Derf Reklaw, formerly of the '70s jazz-funk band the Pharaohs, reappears on this "comeback" disc with a thoroughly refreshing and wide-ranging effort. Utilizing a thundering herd of musicians (including the likes of drummers Billy Higgins and Don Littleton, pianist Nick Smith, and bassist Reggie Carson as well as a score of other musicians), Reklaw is free to romp on everything from flute to alto sax to djembe, cowbell, congas, and instruments with names like whisums, quinto, and tumba. What results is a stirring exploration into the musics of the African diaspora, wrung through Reklaw's swinging and creative vision of the place where jazz, reggae, and soul collide. Expect plenty of percussion, compositions leading down interesting and invigorating trails, Reklaw's agile flute moves, and a feeling that, at least on this jazz record, anything could (and probably will) happen. --S. 5 out of 5 stars True Sounds of Beautiful Egypt!.......2000-01-10

This CD represents authentic sounds of the real Egypt! From the sounds of the streets of Luxor to the haunting melody of the rebaba, this is an excellent choice in the real sounds of Upper Egypt. A must for your collection if you want to hear authentic Egyptian music!

5 out of 5 stars Great Sounds of Traditional Egypt!.......1999-04-26

If you have ever visited Upper Egypt and experienced the wonderful music created by the local musicians, then this is the CD for you. I have been searching for traditional music of the Upper Egypt area and finally found it. From the opening sounds of the horse and buggy and street sounds in Luxor to the haunting and melodic sounds of the rababah to the beat of the tablah, it is a wonderful collection of songs. I have visited Upper Egypt twice and had the great opportunity to hear these musicians in person. This CD brought back great memories of that experience in sound!! A must for your collection and I highly recommend it. I hope to find more like it!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Must Have .......2005-12-29

Cabin in the Sky is an excellent, excellent black film. Very entertaining and a movie that projects the power of a conscience. I first saw Cabin in Sky on the AMC channel with my dad when I was 15 years old. I am now 32 years old and every time I watch the movie it is as if I am watching it for the first time. This is a great movie and I can't wait for the DVD version.

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly remastered classic.......2001-09-18

I have to give this CD 5 stars since it provides americans the only chance to listen to the fine voice of Kenneth Spencer. It's worth buing the CD just for the one track he's singing.

5 out of 5 stars Louis, Lena, Ethel, and Eddie in a classic.......2000-12-13

CABIN IN THE SKY is one of my favorite films, and the soundtrack does full justice to the score and the performers. 5 extended versions and 4 outtakes are welcome additions to this entertaining CD. The combination of jazz and inspirational tunes surpisingly come together very harmoniously in this mixture of fantasy and reality. The sound quality is fine, though a stereo remix was not possible. From the opening "Lil' Black Sheep" to "Taking a Chance on Love" the score is full of gems and anyone who loves musicals will be inspired by this soundtrack.

    4 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE SOUNDTRACK.......1999-07-31

Duke Ellington, Ethel Waters & Lena Horne, what else could a musical ask for. Three giants of jazz & blues, who show us a small portion of their great indvidual talents on this soundtrack.

Duke Ellington's , Going Up, Lena's version of Ain't it the Truth, and the wonderful swinging vocals of Ethel Waters. One of the african-american divas that was there when blues and jazz started, and one of the earliest to be recorded. Makes you wonder why more musicals were not made with these great artists.Reccommend also all of Miss Waters recordings reissued on the Classics Label from 1921-1940. This cd is a must for anyone interested in jazz or blues.

