for the listener. At the same time, we can't overlook a tendency to overstatement and exaggeration and a breathiness to some of the delivery which can be an annoying mannerism. But where else can one get such excitement and commitment coupled with an irresistible charm in a singer so clearly at her peak? Most/all of the arias and operas here are virtually unknown; this CD whets our appetites for more Salieri. The accompaniments are as superbly thought-out and played as one would hope for--the wacky pizzicato strings and solo wind and brass lines in an aria from La Cifra, for instance, will delight. Bartoli fans and fans of great singing should not wait another moment before ordering this. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Mostly nice selections sung well.......2007-03-07
This CD features many delightful selections of Salieri's music, expertly performed by Ms. Bartoli and by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Anyone who likes Bartoli, and most people (non-experts) who like Mozart, would enjoy this album. The slower pieces, such as "Ah sia gia" and "Lungi da te" are especially beautiful.
That said, some of the selections seem to drag on (Salieri's fault). After a while listening, one just gets the feeling that "Vi sono sposa e amante" should have ended already, and the same goes for "Sulle mie tempie."
Painful introduction to Salieri.......2006-10-27
Ms. Bartoli is one of the great mezzos of our recent era, and her voice used to delight me, especially in the repertoire of Rossini, Mozart, & Handel sung by other great mezzos like Teresa Berganza.
Unfortunately, the voice that used to move so smoothly and accurately through florid passages is entirely absent here, and I have no explanation or understanding for the fervent praise bestowed upon this CD by others.
It is, in short, a travesty.
Bartoli emits the most painful and harsh pecking sounds......listening to just ONE of the tracks all the way through is a test of willpower and endurance! Granted, as someone else pointed out, these Salieri pieces are not an ideal choice for Bartoli, which explains some of the discomfort, but there is no way to excuse the vocalization that permeates the entire disc.
Sadly, this is a recording that should never have been released, and is a mockery of what the bel canto voice used to be.
Bartoli- The Most Important Voice of Our Age.......2006-02-27
Cecilia Bartoli is not only noteworthy for her unique voice, but for her contributions to musical study. She seems to be effectively and singlehandedly changing the face of how we approach music history with her recordings. This is why this recording is important.
She has been recording rare arias from operas which have dropped out of common repetoire for centuries. She has unearthed forgotten operas of great musical innovators such as Glueck and Vivaldi, and now Salieri. And due to what she achieves here, I will happily put "Salieri Album" in a rank next to my most prized Mozart records.
It seems as though Mozart dominates today's ouvre as the sole Classical Period composer of opera, but it was composers like Vincente Martin y Soler and Antonio Salieri who dominated the scene. Salieri was also just as innovative as Mozart. Works such as the overture to "Cesare in Farmacusa" harbor proto-Beethovenian storms, while his opera "Axur," in it's ahead-of-its-time construction, look foreward to the music-dramas of Wagner. These days, we look mainly at Mozart and his Donna Anna or Queen of the Night as THE voices of the Classical Period, but when you consider the bigger picture, Salieri's heroines, especially those the Cecilia Bartoli electrifyingly portrays on this record, equate or exceed what we might hear from Mozart in technical demand and overall beauty (Take for example the first track on this record).
With Cecilia Bartoli, opera is never boring. Some might thing she overacts, but is opera not essentially a fusion of music and drama? In this respect, Signora Bartoli is the perfect voice to define our generation, a generation which is looking to expand its musical horizons by exploring operas of more obscure composers. It is a relief that she knows how to bring her roles to LIFE. This is why her mission to revive these works has been so succesful. She has people interested.
As for the composer himself, Salieri was without a doubt, the most influential on the upcoming Romantic Period, even more so than Mozart. Notable names who had their musical education nurtured under Salieri's wing include Schubert, Weber, Beethoven, Mozart's son Franz Xaver, and even Liszt. It really is unfortunate that Pushkin and Peter Shaffer have pinned against Mozart, a composer who Salieri admired and had good relations with, according to letters.
The recording quality is excellent, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment compliments Bartoli's voice perfectly. Adam Fisher, furthermore, has a difficult task since much of this recording is world-premiere material. However, he presents the material as vividly as though they have never left the repetoire.
Buy this recording. I believe Signora Bartoli has set out on something great, and "Salieri Album" will have a ripple effect in the music world. I love this release.
Genius! Sheer genius!.......2005-12-19
Cecilia Bartoli is known for recording unfamiliar music. Here she recorded arias by Mozart's great rival Salieri and how beautifully she does it. She finds the right colours for every single piece, combined with her brilliant technique you get a feast of tasteful singing that will take your breath away! Buy it!
A revelation!.......2005-04-05
I came rather late to this CD. Am I the only one who saw "Amadeus" and came out wanting to hear more of the music of Salieri?
Ms Bartoli brings a her wonderful skills to the recording of some feriously difficult arias and proves up to the task. I know that some people have commented on flaws in her singing or the recording but the the joy of the album is the journey of discovery....each track is an adventure and a revelation.
A revelation of two great musical talents in top form ..Bartoli and Salieri.
Salieri's music is technically sophisticated and he wrote some truly glorious music for the female voice.
I can only recommend this to any lover of music.

