With Oh! Gravity, the San Diego-based modern rock act delivers their best album in years, one that fully reconciles their (Christian) faith with their (considerable) talent. It's diverse but not overly so, and while the production work of veteran Tim Palmer (U2, Tears for Fears) helps provide a radio-friendly sheen atop everything, it's actually their least compromised/mainstream sounding record since the group left the indie scene. From the chiming, revved-up, anthemic title song, which pairs compressed vocals with distorted guitars, to the moody and mildly schizophrenic single "Dirty Second Hands," this album is loud and dirty, the lyrics are thoughtful and plaintive. Lead singer/songwriter Jon Foreman clearly questions the meaning of the band's success, and the role they play in the scheme of things: "Like a puppet on a monetary string/Maybe we've been caught singing/Red, white, blue, and green/But that ain't my American dream." If only Switchfoot's conscience could be implanted in the bodies of other modern rock acts! The world might not necessarily be a better place, but the radio certainly would be. --Mike McGonigalSwitchfoot Pics

Switchfoot--Live in San Diego (DVD) |
Description
Oh! Gravity, the highly anticipated sixth album from the San Diego rock band Switchfoot, contains 12 new tracks written by the band and produced by Tim Palmer (Tin Machine, Pearl Jam, The Cure, Mother Love Bone, U2) and Switchfoot with Grammy-winning executive producer Steve Lillywhite. The new album expands Switchfoot's sonic palette while at the same time dealing with certain social issues. On songs like "Dirty Second Hands," Jon Foreman sings of the dehumanization that comes with technology. Other politically motivated tracks include "Oh! Gravity." the title track's generational appeal for love, peace and understanding, "American Dream," with its biting truth, "Awakening," about trying to recover the innocence of a child in the midst of an ever-harsher reality, the sawing alt-country of "Head Over Heels," the exotic instrumentation and Middle Easternflavor of "Circles," the REM-esque pulse of "4:12," the lush Brit-pop melodies of "Yesterdays," the Echo and the Bunnymen/Smiths influenced "Burn Out Bright" and Motown sound of "Amateur Lovers."Customer Reviews:
Praise be to God.......2007-07-05
There are a few connotations to Christianity but not cleary stated in every song.
He sings about the largest current issue in the US, the war.
Also there is a song about a dream he has and turns gold. It was a story that I really enjoyed.
I wish i could see them perform.
It has a fun lyrical tone. And serious.
This was not a waste of money now.
grew into one of the best.......2007-06-15
And so I initially was quite disappointed with this album. But after some months I think it is one of their best. It is harder music, but still very tight and thoughtful. I encourage people to listen to it not as a 'Switchfoot' album, but as an album. In that light, it is excellent and speaks very well of Switchfoot's ability to write excellent music that is not easy to pidgeonhole.
Switchfoot's best CD yet!.......2007-06-15
Great CD and..........2007-06-05
Anyway, the music on the CD is great. Switchfoot is always a great band to listen to. My favorite songs are the title track and "Awakening".
Oh! Another Great One.......2007-05-19
I am absolutely in love with this CD. I would have to say "Faust" is one of the greater tracks on the CD (along with "Dirty Second Hands", "Oh! Gravity", and "Awakening"), but every track is an amazing listen.
And they were hoping that the larger public would take this CD in good hearts. They need not worry about the public. We love them. Oh! Gravity is a great mix of melodies, harmonies, and banging of cymbals (haha, joke about live concerts =P).
Jon provides a good look on material things and our lives as is. He always has something good to tell the world, and the world is out there just waiting for something to be said. I love his lyrics.
I am glad I purchased this one the day it came out. And I'm glad Switchfoot keeps rocking on...