5 out of 5 stars Leontyne Price Reads The Story Of Aida.......2005-10-08

This is the companion CD to the illustrated book "Aida" as told by Leontyne Price, which is also available on Amazon.com. It features highlights from the RCA Red Seal recording with Placido Domingo, Grace Bumbry, Sherill Milnes and Ruggero Raimondi, a CD that is available on Amazon.com. It is indeed a great way to hook young children into opera by first turning them on to the story. There is a fairy-tale like quality to Leontyne Price'ss reading of the plot- an element catering to children and to young-at-heart adults. Of course, opera connoisseurs will also find it charming. As an adult, I can thoroughly enjoy this book because Aida is one of my favorite operas and I know the music by heart. However, despite the charm of this book, I feel that this is still very much the fabrication of an author since parts of the story do not fit into the actual opera. I never thought Amneris was THAT jealous, and the opening paragraphs describe Aida in her days as Princess of Ethiopia when she was heir to her father Amonastro's kingdom. She is described as very beautiful in purely poetic ways without alluding to her dark black Ethiopian skin (and Ethiopians were much darker than the tan, bronze-skinned Egyptians) and she becomes as something of a figure of romantic legend than anything remotely real. She disobeys her father's decree of not wandering too far from the realm and lo and behold, she gets captured and turned into a slave to the haughty Princess Amneris. Radames falls for Aida simply because beneath her slave status, he must unconsciously recognize her royal blood. This much is probably true. But I also feel that Amneris must have also recognized Aida's royal heritage. The book is beautifully illustrated to resemble Egypian hieroglyphics.

Leontyne Price first sang Aida in 1957 in San Francisco. This performance was such a hit that she later filmed the final Act for the Bell Telephone Series and it was these performances that made her a legend. Her Aida was mounted on the Metropolitan Opera and she sang with unbridled success opposite such singers as Grace Bumbry, Placido Domingo, Sherill Milnes, Jon Vickers, Rita Gorr and others. Her Farewell Concert in the 80's was the aria "O Patria Mia" which earned her a record-breaking standing ovation. It was a teary, emotional farewell to Leontyne Price's career in her signature role. Aida is without a doubt her greatest triumph. She clearly loved the role and it shows in the way she reads the story. She identifies with Aida's character in a personal way. Leontyne should actually be recognized as much a figure in the Civil Rights Movement as Rosa Parks or even Coretta Scott King. It was appropriate that Leontynne became the first black opera superstar during the Civil Rights Movement. She was born and bred in Mississippi during the darkest period of racial tension in the South (when she first began singing in Mississippi, the case of Brown Vs Board of Education was transpiring). She often claimed that by singing opera, long associated with whites or European singers, she was able to break the color barrier and push blacks into further social progress. She was given the mantle of this responsibility by contralto Marian Anderson, the first black singer at the Met in 1955. Leontyne Price also donned Afros in some of her LP covers and in her performances. She was no spokesperson for the Black Panthers but she did admire Civil Rights leaders from any source. Her source was opera. Listening to her reading this story is a sheer delight since no other soprano can be so intimately familiar with the role of Aida. The story is heartmoving and passionate. It is about love that overcomes racial differences, class differences and a love that makes even the gods weep. At the end, even the jealous Amneris finally recognizes the love of Radames and Aida and implores to the gods that they may die in peace. "Pace, Pace T'Imploro". A beautiful opera. Buy the RCA Red Seal recording of Leontyne Price's Aida as well since that one is Leontyne Prices' favorite version and her best performance of that particular role.

5 out of 5 stars Absouletly Beautiful - Thank Leontyne.......2002-10-05

Leontyne Price does a wonderful job of explaining this beautiful opera. If you want to expose your child to various art forms of music this disc and book set will diffently do it. Thank you Ms. Price

5 out of 5 stars Aida told by Leontyne Price.......2000-07-07

An excellent version to get my 8 and 10 year olds interested in opera. These have delighted us and many of our friends hearing it at our house. We all loved "knowing" what was happening, having the story told with the opera intermixed. Excellent! Bravo! Encore!

A definite must for house music lovers! Roy Davis Jr. brings a fresh collection of soulful house music. Music with a positive message! His love for the music shows in his productions, "Sweet As You" is amazing along with "Join His Kingdom" & the Jazzanova remix of "Watch Them Come." Another Roy Davis Jr. favorite.