Pifarro's Best Album!.......2003-07-08
Although Pifarro has released some wonderful stuff in the past couple of years, "Los Ministriles" is still, in my opinion, their best offering to date. Simply, this recording is a delight, and although I've heard it dozens of times, it always remains fresh and enjoyable upon each re-aquaintance. There is something about music from the Spanish renaissance that sets it apart from almost anything being written in Europe at the time, and Pifarro captures the fun, spontanaity and pure beauty that this music exudes from note one. Highly recommended.
Fun, syncopated music from Piffaro, the Renaissance Band........2002-11-25
The full title of this album is "Los Ministriles: Spanish Renaissance Wind Music", and it features a wide variety of genteel and folksy tunes that would have been played by multi-instrumentalist minstrels employed by the nobles and clergy of the time. Originally founded in 1980 as the Philadelphia Renaissance Wind Band, Piffaro took its current name from the Italian version of "Pfeifer", or piper. And indeed, this group boasts a wide variety of wind instruments: entire families of shawms, recorders and crumhorns; along with sackbuts, a bass dulcian and various bagpipes; accompanied by Spanish essentials such as harp, vihuela, guitar and percussion. The lively and intricate syncopation of Renaissance Spanish compositions lends a distinctive character to this CD in comparison with the group's other releases, which are also very good. Try their Flemish and German recordings too--"A Flemish Feast: Flemish Renaissance Wind Music" and "Stadtpfeiffer: Music of Renaissance Germany".
Renaissance Music is Anything but Boring!.......2000-03-20
I will admit an immediate bias for this recording, as my Renaissance Music instructor's husband is one of the players. However, leaving that fact out entirely, this disc, like all of Piffaro's recordings, is a joy. I listen to them everywhere, especially when I need to stay awake on long drives. To hear such difficult ensemble instruments as shawms, krumhorns and recorders in a resonant environment, played perfectly in tune is rare. This particular disc ranges from organ-like works for recorder consort to rousing dances like ¡Si abrá in este baldres! Unlike CDs that contain lengthy masses with no lighter interludes (although these are equally gorgeous, especially the Gabrielli Consort's Moralès Mass for the Feast of St. Isidore), Piffaro's CDs are widely varied in terms of instrumentation, style, tempo and inflection. I have played this for many people who claim to not like early music and have had much favorable response, not to mention the personal enjoyment and sheer fun!
Fun music.......1998-11-21
Much of this CD is typical Renaissance music with period instruments: a delight to listen to, but sounding a lot like other Renaissance delights. What I found really unique is that this is the first selection of Renaissance music which I'm familiar with that includes bagpipes among the instuments. Crumhorns and sackbuts are nice but familiar; the bagpipe selections blew me away.

Excellent product and service!.......2005-09-11
Love the product and received it record time overseas. Thank you!
A must if you love Mozart Opera.......2002-04-06
The LA Reviewer said it all and I totally agree. The sound is wonderful and singing top notch. A great discovery and a must for any opera collector. Mozart gets better the more you listen to his opera compositions - the set contains many of the outstanding arias not always done in concert but which are lovely and some rediscoveries. Also, our recent loss of Winbergh makes this a buy as we don't have alot of recordings of his beautiful tenor voice. This set features him on 4 arias and his Mozart singing is truly outstanding. This set of 5 CD's a great value and highly recommended.
Great CD but beware!.......2002-02-24
This has to be the ultimate compendium of these undeservedly neglected arias. Many of the arias themselves rival the most glorious moments in the operas, and some of them, particularly the high soprano arias, are highly-charged vocal stuntfests that have to be heard to be believed.
This set has much to recommend it but does have one major technical flaw. Every copy that I have heard (and that is several) has a skip near the end of Track 10 of Disc 1. It seems to be part of the master and many listeners will be able to live with it, but I do wish that producers would take the time to fix a defect like this for such a significant musical document. Purists beware!
A MUST-BUY treasure trove!.......1999-09-04
Can't get enough of sublime Mozartian aria music? This complete compilation of concert arias should be part of every Mozart lover's collection, especially as a supplement to better known opera arias. There are gems among the concert collection that challenge even the loveliest of Mozart's better known operatic work. I can't say this is the only version of the concert arias ever to buy... the more versions I hear, the more I love the different interpretations. But if you're only going to sample one set, this could be the winner. The singers represented are masters of the Mozart craft; one virtuoso piece after another - for five discs, each over an hour long! The arrangement of voices, mostly soprano (since they sing the originally castrati arias as well), is also wonderful; no one sound is heard for too long before a very different one takes its place to give a contrasting flavor. And they're all in top form: Kiri Te Kanawa with her trademark creamy mildness is followed by Edita Gruberova's agile, silver-haunted coloratura. Teresa Berganza, whom I usually link with mezzo roles, is a tour de force of golden warmth; her Ch'io mi scordi de te? on disc 3 (piano accompaniment originally played by Mozart himself) is magnificent and deserves special note. Krisztina Laki and Elfriede Hobarth were lesser known to me; both are quite fine, although Laki's crystal sweetness is stronger and more pitch-perfect than Hobarth's, particularly in the highest notes of some mind-boggling musical phrases. The final 1.5 discs are handed to the men; Gosta Winbergh sings the tenor arias with heroic beauty and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Fernando Corena as the bass-baritones are simply the richly toned legends one would expect. A very nice booklet with notes, lyrics and translations to each aria is included. It's a marvelous set; one of my favorite discoveries.