Love hearing new material from the "Rent" cast member--as well as dance mixes!.......2007-06-15
1. Tracy Young's Flying Monkey Club mix (8:05) (very circuity tribal mix)
2. Eddie Baez mix (8:42) (Eddie does his great dark hardhouse magic)
3. Hani's Flying So High Club mix (7:04) (funky disco house mix--but it's more like a dub with few of Idina's vocals)
4. Josh Harris mix (7:15) (more of an electro/filter house feel)
5. Funky Junction & Antony Reale mix (6:20) (real smooth, commercial house mix, best suits the vocals)
6. Single Version (3:47) (While I'm ALL about dance mixes, I must say, the pure arrangement of the original guitar ballad version shows off her stunning vocals--this is just an amazing, uplifting power ballad, and hearing the original version, I realize that NONE of the remixes do the song justice)

A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Obviously, no single-disc compilation could ever please everyone (did we really need two ALW songs?), but as a sampler intended for people who watched the series and want to hear more of the Great White Way, The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" can't be topped. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:
Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.
Great CD.......2005-11-01
Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27
I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.
Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.
Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08
the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have
done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some
of which still show some of their age, but come across quite
well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this
disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to
get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any
more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to
try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's
early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.
If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!
The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07
I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.
I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

International pressing. 'Super Extra Gravity' was produced by Tore Johansson who worked with Franz Ferdinand & previously with The Cardigans on 'Gran Turismo'. Aside from the single 'I Need Some Fine Wine...', other highlights include the sparse album opener 'Losing A Friend', 'In The Round', 'Good Morning Joan' featuring a wall of guitars and the sad and beautiful 'Don't Blame Your Daughter (Diamonds)'. Every listen of the new record reveals another gem - The Cardigans have succeeded in their aim: to make a beautifully deranged album that never ceases to surprise the listener. 11 tracks in all. Universal. 2005.Customer Reviews:
Maybe a sappy review, but I'm willing to risk it..........2006-12-16
They are, in fact, so good that it's impossible to put into words how moving their music is, particularly with the release of Long Gone Before Daylight and Super Extra Gravity (each of which still give me shivers).
Everything about SEG is amazing- the music, the vocals, the lyrics, the power, the emotion, the rock and roll (!).
It kills me that The Cardigans have had to suffer the pop culture maiming they've received in America. People just don't know how much is out there by them, and that Lovefool is not the keystone of the kind of music they make. If you were ever interested in The Cardigans, I urge you to look into the band more deeply and check out what they have to offer.
Even though I love all the songs on SEG, I have to say that it took a bit more effort to fall into And Then You Kissed Me II and Losing A Friend, but now that I know the album, I have to say that it all dovetails wonderfully into three little song pockets.
The first four songs are banded together into something akin to a roller coaster ride. Losing A Friend starts slow, but climbs into a peak before Godspell "whiplashes you around and 'round" in the words of Nina.
Drip Drop Teardrop picks up at a lower velocity than Godspell, but leaves you feeling content and rounded-out with Overload.
The next little group gives you the perfect kind of musical high (and is my favorite segment), with Fine Wine (abridged title) being the perfect pick-up from Overload. It rocks, and to be quite honest, I think that after hearing that song, anyone would want to take commands from Nina Persson...
Enter the gorgeous downshift to Don't Blame Your Daughter (Diamonds), where Nina's voice takes on the sort of softness that one can only dream about hearing.
Ending on the gliding feeling of a warm crescendo, you're then swept into the rock-y ethereal heights with Little Black Cloud (her vibrato alone is worth the price of the album, as silly as that sounds).
The last little group of four gives you a nice comedown from LBC into In the Round, which some fans have actually denounced as not worth being on the album.