    5 out of 5 stars ROY!.......2001-12-15

I disagree with many of the reviews of this album. My inital repsonse was similar to most people's, but then i realized something. People get too caught up in classifying music. Dont go into this looking for or expecting something. Sit back and let him show YOU something. If you know what you want to hear then its probably unorginal and has been done a million times before. Go find that specific sound somewhere else because Roy is here to do it his way. Dont try to label or categorize his music, just listen to it, it is great amazing relaxing music. If you want it to be an upbeat late night pounding house mix, youre buying the wrong CD. For true house fans this is a wonderful change of pace and very respectable, and one of a kind, Roy style. I expected this to be a mix, so when i discovered it wasnt, i was a bit discouraged. But when i got off that and just listened to it, i realized how good this CD truly is...KEEP IT UP ROY!

3 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.........2001-10-16

"Traxx From The Nile" is the fifth studio album for acclaimed Chicago garage/ deep house producer Roy Davis Jr. This disc is chock full of deep garage house beats, stumbling breakbeats, funky basslines, organic instrumentation and vocals mostly provided by Roy Davis Jr. himself, (who sings in an amusing Curtis Mayfield-esque falsetto). The problem here is that this album plummets into the trap that so many house producers have fallen into when they release full length albums: repetition. "Traxx from the Nile" is meant for a dancefloor, and not a living room. This album is a real toss-up as far as deep house music is concerned. There are very few "bad" tracks, but also, very few of the tracks truly shine on the grand scheme of things (the only one that really stands out is a Jazzanova remix of "Watch Them Come"). On the other hand, Roy Davis Jr. is a solid producer, who deserves the credit and the recognition that he's gotten over the years. "Traxx From The Nile" is certainly worth checking out if you're a diehard house head, but those who haven't immersed themselves in deep house music shouldn't bother picking this one up. Consistent at it's best, forgettable at it's worst.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Tepid performance.......2004-04-12

This recording has wonderful, clear sound quality, but the performances, and especially the conducting, are not up to par. Jessye Norman sings everything beautifully with rich tone, and sounds magnificent in her two arias, but she is a lifeless Aïda. She pastes on Aïda's emotions. Her portrayal is too shallow. She sang this performance when she was still a lirico-spinto, and not yet a full-blown dramatic soprano. Her soft high notes are pretty, but hardly breathtaking and she cuts some forte high notes short, like the high B-flat on the word "Ah!" in "Ritorna vincitor". Pedro Lavirgen is a squillo-less Radamès. At least he puts a little more emotion into his singing than Norman does. His "Celeste Aïda" is surprisingly effective and well sung. His high notes are secure, but he shamelessly milks "Sacerdote, io resto a te" by holding on to one of the high G's for an inordinately long amount of time. Fiorenza Cossotto is in great voice, but very surprising for her, she is very subdued in this performance. She is not dull by any other mezzo's standards, but she is dull by her own standards. Her Judgement Scene with the priests is not included in this highlights CD. Her high notes are rock-solid, which at least partially makes up for her less-than-total dramatic commitment. The baritone who sings Aïda's father is serviceable, but by no means memorable. The conducting of Nino Sanzogno is lifeless. He uses the same, moderate tempo for every scene. When the tempo should speed up and be dramatic, like at the end of the Amneris/Radamès duet, he lets the tempo drag. Some of the brass playing is less than spectacular, the mentioned duet being an example. The trumpet playing in the Triumphal March is mediocre; many of the notes sound like they are about to crack. The sound, as mentioned earlier, is superb. There is no audience noise except for applause, and no tape hiss. The orchestra and soloists could have been miked a bit closer, but they are very audible throughout.

This recording could have been great, but an atmosphere of lethargy pervades it, with Sanzogno's conducting being particularly dead.

    4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Perfromance.......2000-01-06

As a Jessye fan, I was very excited to come across this recording. It's a live performance. with excellent recording quality, and the performance is fantastic. Cosotto as Amneris is simply electric, and the rest of the cast is superb. One or two flat notes do not mar my respect for jessye's interpretation, but could explain why this was not recorded by a major label.