Sanroma: Greatest Almost-Unknown Pianist of the Century.......2005-02-26
Jesus Maria ("Choo Choo")Sanroma used to stay at our home in Coconut Grove (Miami), Florida..when on tour. My father was a Baldwin Piano dealer and Choo Choo was a Baldwin artist...and they were fast friends. He was master of the great Baldwin SD-10 concert grand piano. Both Jose Iturbi and Artur Rubenstein told my father that Sanroma was probably the best of all of them.
Unfortunately, his Gershwin tours, which were astounding, allowed illiterate classical snobs to discount his talents. However, within this album you will experience the fire and passion of this amazing artist. A great & kind man. And from, proudly, Purto Rican parentage.

If the concept of an operatic tenor plying the pop charts with a broad range of songs d'amour is hardly a new one (see also Mario Lanza and Luciano Pavarotti), it's one that has enduring appeal, especially when entrusted to the talents of an established master like Placido Domingo. Culled from his albums De mi alma Latina ("From My Latin Soul") (volumes 1 and 2) and Be My Love, this collection ably finds the common ground between Hollywood and La Scala, and wends its way through a Latin-inflected romantic songbook that stretches from Rome to Rio. Whether mining the sentiments of filmdom's Francis Lai ("Love Story") and Maurice Jarre ("Somewhere My Love") or pop standards like Bert Kaempfert's "Spanish Eyes" and "Somewhere over the Rainbow," Domingo infuses them all with a grace and drama that belie the sometimes overly precious arrangements that back his efforts. The singer has aimed for timelessness here, and largely hit the mark. --Jerry McCulley

Placido Domingo is a legend and this CD only prooves that he is not only a legend in the field of Opera but as well as popular music (Crosover). Excellent interpretation. I love it.
Domingo's "continuing tradition" is one worth ending!.......2001-06-28
Classical artists' attempts to cross over to the many varied popular music genres, and vice versa, are rarely pleasant experiences especially for informed and knowing devotees on either side. Domingo's is by far is not only one of the worst but one of the saddest. Domingo's own liner notes attests to the "huge influence" and "lasting inspiration" that the sources of these popular songs had on him. Domingo must have devoted a remarkably great degree of effort overcoming these to become one of this generation's great classical vocalists. But despite this Herculean effort, they tragically resurfaced as evidenced by the universally poor quality of virtually every element of this album. The recordings of Florence Foster Jenkins illustrate well what happens when someone doesn't know any better. Domingo does know better and still couldn't help himself proving bad habits never die. That is what makes Jenkins' effort so funny and, regrettably, what makes Domingo's so sad. The great Domingo "tradition" is more than well documneted in so many previous wonderful recordings and this CD clearly demonstrates he has little left to do in the studio except discredit himself. But he's is only following the same path so many before have traveled in their declining years. And as usual, those in the know are amazed but never surprised.
Domingo's "continuing tradition" is one worth ending!.......2001-06-27
Domingo does know better and still couldn't help himself proving, once again, bad habits never die. That is what makes Jenkins' effort so funny and, regrettably, what makes Domingo's so pittifully sad. The lasting Domingo tradition was documented on recordings many years ago and "Songs of Love" represents all that's left for him to do in the studio. Like so many before him, he's simply following an all too familiar path in his declining artistic years. Those in the know are always amazed but never surprised.