I think the song is worth its steady heartbeat because it is the perfect launch for Holy Love, which blasts off like a rocket and doesn't quit until you hit the end of Good Morning Joan- which is one of those songs that sounds completely effortless, but certainly does its share of the heavy lifting.
Then the quietly rolling And Then You Kissed Me II. The lyrics in this song are cruelly beautiful, and its small, compact, but potent phrases are bound to stick in your head.
You will not be disappointed to own this album, and if you are, then you aren't listening correctly.
Rather impressed.......2006-10-25
Needeless to say, I am willing to give the Cardigans a chance every single time they release an album. Their albums represent an evolution away from what made them popular. "Gran Turismo" was a radical departure, and I dug that. "Long Gone Before Daylight" was really pretty bad, in my opinion. I felt catatonic listening to it. I was pretty disappointed. But, you know, one cannot stay away from something like the Cardigans, and when I heard they released a new record, I was all over it.
"Super Extra Gravity" (should have been the title of the last album) is a great rock and roll album. This record would have fit in with the sound of the mid-90's when they were making lounge music. It is reminicent of the best of the Breeders or Veruca Salt, though, of course, the musicians in the Cardigans are much more talented than those mid-90's bands.
The album is a rollercoaster ride, with a good ballance of more upbeat tunes, and slower, darker tunes. The guitar work is great, and the production is polished. But there are some suprises in the structures of the songs themselves. What one expects from a song like "Holy Love" is altered by the last chorus, as the Cardigans experiment with range and dissonance. It's not too far out (in a way that the Sonic Youth were far out) but it just enough to add a new dimension of interest to the song.
The draw for most to the Cardigans is the voice of the singer, Nina Persson. Long gone are the delicate tones of sticky sweetness that she is originally famous for. On this record she gains some gravel, and many times sings not beyond her range, but at the very edges of it. It underscores the rock element of the record to the nth degree.
All in all great production values, innovative stylings, and a relatively coherent set list makes this album a really great listen, very enjoyable for playing while you are engaged in some activity. Enjoy it with a friend. "Super Extra Gravity" is a very impressive record from one of my favorite bands.
An Amazing Album From A Superlative Band.......2006-08-13
Either way, the lead singer, Nina Persson, has a truly unique, emotive voice and all of their albums have that listenable quality where one songs manages to sound different from the next.
I had high expectations for Super Extra Gravity, and they were met. People are right to say that every Cardigans album sounds different, but with Nina's voice as a constant, this variability is a strength. Super Extra Gravity is rougher and rockier than LGBD, but I like it just as much. I especially like "Don't Blame Your Daughter" and "I Need Some Fine Wine...And You Need To Be Nicer", and "And Then You Kissed Me II". The entire album, however, is fantastic, clever, and holds some nice surprises for Cardigans fans, especially.
For new listeners, I recommend starting at Gran Turismo- it's very accessible, and I dare say that if you don't like that album, you aren't going to like the Cardigans. Go back to their earlier albums only once you're addicted to Nina Persson's voice (shouldn't take long). It's also worthy to note that Nina Persson released a great solo album under the title "A Camp"- not to be missed.
They never cease to impress me........2006-08-03
Nina Perrson has one of the most beautiful voices in music. With her, it's not the range, but the tone. It is unique and pure.
This album does not contain a single consistency like the others do. Many of the songs are edgy and fierce, some are bouncy, and others are slow and dreamlike. Most are moving and enjoyable. The only songs I did not take to were Good Morning Joan and In the Round. Favorites are Godspell and I Need Some Fine Wine...
If you are new to the Cardigans, I think this is a great album to start with. It is very accessible and not as solemn or quirky as their others (which are also great). I completely recommend this album, I doubt you will feel like you wasted your money but just to be safe, I always say to listen to a sample first.
I hope this album gets its due credit; the Cardigans are way underrated.
SEG is good but it's not LGBD.......2006-07-03
There is a powerful-sounding song called Godspell, which is a song about religion being an opiate for the masses, but after listening to the lyrics, I came to the conclusion that they are rather nonsensical and the message sounds more whiny than astute.
The album is decidedly brash and brave and each song has a unique sound, but I miss the vulnerability of Long Gone Before Daylight. I thought it deserved 4 stars, because I am not usually a person who likes harsher sounding rock 'n roll, and this album was more enjoyable for me than most would be in that genre. Not all of the songs are rock per se, but the album does have an edgy rock feeling throughout.

Few folk albums indulge in mood swings more severe than the ones on Defying Gravity. "A woman my age, sittin' here cryin'" are the first words Cheryl Wheeler sings on her first album of new material in six years. During the next four older-but-sadder songs, bittersweet is as chipper as it gets. Even the comparatively sunny "Summer's Almost Over" finds the veteran troubadour confiding "I'm crying but I don't know why." But then comes the Caribbean lilt of the title track--written by Jesse Winchester--and the mood lightens, as the instrumental "Clearwater, Florida," and the jazzy syncopation of "Here Come Floyd" continue to chase the clouds away. By the time the album shifts into a couple of live tracks of Wheeler regaling the audience with the cell-phone absurdities of "It's the Phone" and the travails of air travel in "On the Plane," she has her crowd on the verge of tears of laughter. As the reflective "Alice" and redemptive "Blessed" attest, Wheeler is a folksinger for all emotional seasons. --Don McLeeseAlbum Description
With six years having past since Wheeler's last full-length studio collection (1999's Sylvia Hotel), the much-anticipated Defying Gravity overflows with a wealth of exquisitely crafted, powerfully resonant original songs. While her compositions have been recorded by artists as diverse as Suzy Bogguss, Garth Brooks, Bette Midler, and Linda Thompson, Wheeler's burnished alto, nimble guitar playing, and sly sense of humor insure that she will always be her own best interpreter. Standout tracks on Defying Gravity, like the bittersweet "Summer's Almost Over," the aching opener "Since You've Been Gone," and the careful character study "Alice," are defined equally by Wheeler's gifts as a writer and performer. "On the Plane" and "It's the Phone," both recorded live in concert at the now-defunct Bottom Line in New York City, are priceless examples of Wheeler the satirist. Taken as a whole, Defying Gravity paints a portrait of a performer and composer continuing to discover rewarding new avenues in her finely-developed craft.Customer Reviews:

Tears And Laughter.......2005-10-03
No losers here, but there is an awkward juxtaposition, as in most of Cheryl's albums, of gorgeous songs with very funny ones. She has a bit of a split personality, and her humor is by turns hilarious and scathing. This "other" Cheryl is best seen and heard live, and, indeed, the satyrical songs on her albums are often from concert performances, as are "It's The Phone" and "On The Plane," included on DEFYING GRAVITY. Thank you, Cheryl, for so perfectly articulating the outrage so many of us feel at the many rude, loud cell phone users that we all encounter on the train, on the bus, in crowds.
There is no such thing as a bad Cheryl Wheeler album, but if you've never explored the worlds of Cheryl Wheeler, this is as good a place as any to start. Simply brilliant.
I'm a fan, but a disappointed one.......2005-03-17

Carroll was a New York poet living in California when punk exploded in the late 1970s. He rightly sensed that punk was as much a lyrical stance as a musical one. Inspired by contemporaries like Patti Smith and Richard Hell, Carroll found himself a band and started spewing his literate and often fatalistic verse over a solid 4/4 beat. His surprise 1980 hit "People Who Died" sounded both shocking and exciting as it roared out of bored radios all across America. The rest of this guitar-heavy set--including the classic "Wicked Gravity" and the previously unreleased "Differing Touch"--paints similarly edgy portraits of lurkers and fringe dwellers. The rote rock backing occasionally gets a little tepid, but Carroll's bitter-junkie tongue burns throughout. --Michael RubyCustomer Reviews:
Great poetry, good music.......2006-01-03
As a fan, i bought his band's cds as well...what can i say? It sound so 80s in a way, you can feel N.Y.C's 5 boroughs in it, and tight punky jeans with dirty white converse shoes...
The music is ok (honest 80s garage-rock) but lyrics are the best...lyrics are top!
Read some of his books before buying this album!
Jim the Amazing.......2005-08-09
Tuff Turf and in that movie there is a scene in a warhouse where this band was playing live and I heard Voices for the first time
Jim Carroll was the voice I heard and the Jim Carroll band was the band I fell in love with. If you buy this CD at no time will it disappoint you.

music and poetry a "CULT" thing. WHY? I don't know. I can't
figure why these songs aren't perennial "80's punk."
Although Carroll's music has been successful, maybe the number of those who appreciate it as POETRY is limited, and maybe that's it's labeled "CULT." You can't turn poetry on in the background like a CD--you have to involve yourself in it. And THAT'S the best way to experience this CD.
I like this better than anything else Jim's done. The music didn't thrill at first, but when I opened the cover and read the lyrics along with the music, I was hooked, AMAZED at how I hadn't really been listening.
Carroll once mentioned that he can sometimes enjoy poetry on paper, but not when it's performed, and that some poets do it for him in performance, but not in a book. JIM, if you ever read this: I THOUGHT you did it for me on paper, but I didn't know what enjoying your poetry was until I heard THESE poems lyricized and told in your voice.

One of the most prominent mainstream rock bands in Canada, Our Lady Peace can't seem to get a break in the States. Their consistently engaging (if not always inventive) music deserves better. While slick, self-important songs like "Do You Like It" and "Made of Steel" may not help the group's case, they are more than compensated for by the expert playing and towering choruses of slow-burners like "Somewhere out There" and "Sell My Soul." Singer Raine Maida definitely has one of the more distinctive voices in rock & roll--part Scott Weiland, part Michael Stipe--and when it takes flight on the former track, Our Lady Peace truly sound like a force to be reckoned with. Here's hoping people are listening. --Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:

PERFECT IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD...........2006-01-06
WARNING.......2005-09-08
Always will be close to me.......2005-08-31
This album is very good, I think. It's rockier than older OLP stuff(although I like that just as much), and I also think more heartfelt.
This album will hold a very special place in my mind always, because of who introduced it to me, and when. It's one of those albums that belong in the 'Hall Of Fame' in my mind, just because of its association to that timeframe of my life.
Anyway, Innocent is a highly underrated song. I think it's the best one on the album--probably their best song ever, actually. It's got a good rock sound, with soulful singing, and beautiful lyrics. That's a good formula for me, generally, and it definitely works here. I highly recommend this album to anyone that misses the 90's rock scene(a la Toad The Wet Sprocket or Soul Asylum).
Sometimes Change is Good.......2005-08-25
1. All For You- I've heard that this is more like their old stuff. Driving rock beat, rawer vocals, and a great track.
2. Do You Like It?- The verses are toned down quite a bit from the first song, but it has a good melody, and is a good song.
3. Somewhere Out There- Almost ballad-like for this band, but I love the song anyway, and the violins are a nice touch.
4. Innocent- Great song, got a lot of airplay, and probably one of the best on the album. Super catchy, and the choir sounds great.
5. Made of Steel- More great melodies in the chorus, and, again, very singable and catchy.
6. Not Enough- Probably my favorite song on the CD. The verses are quite mellow, but the chorus rocks, great melody, powerful, and the guitar solo is awesome!!!
7. Sell My Soul- Another toned down song, but Raine's voice sounds great, and it's an interesting arrangement.
8. Sorry- Another very catchy, singable song. Good lyrics, and is certainly more rock than some of the others.
9. Bring Back The Sun- Another of my favorites. It may be mellow, but the emotion is great, as is the ending. The vocals sound different towards the end, but I think it's a neat sound.
10. Story About a Girl- The verses may not be excellent in sound, but the chorus turns all that around. Has one of those "epic" sounds with the instruments, meaning the transition from verse/chorus is noticeable and sudden, and the sound changes. The drums bring the chorus in nicely.
